Beautiful, cozy space in a beautiful neighborhood location, and they serve baked goods from Farina Bakery which are amazing. My latte tasted good but the espresso felt watery and not velvety. However the barista was awesome and very accommodating ❤️.

I had the pleasure of visiting Coava Coffee recently, and I must say, it's a coffee lover's paradise! The rich, robust flavors of their coffee are simply exceptional. What sets Coava apart is their commitment to using only the finest quality materials, resulting in a cup of coffee that's truly top-notch. The atmosphere here is another highlight. It strikes the perfect balance between a cozy, welcoming vibe and a fun, energetic environment. Whether you're looking for a spot to have a quick business meeting or just want to catch up with a friend, Coava Coffee provides the ideal backdrop. If you haven't been already, make it a point to stop by Coava Coffee – it's a must-visit destination for anyone who appreciates the art of coffee-making.

Google
Chill cafe, kind staff, competitive pricing, yummmmy homemade vegetarian marionberry pop tarts, delicious coffee. My one complaint: only ONE size of coffee cup and it's only about 10oz... I didn't want to have to order two to go, that's cumbersome.

We visited in an afternoon visiting Portland. Excellent cappuccino! Loved the vibe. Just wish there could have been some comfy chairs to relax in!

Google
I love the coffees here. They all taste so good. The drinking room is charming and cozy with a fireplace. The staff are very friendly a lot of coffee to choose from. As for the coffee beans, they have a lot more selection than a supermarket. Stay there and treat yourself for a nice cup of coffee.

Google
Great coffees and espressos, cozy atmosphere right on Hawthorne. The floor drops down a couple steps creating a unique tucked in atmosphere. I got here at 11am on a Sunday and it was basically packed. Lots of younger people with unique fashion and hairdoos. It's January and they kept the door open, the breeze felt nice and it wasn't all that cold. They offer two medium roasted espressos both from Central America, and various teas. I would recommend this place for small groups, coffee dates, or solo coffee outings.

Google
Coffee is of course incredible at Coava. Pastries could use a lift though. $6.50 for a croissant that has chocolate bricked at the bottom is crazy in a city that has amazing fresh baked pastries in every other cafe. These tasted like they were sitting across the street at Safeway overnight. They also have no way to heat them up so unless you get there at opening time your pastry will be crusty and dry. Aside from that, decent spot to work remotely from. Lots of natural light, ample seating. Cozy couch spots if wanted.

Google
Beautiful coffee shop with high ceilings, cozy spots to hangout both inside and outside. Limited coffee selections but coffee was great!

Yelp
Very interesting interior with local made wooden tables that also go on sale. Coffee was great and baristas were super nice with recommendations and explanations of each beans.

Yelp
I came on a Thursday afternoon and it was almost empty. The interior was very nice and it's a good study/WFH spot. The baristas/cashiers were friendly and I ordered a small iced vanilla latte. It was ok. I could barely taste the coffee flavor and it was super milky. This was more like an iced milk with light hints of coffee.

Yelp
Cute, cozy and modern feeling coffee shop located in Hawthorne district. It was a cloudy and little rainy day when we went and the perfect time and place to enjoy a nice cup of coffee. Coava was the perfect pick! They have beautiful paintings/pictures of Oregon on their walls which add to the nice aesthetic. The baristas were super nice and friendly with the customers. I enjoyed sitting there and having my cup of coffee (latte). It was very relaxing.

Yelp
What's up: We've had Stumptown before, so we wanted to try out a different place and see how their drinks were. Coava was a place that showed up frequently on my searches, so we added that to our list. Parking: Street parking. Environment: They have indoor and outdoor seating available. The order counter is located to the right upon entry and restrooms are to the left of the order counter. The menu is displayed on the wall behind the order counter. Whole beans and swag is also available for purchase. What was ordered: - Americano (good) - Matcha (light flavor) - Latte (good) Yay/Nay/Meh: Yay. The staff member was friendly and the place was busy but quiet. Overall, the drinks were decent. Credit cards are accepted.

Yelp
Pretty good coffee. I got there around 7 on a Fri and it wasn't busy. By the time I left around 11 it had filled up. A good amount of indoor space, with outlets and WiFi. Some small tables outside as well. I got the cappuccino. Well made but nothing extraordinary. Their menu is all of the classic coffee drinks. No fancy or seasonal drinks from what I could tell. Service was friendly and quick.

Laurie K.

Yelp
Delicious iced decaf americano and Farina made marionberry pop-tart. Super knowledgable staff. Can't wait to try their caf beans tomorrow
google avatar

Wendi K.

Yelp
I got a Dirty Chai Latte with Almond Milk ($6) and it was fine. Nice Microfoam. Only one size for Lattes (10 oz). The interior is cozy and nice and would be great for spending a while in.
google avatar

Yolanda R.

Yelp
Cool coffee shop: yummy coffee (breve) and baked goods (handmade Marionberry pop tart from a local bakery). Staff are very friendly, professional and attentive. Large space and good for knitting and socializing. Definitely want to return with my family and friends.
google avatar

Yelp
I was NOT at all impressed with this place. Not only was their entire staff noticeably on drugs and/or hungover, they don't even offer Soymilk as an option but have stodgy Oatmilk with unskilled staff.
google avatar

Stephanie F.

Yelp
Met this cutie pie Natalie today who made me a delicious latte. The staff is down to earth and friendly. Nice chill ambiance, lots of seating, and a fireplace?! I'm so down!
google avatar

Yelp
Decent coffee. I was expecting more coffee bean types to be available at a coffee roaster store but I guess this store didn't have that many options the morning I came. Got an Ethiopian espresso that was pretty good. This location doesn't offer pour overs either- just drip coffee. Not sure if that was a one time thing when I visited or if it's an everyday thing. The drip I got was the LOS Naranjos and it was lightly acidic. Not very fruity. Acceptable for the morning. They have gluten free options! The gluten free date bar I got was excellent. It tasted like it was made of coconut flour, but the servers couldn't tell me for sure. It's made by a store/company called Petunias I think. It's a quiet store connected to an apartment building so a lot of people study/work here. The service is fast and friendly.

Yelp
Nice interior, excellent cappuccinos. The location has a rustic feel with wood counters and old photos. There was a fireplace inside. Plenty of street parking.
google avatar

Ailun H.

Yelp
Ahhh I'm so sad that this Coava location doesn't do pour overs because it's a smaller cafe. I came here with my cousins and they don't really love coffee but glad that there is a big list of teas for them to try. The barista working was super nice and helpful when suggesting which espresso shot to try as that depends on which latte you order. HONEY LATTE (10 OZ.) After getting it with oat milk and an extra shot of espresso, it does get a bit pricy but it's good to treat yourself every so often, I guess. The initial feel sips were perfect but it does get a bit too sweet halfway through. The creaminess of the oat milk complemented the natural sweetness of honey. And the extra espresso shots definitely allowed the coffee flavors and notes to shine (initially, I got it without the extra shots and it was hard to taste much coffee). I guess if you love a strong coffee taste in your latte, I'd recommend paying a bit extra for it. Overall, good espresso! Love that there are two different beans you can choose from (fruity or chocolate). I do wish they did pour overs here though, haha.

Yelp
A well-known coffee roaster in Portland, Coava highlights the coffee scene in PDX. With multiple locations around town, Coava features a variety of roasts layered with tones and notes and hints of all fruits/vegetable/chocolates/nuts/desserts. With every location I've been to, the baristas have all been very knowledgeable on the coffee and are always keen on providing information and details on the coffee served that day. I went with an iced americano with a splash of oatmilk. The coffee was smooth and strong. If you're looking for a solid coffee option that won't disappoint, Coava is the place.
google avatar

Quiana C.

Yelp
Staff is really nice. I've been twice and each time they're all so down to educate you on drinks and beans. One of the best mochas I've had!!!
google avatar

Phil N.

Yelp
Solid coffee shop, friendly and informative staff. I ordered a chai tea and was impressed with the quality of the drink. I don't live or work by any of the better coffee shops, so I'm stuck with Starbucks as my only option most of the time and Coava's chai was so much better. Also ordered a pistachio croissant...it was a bit spendy at around $5.50, but it was pretty tasty as well. Seating area was pretty large with counter top seating, large communal table seating, and some couches. Wifi was speedy and reliable, and place was quiet enough to get some much needed work done.

Yelp
Tuesday a.m. visit. I'm surprised they aren't busier at what was a relative peak type time around 8:00 a.m. Maybe Portlanders are later to the caffeine trough? Many options. Half a dozen or so pastry or sweet type options all of which looked amazing (I didn't try one). There are great light and medium roast beans on offer - quite a variety from all over the globe. The seating is comfortable and arranged for privacy while you enjoy your cup. It was warm enough. 5 stars - helpful motivated staff who seems cheerful and glad to be making delicious strong coffee. Thanks.

Yelp
I love that this shop opens early. I can run in, grab a drink and continue with my morning. I think they're a little slow but they do make a pretty ok coffee. The space is very chill for working, meeting, relaxing. There's a little fireplace which is nice on a rainy or cold day.
google avatar

Hong L.

Yelp
We didn't get to check out as many coffeehouses as we had hoped to, but Coava was far and away the best place that we visited. Coffees were expertly crafted, extracting out the full nuanced flavors of the beans without being overly acidic. Super friendly staff and large space for relaxing are huge pluses as well. Will be back the next time we are in PDX.
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
$4 (+tip) for a tiny and ice-heavy "cold brew" that tastes like acidic hot-brewed coffee on ice. Also, whatever service and lame music. Good job on the weirdly oversized quasi-fancy decor, though? Won't be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Best coffee in Portland. Sure, it's endorsed by Fred Armisen and Seinfeld, but there really is something special about Coava, like every cup of coffee should be like this one. My friend and I came here to start our day and Coava Coffee Roasters really was the best way to start it. The menu is minimal, as the coffee really speaks for itself. No fluff here, as it should be at all coffee shops. Everything is craftily made, including slow drip. I ordered just a black coffee, and I haven't such good coffee in a long time. It was velvet-like, with flavors of caramel and dark chocolate. Mesmerizing. In addition to coffee, the shop has some small savory and sweet pastries. Seating is limited, since the space is on the smaller side, but there is outdoor seating. It's not the largest location, but wherever there's Coava, I'm there.

Yelp
Delicious coffee. Very smooth and delightful. I'd love a cup of this coffee everyday. Beautiful and chill interior. This coffee roaster is quite popular in Portland, so definitely make this a part of your itinerary. Yelp check-in deal: Buy a bag of coffee & get a free cappuccino. Recommendation: Bag of Robinson Figueroa
google avatar

Yelp
We heard this chain serves some of the best coffee in Portland, so we had to try it. Oatmilk hazelnut latte: 0/5 the oatmilk as sour.. I've had many different types of oatmilk but I've never had a sour one... made me think it went bad or something. Would not recommend Mocha latte: 2/5 couldn't taste any of the mocha or coffee; just a brown liquid I know that Cova is a chain, so maybe the one I went to made a mistake. I may consider going to another location in the future, but for now, no. At least the service was nice.

Yelp
Our first stop of the day was coffee at Coava Coffee Roasters. They have multiple locations around the city. We dropped in on a Saturday (around noon) and there was a constant line of people coming in for a drink. The vibes are very chill with a fireplace in the back. A perfect spot to get some work done. The drink menu is small with 10 options. They also had some pastries and coffee beans for sale ($14.00 US to $15.00 US). - Espresso ($3.50 US) - J said his espresso was strong and bitter. - Latte ($4.50 US) - B added soy milk ($0.50 US). She found the latte more milky flavoured than she prefers. It wasn't too thin but she wanted more coffee flavour to come through. I don't drink much coffee but I actually liked it. I see why Coava is so popular in the city. 3.5 stars.
google avatar

Yelp
*You can actually dine indoors at this coffee shop without a vaccination card* that fact alone gives this place a 5 star review for being 10/2/21. Too many places don't allow indoor seating/dining and that's rough when you want a warm place to work. The staff at this location were friendly and knowledgeable and my oatmilk flat white not only looked amazing but tasted great as well. I enjoyed the music playing in the background and there is plenty of seating.
google avatar

Yelp
Kids woke up at 6:30am so this momma needed some caffeine stat. Thankfully, Coava was only 10mins walk from our place and opened at 6am! My son and I took a nice stroll there and ordered a hot chocolate for him and vanilla latte for me. Both were delicious and the coffee was strong, though I kind of wish they had bigger sizes (I really needed the caffeine!). I understand the rationale behind not offering sizes bigger than 12oz though. The cafe was warm and inviting (with a fireplace and couch area!). My son and I had a great time there.
google avatar

Susan L.

Yelp
Decided to come in for a quick coffee. What I ate/drank: - Cappuccino tasting: My friend and I both ordered a cappuccino and the barista decided she'd give us a tasting by using the two different coffees they had brewing that day. Totally unexpected, but it was fun to taste how different two cappuccinos could be - Fig scone: not too bad, good with the coffee Pros: - Really cute shop - Coffee was delicious - Modern space Cons: - On the pricier side - Not much of a selection in terms of things to eat, there was a plate of things, but nothing was labeled or priced Would I come again? Probably not since I'm not a local.

Yelp
consistent tasty coffee beans! my boyfriend always gets drip coffee while i go for a vanilla oat cappuccino and we are both always happy with our drinks! truly delicious vanilla syrup and great oat milk! friendly staff and pretty shop with water cups available :)
google avatar

Yelp
The perfect spot if you care about the origin of your beans, how they're roasted/processed, and notes of tasting. Very helpful and friendly guy working at the counter. Tasty espresso!!
google avatar

Kadin H.

Yelp
A coffee drinkers cafe! Coava consistently brews amazing coffee with depth of flavour you would never find at a chain. The best part is that they offer multiple choices of espresso. And the matcha latte tastes of actual matcha- unlike those artificially sweetened lattes. Friendly and quick service gets bonus points!
google avatar

Lindsey P.

Yelp
love the honey latte! very subtle and light, not overwhelmingly sweet at all which is great. their coffee smells really good too!
google avatar

Doyle H.

Yelp
A very hip coffee shop in the bottom level of what seems to be an apartment. The decor is very minimal and there's an emphasis on the wooden furniture - extremely hip! To the right of the door, the coffee bar awaits with a small and concise menu. The coffees that they were serving were displayed on an interesting looking rack and it contributed to the vibe. Caffe Latte (5/5) - Seriously one of the best caffe latte's I've ever had. The latte was so smooth (Porfirio Castellanos I believe) and silky and I was amazed about how good it was. I prefer my lattes a little bit milkier and I enjoyed how the sweetness from the milk balanced out the espresso completely. The baristas were amazing and were super chill. Would totally come back 5/5, please come support this place!!
google avatar

J J.

Yelp
Barista handed this to me and said "today is all about embracing." Coffee, it's a heart and a flower. Music is good, the baristas are feeling my mood, and the fire is warm. This is a good place to get your caffeine.
google avatar

Klaus O.

Yelp
I am a Mocha fan and this place delivered the best Mocha I had in Portland. I ordered a decaf Mocha with almond milk and it was amazing. If you have not been to this place, stop by and you won't be disappointed.

Evan O.

Yelp
Best cappuccino I've had in the states. Excellent espresso, perfectly creamy foam. People working there were really kind and helpful. The pastries were very good. Nice space all around.
google avatar

Julia D.

Yelp
Finally was able to get to an actual Coava location. They're my favorite roaster in Portland that I've yet found. Every variety of coffee I've tried is amazing and I'm constantly disappointed I can't drink more of it because caffeine makes me cuckoo, but believe me...I WOULD. The line system at this location is wildly confusing. No one knows where to stand to order or where to stand and wait, but I guess that's a good tactic on their part because it gets people talking! Or I guess awkwardly trying to avoid one another. They keep the creamers behind the counter in the fridge if you want it!
google avatar

Jerry M.

Yelp
Did some searching on Yelp for good coffee places and discovered Coava Coffee. This led me to check out Coava's website and found out that they're a local roaster and what types of beans they use. I went to their own coffeehouse on SE Hawthorne to make sure I'm getting the right stuff. It's located on the first floor of an apartment building, and has enough seating to enjoy your drink inside. There are a couple of tables outside on the sidewalk too. I thought it was interesting that they display detailed descriptions of what beans were currently being used in their espresso machine. The barista explained to me that they usually have two different varieties to choose from for espresso. They also have two different varieties for fresh brewed coffee as well. I got my usual favorite espresso drink, an Americano...without sweetener or milk. I like espresso black because I want to be able to taste the coffee itself. Good thing too, because this Coava coffee was exceptional...very SMOOTH. So, this is a nice place with really great coffee, BUT it can be really hard to find a place to park on Hawthorne Blvd. However, Coava is so good that, for me, it's worth the effort.

Yelp
ugh.... I miss old Portland... Where have you gone old friend? You are now a melting pot of all the personalities we dreaded and were thankful that we didn't have to deal with... but sadly... they have arrived... and probably here to stay. Goodbye Old friend. You will forever be missed. :-( I've been to this coffee joint twice now and both times were disappointments. The coffee was fine, WAY overpriced, but enjoyable. It's the customer service I have a problem with. What is up with a huge portion of younger folks not getting the concept of customer service?!?!? I am a nice guy to service folks, always have been and always will be. Sadly, this level of respect is not returned as much as it should be. I don't even know why I tip anymore! The girl that made my coffee was cold and void of friendliness. Maybe she was having a bad day and I happen to bump into her life a second time on another one of her bad days, who knows. If that is the case, you should park it at the door before you are about to serve the public and expect them to come back for more coffee with a smile. The guy who came in AFTER me was a regular and she asked (in such a friendly way as a matter of fact) if he wanted the usual to which he replied, yes. Guess who got their coffee first? Not Me! But she did say mine was almost done, as she was just beginning to make it! HA! Anyhow, the place is cool inside, it's the typical "implant" view of what Portland business interior should look like. Woody and bare. The pastry was good. If customer service was better I would give 3 stars because the prices are STUPID high.
google avatar

Nina N.

Yelp
Honey latte is great. But my friends latte was on the milky side. My other friend got a fresh pot and seared his tongue on how burning hot it was. The building was warm and stuffy. And the overall experience was average.
google avatar

Melissa R.

Yelp
Love this place, the Oat milk is made in house and the people are super nice and friendly.
google avatar

Juliana P.

Yelp
A local recommended this coffee shop to me, so my babycakes and I dropped in for a caffeinated chill time. The barista definitely knew his stuff, but explained in a way that made me feel a bit like a coffee noob. I mean, I guess I am, so it was fine. We got the honey latte and the drip. I forgot which one, but it was pretty decent. The honey latte was interesting but way too sweet for what it is trying to be. I would not recommend. The overall vibe and design of the space is really nice. There is a gas fireplace in the back that made it really hard for us to get back up. I'd def recommend if you are in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
Carried on the cool breeze of popular SE Hawthorne is the seductive hint of fresh-roasted coffee brewed by Coava's cool coffee craftsmen. The baristas seem to share equal affection for customers as they do for coffee. The cosy chill cafe is a lovely match for the coffee and the artisans behind the counter because Coava is for coffee lovers and lovers of cool coffee culture. Mmmm, I'm a Coava lover lovah ... Call me Mr. Coffeetastic, Boombastic caffeine addict Honey Latte, smooth like silk Craft coffee, splash of milk Oh me oh my, well well Can't you tell Cool dudes, chill vibe Join the Cappuccino tribe Coava Lover Lover, Mmm, Coava Lover lovah!

Yelp
Coffee is strong and good I would definitely recommend it. I was going to buy a bag of coffee to take home but then I realized it was $17 . I hope the lower their prices.

Yelp
GOOD BRAND ! My wife and I were walking along Hawthorne Blvd from our airbnb in Buckman to check out the stores and look at lunch options. We stuck our heads in here for a gander about 11.30pm and it looked lovely......specially with the fireplace glowing on a cold rainy day. We have tried Coava coffee at their new location in downtown San Diego, CA. The coffee was quite good but they were a bit light on in the food dept. This location had no food whatsoever that we could see so it was off our lunch spot list.

David S.

Yelp
Hello everyone. This place surpassed *almost* all of my expectations. I tried this place out like everyone else: it was on the Fred Armisen episode of the legendary Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. I expected the wait to be long because that was what happened in the show, but I received my coffee and cruffin (croissant muffin) within a minute or two. Holy lord it tasted good. It had an explosively orgasmic berry filling. I tried the cold brew and they gave me custom pours of syrup and creamer, which I've never experienced before. Hence, my coffee turned out fantastic, mostly because they let me control that process. I clearly have good taste. The atmosphere was fantastic; very warm and comforting, BUT they were playing a whole Olivia Rodrigo album while I was sat down. She is way too popular to be played at a Portland cafe. I need to be hearing free form jazz or some shit, not an 18 year old girl crying about how things are "brutal out here." That is why I'm giving this place 4 stars.
google avatar

Matt E.

Yelp
The "secret" Coava with the much shorter lines. It's also much cozier of a place to hang out. Really, most everything about this location is superior to their OG shop. It's definitely worth a visit and I'm jealous of the people who live in the apartments above. The cost still seems to be on the higher end of the spectrum for fancy coffees. But what can you do?

Carrie Z.

Yelp
We enjoy Coava coffee. Staff at this location was very helpful when I stopped in for a couple of bags of beans. Also appreciated that the staff here were masked.
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
I walked into Coava on a very sunny day and was happy to be greeted by lots of natural lights and a long pathos plant growing behind the espresso bar. I ordered an iced americano and the barista chose an espresso that is light and refreshing without being super acidic or floral- my favorite kind of espresso. The space is open and airy with a lot of wood and concrete. A large party could easily be accommodated and sit by the hooded fireplace during cold months. I would send my best friends to drink coffee here, so you should too.
google avatar

Yelp
This amazing cafe is the peak of our Portland stroll. Very knowledgeable and pleasant young guy behind the counter; explaining all things we needed to know. From our entrance into the bistro, the entire layout was very welcoming. The interior architecture and design was well thought and planned. It's simple, holistic interiors, utilizing elements of lighting, color, material for furniture and coffee evoke all that a genuine coffee house should be or hope to attain to be. The actual coffee was smooth flavored from wonderfully roasted beans. Our family each has made very different choices in the type of coffee-based beverages from the bistros selection. Each was outstanding and delicious in their own way. Our overall experience and visit was excellent in every way.

Yelp
Best coffee in Portland hands down. Simple selection of local Little T pastries, coffee and tea. Their almond milk lattes are amazing.
