Best Restaurants in Marin County | Eater SF

"Marin is beloved for its oysters but another dish, Chinese chicken salad, similarly helps define the cuisine scene. On the menu since Comforts opened in 1986, with the recipe credited to owner Glenn Miwa’s mom, Comforts’s salad is Marin’s ultimate comfort food. Equal parts sit down café and takeout counter, the restaurant balances Asian and Western flavors (think panko-crusted tacos, and salmon with farro, cranberries, and squash) that prove irresistible to the community." - Christina Mueller

Comforts in San Anselmo truly lives up to its name! The Stuffed Pecan-Crusted French Toast is an absolute showstopper…cinnamon challah, perfectly crusted with pecans, filled with sweetened cream cheese, topped with fresh berries, and served with pure maple syrup. Each bite is a heavenly combination of crunch, sweetness, and creaminess. This dish is an unparalleled treasure and an absolute must-try! I also ventured into the breakfast enchiladas, which added a fun and flavorful twist to my morning. The creative and delicious menu, coupled with friendly service and a cozy atmosphere, guarantees a memorable dining experience. Whether you're a local or just passing through, Comforts is a must-visit for comfort food that exceeds expectations!

Google
Really fresh, easy, allergy-friendly food. I had a great bowl with bean, quinoa, greens, and a poached egg. It’s an order at the counter, very chill place. Lots of sun, indoor/outdoor seating, and space.

Google
Such a yummy and delicious spot. Plenty of healthy options and gluten free options for almost anything you want.

Google
Been going here for the past two years and this has become my local brunch favorite. Always plan for the sweet and savory as they regularly change up their menu with traditional favorites plus new additions. The service is exceptional and it seems like they always have a seat available. If it sounds good to you, please try their pecan stuffed French toast, you will not be disappointed.

Google
Best Chinese chicken salad! Also great pastries and Arnold Palmer. Our favorite weekend brunch spot. Get it to go and sit in the parks nearby.

Google
Whenever I visit San Francisco, I ALWAYS go to Comforts for THE best Chinese Chicken salad on planet earth. In 40 years I have never even tried anything else on their menu other than the scrumptious desserts. 🥴😊😊

Google
I come here for their famous Chinese Chicken Salad but their baked goods are also bomb! Everytime I try something else it is of high quality and delicious. I do to-go...the seating situation is not always great and it does get crowded inside since it's a small place.

Google
This renowned eatery in San Anselmo is famed for its Chinese chicken salad, a favorite in Marin County. My wife and I recently explored their lunch offerings and were thoroughly impressed. The vibrancy and freshness of my salad, comprising crisp romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, raisins, assorted nuts, cheeses, and pecans, truly stood out. The service was impeccable, with our attentive waiter ensuring our satisfaction. The efficiency and happiness of the staff clearly indicate commendable management. And for those with a sweet tooth, their display of unique cookies and chocolates is a treat – speaking as a self-proclaimed chocolate enthusiast named Kevin! If you're in search of a top-notch dining experience, whether with family, for business, or with friends, give Comforts a try!

Yelp
Good food, considerate service, lively atmosphere. The hamburger was of the best we've had since the pandemic. .

Yelp
Fried Chicken was really delicious! In fact everything I had here has been really fresh and delicious ! Super amazing service and lots of options ! Parking is street parking and they have indoor and outdoor seating ! Yummy food and ambiance is really chill. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Classic. I was here 40(?) years ago when their infamous Chinese chicken salad came in the scene. My grandma brought me. It may have been the first time I realized salad could be delicious enough to be the first choice for a meal Came today because we were in the area and felt like salad. Nostalgia aside, and now that I'm a "foodie" and used to awesome salads , I can say the salad is still great. It has a good balance of almonds and chicken taste and the chicken is cut about the same size as the nuts. I'd like some cabbage added for health. But yeah, a good salad Bathroom grade: A. 2 single serve rooms. Clean and bright with nice smelling soap

Yelp
One of my favorite parts of this shop/restaurant is the location!!! Down town San Anselmo is soo charming. Perfect for exploring and then stopping at comforts for a bite. We got the Chinese chicken salad as raved about on the internet (disclaimer: I don't love Chinese chicken salads I think they are good but like other salads better) BUT it was a really good chicken salad! The stand out dish is the French toast!! Pecan crusted and filled with some delicious custard! This made the meal worth it! They only serve breakfast until 12 btw! So crunchy and delicious. Service was fine. Nothing stand out but not a bad experience. We are outside and it was lovely. Indoor and outdoor options. Definitely will come back for the French toast!

Yelp
I love this restaurant! My go to brunch place and it is reasonably priced. I love my French toast and their's is my favorite in all of Marin, keep in mind they only sell until 11am and then their lunch menu. The French toast is nice and fluffy with a pecan glaze and pecan pecan pieces, I love my pecans! The plate is worth ~$18 and a couple could comfortably eat for $40-50. They also cut a part for to go food if you dont want to stay long and it's really convenient, just take number and they will call you and you order.

Yelp
Had lunch with a friend and brought home a bunch of sweet treats for the family. The rosemary chicken sandwich was wonderful- love the light airiness of the toasted sourdough. Solid sandwich - I'd come for lunch again The pastries however were a big let down. Not sure we would do pastries here. Apricot bar- had chopped diced firm dried apricots. In theory this may sound good, but the chunks of firm tart apricots was not to our liking. Wish they had reconstituted them or did a quick cook / breakdown for something soft and maybe sweeter. The oatmeal base - delicious. The raspberry strudel - looked amazing but the filling was made with frozen, bland berries. Hubby thought the topping was good. But this is going in the bin. Perhaps holding off on this variation until fruit is in season. Carmel bar - if you're craving Carmel - this is that!! Lots of Carmel on a shortbread crust. So rich we cut into quarters - not sure we would do this again personally. But if you love Carmel you should try. Coffee cake- was moist nice flavor and we enjoyed the following morning with our lattes. Total bill $47

Yelp
The food was awesomely dying in the dining room. The new remodel is amazing. Service was perfect. I only have one complaint. They have these fancy salt and pepper shakers on the table and it is so gross dirty. I don't even wanna touch it on the table next to me.

Yelp
This was my first time coming to this particular restaurant and OMG it was so cute and quaint!! My brother and sister-in-law came here and said they have really good brunch and Boy where they right!! A lot of people were getting takeout items and apparently their construction/remodel just started the day before we arrived. Everything looked a little chaotic, but I guess they were pretty busy for a Sunday. I saw a number of customers walk by and then come back and ask if they were even open. After their response they were seated or got takeout! Lol I felt kind of bad for the employees working in such hard conditions, but they seemed to have everything pretty well organized even though they're walkway is a bit shorter and there's construction/plywood up all over the place as well as plastic tarps sectioning offered in areas. Lol we sat outside with our puppies and we were able to be seated and ordered/received our food within 10 minutes! I was actually a bit worried since I ordered the French toast and there was a sign on the menu stating it might take 15 minutes to make. I was very impressed with how speedy the service was!! I also wanted to order an iced coffee, but didn't get a chance to since the server seemed a little busy as well as the host who was trying to seat people and make sure the takeout customers were able to go inside to get their takeout, as well as dine in customers could get pastries from the takeout counter which was on the other side. It seemed as if they had two different registers inside, but maybe just getting into the swing of things or the new swing of temporary remodeling things caught the employees offguard? Nevertheless, I would love to go back to the place again and try more of their items since we loved the, fish tacos and the pecan crusted stuffed French toast!

Yelp
Always get the Iconic Chinese chicken salads They are delicious and you can even get them with a light dressing if you'd like. Citrusy and perfect for a summers get together.

Yelp
Good place for healthy options good and large menu, they have a variety of salads and other dishes my favorite is the asian chicken salad. Staff is always very nice and fast but if you visit go with time because is always crowded, they are just amazing. Outside they have always tables but sometimes is super full. I love this place.

Yelp
Delicious Chinese Chicken Salad! Definitely have a pretty penny ready for it though. French toast tastes amazing! Service of the place is great; our waitress was very friendly. Parking is not very easy, but it's doable. I recommend trying this place once!

Yelp
Comforts is the very best of Marin Take out. Owned by Husband and wife and managed by their daughter, it's literally an institution! We love the staff and how they change their breakfast menu often. We will always support Comforts! It's the best!
google avatar

Yelp
They are rightfully known for the best Chinese Chicken Salad in existence. I have liked every thing I have had here, Chicken Okasan, Korean Flank Steak, cowboy bars, to name a few. The remodel is gorgeous. The outdoor seating is perfect for Marin weather usually and street parking is relatively easy.

Yelp
My friend's parents use to order the Chinese Chicken Salad here, which I hear is the BEST! I have tried it and it IS good! Recently, I met up with a friend and stopped for brunch here. We got there at 10:30am and was able to get seated quickly. Had we waited another 1-1.5hrs, there would've been a wait. They have a good amount of seating inside and out. Place is clean and lively. Bakery area on one side; seating on the other. The service was ok. Our waitress took my friend's drink order and didn't even bother to ask me what I wanted and was about to walk away until my friend told her to wait. She would check up on us; but she didn't stop to ask, it was in passing. However, I noticed she was the only person waiting on all the tables outside. I feel for the workers (esp after the pandemic); so overall, she was great for the number of tables she had to wait on! The food was great. I had the mushroom and polenta with my eggs sunny side up. This was SO good and filling. I'd order this again next time I come back! Also, I had a vanilla latte w/soy milk. It was good but not as great as the coffee roastery just a few blocks down. Overall, I would definitely come back here again. I wanted to try their scones as I heard it's the best; but, I was so full that I had to pass on it.

Yelp
A couple times a month we come to this lovely place for breakfast on Sunday's. The service is fantastic and the place is cozy. You definitely have to grab their Chinese chicken salad.!!

Stephanie B.

Yelp
Food: counter food is delicious, restaurant food is just OK. Service: counter service is consistently snarky, slow, and confusing. Table service is consistently delightful. So it's a tale of opposites. Not a lot of other options in town, so sometimes the trade-off is worth it!

Yelp
Back again for another amazing meal! The service is great. Our waiter was also our waiter at madcap the other night so it was fun to see a familiar face. Comforts is so special because they change out their menu often. My boyfriend got the short rib loco moco and I got the stuffed hash-browns. And we split the lemon blueberry pancake. And got mimosas. Everything was amazing. The remodel is also very well done!

Yelp
I absolutely love Comforts! My most favorite item in their menu which I will never get tired having is their "Chicken Okasan." Generous serving of favorful chicken breasts, coated with panko batter, drizzled with some sesame seeds, then flash fried. When you cut into it, this tasty teriyaki sauce oozes out. Chicken Okasan is served with delicious rice and the tastiest sautéed vegetables. I usually ask for no rice, extra vegetables and a side order of 1 plain buttermilk pancake. I have been going to Comforts for many years now and I don't see myself getting tired of it. Apart from the many, many scrumptious items in their menu, service is friendly, warm and efficient! Comforts is also known for their legendary "Chinese Chicken Salad."
google avatar

Veda F.

Yelp
The local Red Cross center ordered two giant pans of Comfort's lasagna. Ooh, so, good!!! Each pan served over 15 people and there was plenty to take home as well. The traditional meat lasagna had to die for creamy sauce and tons of meat for any meat lover to enjoy. The meatless or veggie lasagna had everyone raving over it. I planned to go back and try it but my tummy was full with the corner toasty piece of traditional lasagna. This is a great place to cater large events. We order both lasagnas on separate orders and with the busy holiday both items were not ready for pick up at the same time. Be sure to call in advance for your order to be ready for pick up.

Yelp
I was in the area and a friend of mine recommended this place for lunch, specifically the Chinese Chicken Salad. Turned out to be a great suggestion! This was by far the best one I've had. Not only was it delicious but it was also a very generous serving. There was chicken and almond slivers in every bite. The iced tea was also really tasty. Not only are you served a glass but also an additional small carafe. I wish I lived closer.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is excellent whether you're taking out or eating in. Their iconic Chinese chicken salad is delicious easy consistent, and usually sold out by the end of the day. I've been coming to Comforts for over 20 years and it's a personal favorite

Yelp
I saw this place featured on a Tik Tok and bookmarked it immediately for their "famous" Asian Chicken salad. We chose to enjoy it in the dining room. The star of the show here was a molasses corny bread that came to the table with butter, I asked if it was baked in-house and they said no, as I was about to buy a loaf to go!. We ordered the Asian chicken salad and some french fries to split. The portion of fries was humongous and I gotta say they were salted perfectly. The salad was good, but for my money the absolute best Asian chicken salad is Wolfgang Puck's Chinois Salad - his dressing has a bit of heat from hot mustard and includes those crispy bits of fried wonton wrapper. The salad here was well-chopped, and included almonds for crunch. Definitely delicious, but not worth the drive from San Francisco. We did also get a lemon bar to go, which was huge and tasty.

Mepa R.

Yelp
Yummy food. Had the Chinese tofu salad, eggs florentine, pecan crusted French toast, orange juice, coffees in the cafe and a fruit and nut bar from the retail side. The waitstaff is friendly. The display of food on the retail side is drool worthy! There was a significant wait being Sunday at 1 pm.

Katherine K.

Yelp
Wildly disappointing. I have heard about comforts for years and although I know the food quality is pretty low and the prices are on the level of organics and very very few items are organic a pal wanted to go today and I agreed. I thought one time won't hurt plus who knows maybe ill find a dish I like and have another place to go eat in Marin.... We waited to be seated while servers walked by neither acknowledging us nor letting us know someone might be coming. We were finally seated and then had to go find a server to take our order and then waited one hour for our food. Part of order were forgotten and various other issues arose but the worst part was that when one of us would get up to go look for someone it was like a daycare without and adult. Its like one more obnoxious example of how folks in Marin have been taught. like frogs in hot water, to just adapt to subpar service / top tier prices and not much to show for it and a fear If we name it we are bad people. I grew up here and I call it for what it is....annoying and pervasive. I miss hospitality and would like for the prices being charged that someone consider it fair to actually teach their servers the basics of the business of restaurants which includes that those in the seats are signing up to pay huge mark ups and in return you care about their experience and you work to make easy and maybe even enjoyable not a giant hassle.
google avatar

Yelp
If you look at my photos it probably goes without saying that I think the Comforts Chinese Tofu Salad is basically humankind's greatest invention, which is not a superlative. I'd give it 100 stars out of 5 if I could. Their offering the tofu version without needing to ask for a substitution is awesome, on top of which the tofu is richly flavorful--several omnivorous friends have said they prefer it to its chicken counterpart. The dressing is light but perfectly coats the fixings. Furthermore the staff is friendly without fail and the main drag of San Anselmo is perfect for eating outdoors. I drive out of way several times a week for this lunch and I suggest you try the same.

Jack C.

Yelp
ordered : Farmers Breakfast : some of the best chicken sausage i have ever had. pancake was also fantastic. eggs were just eggs at the end of the day, but it tasted like they are cooked in butter which does add a nice silkiness. the fruit was also a welcome addition. adds some nice freshness. would absolutely order again.
google avatar

Alan R.

Yelp
Definitely a main state of San Anselmo culture. Lots of good bites. Great drinks, marginal with regard to gluten-free options. Great seating inside and out gets very crowded on the weekends. Plan on waiting for a table in this year.

Nejad H.

Yelp
Very cute resturant with amazing service and food. Waited about 20 minutes for our table on Saturday but was well worth it. Definitely recommend.

Marc B.

Yelp
Chicken Okasan is now served warm in an enclosed container! Do you guys realize what that does to the coating? Yes, it becomes soggy instead of the crispy product that contributed to your success! I use to come in frequently but the quality of the food has taken a definite dive and the service is down right pitiful provided by folk who are clearly not enjoying their job. Add to that a very major price increase and what do you get? I miss this place when it was neighborhood oriented with friendly service, rather than the supermarket feel customers are getting now...

J L.

Yelp
When we first visited this place we didn't get the hype but maybe it was just an off day since on our many subsequent visits the food has been very good. The chicken or tofu salads and the chicken okasan are favorites.
google avatar

D21Marin G.

Yelp
If your a snob then this is your place. Price doesn't matter if you say it's organic and gluten free local. Prepare for good freshly made food that will cost you.
google avatar

Diane S.

Yelp
Their Chinese Chicken Salad is overrated. There, I said it. Listen, it was *mildly* tasty because of the dressing, but this salad people seem to rave about... it's lackluster. I'm sorry, but it's true. The good: the dressing has nice flavor, but combining rice vinegar, sesame oil, and sugar will do that. It's mostly safflower oil, which I'm lukewarm on as a quality ingredient. The meh: the chicken is cut into weird tiny pieces, and is such a minimal portion... the salad lacks layers of texture and flavor to me. It needs more to it - some cilantro, maybe more peanuts that have been honey roasted or something... some thinly sliced snap peas or sugar snaps... it's just not that great. It's shredded lettuce and cabbage maybe? With some of those white rice noodles and then a few chopped peanuts and a scant serving of chicken. Just no. I'm left scratching my head. It's fair to say that moving from SF to the burbs has left me shrugging when folks tell me a restaurant in Marin is "good." Compared to what? Maybe good just to not have to cook it yourself, but as someone who cooks A LOT, this is a pass for me, I'm making a better version at home for dinner tonight. The lemon bar was tasty but WAY too sweet. I'm a frequent lemon bar eater, and it just needs to be toned down. I tried their fresh spring rolls another time, and they're served with a sweet chili sauce instead of a peanut sauce which should be a crime. The entire purpose of eating fresh spring rolls is to eat peanut sauce! Sigh. Two stars are because they do seem to have some other nice takeaway options that I might try sometime (dare I?) and they sell a delicious passion fruit agua fresca that was a good find!

Anne H.

Yelp
I will preface my comments by sharing that my intention is to provide constructive feedback. My experience with Comforts this past weekend was extremely chaotic and unfriendly. The new system of taking a number for service was inefficient and confusing to all of the customers. The people working were very surly, short, and seemed unhappy to be working there. Many frustrated customers were complaining, and the flow of ordering, paying, etc was not working well. I hope that someone that is in charge will read this and look into improving matters. Thank you.
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
Great experience with their carry out food. My birthday picnic hosted by my GF's included Chinese chicken salads by comforts. SO incredibly good!!! Thank you! !

Scott J.

Yelp
Ordered a mini vanilla cupcake. It strongly tasted like mint. Mislabeled? I don't get it. If it's mint, maybe call it mint? Chocolate cake was tasty. Lemon chocolate chip cookie is just an odd flavor combo. Nice place, clean, big selection. Choose something that has very few items leftover so you'll know it's a popular item.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
Yeah, this is one of those places people laud about but the food is actually lackluster, is overpriced and the service is abysmal. I live nearby and have given them several tries. Every time I've gone, the staff has made me feel like they were doing me a great favor charging me insane prices for mediocre (at best) food. I'd pass if I were you.
google avatar

Mramuto A.

Yelp
Hmmmmm.... I have a mixed feeling about this place. This review is strictly based on "take out" experience. The menu posted on the door looked petty good so I decided to give a try. Inside, there are deli counter, restaurants and desserts counter. Items posted at the entrance door can be placed from the restaurant only. Staff were friendly once I got their attention. As for the food, tried Okaasan's Chicken Sandwich, few desserts (these items were from deli/dessert counters) and Hiyashi Chuka (cold noodles) from the restaurant. Okaasan's Chicken were slightly on a greasy side, the cold noodles were disappointing (not sure what kind of sauce they use but definitely not what I am familiar with) and desserts were good. If I ever return, then I will definitely try something different.

Yelp
Great food, fine service by experienced staff and a truly comfortable family atmosphere. Nice complaints!

Yelp
Just had lunch at the new outdoor area (formerly street parking) and the space is so nice and well-planned. Had to give Comforts a shout out for giving up valuable parking spots to make lovely outdoor dining available. If you haven't been--go inside and buy your beverage and meal (for me it is the Chinese chicken salad) and have a seat. When you and your party are finished, please clean up after yourselves. There is lots of room, umbrellas, space heaters. Can't go wrong.

Yelp
I'm really upset with my order today. I'm huge fan of this please. 20 years ago I took a $90 cab ride looking for this place. Today I ordered a slice of pie and they gave me 1/4 of a pie looks like it's been eaten. And gave me only 1 cupcake when I paid for 2. Got my usual salad like always! I can't afford this place anymore but was feeling sad and needed to treat myself. I'm even more sad now.

Andrew R.

Yelp
Wow... and not a good wow. $$$$$ if you wanna pay $11.50 for the smallest broccoli salad, $12.50 for a small turkey chili and over pay for everything else they sell try this place. It's a beautiful place that was just renovated but what you get for the price is insane. Service is good but again, not worth the prices.

Kris C.

Yelp
never had a bad meal here. grab a chinese chicken salad and chicken okasan to go afterwards.

Yelp
Man, I am conflicted about giving Comforts a 4 or 5 star review. My experience wasn't great, but I think it's because I was there are the wrong time or something. It was chaos inside the small deli when I was there, a Saturday before they closed at 3:00pm. I think people were getting their last minute items and it just felt overwhelming in the tight space. I'm not a fan of pre-packaged salads as there is usually something in it that I don't want, so I ordered their famous Chinese Chicken Salad with a few modifications. The gentleman who helped me was really nice and helpful, but I felt rushed and like I had to yell over everyone talking. I'm not sure if you can normally sit inside and they were beginning the closing process, but we had to sit outside and I was so cold. The reason I am conflicted on the 5 stars is because the salad was 1200 stars - it WAS SO GOOD! I ordered the large size and it fed me for three meals! I am going to try to re-create it myself because there is not a Comforts near me, but I don't think I'll come close to theirs. My co-diners very much enjoyed their deli salads and desserts, everything was just so delicious. In summary, the food was 15 / 10, but the chaotic ambience was a 1 / 10. I'll try to come back when it's not as busy and enjoy my meal a little more.

Yelp
Food tasted bad and the service was bad. Do not get the pasta. I will not be going back again.

Antonio H.

Yelp
I have been told about Comforts. I was told that they have a wonderful salad. Today I have confirmed they have a wonderful Chinese Chicken Salad. I was also told to try the Oksan Chicken, it did not disappoint. Thank you comforts!!

Dana D.

Yelp
Food is good. Menu changes every week. Coffee bar is good. Service is pretty good. Ambiance is excellent. Most of the staff I saw did not speak English.
google avatar

Todd L.

Yelp
Must've been short staffed for the day cause service was pretty slow, however, it's all good. Totally worth the visit.

Judy S.

Yelp
Brunch has been really good for the last few times, we go there almost every weekend and sometimes during the week for lunch. My husband loves the staples like the crispy bacon , eggs and potatoes. I am more adventurous. Had pork tenderloin , eggs, and spanish rice last week, wonderful! This week had the gluten free popcorn shrimp salad, just divine, will order that again and again. Also the to go chicken salad is addictive, and the shrimp rolls are also great as long as they put the mint in, sometimes they forget. Servers are wonderful and so nice. Usually a 5 star experience.

Yelp
Great to go options of you're looking for something quick. They are known for their Chinese chicken salad and Chicken Okasan but have lots of other hot and cold options which you can buy per lb or portion. Definitely on the $$$ side but you pay for their preparation and convenience.
