The Best Restaurants in San Marcos | Eater Austin

"This swanky restaurant serves its own spin on various cuisines, ranging from Japanese shokupan to bacon-wrapped poblano, all from a nondescript building off I-35, but don’t be fooled by the storefront. The jazzy interior sets an elegant tone for upscale fare like beef Wellington, Alaskan halibut, and kabocha squash risotto. No matter what you order, Cody’s artfully plates each dish, which complements the sleek leather seating and contrasts with the exposed industrial ceiling." - Kimberly Olivas

Google
We had a wonderful experience at Cody's, I had the blue cheese salad wedge and the Beef Wellington. The salad was perfect for a blue cheese lover, and I've always wanted to try the Beef Wellington, which delivered superb flavor and texture. The chocolate cake was very light!

Our first time here on our vacation. Everything is awesome. Atmosphere, food, drinks, service all very good. The beef Wellington is top notch. The old fashioned was STRONG. Very pleasant experience.

Cody's just blows my mind every time we go. Beef Wellington, Halibut with lime risotto, Casio e Pepe with Shrimp. Japanese Milk Bread with garlic butter. Creme brulee! And an amazing wine/cocktail menu too! Never disappointed. Bring friends, family and business associates. This is one local spot we need to keep in business!

We had our son’s and daughter in law’s rehearsal dinner on the patio over the weekend. The owner, John, was great to work with. The wait staff took amazing care of all of our guests. Every need was met and the food was great! Thank you for taking such great care for our family’s special event.

We had lunch at Cody’s this afternoon and everything was absolutely delicious—from the customer service to the food! We’ll definitely be coming back!

We were looking for a place to eat that was different from what we could get in our home town of Houston. We found Cody’s due to reviews. This place doesn’t disappoint! The interior is intimate with low lighting. Each table has a real flame candle. Classy. It’s the perfect place for sharing a bottle of wine and having a quiet meal. The walls are lined with murals of famous musicians. Our server was great. She provided input on their best dishes. I wish I remembered her name. 7/3/2024 at 9:05 PM. She has long hair and is very friendly. She did a great job. We started with the wedge salad. It’s large enough to split. The bacon was so good. Very crisp and flavorful. I had the lobster ravioli for my meal. It was delicious! The sauces drizzled on the ravioli tasted like a butternut squash base. You may not think those items would pair well, but it was perfect. The dish looks small, but it was filling. The gentleman had the pork chop. It is a bone-in chop on a bed of mash potatoes. The portion is large. I am not a pork chop person, but I was very impressed. The bacon jam was great, potatoes were creamy, and the chop itself was very tender. I highly recommend both of these. I included a picture of the menu. We only found the lunch menu on Google. You need to do dinner here! Cody’s has been open for 12 years. They will be around for a long time, I’m sure. Very, very pleased with our experience.

Google
Sharing the block with two Marriott hotels, Cody's stands out in a crowded restaurant scene of chains such as Cracker Barrel, Shake Shake and I'm sure there's a Taco Bell nearby. This is exactly the type of place I look for - unique, quality, character. Japanese Milk Bread is a "must try". Jonsie was an amazing bartender and server.

I recently visited Cody's Restaurant in San Marcos, TX, for the first time and had an excellent experience. The service was phenomenal, and sitting at the bar, I enjoyed a perfectly cooked burger that truly exceeded my expectations with its finesse. The decor is great, adding to the overall ambiance, and the staff were consistently attentive and friendly. Highly recommended for a quality dining experience.

Yelp
I have had 11/10 experiences here lately. Service is always beautiful. I love a theme so the jazz and low lighting goes a long way. Food rotates on the menu so I was sad to see the Arancini go but I am obsessed with this corn bisque it's so well flavored and light but also so rich and filling. Alongside a spritz I was pleasantly surprised. We had the mashed potatoes and steak with the scallops entree and it was SOOOO yummy. Changed my life and upped my serotonin for 3 weeks

Yelp
Fantastic find! Lovely vibe, great service! That dirty Diana cocktail was one of the best I've ever had! Nice twist! The tuna tartare was unique and perfectly balanced. Scallops out of this world. Everyone in our party enjoyed every plate!

Yelp
We were on our Anniversary and I decided to try this place out since it had good reviews. The place is easy to find and parking is good since it's in a shopping center. We loved the ambiance since it had a nice romantic bar vibe, and the service was great! Our server helped us with the menu, and we ordered our drinks and appetizer, which was the Milk Bread and the Bacon Wrapped Poblano. For our main course we ordered the Beef Wellington and also the special, which was the Lobster Ravioli. Everything tasted great and the service was good. The business also offered military discount which was a plus.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. The cheesecake was out of this world. The perfect end to a day of outlet mall shopping.

Yelp
We came here to meet in between San Antonio and Austin for my brother and i's joint birthday. And honestly? We were wow'd. It was a quiet Wednesday evening on the 3rd, so we were seated immediately. Our server Tanya explained the menu and made great drink recommendations. Several members of my family ordered the scallops, my husband ordered the pork chop, my SIL ordered a steak, and I ordered beef Wellington. Everything was cooked so incredibly. My beef Wellington was flavorful and tender, the scallops were to die for.

Yelp
I've been to Cody's twice in the past couple of months. The cocktails are amazing! We enjoyed a couple of appetizers. The bar is a fun place to sit and people watch. I love this place!
google avatar

Yelp
We ordered the steak burger, tuna, dish, and the ribeye. The drinks were very good. Especially the whiskey sour. The brussel sprouts were amazing! Not in pictures.

Yelp
Absolute go to whenever I am in Austin/San Marcos/New Braunfels, in fact I will go well out of my way to enjoy Cody's. I met Cody several years ago and have been coming back several times a year from our home near Dallas. The food, beverages and service is stellar. The menu changes from time to time with new and delicious additions every time! We make it a point to come for birthdays and anniversaries and we are never disappointed. Cody goes out of his way to welcome us, and everyone for that matter. The staff is very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. The food is amazing! Tonight was a date night and we had the Bluefin Brie, awesome, and the Gyulais Striploin, unbelievable! We missed Cody tonight, it is his birthday today, Happy Birthday Cody, thanks for a great restaurant.

Yelp
My friend and I enjoyed our lunch here where we received amazing service with delicious food. They have a great back patio and all of the staff were kind and extremely pleasant. I highly recommend to stop in even for a drink as they also have a great bar area.

Yelp
Expensive but delicious. We truly enjoyed the food and service there. Ordered pork chop, lobster tacos and burger. Everything came out wonderful. Pork chop was especially delicious. It was tender and had a very unique flavor, we loved the music there too. I was very impressed by the artworks various old time blues and jazz Musicians. Highly recommend and we Will definitely come back again.

Yelp
We absolutely loved our experience here. Came for a weekend Valentines day dinner and enjoyed items from their seasonal menu and valentines menu. Staff was nice, seated us quickly. Although we were at the bar, it didn't seem to close or over crowded. Server was attentive to our needs, however left us alone to enjoy our meal and each-others company. Steak was cooked medium rare and melted in your mouth. The scallops were perfect - not rubbery or fishy. But the star of the show was the Bluefin Tuna. Was absolute perfection. Would absolutely go again and Highly recommend!

Yelp
I went here for my birthday in San Marcos a couple of days ago...but we've been to both locations & it's always good. I love to sit on the patio in either location. I had the Alaskan halibut & it was amazing. We also love the Milkbread when we go to New Braunfels. I have had the salmon & the heirloom tomato salad. All are fantastic. The service is always good. It's definitely a special occasion kind of spot.

Yelp
This was my first time here and, needless to say, it didn't disappoint. The food here, from our appetizers to our main courses was all around amazing. I highly recommend the braised gyulais short rib over potato purée. The chocolate cake with brandy and caramel sauce was delicious. We definitely will be back.

Yelp
We walked in at lunchtime and every table was full so we sat at the bar. Cool interior and it wasn't too loud. Roper was prompt with taking our order. It was quite a while (25 min?) until our salads came out and they were both room temp and not cold. I had the Caesar salad which was nicely dressed with Parmesan, with a too strong anchovy taste (and I did not order the actual anchovies for $4.) For $14 I thought the salad portion was small. My friend's blue iceberg wedge salad was served with a wedge of blue cheese but she thought there should be more blue cheese in the dressing and the portion was small. We also had the Japanese milk bread served with butter and salt which was tasty as a soft white bread. I watched another customer at the bar ask a server if she could ring him up and she said "No, not me." She did not tell the bartender of the customer's request and he had to ask again a few minutes later. I really wanted to like this place but the slow service and mediocre food didn't do it for me.

Yelp
We arrived early and I informed the hostess that we had a reservation. She advised that was no problem but never asked me my name. She went to seat us at a table when I let her know that I had requested a specific table and that's when she realized it (It was also the only table in the restaurant with a reserved sign) Our server (Mike/Mikey) did a good job. It was nothing spectacular but also no complaints. We ordered a Martini and a Cosmo and both drinks were solid. We moved on to wine and ordered our food. A Ribeye and the Scallops. The Ribeye was perfectly cooked as were the scallops. The candied pork belly was a lot drier than usual but still good (Usually it is great) For dessert we shared a Scotch and the chocolate cake. That was the one disappointment of the night. Cody's is our favorite restaurant, and we love the consistency in quality of the food.

Yelp
Great cocktails and delicious food. Atmosphere is relaxed and quaint. Recommend as a date night restaurant. Would highly recommend this restaurant. Surprisingly located in a shopping area with quaint shops. Loved their Old Fashion cocktail.

Yelp
This place is so good! Definitely recommend. My boyfriend and I went for the first time for my birthday dinner. I had a beef Wellington and lobster macaroni and cheese. The food was cooked perfectly and the service was great. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Y'all I was so surprised to find the quality of ingredients and marrying of flavors in San Marcos. Located near the Outlet mall, the location is unassuming but the food rivals anything I've had. We enjoyed the Brussel sprouts with bacon, grapes, and feta---so good!! Next I had the pork chop and mashed potatoes. Perfectly cooked thick chop and creamy whipped potatoes. My husband has the short rib sandwich. Full of robust flavors and crispy bread. --our server Alec was Excellent!
google avatar

Janet R.

Yelp
First time at Cody's this week and had to try their half price Angus burger. Just $10 (normally $20) but only comes with fries for a side. I requested Brussels sprouts and was delighted with this side (although it was a $3.00 up charge). Hamburger was excellent. I throughly enjoyed my meal, the service we had was excellent but the restaurant is a bit loud and hard to carry on a conversation. Would certainly recommend it and I will return.
google avatar

Yelp
They make an excellent dirty martini. The food was good as well. The asparagus is exceptional if you want to add a side.

Yelp
Myself and 3 others walked into Cody's on a Saturday evening around 9 pm and were seated immediately. The food, service, and ambiance were all really good. We never had milk bread and it was very tasty. Actually everything we ordered was good. At our table we had crab cakes, beef short ribs, pork chops, scallops, grilled shrimp (add on), lobster tacos, and Caesar salad. Lots of the reviews said the Caesar salad was really good, it was nothing out of the ordinary but I did like that it had an artichoke in it. The scallops had some pork belly in it and it was phenomenal! Everything was so good and next time I am in town I plan to return.

Yelp
I ate here yesterday with a group of about 35 people. 1st time and talk about impressed. An assortment of appetizers were ordered but I saw the Poblano Peppers stuffed with chorizo and cream cheese, wrapped in bacon and cooked to pure perfection. Absolutely delicious! A must try. They were so good It was all I could think about today. Beef Wellington was on the menu but I decided to have the Pork Chop. Cooked to perfection! ( you'll see this word throughout this review) The purée mashed potato were scrumptious. I knew I had to come back for dinner today. Tonight we had the Poblano Peppers and true to form they were sooooo dang good. After last nights rave reviews I knew I had to try the Beef Wellington. Mouth watering deliciousness! I also had a couple scallops and like everything they were seared and cooked perfectly. Service is impeccable and the Chef deserves a huge pat on the culinary back. If you're in San Marcos....it's a must try. Thank me later!

Yelp
Food, Service, Ambiance all 5 stars without a doubt. Don't let sticker-shock get the best of you. It's price accurately reflects the full range of flavors they offer with every plate and every drink. This will probably be our new happy hour spot since we try to stick in our budget. My sangria was so good and I didn't even need a second. We had the bruschetta-inspired appetizer and the dip was so creamy and bread perfectly toasted. My partner got a pork chop over mashed potatoes and gravy... exquisite! The gravy and bacon jam complemented the pork well and it all just melted in each bite. Since I don't eat seafood, my only options were red meat and the pork chop. I opted for the hamburger, and it was probably one of the best ones I have ever had. I upgraded the fries to the Parmesan fries and got a side of broccolini (which was so tasty I might go back and just order all the veggies). The entire meal was delightful and our waitress helped us curate the meal with recommendations and suggestions. My favorite part of the restaurant was that the environment radiated with Black-Class! We enjoyed finding our favorite black artists and albums on the walls Such a beautiful restaurant and atmosphere, we will be back!

Guillermo S.

Yelp
I was not impressed at all with their reservations ! but anyway I thought perhaps the restaurant it's worthy, the Beef was fine dessert crème brulle was better but the service was definitely not up that I was expecting for a single dinner over a $100 bucks !
google avatar

Yelp
Someone in town recommended this restaurant and then we heard that they would be taking over our favorite restaurant in New Braunfels, so we had to stop by and try it. The atmosphere is nice and quiet with dim lighting. I was worried that this would be more of a fancy dress restaurant but you should be ok wearing everyday casual dress. We sat at the bar and we met the owner, Cody, there. He was chatting with the staff and some of the customers too. - Crab and Chorizo Aranchini: these were very good! I really enjoyed the freshness that the basil added to the salty arancini. - Yellowfin Tuna Tataki: The fish was very fresh and tender! Cody mentioned that he sources his seafood from a supplier in Houston that supplies Austin and San Antonio. I enjoyed the Sambal Chili Sauce with the tuna. - Filet: Cooked medium - my boyfriend got this and I had a few bites and it was a great steak. He said it was the best steak he had in a while. The drinks at the bar are great! This is a quality local restaurant, a bit on the higher end. I think it would be a great special occasion restaurant.

Yelp
I haven't been to Cody's in a few years but went back recently to have dinner with family and it was still as excellent as I remember. Tucked away right off I-35 in a little shopping center, this place really is quite the hidden gem. From their cocktails, to wine list to inventive food menu, Cody's knows what they are doing. The perfect pairings of light and savory dishes with seasonal drinks, I loved everything. The service was a little slow to start but understandable with being so busy. We always sit in the outdoor patio but need to return and sit inside one of these days. The patio is very nice though considering it's the back of the building. They have a nice peaceful set up. Will definitely come back again when we are in the area.
google avatar

Ben M.

Yelp
I have actually been here several times over the past several years and have mostly enjoyed it. Just seems like the hike in prices has resulted in lower quality in food. I had a Caesar salad the other day with anchovies which I love - the strong salty taste. But for $4 extra I had two small ones on the side which were mush and tasteless. Was extremely disappointed. My lobster tacos were 7 out of 10. But servings have gotten smaller. It's just too high end for San Marcos and quality needs to improve. Recommend if you do go , go during happy hour to get a discount on your drinks and a good burger .
google avatar

Cyndi J.

Yelp
We've been to Cody's several times now and this review is past due. My dinner last night was one of the best meals I've had in months. The duck was roasted beautifully and the mole was fabulous, paired with a flavorful risotto. The serving size was large for the price point. I also loved the margaritas -try the house version. Given the absurd prices in Wimberley, Cody's is more than worth the drive and is a much better value!
google avatar

Yelp
Wow... this is a classy spot in an odd location. Deserves kudos for the staff and proper mixologist. Steaks were as good as you get and the brussel sprouts amazing. Gott give this a shot and a great date spot.

Lia D. G.

Yelp
Gave this place a shot for their lunch menu after shopping at the outlets. It was great! A very cool spot that is casual yet elegant at the same time. We tried a couple of the appetizers and they did not disappoint. The pork chop was probably the best meal we had but the redfish was still off the charts. The service was fast and servers knowledgeable! Overall, I'd definitely give this place five stars and plan to return for the dinner menu!

I wish I could rate this place more than 5 stars but YELP doesn't let me! The food.....amazing! The service.....amazing! The atmosphere.....amazing! If you would like an upscale experience o would recommend coming here! The Beef Wellington is my favorite! I feel like it is comparable to Gordon Ramsey's Hells Kitchen Beef Wellington that I love so much! Shout out to our server! He was amazing!

Yelp
The service was great. They were very fast to accommodate. Be prepared to reach into your pocket. The food is very good.

Yelp
Love everything about this place! Great place for a date night or drinks with friends and family! The service is always nice and friendly.

Yelp
We pick here to eat because we get in late and hungry. They stay open late. My husband ordered the Fried Grouper Basket, and he really enjoyed it. I ordered the Blackened Snapper and it was delicious. Food it always hot. You order at the counter and food is brought to your table. Service is always good and fast.

Yelp
First time here. Food was perfectly cooked, had the duck and husband had the wagyu steak. Mexican martini was on point

Yelp
Great date night spot in smtx :) so close to a 5 star review for me- awesome service, yummy cocktail, delicious burger and champagne salad...the only thing that was off was the butternut squash risotto- it was suuuper salty:/ Definitely some surprisingly high prices, but worth it for some great food!

Yelp
Second time eating at this cute, elegant, restaurant. The food is delicious. Consistently delicious from the appetizer all the way to dessert. Customer service is wonderful and the ambiance is cozy and elegant. I moved to New Braunfels 3 years ago and I am happy that I found a nice restaurant with delicious food just down the street, in San Marcos!

Mitchell O.

Yelp
This food is legit a 10/10, so freaking good and unique. I got short rib and easily best meal I've had in a month. It's not cheap. Only negative I'll say. Menu is insane, so many really cool and good options. Atmosphere nice. Service was very good. Food really good, lots of selections I would be willing to try at least 10+ items as a main which is rare for a restaurant. Definitely a high quality place that I'd want to go to again and I'm pretty picky lol. Overall very happy I went and would 100% recommend
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
Had a relaxing evening at Cody's tonight. Great staff, very chill. Let me just sit at the bar and chill but were just the right amount of attentive. I had the filet mignon tartare as well as the tuna tartare. Both were very fresh, completely flavorful. I liked the filet mignon tartare better but would recommend either. Will definitely go back another time to try their entrees!
google avatar

Yelp
Service is very good. Ambiance is excellent Food - not many options and over priced. The food is about a B-.

Yelp
Cody's Restaurant Bar & Patio was a wonderful little surprise just across the frontage road from the San Marcos Outlets. Our group met for dinner and they gladly welcomed our four legged companion. Our group was seated in the patio area, which was perfectly heated for a December dinner. They have some pretty yummy Happy Hour specials, including a margarita and a cosmo! Our group ordered the pork chop, the burger, the short rib, and the flat iron steak. ALL were AMAZING! We also ordered the Brussel sprouts and asparagus (not pictured), which were delicious as well. To top off the evening, dessert was an absolute must and Cody's did not disappoint. Sorry, gang... I did not take pictures but trust me, delish! We shared the Carrot cake cheesecake, Crème brûlée, and the chocolate brownie. I think I may have to go back just so I can get pictures for y'all. Great food, awesome service! Loved it!
google avatar

Shelly L.

Yelp
We keep going back to Cody's both in New Braunfels and San Marcos. Great drinks and amazing food.

Rhonda M.

Yelp
Excellent service, excellent apps, great vibe! But Red fish was served raw not just kinda raw! Totally raw. Double check no pics .....didn't even take off bill $$
google avatar

Yelp
You do not expect much from the strip mall near the outlet mall in a small town at the popular interstate exit. But you would be WRONG! This place is amazing. The menu, the craft cocktails, the service and the decor... but really it's the playlists that totally rocked me out and put the icing on the cake. Worth a drive from Austin or San Antonio just for this meal!
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
This is an excellent hidden gem, located close to I35 South that we enjoyed with 3 of our friends and family. The quality of the food served was excellent, for example the best steak I enjoyed in Texas recently besides Garrisons at the Fairmont. The service was also very attentive and appreciated. Only slight negatives were that we did not like the wobbliness of the 6 seat hightop, nor that the chef seems to enjoy garlic seasonings - which perhaps is great for those who like garlic, but not for people like me who do not. Fortunately, I ordered my absolutely incredible steak without the black garlic butter (onion butter on the side instead). However, my wife ordered the salad with jumbo tiger shrimp, but did not realize those would also be served with garlic sprinkled on top. Even so, the meal was fantastic and still deserved 5 stars. Also, not to forget, the deserts were also out of this world. Safe to say this is our favorite local restaurant in addition to Mudbugs in Buda.

Yelp
Came for dinner, was so good! Loved the dessert special. Yellowfin brie Akaushi short ribs Wagyu burger Pastry box dessert special

Yelp
Cody"s is the epitome of 'hidden gem', tucked away in a strip mall on the fringes of the outlet malls in a sleepy college town, this steak house could hold its own in Austin, Houston or San Francisco. Beef Wellington is tough and they nailed it. Yellow fun tuna with the perfect sear. Beautifully marbled ribeye. It does need saying the desserts, chocolate orange cake and carrot cheese cake, missed the mark. There wasn't enough vanilla ice cream to cut the cloying chocolate. Not everyone likes the orange and chocolate together. The carrot cake was dry and burnt on the bottom. Given the caliber of the menu, the desserts need outsourced if the pastry chef can do no better.
