Seattle’s New Restaurant Openings - Seattle - The Infatuation

"By day, Cocoa Legato is a cafe serving hot chocolate with snacks like granola bowls, salads, and grilled cheese (all the food has chocolate touches, too). By night, it transforms into a music hub with live shows, album releases, and listening parties." - kayla sager riley, gabe guarente, aimee rizzo

I’ll be back, everything about this place I like from the food to the decor. Most of all I love that the chocolate beans are sourced directly from farmers in Peru and Columbia. Most chocolate is grown in Africa and so many people who grow it never see the profits or even a living wage. It feels good to buy Cocoa grown in the americas which is its origin and a brand that promotes human dignity. The owner introduced themselves and let me know there will be tours starting soon! (6yrs and up) All gender bathrooms

It’s one of the most pleasant environments I’ve seen in a while. The food was great and the music was live. Being there at the grand opening and seeing everyone in the community join. It was great! The chocolate grilled cheese was superb as well as the muffin. And the salad had candied cocoa nibs that were a very fun and tasty crunch to tie in the cocoa. Will be going there again!

They make the chocolate right here! We love this place! Not only can you watch them craft the chocolate, they also have a cafe next door, where you can get great Caffe Vita coffee and yummy food. We tried the grilled cheese, chocolate sandwich, and espresso chocolate mousse, along with coffee and sipping chocolate. All were excellent! The staff are also super nice and helpful! Highly recommend!

Absolutely love cocoa legato. The mocha might be the best I've ever had in my life. Staff are incredibly nice - like some of the nicest I've seen in Seattle, and very knowledgeable too. I think many of the staff come from Theo's chocolate. Great ambiance, the chocolate is delicious, the cookies are fantastic, and as I mentioned the drinks are made perfectly. Hope to try some of their food sometime soon and visit for some music at night.

We got an avocado toast, a mocha, a salad, and a hot chocolate. The drinks were rich and delicious, and the food tasted amazing! This place has a really cool atmosphere with windows to view their chocolate-making facility and a wall of free chocolate samples. The staff were friendly, and our food came out relatively quickly. Overall, I would highly recommend this place, and we’ll probably returning.

This is such a cool, unique, neighborhood space. So glad to have a small music venue within walking distance. The way that they incorporate the in-house made chocolate into all of the food they serve just adds to the uniqueness and culture that Cocoa Legato has brought to Greenwood.

I love it! The vibe is great and welcoming. We got the cookie and chocolate grilled cheese and both were AMAZING! The chocolate samples were all yummy, and I will definitely be going back! I’d love to go when there is live music.

Yelp
Freshly ground coffee beans + freshly ground 70% cacao chocolate beans. OMG, I just had the best mocha I have had in my whole life!

Yelp
Frequently driving through Greenwood, I had been watching the progress of Cocoa Legato's unveiling and wondered what Aaron Lindstrom, formerly associated with departed Theo Chocolate, would create with that location. Despite recently opening on 4/26/25, this has been a well conceived, work in progress for nearly two years. I had the opportunity to stop by on a drizzly Saturday afternoon (5/31/25). I am really into bean to bar chocolate spots (post pastry school), indie coffee roasters and cafes (yay Caffe Vita!), indie music shops & venues, and multi purpose community destinations. Talk about a major convergence in Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood! Great addition to Greenwood's diverse retail businesses, cafes, bakeshops, pubs, cocktail spots, theater, and restaurants. Plus all the cross pollination with local businesses such as Caffe Vita, Tall Grass Bakery, Beecher's Cheese and showcasing local music talent. Super friendly owner and staff at Cocoa Legato. Good to see diverse customers onsite, generating curious glances from passersby and folks waiting at the Metro bus stop out front. Very approachable and welcoming to families, especially with enthusiastic little ones. Of course, there are beverages. Baked goods are vegan (muffin, scone, pair of cookies). There's also bites consisting of a salad, chocolate (!) grilled cheese, avocado toast with cocoa nib infused balsamic drizzle, and chocolate mousse. Other merch features their five handmade bean to bar chocolates, vinyl titles, clothing, and Caffe Vita branded items. I savored a 12oz mocha and took in the onsite vibe. All I can say from the get go, a lot of thought was given to the collective layout of Cocoa Legato: the production area, the cafe space, the front counter and pastry case, available merch, the performing stage, and overall interior design. Truly I was very impressed by the 12oz mocha. That balance of chocolate, espresso shots, and steamed milk. Flavor and temperature. It was so impressive, I had to let that specific barista know. I look forward to trying the Espresso Bar with 70% Colombian cacao, their collaboration with Caffe Vita, "Chocolate With A Groove" that I purchased before leaving. With future onsite visits, definitely I'd like to try the drinking & sipping chocolates, chocolate mousse, and the chocolate grilled cheese. As always, supporting local, indie businesses. Love that Cocoa Legato has such a unique niche!

Yelp
How I heard of this place: The long-anticipated opening of Cocoa Legato is how I heard of this chocolate haven in the heart of Greenwood. Friends chatted about it, the building's facade had a remodel, the signage and cleanliness of the outside corner and soon, the wafting smell of house-made chocolate: from bean to bar. Type of cuisine: All things dark chocolate. Made in house, literally from bean to roast to cocoa nib to smooth, creamy chocolate to bars. Straight from Colombia and the ranks of the immortalized Theo in Fremont, the staff has been working together for years, building trust, camaraderie and true friendship, giving Cocoa Legato a family first feel. Among their in-house pastries and creations is their famous chocolate grilled cheese, cocoa nib sprinkled avocado toast, drinking chocolate, chocolate chip cookies and novel-named muffins, scones, s'mores and more. Everything is curated. Everything is exquisite. Ambiance: From the wafting smells of chocolate that vent out onto the street, your nose leads the way to the warm, dark interior, where the Seattle hip hop scene and local, unsigned musicians are promoted through chocolate-music pairings, a small stage with couch and coffee table for live performances (Friday evenings), and an extensive bar/counter for the tasty treats. Servers are friendly and helpful with any questions newcomers may have. Every menu item is made to order, so takes time, which allows you to savor each sip of your beverage as you await your sandwiches, etc. Samples of their bars - currently: 80% dark chocolate, 70% sea salt dark chocolate, 70% espresso chocolate - can be found just inside the doors. As well as large windows to see the chocolatiers in action - both from outside on the sidewalk, and inside from the cafe. Music, as one can imagine is always fresh, fun and thoughtfully chosen. What I ordered: Having been several times in the ten weeks since they opened, I have sampled their mocha, drinking chocolate, chocolate chip, Sconie Mitchell, pride s'more, avocado toast and chocolate grilled cheese. What I loved: Their chocolate chip cookie is among the best I've had outside of homemade (maybe even including) in the city. The avocado toast is fresh and beautiful, their grilled cheese with dark chocolate intriguing and pungent and glorious. Why I loved it: Everything is so well curated and thoughtful. From the names of their pastries and treats, to the handcrafted beverages and music-chocolate bar pairings (new ones coming out soon!) has been carefully prepared by Aaron and his staff. Cost: Average to high

Yelp
Please support this new local business because this place is all about community. The owner learned the chocolate making craft from Tcho and Theo which explains why the chocolate is legit. He built this business to support the arts and the community. Not only do you get delicious chocolate dishes, but you get to listen to live music from a local artist AND some of those artists are featured on the chocolate bars. They do tours on the weekend to encourage people to understand the process from bean to bar. Check it out!

Yelp
I got to try their smooth delicious cocoa and chocolate grilled cheese sandwich. I know it seems odd to put chocolate and cheese together but oh my goodness it works! The bread is chewy and crispy and the chocolatey cheese is fantastic. I wish I had red wine pair it with. The atmosphere is chill and the live entertainment added to the ambiance. They even offer tours of their chocolate making process. I would definitely come back again and try out new offerings on their menu!

Yelp
Cocoa Legato is a chocolate workshop and cafe by day and a music venue by night. In addition to the different in-house chocolates you can try and drink, they also have pastries and small bites including grilled cheese with chocolate. It's my favorite chocolate shop in Seattle and a must-visit small business in the heart of Greenwood!

Yelp
I got to check out Cocoa Legato for a Yelp event. What a pleasant surprise! I loved that this had classic open mic coffeehouse vibes but with a chocolatey twist! The space felt classic in a way I don't see too often anymore as coffee shops modernize, like a bit eclectic but also some flashy bits of style here and there. It was really cool that they had a musician, who was excellent btw, and that they incorporate music into the identity of the shop. They offered sipping chocolate and samples of the chocolate grilled cheese. For one, I've never been one to just sip on a sipping chocolate, but this stuff was great. We received a couple of small samples of chocolate bars at the end of the night as well, and there is a really delectable signature taste here! Chocolate grilled cheese doesn't seem like it should work, but I already want more! I found myself very eager to come back here and I think it's a great place to bring friends for something that's both common and different!

Yelp
4/27/25 This morning we went to Aaron Lindstrom's new "Cocoa Legato" coffee-chocolate-music shop that just opened yesterday! We were greeted by Andrew, one of the chocolatiers who helped us choose a scone then later a banana muffin. Had an excellent decaf latte w/oat milk made by barista Pierce. Their freshly made in the morning scones were really good with a nice scone texture inside and a little crispy bite on the outside. The banana muffin was great, good flavor and texture. There is also a display of chocolate bars which includes little taster bits you can sample. We liked the Columbia bar and bought two of those. And, they were very informative when we asked about their chocolate making which you can see through the glass wall from the café. Very cool! I highly recommend you at least drop by to try something and see for yourself. It is worth the trip.
