So on the same day I went to the upscale Dior Café in the Design District and shortly after we pigged out at Club Tipico Dominicano. Very odd, I would never think to eat at Club Tipico but hey it happened and it made my day much better after the huge let down at the Dior place. My friend spontaneously invited me to Club Tipico for lunch, I didn't even know they served food here. Well to my surprise, they do and it is real good. I've always thought of this place as a bit on the ratchet side and I've never stepped foot inside but it happened.
It was mostly empty with a few families eating lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Lots of tables available surrounding an empty dance floor. I haven't been there at night but I bet it gets full and I'm sure the turn up is real. There is a bar, DJ area, Vip area, regular tables that can be reserved and an outside sitting area as well as another smaller bar in case you want to smoke outside and get fresh air, that is possible.
Food was delicious homestyle tipical Dominican food and portions are big and hearty so you can share with a friend. They have specials of the day and I would like to mention how affordable this place is, love it!
Mofongo $5 - Mashed Green Plantain, with fried pork chunks (chicharron), garlic and a beef sauce on the side to pour over. Delicious and so filling, i can eat this by itself as a meal.
Pastel en hoja $3.50 - Domincan-style tamale filled with lots of chicken. Served with a pink sauce.
Cocido $4.80 - Beef and vegetable soup. This soup will wake up the dead. Yup, it's good and a bowl will fill you.
Mondongo Tipico $4.80 - Tripe Soup (cow stomach). Ok so I got adventurous with this one. Takes a bit to like the flavor but it is a good soup. Tripe kind of taste like pig feet.
Service was great, food was what we needed and as "ratchet" as this place is, I want to come back at night to dance Merengue and Salsa. The waitress told me there is no cover on Fridays and Saturdays after 8pm and it is 18 and over.
