Their Chinese Chicken Salad is overrated.
There, I said it.
Listen, it was *mildly* tasty because of the dressing, but this salad people seem to rave about... it's lackluster. I'm sorry, but it's true.
The good: the dressing has nice flavor, but combining rice vinegar, sesame oil, and sugar will do that. It's mostly safflower oil, which I'm lukewarm on as a quality ingredient.
The meh: the chicken is cut into weird tiny pieces, and is such a minimal portion... the salad lacks layers of texture and flavor to me. It needs more to it - some cilantro, maybe more peanuts that have been honey roasted or something... some thinly sliced snap peas or sugar snaps... it's just not that great.
It's shredded lettuce and cabbage maybe? With some of those white rice noodles and then a few chopped peanuts and a scant serving of chicken. Just no. I'm left scratching my head.
It's fair to say that moving from SF to the burbs has left me shrugging when folks tell me a restaurant in Marin is "good." Compared to what? Maybe good just to not have to cook it yourself, but as someone who cooks A LOT, this is a pass for me, I'm making a better version at home for dinner tonight.
The lemon bar was tasty but WAY too sweet. I'm a frequent lemon bar eater, and it just needs to be toned down.
I tried their fresh spring rolls another time, and they're served with a sweet chili sauce instead of a peanut sauce which should be a crime. The entire purpose of eating fresh spring rolls is to eat peanut sauce! Sigh.
Two stars are because they do seem to have some other nice takeaway options that I might try sometime (dare I?) and they sell a delicious passion fruit agua fresca that was a good find!
