25 Best Restaurants on the San Francisco Peninsula | Eater SF

"Comalito is a Salvadoran restaurant with an exciting selection of pupusas, including shrimp, zucchini, loroco, and chicharron. The ajo y queso pupusa, made with roasted garlic and a mixture of cheese, is reminiscent of an extra garlicky pasta. Try the pastelitos, an empanada made with an achiote masa, and filled with ground beef, carrots, green beans, and potato." - Octavio Peña

Had a great time at Comalito! The pupusas were delicious and everything was flavored well and was crisp and fresh. We got complimentary tortilla fries, and ordered Yucca fries, Pastelitos, the salad, and 3 pupusas (Revuelta, Ajo y queso, and Jalapeno y queso). The ajo y queso was particularly delicious, and everything overall was great. The only minor piece of criticism I had was that overall, there could've been just a bit more cheese in the pupusas. For ~30 dollars, we had a full meal for 2 + leftovers, very reasonable! We wanted to get dessert but were so full by the end that we decided we would come back another time and order less to have room for it. Definitely looking forward to it!

Google
Stumbling upon this place made our night. If you have time and value good service, good people, and good vibes. Pull up! We had 4 different types of pupusas and a drink called “ensalada” - everything was an absolute banger. We will definitely be coming back.

Google
Delicious! The salad was fresh and beautifully presented. The pupusa was a thick corn tortilla oozing bean, pork, and cheese goodness. The service was welcoming and thoughtful. Comalito is a small establishment that takes pride in the quality of its menu offerings and presentation.

Google
This place is amazing!! It’s beautifully renovated and clean. Nice sit down restaurant with very good service. The pupusas are SO GOOD!!!! As are the complimentary appetizer, the fries on the menu, and the dessert! Can’t wait to go back and try them again!

Google
I just recently discovered this place and I’m so glad I did. The food is amazing, I ordered revuelta’s. Great food! I love the sauce they use. The inside is beautiful and I loved the neon sign. Would highly recommend!

Google
The restaurant is very clean, with a pleasant atmosphere and music at a comfortable volume. I was surprised with a complimentary starter of fried tortillas with refried beans that tasted fresh and high quality. The coffee was served with milk in an adorable and aesthetically pleasing presentation. The pupusas were incredibly delicious, bursting with flavor. The staff's attention was excellent. I believe it’s better to have a small menu with a well-executed selection of recipes than an extensive menu typical of chain restaurants, filled with frozen ingredients and bland dishes.

Google
If you like el Salvadorian food this place is for you. If you like South American food just stop in and enjoy. All the food is fresh and the flavors explode in your mouth. I've already been here twice and have plans to go back. Prices are extremely reasonable, especially given the quality of the food. Two drawbacks, the hours are short, hopefully they'll be extended as the restaurant closes at 7 and they don't have a liquor license yet, coming I'm told.

Google
Okay, if you are obsessed with pupusas, you have to come here. If you're not yet obsessed with pupusas, or you've never even heard of them, you have to come here. I love how simple their menu is, they don't try to do everything, they just do pupusas, and they are amazing!!! Please come out and support this new restaurant. The service is wonderful and the prices are very reasonable. Place is also very cute.

Yelp
Been back 3 more times! Every time I'm impressed with the quality of food and care put into preparation (everything always tastes freshly cooked, with good ingredients and just the right balance of seasonings) Churros were amazing, would highly recommend. Super freshly fried, not under seasoned, but also not overly sweet. chocolate, strawberries, and ice cream brings it all together. Whole fried fish special is not always available, but was undoubtedly awesome. The rice was cooked in some sort of broth to be tender, and then was fried up pilaf style, which was delicious. Also, the bathroom was very clean, nicely decorated, and even lightly perfumed with some scent sticks. Every time I come here, I leave looking forward to the next time I'll be back!

Yelp
Beautiful space in the part of Middlefield Road with tons of delicious Central American food. Street parking is hard to come by but there's a parking lot 2 blocks down if you need it. It's not particularly busy on the Sunday we showed up, but the space is small and there's always 2-3 tables occupied. We wanted some pupusas so we both opted for the breakfast pupusas with an egg and some extra chunky tomato sauce on top of it. While we waited, we also got yucca fries and bean dip on the house -- those are pretty tasty! And I got a horchata that is more nutty than the Mexican ones, which tasted familiar, like Taiwanese traditional nut milks. The pupusas came hot and crispy, and they are quite huge! I couldn't finish the 2 that I got, but they were quite tasty. I liked the one with meat a bit more than the garlic cheese one. Even though they aren't crispy anymore when I reheated them the next day, I feel the flavors got even better. All in all, it isn't mind blowing (there are other pupusa places I do love), but it's super comfortable to sit in and the service is nice. Would definitely come back again!

Yelp
Great spot for pupusas! They have several different types, from the traditional to the nuveau. We had the jalapeño, beans, and carnitas. They also have a really big selection of breakfast options as well. We didn't try those, but they looked great!!

Yelp
Ridiculously good and authentic tasting meaning not oily or too salty. Was a great comfort to walk by the kitchen and seeing all the tias making the food from scratch. I think I'll have to say this is the best Salvadoran food I've ever tasted! Must go back!

Yelp

Yelp
came across this hole in the wall in Redwood City & this is definitely a go-to spot if you're in the mood for pupusas. right off the bat, you'll notice that everything on the menu is priced fairly. each pupusa is only $4.50, despite which flavor you order (you can select from 9 different ones). my personal favorite was the Ajo, which was the most flavorful out of the ones we ordered! 2-3 pupusas was the perfect portion, which they recommend as well. the yuca fries & empanadas de leche dessert were also great, although the custard was a bit thick. the ambiance inside is nice & cozy; there is also no lot, only street parking.
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
The pupusas was really good. My favorite was the loroco and cheese pupusa, along with the curtido. The server was very friendly and brought us yuca fries to try. We also tried the empanadas which was very delicious. The downside was that we had to wait for a long time and they're not always open. I went once with my coworkers to eat for lunch and they were closed.

Yelp
I was in Redwood City and saw this place pop up as 'hot and new' so I decided to give it a try! Comalito specializes in all things pupusas! I ordered 3 different kinds, the queso, chicharron , revuelta (which is cheese, ground pork, and beans). All of these were made fresh to order, and you can tell by how piping hot they came out. The queso and revuelta were my favorites and with their curtido (fermented cabbage salad) to top it with, it was a solid meal. The best part, I ordered 3 pupusas and a can of coke, and my total was under $14 before tip. I was shocked because I didn't expect the meal to that inexpensive especially since the quality was so good. I think it's $3.25 per pupusa, so if you are looking for a quality, affordable meal, you might want to check out Comalito. Street parking was easy to find, but I saw a sign they have free parking around the corner from their restaurant.

Yelp
Was excited to try this new place. Store seemed really cute, and the prices for the pupusas and yucca fries were amazing. We ordered a pupusa, empanada and yucca fries to share, and thought we had ordered a special pupusa (carne asada), but turned out, that was actually a big piece of steak and not a pupusa, and it cost a lot more than the pupusa. Anyways, the food was all pretty tasty, but I had to dock off stars for a super super super long wait for food. Also, it wasn't clear from the special menu that the carne asada was not a steak pupusa, but actually a steak platter (though, this may be from me not being familiar with this cuisine). They handed out complimentary tortilla fries to the table, but the wait still was super long. One of the tables next to us ate the tortilla fries and just gave up on waiting to order, that they just left.

Yelp
Unfortunately, no longer open at lunch time on many days. Otherwise would visit more often.

Yelp
The pupusas and yuca fries were so tasty and not greasy at all! They also gave us fried masa with refried beans which was a great start to the meal. I tried the revuelta, frijol y queso, ajo y queso, and calabaza pupusas, all of which were outstanding. The service was pretty slow but we were a larger group so it's understandable. It was a little hard to find parking on a Friday at noon so you might need to walk a block or two.

Yelp
Came for dinner and were super happy we did! Party of 3. We had revueltas and calabazas pupusas, yucca fries, and 1 ensalada. The ensalada was packed with fruit and was amazing. The pupusas were loaded up and delicious, and the yucca fries were great. The server was super kind and attentive. Can't wait to come back and try more.

Yelp
This place is awesome. It's super nice inside, great design. The food was excellent. Instead of chips and salsa they give you these tortilla "fries" and bean dip which were delicious. I also had a bean + cheese pupusa which great. Everything tasted super fresh - the cortida was especially good. The service was lovely - very friendly - and the price is really affordable for lunch. The only thing I didn't love - and I know it's kind of weird - were the plates. I'm not sure what they were made of, but while they looked very pretty - they were kind of unpleasant when you were trying to cut your food. Definitely recommend the food though and will be back!

Yelp
So good! We had the empanadas, yuca fries, pupusas and horchata. The food tasted fresh and had lots of flavor. The service was excellent and very warm. The restaurant is clean and well decorated. They even had a cute tree up for Christmas. For three pupusas, an order of empanadas, and the yuca fries + an horchata and coke, it was only $35 so very affordable!

Clara S.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! My husband and I love supporting family businesses. We ordered the Pupusas and yuka fries, it was all really tasty. Service was great and everyone was very friendly, prices are fair, and the restaurant is also really cute. I couldnt recommend it more!

Yelp
Really really good. So glad to find this place. We were looking for authentico and we found it!

Yelp
We came in this past weekend because we were craving pupusas! We heard this place just opened up so we were very excited to try. The guy was very friendly at the counter and gave us good recs on what to order. The place itself also looked pretty cute and clean. We got the empanadas, yucca fries and 5 pupusas: 2 veggies and 3 meat kinds. The yucca fries were not the best because they werent starchy enough, but we really liked the empanadas! Also we thought all the meat pupusas (with beans, cheese and pork) were so good (warm, flavourful and fresh), but we forgot the name of it!! The meal came with some coleslaws and tomato dipping sauce. I LOVED the tomato sauce and smothered my pupusas in that. Would definitely come back again soon!

Yelp
Delicious! My son loves the pupusas and I love the empanadas! Their Yuka fries are delicious

Yelp
Food: Starting with complimentary tortilla slices with bean dip with cheese which was great! Our appetizers was yuca fries with two sauces a flavorful green sauce and the a spicy orange which was delicious. Followed by two pupusas revueltas with curtido and salsa that were amazing and had an ensalada drink which was refreshing and delicious as well. Ending with empanadas de leche that hit the spot not too sweet but made perfectly. Ambiance: Nice hole in the wall, a chill vibe, and I love the neon sign and plant decor around the restaurant. Service: Our waiter was super attentive and extremely kind! If you're looking for a delicious meal with a sweet treat and a fresh drink this's affordable, then this is your place. Staff was super sweet and the vibe made you feel right at home. Definitely recommending this place to friends and family alike and will be stopping by again, thank you!

Yelp
Full disclosure - ordered through Door dash - Ordered a variety of pupusas - total of 6 - though DoorDash and did not get any curtido to go along with the pupusas. I was not impressed. They seemed greasy and bland. But I think curtido really adds to pupusas. Will try them again.

Birdie N.

Yelp
Super modern decor with a relaxed vibe. We had such a great time eating here. Quality of papusas are comparable to the popular spots in SF. I'll be back for the nutty horchata. I'm looking forward to trying their brunch. Btw, when you leave the restaurant and make a right on evenings, there's a man on the corner selling homemade donuts with a cream filling - heard from the neighborhood people that they're really delicious.

Alexis L.

Yelp
Nice little place, simple menu but delicious. Had the pastelitos, platanos, and a few different pupusas. I thought the pastelitos/empanadas could have had more flavor but everything else was excellent. I really liked the zucchini and husband liked revuelto pupusa. Complimentary chip strips with refried beans were really good too! Parking was a little difficult but not too bad. Friendly quick service. Will definitely be back to try the other types of pupusas!
google avatar

Leticia G.

Yelp
Best pupusas around! they are delicious and have the full variety. the place is super cute and has great atmosphere. They also have a variety of tasty South American tapas: yuca, plantains and more. churros for dessert and delicious fresh tamarind juice. I love it!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a little gem. The food was sooooo tasty and very reasonably priced for how good it was. We had the chicken pupusa which was very well balanced of cheese and meat. The breakfast chilaquiles were awesome and their beans are super good. Service was prompt and they were very sweet. They made sure to answer any questions we had about the menu. Cute spot for a lunch or dinner date. Background music was great. Highly recommend this place. Saw a lot of take out orders happening so highly recommend to take out if you can't stay- you have to at least try this place.

Yelp
My new go to pupusa spot!! These pupusas remind me of the pupusas my Tia makes for our family. I promise you won't be disappointed. The workers are Redwood City natives so they've been here through all the changes that has happened. They remember Amelia's in Redwood City Downtown and their agua de fruta is the closest thing to Amelia's. We love to support local business and local neighborhoods! Service is great. They always ensure you're okay without pushing it. Place is super clean and I remember sharing to my mom how nice their bathroom is. It smelled great and was clean. It hits you as you walk in. That's not common in restaurants. 10/10 experience.

Mike H.

Yelp
Some of the best Salvadoran food I've had outside of El Salvador. The food is made fresh and is tasty. I truly enjoyed the Plantano Frito. One of my favorite dishes. The restaurant was clean and fresh. The bathroom was clean and in working order. The staff was great. We were welcomed when we entered and allowed to enjoy our meal with minimal interruptions. Definitely will be returning to Comalito.

Alexander J.

Yelp
I have always had a love hate relationship with Pupusas. I have nothing but love for the pupusas here, which on the breakfast menu come smothered in sunnyside up eggs with perfectly runny yolks and salsa. My daughter loved the plantains, hot chocolate (with milk of course, though you can get it with water) and fried tortilla, ambiance and service were excellent. Looking forward to coming back.

Liliana G.

Yelp
es primera vez que fuimos con mi mamá y yo dan una buen servicio es un lugar agradable el ambiente está agradable

Yelp
This place is just great . Came here for the first time on a whim and was REALLY impressed with everything . Is it a Michelin star restaurant, of course not but what you get in terms of food, service and ambiance at a great price is pretty unmatched. We just wanted a place to have an afternoon snack and a colleague mentioned this place to me so we went on a rainy Sunday afternoon . We started with the Yucca fries which were really nice , crisp but a bit soft in the middle and served with a really nice little dipping sauce. They also gave us these complimentary tortilla fries which I had never even heard of but they were spectacular. It was just perfectly fried sticks of masa with a small dish of refried beans and cojita cheese to dip into and it was REALLY good. Other than that they had a nice selection of pupusas served with the traditional sides that were really nicely done . Had an order of churros to finish it off and it was a great little meal and we got out of there for under $40, how is this possible especially in the peninsula ? The place was clean , a bit modern and had lively music playing (which they probably could've turned down a notch ) but whatever. Will definitely be going back !
google avatar

Sonal P.

Yelp
one word - INCREDIBLE! So fresh, great flavors and spot on pricing. Hubby got takeout on a whim this afternoon but so glad he found this place. We loved Martin's located at this spot previously, so I truly hope this new restaurant does well! We ordered five different pupusas and each one was better than the last! The beef pastelitos (or empanadas) were delish, as were the yuca fries! Found our spot!

Yelp
When we first saw the menu it was such a green flag! The menu stuck to authentic Salvadoran dishes something you don't see often. The service was very nice and quick to seat us and serve drinks. The restaurant was VERY clean and they had it decorated for holiday which felt random but cute. The food came out relatively quickly which was nice and we got a complementary side which was so sweet! The pupsas were good, not overly greasy and had a good distribution of topping on the inside. I would have like them to be a little more cooked around the edges but I should have asked for that beforehand. Also the bean are very different to the other pupsas where the beans are a little more watery/runny. I think we'd prefer a more thicker bean but these we good as well! Lastly for the pastelitos. The dough a good as well as the meat but there was not an even distribution meat and a veggies. It was mostly meat. Still tasted very good but would have appreciated more flavor from the veggies. The curtido and salsa were perfect! We will definitely be going again

S M.

Yelp
My friends and I came for lunch and we loved it! The food came out fast, it was delicious, prices were reasonable and we enjoyed the music in the background! On top of all that, the staff was attentive and friendly! We highly recommend this restaurant. We'll definitely be coming back!

Yansi R.

Yelp
Excellent food and ambiance! Menu covers key salvadorean treats: pupusas, yuca frita, empanadas y pastelitos! The curtido (pickled cabbage) and salsa were very good. We are from El Salvador and my mom is quite picky and she approved all the dishes. All the ingredients are very fresh, the yuca and pastelitos were crunchy and the service was excellent. I'll gladly return any time I'm in the area. Excelentes pupusas, pastelitos, empanadas y yuca. El menu es pequeño, pero hay suficiente variedad y la comida estaba muy sabrosa. La mesera muy atenta y pendiente si necesitabamos algo mas.

Christian B.

Yelp
Food, service and ambiance are great. I ordered the pastelitos, yuca fries, and a range of papusas. Everything was delicious. I'll be back!
google avatar

Ryan N.

Yelp
One of the best pupuseria's in town. Really fresh ingredients, and a really nice and clean interior. Not on the menu, but ask about the fried tortillas and beans...sounds regular, but they were phenomenal.
google avatar

Max D.

Yelp
Great pupusas honestly. Super nice service and easy to order. Priced very fairly. I would recommend anyone to make a stop at this place.

Ana C.

Yelp
Delicioso! Finally Best Empanadas, Pastelitos, Horchata Salvadoreña. Everything on point. very Welcoming staff with a SMILE thats a PLUS!!! Great ambiance. Of course Pupusas were Good too!! Everything about the place was cute & cozy!! Totally recommend this place y el que sabe sabe!!

Michelle L.

Yelp
Such a cute place with the nicest service ever! You can tell that they opened this restaurant with heart and a true passion for bringing authentic Salvadoran cuisine to the bay. Everything was so good and my Salvadorian friend approved! The only thing we wanted to suggest is flavoring/salting the masa more and more filling and cheese in the pupusas. Also use the beans that were with the tortillas for the pupusas rather than the pinto ones! I hate to be picky but it's so close to being perfect! The pupusas are not greasy which is hard to do! Overall, please go visit them and enjoy the lovely vibes and keep this place here for a long time!
google avatar

Linda L.

Yelp
My husband and I loved the deep fried tortilla pieces/beans, serene, high-end interior space, plus our cheerful server...BUT the Pupusas, red sauce and Cortito were basically bland and tasteless I'm sorry to report! This really was a let down and we are hardcore Pupusa lovers and have had many 'good ones' in the San Jose area! Also our perky waitress was talking quite a long time with a customer and 'forgot' the cortito and red sauce...which should have been brought out with our main course on a tray! She had to bring small metal plates with the main order, which were heavy and possibly could not carry it all up at once. We were left pupusas only, waiting a good 10 minutes while she rang up a customer and chatted instead of her asking him to wait a few minutes, while she completed our table order. The dining service started so well, then went downhill quickly. Everything was reasonable priced for such a new and cute establishment. Please work on a few things to bring the flavors out and handle one order at a time as to not interrupt serving patrons their full meal.

Carlos A.

Yelp
Service was amazing. I recommend the platanos fritos and the big plate that's they offer.
google avatar

Erikah B.

Yelp
Food was very delicious authentic, made with fresh ingredients. Staff was very friendly and the restaurant seemed very clean and taken care of. I ordered pupusas for me and my family and it was everyone's favorite. I look forward to coming back soon.
google avatar

Edsel R.

Yelp
Had the yucca fries and the cheese and bean papusa and was pleasantly surprised how fresh and amazing they tasted you could really taste the love put into the papusa. Will definitely be a go to spot for getting a papusa fix.
google avatar

Raquel J.

Yelp
Lindo el lugar.. recomendado 100 por ciento.. y la horchata deliciosa muy refrescante!

Cynthia Y.

Yelp
Great food, service and nice decor! We stopped in for a weekday lunch and had fried plantains which are served with their delicious refried beans, sour cream and toast. We had the pork pupusa and the zucchini pupusa. Both were very good with their accompanying sauce and pickled veggies. They gave us a complimentary appetizer of fried thick tortilla strips to dip into refried beans. Absolutely addictive! The tamarindo drink is delicious also. We'll be back!
google avatar

Matt W.

Yelp
So good! Got one of each pupusa, empanadas, some horchata to wash it all down. We had a great time and everyone was so nice. The inside is nice and welcoming. Seems like I found my new spot when I get the craving to eat a million pupusa.

Kenzie S.

Yelp
I had the beans and cheese pupusa and it was amazing! The yuca fries and casamiento were also very delicious. I don't like my pupusas too fried/greasy and these were just right. All the workers were very nice and the indoors was decorated very cute for Valentine's Day. Las mejores pupusas en la bahía!

Stephany C.

Yelp
The food was BOMB! I had the yucca fries and I would literally buy a bottle of the orange sauce. The pupusa was so good I had to start eating it before getting a good pic. Great, inexpensive neighborhood spot.

Yelp
We loved everything. Food is made fresh to order, the staff is very nice and the place is super inviting and clean. We will be back!!
