"Yu Ozone’s charming Japanese cafe, a worthy stop on Newtown’s Vegan Mile, truly caters to every dietary restriction. The acclaimed onigiri, katsu curry, celebratory mochi, and sweet potato donuts contain zero traces of gluten, dairy, or other animal products. Take advantage of the new dinnertime hours to try the slurpable yuzu-flavored noodles." - Lee Tran Lam

"Yu Ozone developed the menu at her Japanese cafe in response to her own allergies, and everything, including the eggplant teriyaki sushi rolls and the sweet potato doughnuts, is vegan and gluten-free. She took six years to develop an eggless, wheatless tempura batter, which she now showcases in her lunch set of crisp vegetables seasoned with matcha salt. Comeco Foods is part of Newtown’s vegan mile, which is dotted with meat-free eateries, such as Khamsa (Sydney’s only Palestinian cafe), Le Gourmand (a plant-based patisserie), La Petite Fauxmagerie (a dairy-free cheesemonger), and Vandal (a vegan taqueria)." - Lee Tran Lam

I had the pleasure of visiting Comeco Foods, and it truly felt like a mini-escape to Kyoto. The entirely gluten-free and vegan menu was a delightful surprise. The dishes were remarkably authentic and bursting with flavor. The emphasis on healthy, gut-friendly food was evident, and the pickled vegetables were a lovely touch. However, the wait times were a notable drawback. There seemed to be a disjointed workflow in the kitchen, with dishes being prepared and delivered to tables in a manner that caused delays. My sister finished her dish before mine arrived. Focusing on one table at a time would greatly improve efficiency and allow customers to finish their meals in a timely manner. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and will definitely return. The vegan donuts were an absolute highlight – divine! Overall, Comeco Foods offers a unique and delicious dining experience that's well worth a visit.

I've discovered a hidden gem in Newtown that's revolutionizing Japanese cuisine! This innovative eatery offers a completely vegan and plant-based menu, cleverly catering to all dietary needs and allergies. The food is exceptional, with dishes that are both familiar and excitingly new. Standouts include the sublime sweet potato donuts and my phenomenal plate of veggies, mushrooms, and sushi – every bite was pure bliss. The staff are warm and welcoming, adding to the delightful experience. A unique touch is their matcha salt, which pairs surprisingly well with everything from noodles to sushi and desserts. With a diverse menu spanning noodles, matcha, sushi, and decadent desserts, there's something for everyone. Don't miss this incredible spot – I highly recommend it!

The most delicious vegan Japanese food I have ever had, and it is gluten free and so clean and wholesome. Flavour bomb and varied sushi that isn’t just avocado and cucumber that is delicate, fresh, balanced and lovingly prepared. The katsu curry and karage is so moreish, the sweet potato brownies and sourdough donuts are wonderful. What really brings this all together is the absolutely beautiful team. We found this gem before they opened their shopfront during Covid-19 and from the beginning we saw their commitment to quality, service and the kindness with which they treat the community. So grateful to have them in Newtown now with a place of their own to satisfy our cravings. Thanks to Yu, Masa and the team for consistently amazing food and the big welcome when we are there. What tops it off is that our non vegan family and friends love their food too.

One of the best matcha spots in Sydney! They don’t offer oat or dairy milk, but they do serve their matcha with soy or macadamia milk, which is a nice alternative. I also tried the tempura noodle bowl – it was good, though the dashi broth started to feel a bit one-dimensional and I got tired of the flavor after a while. The mochi donuts were a nice treat! I tried both the kinako and cinnamon sugar flavors, but the cinnamon was definitely the better of the two. The kinako flavor was too subtle, which was a bit disappointing. For a regular matcha, one donut, and a noodle bowl, it came to around $41. Keep in mind they charge 10% extra on weekends and there’s a 1.5% card surcharge. Overall, I’d love to return for the matcha! The service is also efficient but it’s odd that when asked, I was told by the cashier that they don’t provide receipts for cash payments…

2/11/24 - 4 stars !This is a 100% vegan café! Was recommended this café as a top Japanese brunch spot and it certainly does draw a crowd. Staff definitely give you the full Japanese hospitality and the interior, whilst a bit cramped, is cosy. Came for mochi which unfortunately wasn't available, but, the donuts and matcha were very good. Overall, a cute café with a unique menu and nice vibe but pretty expensive. Sourdough donuts Texture: SS, 9/10. Fluffy yet crisp on the outside and tearable. Excellent. Yuzu custard: A, 7/10. Didn't really taste much yuzu? Apple cinnamon: S, 8/10. Tasty but would have liked a bit more apple flavour. Would also mention for both that there was too much icing sugar which made it less enjoyable. Value: B, 6/10. $7-8 each is steep Iced matcha latte Flavour: S+, 8.5/10. Not the richest but still captured the tea flavour well. Soy milk as a base works well Texture: SS, 9/10. Smooth and creamy. One of the better ones Value: B, 6/10. $8

I trek across town on a near weekly basis to eat here. The doughnuts and onigiri are enough of a treat, truly delicious and so reassuring that all the food is completely safe for vegan and gluten free (also low FODMAP). The team are always try new things and featuring different specials - the new ramen is really good, the sushi is delicious, and the mochi and daifuku are divine if you’re lucky enough to snap them up! You can also grab a few great pantry essentials like miso, stock concentrate, matcha etc. This spot has a real cult following for a reason - check their insta for specials and get here early!

One my fav places to eat in the whole of Sydney!! I love coming here as the food is incredible! So delicious and wholesome, I’m very fond of the tempura curry bowl but a fan of the onigiri plate as well - yum! Their mochi whenever it’s available is an absolute must! I was instantly transported to the streets of Kyoto when I had it :)
