Commensal Fermentation

•August 2024• from the ex head brewer of Cascade comes his own place. With that said, don’t come in expecting sours. The beers were pretty good. The highlight for me was the blonde coffee stout. We came in the afternoon and by the evening it was packed with families and kids. Not really my jam. Definitely not your typical brewery vibe. I was told it’s supposed to be more welcoming for everyone. I’m not a fan of everyone but if that’s your thing you’ll love it here.

Great place to hangout with a group. We got hazy IPA - peeling eyes and a feared or loved. Both the beers were great. Smoked almonds were great too. Very simplistic interior with great options for house made beers. Walkable distance from a lot of great restaurants nearby! Outside food is also allowed here.

Commensal is my favorite brewery. It's the one I go to most, and with good reason. Morgan and Mike are the absolute best. The beer is top notch (unsurprising, with the Cascade pedigree), plus the commitment to pop-ups, markets, wine collabs, etc. makes me so happy. We love the place so much that we also rented the place out for our rehearsal dinner, (insanely reasonable price) and then had their beer at our wedding. So know my five-star review includes that, too. (Also low-key some of the best bread you'll ever have).

Excellent beer. Love that it isn’t too strong. The Bags Out of the Cat is a delicious hazy. Lovely aesthetic- Studio McGee meets a modern Potterybarn. The whole ambience is sophisticated, relaxed, calming. The perfect hangout and gathering spot. Don’t come too hungry;)

This place rocks. Beautifully designed interior that feels clean with a soothing cool. But those drinks!!! Love the lime-infused lager for the summer, so fresh! I crave it on warm days and wish we had it in stores! And the proprietors are just hands-down rad humans!

This is the best brewery in Portland. The beer is delicious (new stuff all the time), kid friendly, and the staff are great. They also bring in the best pop ups. Worth a visit

À veteran owned brewery with an Oregon pedegree, Michael having been head brewer with the amazing Cascade brewing and his good friends have opened a warm and inviting place to commune with people that are fanatical about life and the great adventure of creating art in everything they do. If you desire to taste "craft" beer, come in and say hi. They work both sides of the house and will welcome you in.

Dropped in after dinner across the street. Complete remodel from the previous brewery ~ classy modern livingroom vibe that makes a great place to chill & sip. Fireplace too. Beer is tasty and by the history, they enjoy a good rotation of styles. Service ~ welcoming & friendly! Easy to talk with and courteous to thank you when you leave. Awesome relaxing drinking spot for the neighborhood.

Commensal Fermentation was a great stop on our last trip to Portland! During many of our visits there we try to fit in stops at breweries if we can and Commensal was one of stops. The beer is excellent here! The lagers and lighter beers are quite good! I got a witbier by the name of Horses Held. This beer had elements going on that I love with herbal characteristics, clove, lemon, fruity and breadiness. The taproom is nice looking too with it's clean, sleek look that it has going on. Definitely a satisfying stop and a brewery I definitely recommend if you're visiting. I would love to get ahold of more of those lighter beers!

The beer was good and they had a great pizza pop-up! Cool space with picnic tables, good people. Excited to try the other beers.

Cozy spot near Migration Brewing with a more refined vibe. "Commensal" means something like synergy or symbiois, and the friendly owners explained they want it be a space where people chat and make connections. On this cold winter day, it was a wonderful place to sit by the fire in cushy chairs and catch up with my good friend. The beer was impressive - a short list for now, but the hazy was one of the best I've had, similar to the ones I loved at the departed Mumford Brewing in L.A. There was plenty of creamy lactose, but it was still crisp and hoppy. I wish them all luck with this space!

I love the ambiance of this place. Clean and cozy. Minimalist but not bleak, white and devoid of warmth. The 2 tenders at the front were extremely kind and chill. We stumbled in not really knowing what this place was all about and we had a nice conversation with the tall gentleman with reddish hair at the front. Nice wine and beer selection. The pizza smelled sooo good. Would've gotten some if we were not waiting for a table over at EEM.

Super chill spot with a beautiful interior--great vibe all around. The beer list is legit, and it's clear they actually care about brewing well-balanced stuff, not just flooding the menu with hazies. Big fan of the crispy beers and especially the Black IPA, which are hard to find done right. Also love that they regularly host popups--always something good to eat while sipping. Solid place to hang.

This brewery is fantastic--the beers are excellent, the atmosphere is delightful, and the service from the friendly bartenders is top-notch. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a visit!

Fast and friendly service. Brews were fresh and tasty. Will hit this spot every time I travel to Portland. Shot out to Brewer Mike, super knowledgeable brew master. Looking forward to what he brings to the industry!

Great beer! I have tried most of their beers, their lighter beers are fresh, the hazy was real good. The place is upscaled nicely, they did an excellent job creating a fine place to enjoy fruits of their craft.
