How to Spend a 24-Hour Staycation in Old Town Scottsdale - Eater Phoenix

"For a shot of local color (and cheap drinks), check out two of Old Town’s best dive bars — the Coach House (going strong since 1959) and Pattie’s First Avenue Lounge." - Nikki Buchanan

"A Coach House Christmas Tis the season to be jolly! If you’re feeling festive around the holidays or perhaps you want to keep Christmas going all year long, then a visit to the Coach House should be on your holiday wish list. When the holiday season approaches, Scottsdale locals make a trip to their favorite local watering hole to experience a festive spirit unlike anywhere else. Staffers shut down the joint for a few days in order to deck the bar from head to toe with wrapping paper, tinsel, ornaments and twinkle lights that overtake you with Christmas cheer. The bartenders and staff are laid back, friendly and really love what they do. Note: This place can get packed during the holiday season on a late Friday or Saturday night. And, the lights stay up all year!"

Why did it take me so long to find this long time dive bar staple in Scottsdale? It will from now on be our first stop when we are in town. You got to look the time and commitment it took to put up all the Xmas ornaments. Great fun patrons and bartenders. Drinks are priced right and ample.

Google
Beauty place we walked by and seen all the lights on our first night in town. A local told us about it a day later so we had to go back and check it out, glad we did. Sunday football, cold beers, good relaxed vibe and people! Cheers from SK Canada!

I came here after my 25-year high school reunion, and the experience at the door was incredibly disappointing. When I politely asked if there was any way to skip the line, the man at the door told us it would be $20 per person. I agreed and handed him the money, but he became rude and confrontational over the bills. When I told him he wasn’t being kind, he shoved the money back into my purse and told me to “get out of here.” I’ve tried calling the establishment several times to speak with a manager, but no one ever answers. No guest should be treated this way. This was unprofessional, disrespectful, and completely unnecessary. I hope management takes this seriously because this kind of behavior drives people away. I asked the young man to get a manager, and he said that he was the security manager and gave me a very nasty and mean look, dead in the eyes like I had done something so horrible to him. It hurts my heart that people behave like this. I hope that whoever runs this business reads this and realizes they should not hire such individuals. The picture below is of us at the Beverly down the street. We had a lovely evening. We didn’t let the rude security guy ruin our night.

Unique outdoor/indoor dive bar with Christmas vibes all year round. Good place to meet up and have a couple beers to start the night. Watched Sunday night football here while in town for a Rams playoff game and we had a fun night on the town.

Drawn to the lights. Had to check it out. All ages/styles there. Super cool. Just go and check it out.

Google
This is a Scottsdale staple especially known for it being completely decked out in lights for the holidays. Drinks are pretty cheap, and cash is best here. This place attracts an older crowd most times of the year, but attracts an eclectic group over all. Holidays you’ll get a mixed crowd because of the lights. This is a dive bar, a vibe, a local monument of sorts, must check out if you’re visiting.

Google
The hours of operation 6am-2am were the draw to check coach house entertainment! Dive bar feels with a patio and Christmas lights! No table service. Gotta go to the pay window to order your drink. You can smoke here. Chips and snacks available to purchase. We were there on a Sunday afternoon and a taco truck was parked. Got some tacos to go. The bartender said he’s only there on weekends. Sometimes they have a pizza guy at night. You can always order food via delivery service anytime! People from all walks of earth. As tourists it was a cool vibe. Very relaxed. Decent prices for drinks. I’d check this place out again. As I would recommending it as a place to even just have one drink!

Google
Such a great spot!! I could have hung out here all day but there was more of Scottsdale to see…the breakfast burritos were awesome and the guy just had a tip jar…. No charge! Beers were cold and it was very comfortable despite the heat once you stepped outside the patio.

Yelp
I had heard about Coach House from several friends and by some pure luck, I ended up at this dive bar on Christmas. A Christmas miracle of sorts. Coach House is a year-round Christmas-themed bar. Located in Old Town Scottsdale, a block or two away from Fifth Avenue, there's a parking lot that was pretty full when I arrived. If you can't find a spot, you can find some free street parking close by (max of three hours). Ambiance (4/5): A lot of holiday pop-ups these days have entrance fees and expensive holiday-themed cocktails. You'll find none of that pretentiousness here. There's no entrance fee and no elaborate cocktails. The reason to visit is the multitude of Christmas lights that adorn both the patio and the indoor area. There are also a bunch of TVs which makes it a good spot to check out the game. It's mostly a patio bar, but there is some room indoors too. As well as Golden Tee and another game. Service (4.5/5): There's a bouncer checking your ID before you come in. From there, there's a larger bar inside where you can order a drink from one of two bartenders (at least when I was there) or a smaller outdoor bar with one bartender (at least when I was there). There's a cash discount (which I always appreciate). What that means is that they don't charge you tax if you pay by cash. While the bar was busy, the bartenders working were efficient. Food (N/A): Coach House doesn't serve food but they did have a Mexican food truck posted up on the patio while I was there. I didn't have any food during my visit though. Drinks (N/A): Since The Coach House is a dive bar, expect a full bar, but don't expect fancy cocktails. Ordering simple mixed drinks or beer is the way to go. They were out of Montucky Cold Snacks so I went with a Woodchuck Cider for $6. Affordable prices in the heart of Scottsdale... I'll take that any day of the week! Speaking of Christmas miracles, while I was sipping my beer on the patio, I saw two black SUVs pull up. A group of people came out of the cars and there was one person who I immediately recognized. Former NBA MVP and multiple NBA all-star Steve Nash! As a big basketball fan, having a brew at the same bar as a Phoenix Suns legend was pretty epic. On Christmas nonetheless.

Yelp
Is the Coach house is in Arizona staples. However, I had a horrible experience this evening. Orlando was absolutely over the top road to me and my friends. I waited in line for 45 minutes to get into the Coach house. I paid $10 to get in and went inside with my friends. I popped outside to grab one of my friends who was in the front of the line in Orlando told me I had to go back to the end of the line and was extremely rude and aggressive. This is an overpriced over Kitchie ridiculous situation up in Scottsdale.
google avatar

Holly M.

Yelp
Cute dive bar in Scottsdale. I like to pop in around the holidays for some festive fun. The place is decorated throughout the winter months and is usually crowded. Seams to be a lot of regulars. I find both the bar staff and security staff to be friendly. Don't expect to find a nice wine or any but they have plenty of beer and can make most cocktails. They do have mini bottles of Cook's sparkling wine if you are looking for some bubbles but no prosecco. Hit it up for the holidays for the lights and fun crowds.

Yelp
Super fun atmosphere. Plenty of seating both inside and out. Plenty of TV's for game day viewing! Bathrooms are tiny and not very clean, but overall a great experience!

Yelp
It's an annual traditional amongst my friends to go to Coach House on Thanksgiving Eve. Every inch of the interior and exterior is covered with Christmas lights. It's a great way to get into the holiday mood. However, be ready for 45 minute line if you arrive after 8:30pm on that night. Most other nights there is no significant line. Prices are average for Old Town. It's no longer the dive bar deal or once was. As one of the oldest bars in Scottsdale, its western, dive bar, sports bar vibe is worth a stop.
google avatar

Renita

Yelp
Stood outside in line for almost 30 minites for no other reason than the fact that the mediocre band was in the middle of a set. Felt like a stunt to make it look like the place is a hot spot to those driving by. Either way, it was probably a blessing. It's an honest-to-goodness dive bar with tacky year-round Christmas decorations that burn the corneas. Think I dodged a bullet on this one. The vibe is mid-life crisis and long-term botox injections.

Yelp
Came here for new years and a birthday. Bouncer was the most incredibly rude human I've had the pleasure of interacting with. After half of our group went in we had a friend whose ID scanned but apparently said "invalid." Bouncer then threatened to not give our friend her ID back until we threatened to call the cops. Would not support a business when its employees interact with people like that.

Yelp
This place was the go to spot for a fun place to go around the holidays! It was PACKED throughout December and still see it busy in the months following that. Bartenders are friendly and you order st the bar on your own. Not too much seating as it's a smaller bar but lots of standing tables. The lack of seats didn't make me want to stay as long but the atmosphere kept us there for a few hours! Not your typical "Scottsdale place" but definitely a gem!

Emily G.

Yelp
Got kicked out by a bartender because I only had apple pay to Pay(which they don't have) and my friends card declined and kindly asked a stranger if I could Zelle him to buy us a drink. Was having a great night with all my friends who I get to see less then once a year. Seriously upsetting but what can you do. Would not advise going here if ur not ready to take bull shit from angry bartenders even when your using manners. Hadn't had more then 1 drink-- was truly a disgraceful way to treat an innocent customer. Asked the bouncer why we got kicked out and he couldn't give us a single reason. There's much better bars in old town I wouldn't waste my time trying this place.

Joycelinee F.

Yelp
Drinks are good and at a good price Would get effed up here again Halen is the best bartender

Yelp
Great local bar with friendly staff, cozy vibe, and solid drinks--perfect spot to relax and unwind."

Amy P.

Yelp
If you want a misogynistic/oppresive experience come here!!! Kicked me and a friend out of the bar. To explain further, my friend and I ordered two drinks and when it became time to pay, they do not except Apple Pay. As it is a bar and, furthermore, we did not bring our purses/physical wallets. Therefore, we did not have a physical card to pay and had to ask the man next to us if he could pay and we would zelle him. Around an hour later, we approach the bar again, the bartender immediately says "no" and "these girls couldn't pay, had another guy pay, and he didn't tip". We ask him kindly why he will not serve us and inform him that we received a friends card to pay, now that we know they only accept physical cards. He says no again and we walk away. As we are walking away I was grabbed agressivley by a man who says we need to get out immediately. I try asking this man the reason for us being kicked out and he can only say the bartender. So I'm not quite sure if we ignited a vendetta with him or what. But we payed 40 to skip the line and $80 on drinks. So to say I'm upset is an understatement. I don't understand this misogynistic treatment, although I am extremely disappointed. In, not only, the way we were kicked out and not the men, but how we were singled out and taken away from our friends for no reason! So if you want to be mistreated or disrespected, go here!

Jessica M.

Yelp
My friend and I were excited to go here last Sunday for the Bills game because I had been in the past (albeit probably 5+ years ago) and thought it would be a fun place to bring someone from out of town. The male bartender (someone said he was even the manager) was so rude. A man went up and asked him to put a certain game on and they went to get the remote. We then asked for the Bills game as the Giants game was already playing on 5 of the TVs and he said he doesn't change the channels and had a very rude attitude. We turned around and left and even the bouncer rolled his eyes when we told him the manager's response. Will not be going back.
google avatar

Victoria L.

Yelp
The cutest Christmas bar! The lights are up year round, but feel especially special during the holidays. We waited in line for about 30 minutes before getting in, but you could also pay $20 a head to the bouncers to skip the line. There is a full bar - their seltzers are high noons and there is a food truck there for little snacks and small bites!
google avatar

Charlotte K.

Yelp
Coach House in Scottsdale is a must-visit when it's decked out in its dazzling Christmas lights--an absolute spectacle! I don't live in the area so hard to say if I would be there throughout the year. I think there's a big opportunity missed when I found out that they don't put lights up or even change the light color for other holidays. That being said, the twinkling lights create the most festive and inviting atmosphere, making it feel like you've stepped into a winter wonderland. The drinks, while solid, are your typical bar fare--nothing overly remarkable, but perfectly enjoyable for the setting. The real charm of the place lies in its fun, laid-back vibe. It's a great social spot, especially outside, which is perfect for chatting and enjoying the lively atmosphere.

J P.

Yelp
Coach House has never let me down. Great place to watch a game, meet for drinks, stop in for a "short stay" and end up seeing more people you know, and end up staying the rest of the day and night. I do miss the old smaller building, but it's still a great place to spend some time. Don't miss this place during the holiday months.
google avatar

Josh G.

Yelp
This is a decent dive bar. Be prepared to wait to get inside, there will be a very, very long line. Parking is generally easy here. This dive bar attracts a very wide range of ages, so expect to run into all different types of people and generations here.
google avatar

Mitzy F.

Yelp
Cute little dive bar. The Christmas lights are up year round, but they added some fun decorations for the holiday! I've been here twice. The first time was no wait but the second time we waited a good 40 minutes in line. But hey, the holidays are always busy especially for a bar with Christmas lights around Christmas time. I like that they have water jugs and cups out to make it easy to stay hydrated.
google avatar

Sydney G.

Yelp
Absolutely loved my experience at Coach House! We'd just come from another spot in Scottsdale that was very pricey, so it was nice to be able to get some tasty refreshing drinks without breaking the bank. Our bartender (I think Drew was his name??) was super friendly with our group and gave us some great recommendations for quality food in the area to try before we left to go back to the East Coast. The vibe is immaculate -- Christmas lights from floor to ceiling? Yes please, sign me right up. The experience was 10/10 and if I ever find myself back in Scottsdale, Coach House will definitely be on my list of places to visit again!
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
I was riding by on a bus back from a work dinner, and all of a sudden a building is lighting up the darkness of a night like a Christmas tree. What on earth was it?! My colleague and I checked it on the map and saw that it was none other than Coach House, allegedly one of Scottsdale's oldest dive bars. On my last night in town, I made a point to go there, and I had no regrets! It's not just the outside that's completely lit up -- it's the inside too! It's quite photogenic, and the bartender was so friendly! For the area, the cocktails were priced at like $5-$6... so great in comparison! Shout out to the Family Guy pinball machine in the corner! I was really feeling the divey vibe. I think they have food too -- but I didn't get a chance to try it. Maybe next time! This place makes me want to visit the area again.
google avatar

Gina L.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Tuesday night since we've driven by a few times. Apart from the showy holiday lights, there's not much this place offers. There were maybe 10 or so people scattered throughout the bar. It seemed like regulars, most older than 40 years. Overall, pretty chill atmosphere. A bottle of Blue Moon or draft will run you $6. I wouldn't say the bartenders are nice, but they aren't rude either - they're just there. There are a couple TVs with ESPN on, a jukebox, and both indoor and outdoor seating (majority of it was outdoor seating). The indoor area had lights strung up on the walls (very on-brand) but they're harsh on the eyes with explosive neon blues. Must be 21+ to enter. Not sure I'd come back...
google avatar

Janda P.

Yelp
My favorite little "dive bar" while in town. With all of the fancy and pricy spots in town- this is my favorite spot for a cocktail and chill atmosphere. From the rooms adorned with mini Christmas lights to the bar top with Pennie's- this is a quaint spot to beat the bachelorette parties .
google avatar

Maria K.

Yelp
Fun spot! Heard some great live music coming out of dinner across the street and headed over. Glad we did. Fantastic band (Superhero), great mix of people of all different ages, good drinks and pretty Christmas lights. We had a really fun time!
google avatar

Jackie W.

Yelp
Very rude "security" people. Would not allow my service dog in. Called Scottsdale's finest. It's a dirty place would never return. Instead of saying they denied my dog, they said I trespassed...
google avatar

Christine T.

Yelp
How could you not love the Coach house? I walked over after the Canal Convergence event and had a beer before I called my Lyft to go home. They have all their Christmas lights up and it was packed. With so many changes in the neighborhood, and in life in general, it is like visiting an old friend for me always. I love this place.
google avatar

Alisa M.

Yelp
I'm gonna give this place 5 starts because it is the epitome of what a dive bar is supposed to be. Cheap cocktails and mixture of charactors. Young people mmixed with old, totally different goups all coexisting and having fun at an establishment. Oh and they have a tasty taco truck outside. Did I mention that the drinks are cheap? I felt like it was happy hour all day.
google avatar

Morgan B.

Yelp
For the type of place this is, it's 4 stars. Cheap drinks, good vibes, no entry fees or anything. You walk right up to the bar and essentially get drinks and can hang wherever. I will say it felt like an older scene though. If we were in the area I would stop by again. My only feedback is the bathroom could use a little makeover/ some hygiene maintenance.
google avatar

Lexi M.

Yelp
Now this is a dive bar. Cheap drinks and a place that has a great vibe. You could tell this spot housed most of the locals. Everyone is there was very friendly and gave us some great ideas for other bars. I love these type of bars!

lucy l.

Yelp
i was kicked out after i was harassed by 2 men. they kept instigating and bothering me, and when i finally fought back, the bouncers immediately removed me and yelled profanities at me. they called me a "c*nt" and made inappropriate towards gestures to me. i will be taking legal action
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Arrogant bartender, disrespectful to women, only later to find out from the staff that he's actually the manager. This past Saturday night I went to Coach House for the first time. I ordered a drink at the main bar inside. It was very busy and was taking a long time to make it. So I went to the bathroom and came right back. I was gone maybe 3 to 4 minutes. When I got back the bar manager had the drink sitting there and started yelling at me asking if I even wanted it. He taunted me holding the drink up and then pulling it back away as he said if I didn't want it he'd just take it back. He was so angry out of nowhere that I honestly was afraid he did something to the drink. So I said okay take it back and he immediately turned around and chucked it out. I was so thrown off and in shock of his behavior. I tried to ask him what I did wrong and he gave me more attitude, was extremely dismissive, waving me off and telling me to go away. I simply wanted to know what I could have possibly done to upset him so much but he wouldn't give me any explanation and just yelled at me not to talk to him. He was on such a power trip that he called a security guard over and told him to kick me out. I didn't argue and went with the security guard to the entrance. After I followed them out I was talking to the bouncer, still bewildered and trying to understand what just happened. Even more to my surprise, I found out that the bartender I ordered from was in fact the bar manager and so there was nothing they could do. My whole group saw all of this happening and left the bar because of it. I feel extremely disrespected by the way your bar manager treated me and the complete lack of regard he showed for his actions. I fear for any other women that have to interact with him and for the rest of your staff having someone as arrogant and inconsiderate as him in a management position.
google avatar

Fabian P.

Yelp
09/06/24 8:29pm we went to the Coach House with our three dogs and security out front told us no pets even though petfriendlyrestaurants.com says the establishment is pet friendly. We went somewhere else.
google avatar

Bianka G.

Yelp
Very cool dive bar. Friendly staff and quick service. Who doesn't like Christmas lights in FEBRUARY?! Haha it sets up a festive mood which I think everyone is out to find. They don't serve food at the main bar but they have a great food cart standing by. We ordered nachos and asada tacos and they were so bomb. Like really good. Even the salsa was good. You just place your order and they bring it to you. Would definitely come here again to hang out with friends.
google avatar

Kendra M.

Yelp
When I first visited this place my timing must have been bad. Still kinda smelly still have cigarette smoke everywhere and the drinks are still so so. Do not order anything complicated. BUT they are open early in the morning and when you're working nights in trauma and need to gather the troops after a tough night, Coach house is always here to support our needs :) Love it at Christmas when it's plastered in Christmas lights.
google avatar

Ken R.

Yelp
Cool little dive bar during the holidays. We visited on a Wednesday night 12.20.23 around 7pm. No lines and it wasn't super busy. They have a big outside patio and the inside is small but decked out in Christmas lights. Our friend forgot her ID which was unfortunate but the security guard did try to bribe her and told her "if you would give a little cash tip, we can work something out". Welp. No cash on her. No bribe tip for him sadly. We enjoyed the night elsewhere.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
The novelty of this "supposed oldest Scottsdale" bar wears off quickly and it's really just another poorly run crappy dive bar. Drinks are expensive given the (lack of) ambience and selections are incredibly limited. Only a couple taps and one disgusting seltzer option. Pours are skimpy as well. There is no kitchen, sometimes a guy that bbqs outside on weekends. So the food options are stale bags of chips. If you're a tourist looking for a photo op, I can understand the appeal. But really it's mostly sad drunks, salty bartenders and bad attitudes. I had a particularly unpleasant encounter with an individual named Drew claiming to be the manager, who was rude and disrespectful for no reason whatsoever. Oh and the entire outside is smoking, so if you don't like your refreshments inhaled with smoke it's not your place. I really don't recommend.

Daniel M.

Yelp
This is not a dive bar in any way shape or form. Just a bunch of over-dressed, slimy hair gel, Scottsdale douchebags acting like it's a club and trying to pick up everything that moves. Too bad because the place is really nice and has good service! 5 stars if it wasn't for the clientele!
google avatar

Tamara N.

Yelp
Neighborhood bar with a fun twist of a year-round Christmas theme that truly lights up starting in November. Drinks are moderately priced and generously poured. Be ready to order, as the bartenders quickly move to the person in line if you hesitate. Attracts all different types of local and tourist personalities. Sometimes has live music and is always a good time. Be prepared to wait in line to get in on busy weekends. Oh, and if you're lucky, a food truck will be in the parking lot or they might have hamburgers and hotdogs on the patio. Check it out, you won't regret it.
google avatar

Just F.

Yelp
Well, to start, this is not a Christmas Dive Bar, they barely had lights or decorations to boot. We have travelled the US and lived in Chicago & Portland, OR, hit dive bars in a lot of cities, this is just a run of the mill cheap local bar in a touristy area with some sketchy patrons, the service was good, but If you want to enjoy the larger outside area, you better not mind cigarette smoke or the local intoxicated patrons trying to strike up convo., Just our opinion, enjoy.
google avatar

Stephen B.

Yelp
Great spot to hang out for Arsenal Match in a convenient location. Friendly staff and reasonable prices

The B T.

Yelp
Me and my family visit Scottsdale several times a year and have driven by The Coach House several times and thought it looked fun. Today we decided to stop in to watch a football game and drink a few beers. This old grumpy bartender was a total douchebag after I stood in line to order 2 beers. It's sad that this establishment employs people that are miserable obviously have angry management issues and are unhappy in life. I'm 60 years old and was treated like bar trash by this loser. NOT CLASSY.. VERY TRASY ....
google avatar

Krissy H.

Yelp
We came here because it came up on one of the five best places for Christmas bar, yeah not so much. I asked her a grapefruit and vodka but got a Cranberry vodka was not asked what kind of vodka, Also we ordered a ginger whiskey, nasty whiskey. Not recommended

Mark B.

Yelp
WATCH OUT FOR THE ROOFIE! 1 star because my wife and I were roofied. I don't want to say it was an employee but I'm a realist. We literally had three pitchers (to share) over 4 hours. The bartender (long dark hair male) was starting to get pissed because we used the same card. Finally, our 4th and final purchase after another great night at Coach was each taking a shot of tequila. Maybe 10 minutes after the shot, we were both shaking as if we just took 10 shots each. When we got home, we both threw up. We were sick for 3 days after. Coach house was our favorite bar. We used to go every Tuesday. Never again.

This place has always been a tradition of mine during the holidays. I was so happy it was still open during the pandemic and my recent visit back to PHX! Still had to wait in line but it was fun to people watch while in line and we ended up scoring a cozy seat, socially distanced, in the corner...almost inside. They now have a taco truck if you fancy some food...we opted out as we just wanted to enjoy the Christmas decor & cocktails! They did a great job about making sure people stayed seated and our bartenders/servers were friendly & fast!!

Yelp
This place is LIT...literally. I was in Scottsdale for a wedding and met some friends at the coach house. From the outside it really didn't look like much so I wasn't too happy when we had to wait in line for awhile in the cold. Once we got in though and especially once I went fully inside to the bar to get a drink I realized why there was a line. If you love a good dive bar and also love to be festive during the holidays you need to stop by. The place is COVERED in Christmas lights it's honestly super impressive now they do it. I heard they leave it up till superbowl since it's just such an effort to put up. Drinks are insanely cheap and if you're hungry they've got a food truck at the front of the lot. Overall super fun place to visit during the holidays!

Yelp
I'm very on the fence on this establishment. For the most part it's chill vibes and welcoming. If you're white. I see smiles and positive attitude from bartenders when they're helping white people. Smile turns upside down when I walk up. Whatever, could just be in my head. Weird though, despite having a front porch/patio area, you actually cannot take drinks out to that area. So you're confined to only enjoying your drink under the roof area. Which obviously during the summer is preferred but idk, during the nice months I'd like to be under the sun in a comfortable fashion. Idk. Not a place I'll willingly or actively seek to go to any further.

Yelp
Bartender illegally changed tip amount Was here on 12/3 and purchased $45 of drinks for my friend group. I retained my copy of the receipt with the tip I provided. The bartender was sketchy and provided poor service, therefore my tip was minimal. The bill has successfully gone through with an amount $8 higher than I tipped, meaning the bartender changed the tip amount, which is illegal. Watch out for this place, fortunately I wasn't impaired so I caught this, but I'm sure this specific bartender has done this before.

Yelp
Love this place! Definitely a dive bar but from the months of November through January, they deck the entire place in Christmas lights. It's normally jam packed but with COVID, you must be seated and stay at your table. They typically have $7 beer pitchers. There is a Mexican food truck out front that you can order from and eat in the restaurant.
