Where to Find Barista Competition-Worthy Signature Coffee Drinks Around Los Angeles - Eater LA

"This spring, Korean-American entrepreneur Curtis Park debuted his coffee bar on Silver Lake’s Sunset Triangle Plaza. For the business name, he drew on ideas from Richard Dawkins, who first used the term meme in a 1976 book that discusses how ideas spread and vary. His signature drinks are a good example of that concept. Smoking Tiger plays on the coffee world’s popular espresso tonic. Here, they team espresso with house-carbonated water and fermented apricot, which steeps in sugar for 100 days on shelves. Tree Frog substitutes matcha and Faithful Toad substitutes chai. In each case, stir with a metal straw to integrate the flavors." - Joshua Lurie

11 Australian Coffee Shops for Laid-Back Morning Vibes in LA - Eater LA

"Silver Lake’s newish Roo shows off the Instagram side of the Australian cafe movement. Littered with colorful touches and carrying a menu that includes rainbow sprinkle toast and lots of latte art, this is the place to go for that perfect ‘gram." - Crystal Coser, Farley Elliott

Roo Coffee Hops Into the Silver Lake Breakfast Conversation This Week - Eater LA

"The newest Australian coffee company to land on LA’s shores is Roo Coffee, a cutely-named storefront with some prime real estate right in front of Sunset Triangle Plaza. Roo is officially open for business as of yesterday. Much like other popular Australian offshoots to make their way to Los Angeles lately, Roo is trading in espresso culture and fresh, colorful cafe fare of its home country. Owners Elyse Goyen and Tom and Kate O’Connor are using Counter Culture Coffee beans (which makes sense, considering their proximity to that company’s beautiful training center), and turning out a tight menu that includes everything from those ubiquitous avocados to granola to nutrition-loaded super smoothies. The full opening menu is below. As for the space, expect a small square footage with big ideas. Pink terrazzo tables offer gathering space for friends, while white exterior cafe tables let diners enjoy the sun. There is no wifi for now though, so plan accordingly. Roo Coffee is officially open, and is keeping hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily starting tomorrow. Today they close at 4 p.m., and will stop doing food most days around 5 p.m. as well." - Farley Elliott

Google
This is a standout coffee shop! The proprietor is truly passionate and knowledgeable. I didn’t know what to get so I asked for a recommendation. Based on my preferences the host made me the ‘smoking tiger’. I was blown away! It was one of the most unique espresso drinks I’ve ever tried. My wife had the iced cappuccino which was also excellent. I highly recommend coming here to try something new or an old favorite - either way it will be handcrafted to your delight!

I visited this place in the morning time. Parking is available on the street in the alley next to the coffee shop. I tried a mocha and its taste was excellent. Not too sweet but its sweetness was just right. They don't seem to be making bread themselves, but the texture of the croissants was great. I highly recommend here!!

Google
Great morning coffee in silver lake. Love the Cappuccino ☕ I ordered. Especially for the special cup cover design easy for drinking and prevent leakage! The store is nice decorated with the blackboard and the water bowl for dogs. May try croissant 🥐 next time.

Google
Best vanilla iced latte I’ve ever had. In house Madagascar Vanilla was phenomenal. Very aesthetically pleasing indoor seating area. Would come again !!

Google
Really great service! The employee working when I visited was so friendly and inviting. I ordered a latte and the mini chocolate croissant. Both were awesome. The latte was perfect and the temperature was nice and warm throughout. Really smooth espresso. I loved the croissant too. You could tell it was made with quality ingredients.

Google
Considering the name, I was afraid this was another instagrammable coffee shop, but happily discovered that the coffee, matcha, and maesil cha here are EXCELLENT. The shop clearly uses quality ingredients and is committed to their craft. My only complaint is much like the one echoed in some of the reviews below. Unfortunately, was not met with a warm welcome and when I asked a question, was met with a cold response.

Google
Place is cute and coffee is good but the Ai art everywhere rlly ruins the whole thing, for a silver lake establishment I expected them to be more connected to the local artist and the ai art was truly horrendous to see LOL

Sam VanHeukelom

Google
I would have given 4 stars because the coffee (had a Cappuccino) is really good, but, I did not get a warm welcome, only 2 umbrellas to provide some shade (neighbor has 4), no cosy atmosphere, only limited interaction with the customers and most of all, it looked like the guy didn’t like his job and on top of that, they charged 4.5 USD + taks for a tiny Cappuccino without any welcome and comfort. Will not come back.

Yelp
Cheery, spacious spot. I was in town on vacation and we stopped here to grab some drinks. I got the Smoking Tiger. Thought it was a little pricey initially, but I had to alter my opinion after sipping that drink - it is absolutely lit and incomparable. I literally had to order two within our five minute stop-in initially intended to grab just any coffee for the road, because the first one mesmerized and amazed me to the point that I had to slug it and then just sit and ponder how it was so good. Nice staff.

Yelp
My cousin and I usually are out searching for coffee shops to try out and I found this one because it's close to my dentist. Ordered the blueberry dark mocha latte and it's popping with flavor. You taste the hints of dark mocha mixed in with blueberry. Definitely recommend. Baristas are very nice with accommodations/requests and they don't even charge extra for milk alternatives! It's a cute little coffee shop with a couple of tables inside and also outside seating is available. Restrooms are also open! The only trouble is finding parking in this area. Must try nonetheless!

Yelp
If I can give this place a 0 star, I would give the 0 star. Horrible HORRIBLE coffee and customer service. The owner makes the coffee, and he obviously does not know what he is doing. He also did not like when we kindly asked if we can change our drink. He took it personal and gave attitude. Refused to make a new one unless we paid for it, even though we paid for our original drink that was the same price. He refused to give us a refund and made several rude comments. Parking is also not fun so don't waste your time coming here

Yelp
STREET PARKING!! hate that :'( just went in because it was 104 degrees and i was burning after visiting pine and crane next door. the worker was friendly in helping me choose a drink (he could tell i was indecisive) and i got the lavender latte. the drink was decent - it's nothing special of a lavender latte. the shop was small and pretty cute. the only downside was if you wanted to have a sat down conversation, you would have to sit shoulder to shoulder since there was only a side of booth seating.
google avatar

Yelp
Service was quick; I ordered a matcha latte. There is indoor/outdoor seating and it is dog friendly. Great coffee shop to work, study or meet up with friends. Parking- street parking
google avatar

Yelp
I grabbed theory vanilla lattes and one of their pastrys The combination of the two was delightful! The sweet and moist cake along with their latte had the perfect balance of harmony!

Yelp
Was in the neighborhood, it was nearby, so decided to try one. I asked the barista which drink is popular, blueberry dark mocha was one of them. I had hot latte instead of iced one, the latte was $7.75. there was a taste of blueberry, so it was nice but the hot latte cup size was small. The cafe is cute and nice. There were patio seats.

Yelp
My Go-To Spot for Coffee on Sunset! When I'm craving REAL coffee, I skip the chains and head straight to Coffee Memes. Curtis is not just a barista--he's a true artist, crafting each cup with care and passion. If you want to experience coffee at its finest, forget the corporate chains and support your local spots. You won't find anything like this at Starbucks. Trust me, once you taste this coffee, you'll be hooked. #SupportLocal #SunsetCoffee #RealCoffee #LocalLove #CoffeeArt #CurtisKnowsHisBeans

Yelp
Cafe Memes is a relatively new coffee shop in Silver Lake neighborhood in Los Angeles. We came in and tried exactly what the shop recommended - an iced Americano or and a Latte. Cafe Memes has a beautiful, light interior and has a small but well put together coffee menu. The coffee shop has a small selection of pastries and also sells great assortment of coffee beans. There is a generous outside patio and a smallish interior, with several tables. Food: 4.5 stars Vibe: 4 stars Service: 5 stars Tips: Plenty of street parking Great to hang out Quick service Great coffee Generous outside space

Yelp
A coffee place right next to Pine&Crane, what an ideal location! This shop seems relatively new in Silver Lake area, and my friend and I came in for a caffeine stop. I got a vanilla latte with oat milk, my go to when trying our new coffee shops, and my friend got a matcha latte. The coffee overall was a 3.75/5, smooth but I like my coffee flavor richer, I've been wondering if I'm just picky about the brand of oat milk that's used. The interior is spacious and has a clean aesthetic, and the service was 5/5. There's also lots of street parking available during the day time.

Yelp
Nice coffee place by echo park farmers market place . The jalapeño cream cheese croissant is a must try & have it warmed up . Cortado was good , the guys at the cafe are knowledgeable about the coffee . They have seating options to have your drink indoor & outdoors . Sunday morning coffee w a view of the street is blissful

Yelp
The smoking tiger tasted like Korean soda and it was very unique in its own experience. Very creative, and the latte tasted very smooth as well. Service was exceptional, and the ambiance was a quick grab and go setting. Highly recommend if you want to try out unique coffee!
google avatar

Yelp
Aesthetically pleasing minimalist coffee shop. Had the Vanilla Iced Latte w/ Oat Milk+ Matcha Latte w/Almond Milk. Love that you can see the vanilla bean specs in my drink BUT overall drinks were a bit more on the diluted side. Parking- street parking available.
google avatar

Danai B.

Yelp
The coffee was ok but the barista forgot my order and served other people that came later until I had to ask. He also denied a mother with her newborn to use the restroom, until they buy something first, which I thought was not right
google avatar

Valentina K.

Yelp
I love love love the iced vanilla latte here. The quality of the coffee beans they used is incredible and tastes amazing. So good that I bought a bag of beans to brew at home!! I love that they use vanilla beans and not syrup. Probably one of the best I've had. The guy making our drink was super sweet and knew what he was doing. I love the vibe of this little cafe. Definitely a must try location.
google avatar

Yelp
I stopped by this coffee shop on a whim since we had lunch at Pine and Crane and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of their coffee. I ordered a mocha latte, and it was one of the best I've ever had - rich, chocolatey, and balanced with the espresso. The menu had a lot of other interesting options with seltzer water but u wasn't feeling spontaneous enough for those. The interior signage and design elements were done really well and gave the coffee shop a cozy and inviting feel. The seating was comfortable, and I loved the natural lighting from the large windows. The staff was super friendly and made me feel right at home. They were knowledgeable about the menu and happy to answer any questions I had. Overall, I had a great experience at this coffee shop and would definitely recommend it to others.

Yelp
I can't handle caffeine, but water is boring, so I'm always looking for delicious alternatives. Here at Coffee Memes I tried their lavender latte with decaf, and it was tasty -- surprisingly including some spice. Lavender reminds me of soap, so I'm not a fan of it in other things usually. Not soapy at all. I also got a chocolate croissant, and it was very blah, like a pastry from Starbucks. I recommend everyone in LA check out La Chouquette on Melrose, so they know what standard they should be holding other pastries to. The decor in Coffee Memes is clean and pleasant without being boring. Check out the artisanal decayed wall! And the server was great. He's proud of the work he's doing and the food they're providing. No attitude, just kindness and enthusiasm.
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly good coffee and very quick service. I got the blueberry Mocha Latte which normally isnt my thing, but it was sweet and good for a hot summer day. It isnt over done and just compliments the coffee nicely. Amazing AC for the summer months!!
google avatar

Christian R.

Yelp
Wonderful hole in the wall, right next to where they do the farmer's market on Tuesdays and Saturdays! Curtis was a swell guy who's service really made my whole experience and got the Tree Frog which was DELICIOUS! Highly recommend and will definitely come back!
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
Excellent service. I was greeted right away. I have had this place bookmarked and I was in the area, so, no brainer I was going to stop in. I got an iced vanilla oat latte and a butter croissant. Both were good, but nothing that stood out to me. The lids are my favorite. I love how it's raised and there's a less likely chance of my drink spilling. I have been known to be a bit clumsy sometimes, but because of the design of the lid, I wasn't worried. Lol. Parking was a bit challenging, which was the only thing that sucked. The outdoor space is great and there's seating inside if that's what you like. Great service and friendly staff. : )

Miel Y.

Yelp
Please check out this cafe!! We just randomly came in for coffee after brunch on Sunday. We got smoking tiger and iced cappuccino and surprisingly it was so amazing!! All the staffs are friendly and kind. They explained nicely about their special coffee. This place is nice to hang out with your dogs too. I love this place and fell in love with their coffee!

Yelp
Live near the area and decided to try this place on Easter Day when it was cold and rainy. On the way in a sweet homeless girl in her early 20's asked for something to eat. So I asked her to come in and select a pastry so I could buy it for her. She stood near the exit while I was purchasing. The barista waved his hand and told her, "please stand outside... I will bring it to you" I completely understand an owners business views on homeless people entering there establishment. But on a cold rainy Easter morning with no patrons, seems quite inhumane. My friend later asked if he shoeeed her out. He felt it was in bad taste. Which later validated my thoughts. It seemed like a poor inhumane sense of judgement. Overall coffee was pretty good. And cannot give it 1 star. But my friend asked if we should grab food there since it was Easter and most things were closed. We decided not to since we shared the same sentiment about that situation.
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop in Silverlake. I ordered the iced cappuccino which was good. There was only one barista working but he was very quick and efficient.

Julien B.

Yelp
Third time or so here but last for sure, ordered 2 espressos with a small cup of hot water on the side, irritated owner wants to charge me for 2 americanos instead as my order equals to 2 "deconstruct americanos". What?! Ok rude owner you're not charging me $1 for a small cup of hot water and you obviously have enough customers not to bother with potentially returning ones. Unbelievable.
google avatar

Yelp
Always adventure out to try new coffee shops and of course using Yelp and found this spot . I decided to go with the lavender matcha . It was good but as only tasting the lavender which I don't mind . I would definitely come back to try other drinks . Fast and friendly setvice
google avatar

Steph L.

Yelp
I had high expectations for this spot because of all the reviews. I wanted to try something unique to them and I was underwhelmed when ordering the Smoking Tiger. It wasn't bad but it also wasn't game changing. I think when I go back I'll try something a little more classic.
google avatar

M B.

Yelp
This coffee shop easily ranks among my favorites. You can't miss their Blueberry Dark Mocha Latte - it's a must-try. It's one of those rare coffee spots that serves up great brews without the side effects of anxiety. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Susie D.

Yelp
Hmm I don't know what meme I'd use to describe this cafe, but it would def have a cat because it's cozy, outer space because it's amazing, and rainbows because there's so much to love. First, I love that it's on a reclaimed street so that patrons can enjoy their goods outside in the parklet. Then, the pastries are phenomenal. The croissant is quite excellent with super flaky layers and buttery dough underneath, while the lavender doughnut had a pronounced flavor and beautiful purple color throughout. My partner enjoyed his latte, but the Tree Frog was alright. I appreciate the uniqueness of it and the homemade apricot syrup, but there was so little matcha at the top that it was barely detectable. I would've liked a more equal balance. I mean, not like we didn't finish everything. Another great cafe day.
google avatar

Marie G.

Yelp
Wow! So good! I stopped here on a whim after picking up dessert from a nearby bakery. I ordered an iced americano with a splash of almond milk. I haven't had great coffee in a while as I've been trying to curb my coffee spending recently.
google avatar

Gohar K.

Yelp
The cappuccino here is perfection, I mean perfection !!!!! A must stop when in the area. The coffee beans they use is high quality, so all their drinks come out really good. My favorite is the cappuccino. The perfect amount of coffee and foam and really no need for any added sweeteners. It's a must stop for me when in the area.
google avatar

Kylie T.

Yelp
I really enjoyed coming here!! I got the lavender matcha latte and it hit the spot. Strong on the lavender flavor for sure but it was exactly what I was craving when I stopped by. I can in with a group around 7:30am on a Thursday and it wasn't busy at all (except for us haha). However, only one barista was working at the time! I felt so bad he was responsible for all of our orders and drinks but he got everything out in a normal amount of time. Huge props to him! The inside is pretty small but there are a few tables and ample seating outside.

Amie H.

Yelp
The guy who makes the coffee is literally so rude ever. Super cute coffee shop, good location but this guy could not give a shart about customer service. He gives attitude when you ask him about the drinks and when he makes your drink, he just leaves it on the counter without saying anything. Saw so many people walk up to the counter confused and ask him if the drinks were theirs and he just ignores them? Sir, you look like you hate your life honestly.

Yelp
- Locale Destination - It's on Griffith park Blvd and Maltman Ave in Sliver lake. It's right next to "Pine & Crane". Ambiance: modern, white, simple. Very small inside but seating both inside and outside. Menu: Simple coffee menu and pastries. Service: quick Parking: street meter or street - Gluttony Expedition - Cappuccino: I found the good coffee as good as Bluebottle, but this is different creature from Bluebottle. Less milky, bolder "coffee" flavor, but it's very mild, soft, well rounded, no harsh coffee taste. You'll love this if you prefer "less milk, more coffee" taste in coffee. Cortado: very rounded, bold coffee flavor w/o milk taste. Great! - Conqueror's Deduction - I still prefer creamy and rich coffee from Bluebottle to this, but this is different from bluebottle! If you prefer less milk taste, you'd prefer this to Bluebottle. Fantastic cappuccino and cortado! *** Coffee Ranking *** updated 3/8/22 Cappuccino w/whole milk comparison 1. Gnarwhal Coffee Co 2. Bluebottle 3. Coffee Memes 4. 301 coffee 5. Cognoscenti coffee

Yelp
The dumpling place next door want open yet and it was such a beautiful day, I decided to enjoy a coffee and pastry while I waited. I ordered the jalapeño cream cheese croissant and a mocha. Both delicious! The croissant was actually stuffed and they warned it perfectly. The chocolate use for their mocha was fabulous! So dark and rich.
google avatar

Yelp
Coffee Memes is a Korean-owned coffee shop in Silver Lake that does everything right. The staff is super friendly and drinks are made quite quickly. They have some nice outdoor seating which can be really relaxing while sipping on your caffeination. They have a lot on the menu but the "Meme" drinks are where it's at. Espresso + Tonic + something to make that particular creation special. I went with their most popular Meme the Smoking Tiger. Tonic, Espresso, and Apricot, oh my! Gave me just the boost I needed for weekend errands. Plus they have the smartest to-go cups I've ever seen in the business - No spills possible! Loved what I had and I can't wait to keep going back, working my way through their whole menu!
google avatar

Itcel G.

Yelp
I had gone to Coffee Meme just because I wanted to get out of the house. The staff was really nice, the coffee was amazing (I got a iced vanilla latte). And they have different varieties of snacks (I got a VG chocolate chip cookie warmed up). Overall it's a really nice vibe and I loved the scenery outside. :)
google avatar

Daniela G.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood spot with ample outdoor seating (with umbrellas!). The inside is fairly small and narrow so it felt crowded when standing aside from the line to look at the menu. I had a guava tea which was delicious and freshly brewed. Friends got the matcha drinks and raved too.
google avatar

Anna H.

Yelp
The owner of this shop is a jerk. I wanted to connect to wifi before ordering my coffee and he was very rude about it.
google avatar

Audrey L.

Yelp
Nice coffee shop! The coffee is pretty good, but the pastries are actually what impressed me. There's plenty of room for seating outdoors which is really nice. I got a cold brew and this was good, but nothing too special. The "memes" look really interesting, so your impressions may be different if you try one of these drinks! I also got a pear danish and this was super good!! The crust was very buttery and flakey and the filling was delicious. I was definitely surprised at how good this was since it looked pretty unassuming. Overall this is a great coffee shop! The coffee is reasonably priced, and I'd like to try one of the "memes" next time. Don't skip out on the pastries!
google avatar

Bianca R.

Yelp
Came here to pickup my Too Good To Go bag and discovered the best cheese danish in LA! It's a very modern, small, quiet store in the Silverlake neighborhood. Server was nice and efficient plus the bag contains 5 assorted pastries for $9.99. I love supporting sustainable and responsible businesses!
google avatar

Sofya P.

Yelp
Matcha was decent. Tree frog - tastes like fermented matcha soda, kind of liked it. The wall paint color is so rustic and beautiful, nicely done. Service was very helpful!
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place when I was in the neighborhood grabbing a burger from the Win-Dow. Their menu is inspired by Korean flavors and in turn is very Angeleno! I ended up getting an iced matcha latte with the lavender syrup and it was a delight! I definitely enjoyed the charm of this place and shall be returning very soon since it is both close to the places that I like to frequent! Street parking may or may not be in your favor, but I will tell you that the walk from wherever you parked your car is worth it :)
google avatar

Kim C.

Yelp
Came here for the pastries and they were so delicious! Brought me back to Paris for 15 minutes. I tried the jalapeño cheese croissant, which was a unique combo, but delicious! My husband had the classic butter croissant which he added his own French chestnut filling. I got my friend the cinnamon roll, and he really enjoyed it as well. I've read a lot of great reviews about their coffee, so that's next on my list to try! The only thing is that parking on the street can be a little challenging! Loop around a few times and hopefully you'll get a spot!
google avatar

Irene C.

Yelp
Coffee Memes was super cute and the staff were all super friendly. Loved that they're dog friendly as well, my dog and I were able to sit outside in the little patio area that they have. Their cinnamon roll croissant pastry and the praline pastry were both standouts to me -- I haven't tried their coffee yet but it looked good as well!
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Just came across this place after buying turon from United Bakery. Didn't know what to get , so the barista suggested the blueberry mocha. It was delish. They had a variety of pastries , some vegan some regular. I ordered the chocolate croissant and chocolate chip cookie both vegan and they were amazing. Place is very clean. Will definitely return and bring my wife.
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
Nice friendly service :) A couple options for milk options and they have a pretty simple menu so you're not overwhelmed with options.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
I kind of love this place more than is reasonable. Each drink is delicious. The maesil-cha doesn't just feel like it's making me healthy; it feels like it's making me happy :-) Something to know: they generally don't start making drinks until you're in the store, even if you've ordered online. But the wait's never been too long. And because it matters, they also keep a clean restroom.
google avatar

Jae L.

Yelp
5/5 their iced vanilla coffee w oatmilk $7 so could be pricey but worth the price in my opinion Owner is friendly and their coffee never disappoints!
google avatar

Yzabelle A.

Yelp
coffee was yummy, wish they filled my drink to the top of the cup. if you're charging me $7 for a latte at least make sure i'm getting a full cup!
