15 Coffee Shops Open Late In Chicago

"Coffee Lab & Roasters in Lakeview takes their coffee seriously. They roast their coffee and espresso on-site, and offer a variety of specialty drinks like Kyoto-style cold brew or a pear-and-yuzu latte in case straight-up black coffee isn’t your speed—though it is exceptionally smooth and low on bitterness. We wouldn’t recommend posting up with a laptop unless you can handle sitting on benches for long stretches of time, but the quiet atmosphere and 6pm closing time make it the perfect place to have a low-key coffee catch-up with a friend." - veda kilaru

Coffee Lab & Roasters Lakeview Review - Lakeview - Chicago - The Infatuation

"As the name suggests, Coffee Lab & Roasters takes their coffee seriously. This Lakeview coffee shop roasts their coffee and espresso on-site, and offers a variety of specialty drinks like Kyoto-style cold brew or a “summer blossom” (pear-and-yuzu syrup) latte in case straight-up black coffee isn’t your speed—though it is exceptionally smooth and low on bitterness. We wouldn’t recommend posting up with a laptop unless you can handle sitting on benches for long stretches of time, but the quiet atmosphere and 6pm closing time make it the perfect place to have a low-key coffee catch-up with a friend." - Veda Kilaru

I had the blueberry matcha w/ whole milk. It was okay, not terrible but also not very amazing. Blueberry was very subtle barely even there. Matcha was unremarkable. Atmosphere is nice. A few customers, enough seats, good natural light. Nice vibe.

Google
A Must-Try Spot for Matcha Lovers! My husband is a huge fan of matcha lattes, so we decided to visit the highly-rated Coffee Lab and Roasters to try theirs—and it did not disappoint! Food: As soon as you walk in, you’ll notice everyone sipping and enjoying their hot or cold matcha drinks. It’s clear that this place is a favorite among matcha enthusiasts in the neighborhood. The matcha is fresh, high-quality, and lives up to its reputation. If you’re a matcha lover, this is the place to be! Cost: While it’s a bit on the pricier side, the freshness and quality of the matcha make it worth every penny. This isn’t your average matcha—it’s a premium experience. Ambience: The café is cute, cozy, and perfect for unwinding. Whether you’re catching up with friends or enjoying a quiet moment alone, it’s a great spot to refresh your soul with their delicious matcha. Transport and Parking: Public Transport: CTA Bus: Route #77 (Belmont) stops nearby on Belmont Ave, just a short walk from Lincoln Ave. Route #11 (Lincoln/Sedgwick) stops directly on Lincoln Ave, close to the address. CTA Train: The Brown Line (Paulina Station) is about a 10-minute walk east, and the Red Line (Belmont Station) is approximately a 10-minute walk south. Driving and Parking: Street parking is available (both metered and non-metered), but check signs for restrictions. Nearby parking garages, such as SP+ Parking at 2747 N Clark St, are a 5-minute drive or 15-minute walk away. You can also use apps like SpotHero to find and reserve parking spots. Overall: This is a must-visit spot for matcha lovers! While the price point might make it an occasional treat rather than an everyday stop, the quality and experience are well worth it.

Google
I would rate this establishment a 4.5, not 4 , but I cannot give it a perfect rating until I have tried a wider variety of their drinks and pastries. The interior of the establishment is very inviting and pleasant. The staff was welcoming, courteous, and attentive. They even inquired whether I intended to consume my order on the premises or take it with me, which is a thoughtful gesture that is not always offered at other establishments I've been to lately. The lady personally brought my drink and pastry to my table, which added a nice touch of personalized service. Lastly, it felt great for a date or chill vibes. I am definitely coming back! 😄

Google
They have the best quality and fresh roast beans making for a nice cappuccino. The baristas are an absolute delight to talk to, really friendly and nice. 10/10 for this coffee shop. They have some interesting seasonal drinks too

Catherine Hanley

Google
This was my first time visiting CL & R. We ordered 3 specialty lattes and a macchiato. All 4 drinks tasted great! We definitely want to go back and try their other drink options. Also, the pastries in the food case looked delicious! Service was kind and friendly and the overall atmosphere was positive and welcoming! I’m excited that we found this place through our Chicago Café Passport and rate it 5/5 coffee beans!

Google
Coffee Lab & Roasters in Lakeview is my go-to when I need a caffeine fix and a chill spot to get some work done. Last time, I grabbed their Kyoto-style cold brew ($5.50)—super smooth, no bitterness, and packed with flavor. I also tried the spinach & feta croissant ($5.75), which was flaky and delicious. The vibe here is cozy and modern, with plenty of natural light and friendly baristas who know their stuff. It's a great place to hang out, whether you're catching up with friends or just need some alone time with a good cup of coffee. Highly recommend checking it out if you're in the neighborhood.

Google
Coffee Lab & Roasters is an excellent, dog-friendly neighborhood coffee shop with a wonderful staff and just as wonderful coffee. I am a latte drinker and they have the best lattes (hot or iced) and seasonal flavors that could go toe-to-toe with any coffee shop in the city. This is a long overdue review - I've been coming here consistently for about a year and they hit the mark every single time. A good selection of pastries and coffee options, and they also carry some dairy free/gluten free pastries for anyone looking for that. The wait is worth it on the weekends and the line moves quickly.

Kate

Google
Best latte in Chicago. Consistently smooth and perfect ratio of milk to espresso. It’s one of the view shops in the city that I feel is worth it over my espresso machine. They’re also dog friendly and have an online ordering system to make it as easy as possible, particularly during peak hours. Love you coffee lab!

Yelp
The baristas were friendly. I had the Iced Pearadise Latte, although I didn't get much of the pear flavor it was still sweet and creamy. It was my first time visiting and thought it was very well decorated. I definitely want to come back and try their other lattes.
google avatar

June K.

Yelp
Ordered their latte with macadamia milk, and it was my first time! Subtly sweet and flavorful, better than oatmilk. I can't judge coffee based on lattes but their service was quick despite the line, and room is kind of tight but still a fair amount of seating inside, and three round tables outside. Bathroom was clean and nice as well :)
google avatar

Brooke L.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop in the neighborhood. Very friendly staff. The line moves quickly. Matcha and coffee options. I would go here over a chain any day! Most importantly - they have Phlour chocolate chip cookies and that keeps me coming back!
google avatar

Jinhee K.

Yelp
Really good coffee!! I enjoyed my latte. The pastries are large in size and looked delicious as well.
google avatar

Aditi S.

Yelp
We checked out this coffee shop last weekend and ordered 2 vanilla lattes from here. The baristas were kind and the service was quick. Our lattes were just okay, the milk to espresso to syrup proportions just tasted off. Despite that, there was plenty of seating inside and I could see this being a great place to work from during the week.

Mike W.

Yelp
They are the best place to get fresh roasted beans in Chicago their coffees are delicious and worth the price. I love that you still get a complementary drink when you buy a bag of beans. I definitely come here when I am running low also a great place to get some fantastic iced coffee
google avatar

Yelp
I went to Coffee Lab + Roasters today for the first time and it was great! The parking situation was easy which is so appreciated in the city. I ordered the (I think it was called) Hot Butter Latte and it was so, so good. I normally only get iced coffee and don't like hot beverages but this coffee truly blew me away. It was smooth and honestly felt like an internal hug. My fiancé ordered the Cafe Au Lait and also enjoyed his. Highly recommend this spot and can't wait to come back again!
google avatar

Yelp
I have been frequenting this intimate, cozy coffee shop since they first opened. Over the years and even with change of ownership, quality and service remains excellent. Baristas are friendly and recall repeat customer orders. The seating space is limited but there is seasonal outdoor seating. Love that you can pick from the daily rotation of light, medium or dark roasts, iced or hot. I gravitate towards the smooth Mexican (medium) blend and always grab a pastry or quiche to go (sourced from phflour bakery - no brainer). This place is always busy despite the three competing coffee shops nearby. They have built a solid following over the years! Love supporting independent coffee shops in the hood.

Yelp
Service friendly and fast! Coffee/ Latte was smooth - very good Very unassuming spot on Lincoln but warm and inviting vibe once you enter the door. Heard a lot of friendly neighborly conversations and smiles all around. Enjoyed this quick stop in so much!

Yelp
- Good coffee shop - Coffee is delicious (this is important) - Barista girls are cool. - I will gladly recommend to my friends

Yelp
TLDR - great drinks and service, not a lot of tables, short hours, and chairs were decent! So it's my spring break so I wanted to change it up and go somewhere I don't regularly go. Looking at the map, this place popped up and based on what I saw in photos there were chairs with back support so I'm in. Note they're only open to 1pm, which is a bummer for the non-morning people like myself. I get there and it's such a lovely space. The staffers were great and my iced chai latte was so lovely. I was nervous I wouldn't find seating but thankfully a table opened up right when I got there so I had a seat. The chairs are actually the same Ikea chairs I have at home lol. They also provide thin mats for the seating - not super helpful but a thoughtful gesture! I also didn't use any electronics but note they have so many plugs everywhere, which is great. The chairs too while they were pretty good are just ok (the hard backs don't feel good over time) but I can manage for like an hour or so before my back needing to leave the chair. In all, I'll be coming back! When I'm in the morning spirit ;-)

Natalia L.

Yelp
I really love this place! I've been trying to find a coffee shop that has really good matcha, and this place for sure has it. Some of their syrups are also house-made! The ambiance is always great, the baristas play great music, and they are really nice. Such a great location, it's super close to DePaul and is a great place to study and get work done.

Robert H.

Yelp
Very poor experience. I ordered a pour over, and they obviously didn't have the skill or experience to make it correctly. I watched the barista fiddle with the grinder for 10 minutes (not an exaggeration), before figuring out how to grind the coffee. Then he pulled out a set of instructions for making a pour over, which was not a good sign. Then, as he was making it, he accidentally turned off the scale. This was 15 minutes into the process. He told me his mistake and said he'd start over, but it had already taken too long. I asked if I could just have a cup of light-roast drip coffee, but they were out of that. So, I just said, "forget it," and left. They were very busy, and I couldn't wait another long period of time to get my refund. I could tell the coffee wasn't going to be good and didn't feel like waiting around for a sh*tty cup of coffee. Maybe the espresso-based drinks are good, but this is not a place to go if you want a competent pour over.

Yelp
Some of the best coffee and pastries I've ever had. The coffee has a lot of flavor and is very smooth. The cinnamon roll is not to be missed! Staff is super friendly, quick and spot ok with orders.
google avatar

Yelp
Small mom and pop shop comes highly recommended. Cafe latte did the business. Baked goods on offer. Not a lot of comfy/cozy seating but do you want coffee or not? Super friendly proprietors. Coffee prices slightly above average.
google avatar

Zulfiia K.

Yelp
Cozy coffee shop. Not many tables. You can sit outside at a table. Friendly polite staff. The latte was delicious, the croissants were also delicious.
google avatar

Genna G.

Yelp
This place is great. I'm shocked none of the other reviews mentioned dog friendly as everyone in line here had a dog with them which you don't see often and they were giving out dog treats. The drinks were delicious and they have the custom options im accustomed to ( sugar free vanilla syrup , milk alternatives such as almond, soy, oat etc). Large visible roasting room in the back proves they are the real deal. Sweets/ treats look good and love they have a variety of gluten free options from defloured ( this you don't typically see at small places ! ). Hours are a little limited 7-1 but frankly I don't allow myself to drink coffee in the afternoon so not a problem for me. Adequate cute seating space with 5 tables if you want to stay and enjoy your drink. I'll be back !

Yelp
Love this spot! We stopped in after getting bagels at Gotham and I loved the atmosphere. I got a brown sugar cinnamon iced latte -- so good!! We also got a cinnamon scone and it was delicious. Can't wait to go back!

Amun M.

Yelp
Tried the Ginger Snap latte but just tasted like a coffee with milk. The pumpkin chocolate muffin was yummy. Their online ordering system is quite odd as you can't order more than 4 coffees. Wouldn't try again

Alex K.

Yelp
Decent coffee shop. The coffee was pretty good but the real reason for coming here was to work and the WiFi is crap. Also it's a pretty tiny space. PLUS the latte was over $6 which a little too high for what you get
google avatar

Henah A.

Yelp
Just moved into the neighborhood and found this Gem! The coffee is amazing! And they also have gluten free/dairy free pastries. 10/10 highly recommend

Yelp
Oh my lavender. See, the best thing about living in Chicago are places like these. Millennial/Gen Z owned, relative, fun and an overall great environment. I was actually heading to get a bagel from the place next door but the Coffee Lab & Roasters' storefront was super inviting I just had to go in. The menu is simple yet somewhat unique. I got the Lavender Latte (hot) and if I lived close by, I would never get Starbucks ever again. It was one of (if not) THE BEST lattes I've ever had. I've been drinking and experimenting with coffee all over the world ever since I was 15 years old, so when a drink leaves a mark like that, you know it's THAT good. I was in such a rush I forgot to pick up one of their coffee bags but I'll definitely be getting some next time I come here. The coffee is delicious. I highly recommend you try this spot! They have cozy indoor and also outdoor seating.
google avatar

Micaela W.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop along Lincoln Ave! It's a fairly small shop -- there are 6 tables indoors and then a bar table that looks out the window. I appreciate that the tables were wider rather than deep and there were power strips with 3-4 outlets each, so you won't have to worry about all the outlets being used. It was a little pricier than other coffee shops (maybe due to inflation)... I got a cappuccino with lavender syrup and the syrup was really good -- it was very floral and not overly sweet.
google avatar

Yelp
Had to hop on here and write a review after trying the Honey Mango Iced Latte. It very well may have been the best iced latte I've ever had in my life. Staff is super nice at this place and the vibes are good. You get a free drink when you buy beans, which makes the trip to buy beans exciting when I need to refill my own home espresso setup! After trying dozens of shops over the years I can finally say that this is my favorite coffee shop in Chicago!

Eos K.

Yelp
Best latte I've tried so far! Very aromatic and literally was thinking about it every morning!

Jamie C.

Yelp
went here today for the second time and, yay, what a positive experience! i will definitely be back to try a non-specialty drink. i am usually a plain cortado guy, but i just couldn't resist their really special seasonal options. the first time i visited, it was late afternoon and so i got (i think) a honeydew matcha and some sort of savory pastry. both were delightful. this time, i got a maple sage latte and a danish. again, both delightful! i came in during a pretty big rush, but the staff were still all sooo nice. the person working the register was super efficient without sacrificing politeness. i did not catch their name but they had shorter dark hair and bangs. latte was made really well, too, so shoutout to whichever barista made it. it's a little on the pricier end, but a touch less expensive than some of its neighbors. for the neighborhood, i think it's reasonable. overall, a total winner. kind of makes me wish i was in lakeview more often.
google avatar

Yelp
I have been following them on Instagram for a month and I decided to check it out. I love going to different coffee shops in the city and seeing how different they are from Starbucks. Coffee Lab and Roaster are located in Diversey and Lincoln. I like the design of the coffee shop. Black and white are very bright and have a farm-style feel about them. The menu is simple and easy to read which is great. I got the iced coffee (my usual or cold brew if I want extra caffeine) and a blueberry muffin. The iced coffee and blueberry muffin was good. The service from the 2 young ladies (baristas) were friendly and greeted every customer that came in. From what I tell lots of regulars come here and I see why. Enough seating inside and I small outdoor seating too. Also, they roast all their beans on-site which is good and I can taste how quality of the beans. I live in Edgewater and they are a couple of coffee shops in my neighborhood coming here is worth the trip.

Joel M.

Yelp
The service was wonderful. Lively and friendly staff. All the neighbors came through and staff already new their orders and name and stories. By the steady flow of regulars, I'd say it's a solid coffee joint.
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
Looking for an aesthetic and trendy coffee shop- LISTEN UP HERE IT IS. My friend and I stopped in to grab drinks and work and let me tell you, it's a total vibe. The decor screams millennial plant mom with an IKEA decor obsession. The music is at a great volume and plays great new music. An iced lavender oat milk latte and croissant ran me about $12 but I think it was def worth it. Croissant was super flakey and latte was the perfect level of sweetness. They also have free wifi so you can be productive while fueling your coffee needs.
google avatar

Paige D.

Yelp
10/10 loved this place. Coffee is amazing, staff is friendly and quick and the ambiance was cozy small. Great if you can get a seat but if not, also perfect for take out. Highly recommend the cold brew. Have not had their pastries but they looked good!
google avatar

Sarju S.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop with excellent drip coffee at a reasonable price point. Seating for ten and quite accommodating with power outlets.
google avatar

Sandy L.

Yelp
Came across this cute cafe shop craving coffee. First walked in and was in awe how cute the decor and clean it was. Simple holiday coffee choices and pastry delights. Ordered all hot drinks, salted caramel, pumpkin, and earl grey. Had a chocolate qnd fig egg tart and almond croissant. Omg! This was the best almost croissant I have ever had in my life. Flaky on the outside and moist on the inside. Definitely was in heaven!
google avatar

Greg G.

Yelp
I loved this coffee shop. I don't normally write reviews, but my wife was bragging about how many people love her Yelp reviews. If you like great coffee and support team-husband, please like my review. Thanks :-)
google avatar

David Y.

Yelp
Best coffee in Lakeview. Staff is always wonderful, and the coffee always fresh. Love stopping by here when I'm in the area!
google avatar

Kyle P.

Yelp
Judging solely on the coffee, this place is a coffee drinker's haven. Prices are very reasonable as well, similar to Starbucks but much higher quality. Not only can you order different styles of coffee, you can also choose your beans and blends. I got the Brazilian cold brew, and it was one of the best cold brews I've ever had. I'll definitely be back to try more!
google avatar

Peter L.

Yelp
Was in the area having brunch at Batter & Berries with my fiancé. Usually not too particular about getting coffee at brunch places and I saw Coffee Lab was just down the street so we decided to stop in after eating. I got a Kyoto cold brew while my fiancé went with the honey butter iced latte. Loved both our drinks! The Kyoto cold brew was nice to have 4 different options of roast to pick from. I went with the Brazilian medium-dark roast. Just the perfect boldness. I tried my fiancé's honey butter iced latte and the honey added the subtle sweetness but the buttery note was just added that silky rich taste :chefs kiss: Definitely found my new coffee spot whenever I'm in Lakeview. Looking forward to trying all their different roasts and other drinks!

Yelp
I love how convenient this coffee shop is in relation to my house! The coffee and snacks are very good. I visited for the first time on a Saturday at 1 PM and it was completely packed with nowhere to sit. Obviously, this does happen at a lot of coffee shops, but Coffee Lab, in particular, is extremely small. There are 2 circle high tables (very small circumference), 4 square tables, 2 comfy chairs with a little nightstand-like table, and 4 high chairs at a bar that outlooks the window. Overall, not a lot of seating. I had the Lavender Latte with oat milk, which was very good, but too strong for me personally. Also, the honey bites were SO tasty! They reminded me of french toast with honey and whipped cream. Sidenote: you CAN order a half order of the honey bites ($3.50) rather than getting 12 pieces which was too much for me. The environment is very inviting/cozy, they offer free iced water (huge plus!), and it was decently quiet. The music playing wasn't too loud unless you were sitting at the table right under the speaker (we were)... but overall the music genre was not to my taste. Overall, due to the proximity, I will probably be back, but it sucks there isn't much seating.
google avatar

Stephanie F.

Yelp
This is the first place where I have ever been able to differentiate the quality of the cold brew! When you order cold brew, there are 4 different types you can choose from. I got the Brazil with oat milk and it was so smooth, and not bitter. I love coffee but not usually to the level where I can tell that some coffee is better than others. However, if I lived near here and could choose this cold brew every day, I would. They also have such unique, yummy-sounding seasonal lattes: peach cobbler latte, coconut mocha, honey mango latte. My friend got the honey mango and while an unusual flavor combination, it was actually really good! You could really taste fresh mango and it was pretty sweet. I wish I could come back here and try all the drinks!
google avatar

Vicki M.

Yelp
A cute coffee shop with quality beans, a nice seating area, and the roaster on site (so you know it's fresh!) I ordered a cold brew which was delicious, but wish it came with a little less ice. There are a few tables inside and some outside for when the weathers nice. Still want to try some of their other drinks so I will be back!
google avatar

Sherry Y.

Yelp
We stopped by Coffee Lab & Roasters having been told of a 30 minute wait time for Batter & Berries nearby for brunch. We were pleasantly surprised at such a minimalist, modern cafe nearby. This location seems to do some lovely pourover coffee, but I opted for a cortado for my first time. I am one of those people that drink their beverages in minute sips, enjoying it gradually over time. With this cortado, I found the flavors just robust enough but still immensely smooth. Absolutely delicious and no sugar needed. The ambiance here is very calm, and I can imagine working for hours at a time at this cozy location. Balanced with raw wood and cream colors, the space feels very clean and bright - perfect for a workspace. The only difficulty I could possibly think of is that seating might be an issue if you arrive during a hectic hour. However, the cafe uses their space very economically, so I imagine most times you could grab a chair (as long as you don't mind sharing counterspace with someone else). There's also some lovely window bar seating should you come by yourself. The staff was really kind and personable. Our drinks were ready in a matter of seconds. Highly recommend to the coffee connossieurs in the area!

Sandra Z.

Yelp
Brown sugar cinnamon latte. Delish! The right balance not overly sweet. Great, approachable, happy baristas.

Jessica G.

Yelp
This place just opened, but I'm excited to welcome them to the neighborhood. Great lattes, expertly roasted coffee (roasted on site!) and a delicious chocolate almond croissant. What more could I ask for? How about friendly service- they have that too. I'll be back to try out their breakfast sandwiches.
google avatar

Monica S.

Yelp
Some of the best coffee in Chicago. Everyone is so nice in here too. You gotta love a local coffee joint that feels homey and is so cute.

Amanda O.

Yelp
I discovered this place on a deal app, and I'm SOOOOO glad that I did. Every single thing I've eaten & drunk there has been amazing. The service is above & beyond any of my expectations. I have an injury on my foot, and the baristas are always quick to run around the counter to get the door for me. They even gave me a treat for my dog in the car! The place is unassuming, just a chill, laid back atmosphere. There is a small quaint patio out front to enjoy your coffee & pastries. I have been there several times now, and each time I leave more impressed than the last. I highly recommend this place up anyone looking for a good cup of coffee, delicious quiche (the tomato & basil is to die for), or a nice croissant. They also do have items available in gluten & dairy free. That's not my cup of tea, but it's really nice they offer stuff for everyone! Hands down this is one of the very best coffee shops in the city. I live in Logan Square, but I prefer to drive over here when I want a nice treat!!!
google avatar

Christopher V.

Yelp
Mochas are smooth, full bodied and rich. The owner is usually on-site pulling espresso herself. They roast the beans in house. ..now that's quality control. Nice assortment of pastries to choose from too. Not the best layout to comfortably get work done, but perfect to grab a nice coffee or chatting with friends.
google avatar

Ingrid Y.

Yelp
This is place is really special. It has a wide selection of beans, drinks, and pastries, and the people who work here are so nice and helpful. I went in to get some beans to make cold brew. The baristas were super patient with me, explaining the blends that they had available and even letting me taste the ones that they had on tap. I bought a bag of the Ethiopia light roast beans and got a large cold brew for free. The drink was delicious. I can't wait to make cold brew with the beans!
google avatar

Tracy Y.

Yelp
A great little place to grab a coffee. It's small inside, but they have a cute little patio set up for use in the warm months. I'm glad they are so close.
google avatar

Andrew W.

Yelp
This is nice neighborhood coffee shop in the Lincoln park/Lakeview area. Their coffee is good and the staff is friendly. The side is also good. Although I have not studied or work it here the large tables make it look like a good place to hang out and get some work done. I wish they had better hours and more of a pastry/food selection. Overall, however, a good coffee shop.
google avatar

Yelp
Well that's awesome! Great place to relax and get a great coffee. So many coffee shops around town that are great but somehow this place feels different. Coffee seems to made with more care and effort. Definitely will be back. Great for a quick cup on the go or to stay and enjoy.
