18 Essential Greenville, South Carolina, Restaurants

"“Bordertown food” is what chef Dayna Lee-Márquez calls the menu at Comal 864, a version of Tex-Mex she grew up on. She was a James Beard semi-finalist nominee last year for Best Chef Southeast. She produces sauces by hand, and items like birrieria ramen and torta ahogada appear as specials, but the reason to head to the former textile general store in the Water Tower District is for the stuffed burritos. An avid activist, Lee-Márquez often hosts events for local organizations and issues she supports." - Stephanie Burnette

We went for an early lunch on a Friday morning. Just missed the breakfast burritos apparently, but all good. The chips and queso were fantastic, as well as the birria tacos. Don't miss the horchata either!

Google
Comal 864 is a hidden Mexican food watering hole in the San souci area. Their chips and dip are so addicting, and their quesadilla were perfect. Highly recommend checking this establishment out.

Very cozy atmosphere, you can smell the deliciousness from down the street. The queso birria tacos were mouth watering. I rode my bicycle about five miles to pull up on Cinco de Mayo and really enjoyed the entire experience. 🌮 🍅 🥑

Google
Food was very good. I had a burrito. Very tasteful inside. Burrito was humongous and now I feel like I can just take the best nap ever. Highly recommend this place. I myself will be coming back to see what else they have.

Google
Awesome hole in the wall Mexican place close to downtown! Ashleigh and Caroline joined me to try this place end of October. We sat outside. I had the birria cheese beef tacos and the elote which were both delicious. They brought the food out to us and served us outside. Will come back again! I love mayo!

Google
The venue is disarmingly simple and casual. Chilaquiles were excellent. The chorizo burger was a nice spin on the American standard. The breakfast tacos were substantial and tasty. Oh, and the staff was delightfully friendly.

Google
We were recommended this place by a friend, and it was a great recommendation. It's a clear neighborhood favorite, and as Texas natives, my husband and I were excited about every bite. The chips were great, we got the spicy salsa and omg. Incredible. The prices seemed a little steep, but as soon as we tasted our food, we knew it was worth it. The portions were filling, and the food was flavorful, and hit the spot so perfectly. We took advantage of the outdoor seating, but the had plenty available inside as well, and the service was great! Our next time in Greenville, we'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Divey little Mexican joint on the outskirts of West Village. Parking is limited so you might have to work your own spot in. Order at the counter and they bring the food out to your table - process super easy and simple. Friendly service and staff as well! Food was outstanding. My fiancé got the chicken burrito (leftovers for the next day) and I got the birria quesitacos. Will absolutely be returning here just for the tacos. The birria melted in your mouth and if you add the broth.... Wow. Incredible! Can't wait to come back soon!

Yelp
I had been wanting to check this place out after hearing all the awards and nominations they received and was underwhelmed unfortunately. Service: Fantastic, very attentive staff and very cordial. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the service and wish more places were like this. Food: I had the Barbacoa special, wife had a tortilla like sandwich, kids had a quesadilla and rice and beans. Their tortillas are thicc so that was nice. Wife enjoyed what she ate but it was difficult to eat and very messy. Kids quesadilla was fine, rice was good. Beans were some of the worst beans I've ever had at a restaurant. Completely flavorless, almost like someone dumped a can of beans and heated it up and served it. Barbacoa was unfortunately nothing special, not that flavorful and I had a big piece of connective tissue that was inedible. Not impressed. Value - Prices were reasonable if the food had flavor, 65 for a family of 4 with 1 beer is a little steep for what we had. I would try it again if I'm in the neighborhood but wouldn't go out of my way.

Yelp
Amazing - really nothing else to say. Everyone inside is pleasant. Great food quickly. Everything from birria ramen, to random specials to their gianttttt sandwiches it is just insane how good their food is. Love this place. Friend brought me a chicken quesadilla because they didn't know what I wanted - generally not something to get excited about - not with this one this one was amazing. Again I don't know how they do it but just go - try anything you'll be happy!!

Yelp
We loved this spot! So glad we discovered it. Quite the popular joint on a Saturday night. It was hard to get a table, since smaller inside. We had to wait a few minutes after ordering and stalk some to grab as they left lol. Worth it. The menu looked great. The perfect mix of authentic and fusion foodie items. The atmosphere in there was great. The staff was so friendly and welcoming to everyone. The girl at the register was so nice and let my visiting dad ask her all the questions lol. The manager was awesome-- high energy and fun-- kept everyone happy. Good hospitality! We ordered a little of everything to all share and try. Being raised in CA w all Mexican people and eating in Mexican homes, I'm spoiled and very picky. I need the real deal, authentic stuff. I read the owners were from Texas and I was skeptical.. I didn't want Tex Mex style. But then I read the reviews, saw the pics, and saw they had mulitas and nopales. Done deal! We ordered: The quesa birria tacos (comes w 3 and the consumé, which is the dipping broth.) Think French Dip sandwich, but tacos. Birria is like a stew meat (traditionally goat, often pork or beef now), and tortillas are pan fried. A bit on the heavy, greasy, heartier side. It's not ever my fav no matter where I eat it, but the guys ate it up, and it's very popular all over. They loved it. We ordered two mulitas: a chicken one and a beef one. I was shocked that they were so big! The ones I'm used to in CA are mini. But these were great! They're like a taco and quesadilla had a baby. Lol They stuff it like a quesadilla w all the fixings and cheese, and pan fry so the ends all around it get crispy and make the cheese ends crispy. Delicious!! I loved the chicken more, but I'm picky w steak texture. The guys loved both! The homemade guacamole was great! Flavorful and fresh! The three street tacos we tried were: Al Pastor (marinated pork), Asada (grilled steak), and Nopales (grilled prickly pear cactus! Hard to find at most spots unless authentic. So good!) loved them all. My son had his usual basic chicken and cheese tacos on flour tortillas lol. Boringgggg. But he liked them. They had a local lady selling her desserts in there at a back table. Many families, college kids, eclectic single folks, alike, all up in there enjoying this deliciousness! This part of town is slowly getting gentrified, slowly growing out from Pendelton St, it seems. Hope for more new food spots coming in like this one. I read they recently received a food award, so no wonder they were busy. Prices were very reasonable. We will be back! Everyone is still talking about it from a week or more ago.

Yelp
This place is SO. GOOD. Best breakfast tacos and burritos we've tried in the area. The owner was a James Beard award semifinalist for good reason. Very laid back and casual place, not big at all so prepare for a possible wait when you go. We usually go for brunch although we've tried dinner take out too which was awesome.

Yelp

Yelp
Authentic food with very good seasoning and taste- started with chip, cheese and guacamole- guacamole and chips very good. Great service from friendly welcome to multiple staff serving the meal. Nice relaxed and chill ambience. We had the chicken burrito and chicken quesadilla. Good portions in fact brought some home. Nice vibe to be there !

Yelp
Extremely friendly people, fresh quality food, and good music! It was very quick and made for a nice meal.

Yelp
Food is legit; both breakfast and lunch/dinner. Nice atmosphere. Decent parking. Knowledgeable staff. Good prices. My new go-to place for casual Mexican grub.

Yelp
Excellent Birria quesadilla, Birria Ramen and Tacos. Will definitely be back. Inexpensive and casual. Street corn soup was also good. Friendly staff excellent service.

Yelp
Amazing food! Awesome and friendly staff. They're very flexible and from what I've seen online they love trying new things! My cousin didn't know what to get when we went and the guy behind the counter said he'd have them make something fun for him. It was delicious! Definitely want to go back! The inside is super cute as well!

Yelp
Very unassuming building and eating area, but great service and great food! We ordered chips and queso (so good), a chicken quesadilla (so good) and two tacos, one chicken and one cactus! The cactus tasted like a bell pepper - I'm glad I tried it but will probably get two chicken tacos next time. It's cool that they offer cactus though. Everyone was nice and the service was also very fast.

Yelp
Locally owned - Comal 864 serves up traditional border cuisine from the owner's hometown of Brownsville, Texas. The modest menu allows the restaurant to focus on serving quality dishes to patrons. House made tortilla chips and salsa are the best in the Upstate and shouldn't be left off the order! The tacos are prepared traditionally with just onion, cilantro & optional cotija cheese. Follow them on social media for fun daily special announcements, karaoke nights, and more! Comal 864 is located just outside of downtown Greenville, with free & convenient parking on site.

Yelp
Seriously the best Mexican food in gvl. It's a local, women owned business. I'm left beyond satisfied every time I go.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place! We had the nachos with birria and birria quesitacos - yum! Really appreciate the effort that goes into the food here - love their house made tortillas! Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
We went to Comal 864 for the first time today after reading about its James Beard Award nomination. The quesadillas and Birria Quesitacos were so intense in flavor and fresh and amazing...we will be back!

Yelp
Just an update....We ordered Christmas tamales in December...the chicken and pork were so good. Dayna even threw in a bombbbb delicious salsa. We are still thinking about those tamales. Whew

Yelp
Everything about this place was great! The customer service was outstanding. The food was fresh and prepared when ordered. I loved the herbs and veggies they had growing in the front of the building as well as along the backside. Can't wait to go back to try something new!

Yelp
Great service and food. The flavors combined with the temperature of the food, was perfect. A new favorite for us.

Yelp
I've been following since I saw the nominations this year. This place did not disappoint. It's simple food, but it's so flavorful. They don't have much on the menu, but what is on it is done well and with attention to detail. The beef was flavorful and the consommé was delicious. I also had the Elotes. It was nice to see this done like it was back home and not with a stupid twist put on it. It's straightforward wonderful food! We will be back.

Yelp
My wife and I love to try new (to us) restaurants. Ventured out to give it a try. Busy inside and standing room only BUT quick turn over of tables so don't be intimidated. Chips and guacamole, chicken enchiladas, bistek quesadilla were all delicious and very fresh flavors. Friendly and hard working staff. Price point is spot on with $6.50 tacos up to $14 burritos. We will be back to try the breakfast burritos soon.

Yelp
Outstanding!! Can't say enough about this place or it's food! Don't let this one slip..it's small but damn the food is good! The service is great & the place is gonna have to get a second location or build a new place because they are growing! Great spot for a date or a double date.

Yelp
We've been hearing about this place & being from California; I'm always on the lookout for authentic Mexican food. I had the two tacos Al Pastor & they were perfection. Everyone in our party got something different & all of it was excellent. Service was friendly too. This place is a gem.

Joey G.

Yelp
First service was great very nice and easy going. Now the food well we are from San Antonio and this wasn't like home . All I did was close my eyes take a bit and I was home . Great food have had 4 things so far not a miss was told the dishes I ask about would come later . Can't wait Breakfast is next the only real Tex-mex that opens for breakfast Good luck best wishes be back soon nice to be close to home cooking again . Joey

Yelp
Dayna and her team at Comal are absolutely incredible! The food is always fantastic and the service is just lovely. I love how friendly they all are. It makes the place feel like home!

King D.

Yelp
Female owner was rude. Do not dine here The entitlement of one is surprising. I could not believe how I was treated. Is the customer not supposed to be the top priority? Do not come here if you are looking for a good dining experience. The husband owner was a nice guy though.

Yelp
REALLY GOOD family owned place. I highly recommend it. We'll definitely be back. Everything we had was crazy delicious!

Don W.

Yelp
Man, I was sooo excited to try Comal 864 after reading about the James Beard nomination. That's a big deal. Unfortunately, my experience fell way short of my expectations. Nice space and pleasant staff. I ordered the elote and it was pretty good, expected a bit more heat in it though. I ordered the birria ramen. Noodles were good and meat tasted fine but nothing in this dish spoke Southwest or Hispanic except for the cilantro. 3 folks at the table got the quesitacos and 2 of the 3 said the dipping consommé was really needed to give them flavor. I tasted one and agreed with the 2. On the big plus side, one of the only places I've found that offers Jarritos.

Shonna T.

Yelp
There wasn't anything wrong in particular- just didn't have much of a menu, very limited space and limited drinks. Service was fine.

Elisabeth K.

Yelp
Amazing! Delicious locally owned spot. the birria is amazing & so is the elote!! will come back very soon!!

carlos a g.

Yelp
Awesome food and wonderful service. Family friendly, homemade food and kind people. Recommend to anyone looking to support a local business.

Yelp
BEST TACOS IN GREENVILLE. I love this place so much! Try the bisteak with beans and rice. Absolutely perfect. My husband loves the bisteak burrito. Super friendly atmosphere.

Claudia H.

Yelp
