"Coastal Seafood’s “divey” new bar and cafe is now open in St. Paul. Google
Great lobster rolls! The market is in the front and the cafe is in the back. I had a lobster roll and I loved the size - not too big, but densely packed with fresh, moist lobster. Service was so friendly, you order at the counter and they bring it to your table. There's takeout but not alcohol yet - that's coming as soon as their license is set. Cute looking patio too! Also note that I did not see an entrance without steps, the front entrance has two steps up to enter.

Google
An amazing selection of fish and seafood. Their new location is larger and better land out. The staff was great and very knowledgeable. Prices are comparable with and high end location.

Google
So excited the café is open! The grilled fish tacos were the best I've ever had, perfectly tender inside and seasoned, fresh corn tortillas, slaw, and sauce. They have a beautiful patio and really friendly staff to boot. I can't wait to spend the summer here.

Google
This is the place to go for seafood with a cute patio! They have great selection for oysters and incredible meals. The lobster roll being one of my favorite in the menu!

Google
I moved to St Paul from the Pacific Northwest and vowed I wouldn't eat seafood here! I'm happy to say Coastal Seafoods has proven that their beautiful, fresh, tasty offerings exceed all expectations! Their seafood case is loaded with fresh offerings, including shellfish. Their selection of frozen crab legs is amazing, and the store offers so many canned varieties of anchovies, sardines, octopus, mackerel, oysters, clams... the list goes on and on and on.... You really need to experience it for yourself. The staff was friendly, helpful, and very cool. I can't wait to go back! Cheers, Coastal Seafood!!

Google
Visited the St Paul location on 06/14/24. The 3 stars are an average 4 stars for the employees and 2 stars for the food. I ordered the fish and chips. The batter was too thick and not totally cooked. I also had the clam chowder. The residents of New England have nothing to worry about.. The tarter sauce was more like ranch dressing. I expected better and for $40 should have received better..

Google
The cafe is awesome. We had the lobster roll and fish tacos and they were both fantastic. The staff was super helpful and very friendly as well!

Google
Selection is good. Quality is good. Staff is friendly and helpful. I hope they can make a deal with the neighboring merchants for off-street parking, though. One thing I like about the previous location was the public parking around the corner. It was hassle free, plus I could stop by and pick up some bread at Breadsmith.

Yelp
Always fresh seafood, and a great selection. Usually several different species of wild-caught salmon to choose from. It's my go-to place for cod, fresh shrimp, oysters, and smoked whitefish, but they also carry a wide variety of other fresh fish and shellfish flown in daily. It's a slightly guilty indulgence given the climate impact of flying all this stuff in, but I manage to convince myself that as long as I don't overdo it, the taste and health benefits of an occasional meal of really fresh, sustainably caught seafood outweigh the carbon impact. Helpful, knowledgeable staff are a plus.

Yelp
I've been coming to Coastal Seafood for close to a decade. In the past year, I don't know what's up with the St Paul location, both old and new. The service is widely terrible lately and it's been several instances at this location only, MPLS is great. I don't need people to be super friendly or even kind, but how about just don't have an attitude or be rude without it being warranted. It's not every employee in the store, but there's always one for sure. You ask a question and the tone of the response is like you ruined their day, you are the most annoying person in the history of the planet. The response says - don't even show your face there or anywhere in the vicinity because you are irritating for existing. I wish I could record them and play it back to them like, look at you, this is not normal at a place of business. They need to chill, call in sick, or don't have a job...I don't know, do something though. Every time I just want to be like, "Yo, are you okay??" "Can I recommend a therapist?" I'm legit afraid to go to St Paul location because I know I'll leave upset at how I was spoken to and treated. I just want normal customer service. I'll even take just mediocre, no above and beyond or friendliness required. For the love of seafood, just please leave the attitude and snarky responses at home.

Yelp
Food is okay in taste but super pricey. The sandwiches were very salty for some reason. On a note, the place is very boring designed. They don't have but strange root beer drinks options and no other drinks. It's very casual and you have to order at the cashier to get your food. No table service.

Yelp
My wife and I were on our weekly "New restaurant Saturday" lunch and my brother-in-law recommended the crab smash from Coastal Seafoods. We took the twenty minute drive from Edina and the place is full of fresh fish and the back has a cafe area where there was a man eating fish and chips with his boy that looked really good. My crab smash was ready in about 7 minutes and I took it to go to Bang brewery. The sandwich was really tasty and full of crab, but really greasy for some reason. Not sure if it was the sauce or maybe a lot of butter on the bun? It was good though, not sure I would go back, but after tip, it was a little under $20. Good service too.

Yelp
Costal helped us to get the PERFECT seafood for a boil! We all agreed that the snow crab was the best we've ever had. Meaty, flavorful, so sweet... my mouth is watering just writing about it! The shrimp and lobster was equally amazing. The scallops ran out before our eyes, so we had to go elsewhere for them, but I hope to get those on the next run! Pricing is awesome for the quality. We got everything we needed for a boil for five for under $200.

Yelp
Thought I'd give an updated review for Coastal, considering I sorta scream about how much I love them on random street corners. The fish is incredibly fresh and the weekly specials offer great deals. Since my last review I've been able to try some of their homemade items and I really enjoy their seafood bakes and soups. Their selection of pantry items is great too, always something new to try out. The employees are also very honest and informative. Just had some of their lovely Verlasso salmon for dinner, got a big bag of clam chowder to enjoy for several lunches, and probably ordering a whole fish or a couple filets in less than a week. If you want delicious seafood, this is really the best purveyor in the city.

Yelp
Stopped at Coastal Seafood on my way home from work today wanting a seafood treat to make for dinner. The guy behind counter said today was their last day of a sale on their Chilean Sea bass fresh, never frozen so I bought a lb. Upon opening the package it was SUPER stinky fish smelling, ( I heard that should never be) but ate it anyway and yuk! It tasted fishy, I have never had Sea bass that tasted fishy before. Being today is the end of the sale I am wondering if the fish was old and on its way out. Hope the shrimp I bought tastes better. And I also hope this does not ruin me for my love of sea bass in the future. Waste of $30.00 for sure. Our house stinks so bad, I have candles going and we literally are putting our Griswold cast iron pan that we cooked the fish in through soapy water, which we have NEVER done but need to get that taste out of it. This is for sure my last time I think I will be trying this store. Never had any problem from our Fish we have purchased from Costco.

Yelp
This St. Paul location is very disappointing. Rude, and unprofessional staff at this location comparing to the MSPL store. Bought a lb of Ora King salmon, asked if I want to keep the skin, and I said YES. Two minutes later this guy turned back to me said he accidentally threw away the salmon skin that I PAID for. Like what do you expect me to say? Are you offering me a discount or you just want to see if I want the skin back from your trash can??? Then there are ZERO price tags on all the shelf products. None. I grabbed a mirin bottle and a box of spice and realized that the price was way higher than I expected. So I immediately went back and asked if I can return the item and I was told store manager is not here, come back tomorrow. There are three or four guys working in this store, not a single person can do a return transaction? You must be kidding. This location is not doing any good to the Coastal Seafood brand. I love the MSPL location. Should stick with the main campus even thought I live in St. Paul.

Yelp
Have been there before for years, but things are going worse every time and not excuses about Covid anymore. The service is not as usual. The seafood supply in stock is not only very low and minimal but also it looks out of date. Today for example there was no fresh shrimp of any kind. The frozen shelves same situation. Disorganized and crappy. Entering there looks like that they are going out of business. Pretty sad. It is not, but it looks like that. Not interest to serve and bring good seafood as they claim.

Bruce M.

Yelp
Great fish and helpful staff. I have been there many times. It was very busy and they handled the crowd of people very well.
google avatar

Iillaana W.

Yelp
So happy I found this place! I love to get the sashimi grade salmon or trout form here.

Matt H.

Yelp
This location is hit or miss. There are staff that are extremely insightful and patient and staff that are quite the opposite, and that is putting it nicely. I have never felt so uncomfortable asking questions by staff. I could tell by other people in the waiting line that they all felt like they were on pins and needles.
google avatar

Yelp
Coastal Seafoods is a local business that I am happy to support during these stressful times of uncertainty. They offer the highest quality of sushi grade fish in all of the twin cities. I fell in love with Ora King salmon during one of their sushi 101 classes, which was a ton of fun and they roll out the best quality and huge portions of fish. I get Hamachi here regularly and it's pretty dang good. During COVID-19 they are offering curb side orders, which means you drive up and they come out to your car wearing protective gear and take your order. I'm grateful that they're still open right now. They even still honored the every Friday 20% discount for students and educators. Top notch local business.

Carter L.

Yelp
Absolute worst service I could have ever experienced never coming again the rudest employee belittling the customer about their knowledge of fish like come on
google avatar

Preston B.

Yelp
I get all my fish from here. The business is really clean and open. This is another place that has a great weekly sale. They carry some of the freshest fish in Saint Paul. I love shopping. The Prince Edward Island mussels are always amazing. They ever have Foie Gras. Please visit the store you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Debbie O.

Yelp
So disappointed. Paid $20.00 for this 1 lb. of Steelhead trout. I asked for 2 filets and I got this crap...had a fin attached (and inedible cartilage/bone attached to it) with numerous pin bones (they said they'd remove the pin bones.) Also, look at the picture...it looks as though they cut it with a lawnmower. I wanted the skin on for a pan seared crispiness but the skin was torn and loose. WTH, Coastal? Such a disappointment. Is Edward Scissorhands behind the counter? Looking for a new fish monger.

Betz Z.

Yelp
Most of the fish is farmed not fresh - not much selection even in frozen wild caught. Do the research. Farmed fish is not better for the environment or for human consumption.
google avatar

Ethan T.

Yelp
Great customer service both in person & over the phone. Large selection! If you're placing a phone order for pick up, the store appreciates at least 2 days advance notice. The store is now open for in-store shopping. I look forward to visiting again!
google avatar

Janet W.

Yelp
Amazing place. Always high quality products. Specials every day. If you love seafood you will love Coastal Seafood.
google avatar

Jane C.

Yelp
I love this place. I got some really good sushi grade tuna. I made some spicy tuna rolls with it. I am impressed by the quality. I will always come back. They also have good safety measures, six customer are allowed in the place. Social distancing is well done here.
google avatar

Kathryn O.

Yelp
Warning: Coastal Seafoods in St. Paul seems to be struggling with the online delivery platform they're using. One item in our order was missing altogether, and they substituted a less expensive item for the more expensive item we ordered while still charging us for the more expensive item. The quality of the seafood is still there; the quality of the customer service is not.

Yelp
Overall: 5 stars Best Twin Cities fishmonger with an awesome rotating variety of fresh fresh. Ambience: 4.5 stars Fresh briny seafood & fish smell welcomes upon entrance. Next senses excited are the anticipated brisk temperature to maintain freshness of goods & impressive visual array of goods. Food: 5 stars Wonderful selection in display cases including salt & seawater options. I've purchased Hawaiian Opah (moonfish), multiple varieties of salmon, tuna, trout, oysters, mussels, and shrimp/prawns. They also offer sashimi grade fish if your menu dictates. All purchases have been fresh & superior quality. The goods are pricier than found at Your local Cub or Hy-Vee, but the freshness is what you're paying for. Be sure to check their daily specials posted on their website. Service: 5 stars Servers are down to business & efficient, truly Scandinavian experience! They will gladly supply ice if you are driving a distance - especially needed to keep those mollusks cold! They also are happy to recommend best cooking methods for selection & havevrecipes on-hand Whole fish is typically pre-gutted, fish can be de-scaled upon request. Mussels come pre-cleaned & debearded, no extra cost as in some other places. Pricier as previously mentioned, but worth every penny!

Yelp
My family has loved getting seafood from here over the last few years. on fridays they have a student discount (10% off) valid with any ID. different days of the week they also have different deals as well which is so nice. the food is very fresh here and they're always so helpful.
google avatar

Mahva J.

Yelp
We usually end up here on a Saturday afternoon to pick up some fish and/or seafood for me to cook for that night's dinner. The folks here are friendly and aren't pushy. They answer questions without bother. We've not had a bad experience with anything we've purchased here. I get their emails, so I try to get the featured items before they're gone. The prices at reasonable, considering that we're not near the ocean. The products are fresh and they have a fair amount of sustainable items available. These are for what we go when shopping. The parking lot is a bear, as it's small and you must compete with Caribou visitors. Yet, it's worth the hassle. One thing I love about this place is that they ALWAYS ask if you want ice for your purchase. We always forget to bring a cooler or the like, even though the visit is planned. The ice makes us all feel safer.

Yelp
OMG!!! Two out of three staff members were very rude & uninviting. I was finally waited on after I approached the sales person. Unexceptable. However I still managed to give them a large sum of my good money for King Crab legs that had very little taste.

T C.

Yelp
The fish is as fresh as it can be. Doesn't sit around at all, the staff has always been very knowledgeable. They can help you to the point that people rave, about the way I can grill fresh salmon.

Amy M.

Yelp
My daughter is allergic to shellfish and can no longer go to a sushi restaurant (too much risk of cross-contamination). Coastal seafoods sushi grade tuna and salmon is consistently fresh and delicious. Now we make sushi at home, and it's so good! They are so careful to keep the shellfish separate- we've never had any problems.
google avatar

Rhonda G.

Yelp
I like that they offer discounts on certain days. Tues. is senior citizens, Wed. is all crab meat. I was looking for cooked lobster to try a recipe in my new book for a macaroni salad. They only had 2# of frozen. So for $80, possibly a once in a lifetime event I splurged. I thawed it out and squeezed out all the water (this step is important, for the crab as well). Well the salad was a hit at the potluck dinner I went to. I could have used the leftover for a lobster roll, but I opted to make more salad. The food they used to give prisoners, until one of the presidents declared it a delicacy, even though there's plenty of it, is one of the reasons I'm a conspiracy theorist.

Yelp
This has always been my favorite place to buy seafood but when I was looking for somewhere to go where I could get some knowledge on homemade sushi, Coastal wasn't the first thought. But after doing a little research, I saw they offered sushi making classes so I figured they had to know what was needed to make sushi at home. For the life of me, I can't remember his name but the brown hair, bearded man with glasses was more than willing to answer all my questions and give any advice! He helped with everything from choosing the right Nori to the best sushi rice and of course recommended his favorite fish and what fish looked best for that day. He was extremely helpful and made a very intricate meal much less stressful! Without his help, I don't know if the sushi would have turned out or if we would have even attempted it at all! So thank you again for all the help. I will be coming back again soon to make some more rolls!!
google avatar

Amanda V.

Yelp
I can't believe they made me wait 50 min for nothing ! Don't you have an inventory of what you can sell that day ? They made me wait 30 min to tell me that it'll take 20 more minutes to get 3lbs of mussels ! I waited 20 more minutes in the rain for them to realize that their last bag was bad and that they couldn't sell it. I know that at least I didn't get bad mussels but couldn't you figure that out earlier ? It shouldn't take you 50 minutes to figure out you don't have what people ordered !
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
Fresh as it can get. This place is the best for any kind of fresh seafood I love getting the sushi grade salmon. The employees are always so helpful in answering any questions I may have. They also have a good variety of sauces, toppings, and cooking ingredients to come up with a mean dinner menu. Finishing touch love the cute treasure chest by the door filled with goodies for the kids. Parking does suck they have two spots in front of the place 15min only though
google avatar

Zoua H.

Yelp
Weekly specials. I always have to try to resist going every Thursday for the 20% off salmon special. I love being able to get quality seafood. Great staffs that are helpful and nice. Never had a bad experience at all.
google avatar

Sherry S.

Yelp
In my humble opinion, everybody needs a couple of key vendors a good baker, either a great butcher or meat farmer, and and excellent fish monger. In my mind Coastal Seafoods fits the bill for excellent fishmonger. Take today for example, I stopped by because my husband had mentioned that he felt like eating fish tonight. As I was looking at the available fish, a good variety of both wild caught and farmed, I noticed that they had some deeply discounted wild caught sword fish, but it did not look quite right to me, it was more gray than pink. So, I asked the guy behind the counter. He told me very frankly that it didn't look quite right to him either and very kindly redirected my attention to a couple of other offerings after asking about my intended use. I really appreciated his candor and it is part of what has made me a fairly regular customer for years. Thank you!
google avatar

Betsy F.

Yelp
The best. So good. Kinds and knowledge staff. The only place to get sashimi grade fish in the twin cities!
google avatar

Amy R.

Yelp
Much like Bath and Bodyworks, I could never spend all day working in a heavily scented place. I get it; it's going to smell like fresh fish. Despite the smell, this place is top shelf for seafood. Purchased a couple pounds of fresh scallops for New Years Day. While expensive, they were worth every penny. Plump Super Fresh Turned out perfect- but that part of thanks goes to my dad for searing them perfectly. Lots of cool spices. Place was super busy! Definitely the place to go for fresh seafood. Scallops were amazing!
google avatar

K. Cee S.

Yelp
Don't know if the fish is good yet. Just bought it. But the two guys working behind the counter today were not friendly. Did not smile the WHOLE time I was in the joint. I asked a question about the Tuesday discount and the guy was super condescending. I'm going to start bringing other people's bad behavior to light.
google avatar

Christina R.

Yelp
Was recommended as the freshest seafood in the twin cities and after 3 different experiences at Coastal, my family strongly agrees. This last weekend, we purchased Ahi Tuna and Sashimi Salmon for a sushi party. It was good enough to impress our guests visiting from Japan! Highly recommend stopping in!

Erin C.

Yelp
Stopped by to get sushi-grade tuna and salmon for poke. The fish was the best sushi-grade fish I've ever purchased in the Twin Cities! It's not cheap, but is worth the cost. Our sushi-aficionado guests were very impressed with the freshness, taste, and overall quality of the fish! At the end of the night, there was nothing left - just happy, full bellies. While the fish is the main draw at Coastal, there are other items worth checking out. Upon check out I was offered a free sample of their seaweed salad. It was so delicious I had to get some of that, too. It was the perfect complement to our poke! They also have a small selection of specialty items that are often paired with fish (like specialty rice, sauces, spices, etc.) I was able to find every uncommon item I needed for our poke on their shelves. Stop by Coastal Sea Food the next time you need fresh fish. After one try, you will never go anywhere else!
google avatar

Catherine F.

Yelp
If the girl who helped me hadn't been there I'd have missed out. The fish is fresh every day and the albacore sashimi is the best I've ever had. Ever. Ever ever. I also got steelhead trout and made sashimi with it. So fresh. I bought mackerel, clams and jumbo shrimp to grill and my entire purchase was 28 bucks. Sweet.
google avatar

Richard R.

Yelp
Went there on sunday to get scallops and shrimp. The staff were very helpful the sea food was amazing. The prices were good too.
google avatar

Maggie M.

Yelp
If you are looking for fresh seafood, this is the place to go. (Just don't go after a night of drinking...) As you open the door your senses are on red alert for what seafood choices you will find. We head here for different seasons and reasons. One of us simply loves all fish, the other loves shellfish, that would be me! The staff is great to work with, they can give you advise on the different types of seafood. They also carry some canned goods, noodles and crusty bread. They even carry some smoked fish and anchovies. It's grilling season!
google avatar

Todd L.

Yelp
Stopped in to pick up shrimp for dinner. Guy behind the counter was extremely patient and helpful. I asked him a question about the Black Garlic product in the shelf and he went into the back and brought out an opened jar and let me sample it and made suggestions on how to use it. I was not aware of any sales/ discounts- he let me know it was 20% of shrimp Monday and gave me the discount... he could have not said anything. He also asked if I needed ice in case I had any additional stops before I reached my destination... Awesome service!!
google avatar

Heidi S.

Yelp
My cousin and I came here to pick up some seafood to grill last Friday and I was immediately impressed by how knowledgeable and friendly the staff was. Fresh is an understatement here....one of the best ahi tuna steaks ever..and I live in San Francisco...who knew I had to come to MN to have a great slice of tuna!! With very little prep work and throwing it on the grill for a little bit of cook time I was eating and loving every bite! Great place to pick up sea food in the cities. Check this place out if you can!
google avatar

Rakhi N.

Yelp
I love this place. The employees are knowledgeable and answer all of my questions. We come here for oysters, sashimi grade fish, wild shrimp, and king crab, among other items. Their website lists their weekly specials that I like to take advantage of. The shop is clean and the fish is fresh!
google avatar

Dana H.

Yelp
I called to see if they were open on Christmas Eve. They told me yes and that I should preorder. I got there it was extremely busy, which I knew it would be. The issue that I have is that there was no one organizing people as they came in. No one knew if there was a line to order or to pay. It was chaos. I waited longer than I would have if I hadn't preordered. When I finally got my order, all my paper wrapped fish was sitting in a giant pool of water inside a plastic bag.I had to pick tiny pieces of paper off my fish before cooking it. Not cool! I will never preorder again. They need a better system on busy days.
google avatar

Keith F.

Yelp
The freshest seafood in town and the best place to get sushi-grade sea-dwelling creatures. This location is equally as good as the bigger location in Minneapolis (off Minnehaha). Friendly staff too.
google avatar

Zachary S.

Yelp
It smells like fish in here. Sorry, had to. Very glad they are here. I prefer this location to their cousin in Mpls. They are friendly and know their fish. Please take advantage of their knowledge. Oh, and the fish? It is FRESH. I asked the guy how fresh last week and he said: "It was probably swimming around in the the ocean 12 hours ago." oh yeah.
google avatar

Victor M.

Yelp
The best fish in the Minnesota. The people are very knowledgeable on cooking the types of fish. The deals are great. They also sell greaattt olives
google avatar

Dan W.

Yelp
Great selection and a really knowledgable staff, which is incredibly useful if you're looking to try something new!

Keith S.

Yelp
As I'm about to exit Coastal Seafoods...I ask: Keith: "How long have you been in this location?" Coastal: "Oh...12-14 years or so." Keith: ....blank stare. "Oh." What?? I lived down the street and I thought the Mpls location was the only one. How dense am I? Sigh. Coastal is great. I love them not just because they have great seafood, but because they have all the cool stuff you want to prepare or serve your seafood with that even the hip grocers don't have (or I can't find). And the staff. They know what they're talking about. I had a nice conversation about which salmon to choose for what I was making, got the recommendation...and 48 hours ate the best gravlax I've ever had. It's probably good I don't live right down the street anymore, I'd over indulge on the reg.
