Compass Coffee Makes a Bold Move By Accepting Cryptocurrency in D.C.  - Eater DC

"Making a statement against credit card 'junk' processing fees, D.C.'s veteran-owned Compass Coffee invited today's Navy Yard customers to buy their brew with digital dollars instead. The one-day pilot with Coinbase coincides with the top U.S. crypto exchange’s Update the System Summit in the nation’s capital. While mega-chains like Starbucks and Subway have recently started accepting payments in bitcoin and the like, it's rare for a small business like Compass to get into crypto. Today's Half Street SE customers can scan a QR code to pay with USDC — a so-called 'stablecoin' that acts like a digital dollar — and sip cups rebranded with Coinbase facts on 'unnecessary transaction fees' pocketed by big banks. Decade-old Compass, which loses almost 4 percent in revenues to every credit card swipe, says its global bean suppliers could also financially benefit from using faster digital dollars. Coinbase tells Eater it's teaming with Compass to 'show D.C. a real-life example of how money can move with the speed and ease of the internet, without the middleman hiking up fees.' The unlikely partnership could blossom this year into the implementation of an actual crypto-accepting system across its 16 local cafes." - Tierney Plumb

My vanilla latte was so good!!! I had it with the chicken sausage sandwich and it was the perfect breakfast before a full day. Looking forward to coming back and trying out the pastries too!

Google
Love the almond butter latte! Asked for a pup cup for my dog and was told they were out of whipped cream. I found it odd that a coffee house would be out of whipped cream.

Serves great coffee and pastry. I love their menu. They have very unique flavours in their coffee. I loved their Maple Cold Brew, it tastes so good on its own. Their Gingerbread latte is perfect for festive season. Their espresso chocolate chip biscotti is worth trying as well. Lovely customer service and amazing coffee.Their baristas are well trained and does a beautiful latte art. They have a good seating space with ample sunlight. Highly recommended cafe!

Google
In DC for work. I came to Compass because it was close to my hotel, and I saw their positive reviews. Smart touch to put a colorful compass sign outside! Early morning short line. Staff seemed a little grumpy. I had the honey turmeric latte, amazing. Balanced and both ingredients came through. Bright, clean, light industrial feel. Big garage doors open when it's nice outside. And for fun, a baseball bat counter, a hat tip to the Nats who play just down the street. A little pricey but what isn't these days?

Good wifi and great coffee! I come here often to work and the mobile ordering system is very easy to learn and use. You can really rack up the points and rewards. One of the best work cafes in the city!

Opened in March 2022, the Navy Yard location is the newest in the Compass Coffee family. After stopping in for a latte and a pastry, here's what's to love: 1) Space: It's one of their larger locations with plenty of tables, seats and even a raised area with more seats. With high ceilings and product spread throughout the shop, it feels big. They have wifi and outlets, making it a great place to work from. 2) Location: It's in Navy Yard really close to Nats Stadium and plenty of other shops. 3) Coffee: They have all the basic coffee items and a large menu of specialty and seasonal items, including a cherry blossom nitro brew during the spring. My go-to is an almond butter latte. Here's where they could improve after working through grand opening kinks: 1) Time: It took a very long time to get your coffee drink. Even without a line, there was a bit of a wait. Although unexpectedly long, I don't blame them. They just had one person making drinks on a Tuesday morning. Hopefully as the pandemic ends, they can hire more baristas to help. 2) Food: They have decent pastries and I love their ham and cheese croissant. However, the one at this location was pretty cold making the cheese very "block-y." 3) Parking: This isn't their fault, but there's no easy spot to park on the block so Metro/walk when you can.

I stopped by compass coffee for the first time on 12/6. I wasn’t familiar with their menu and was greeted by Donovan. He was so personable and patient with me. He even took time to explain different types of macchiatos and made sure I was pleased with my drink. I really appreciated this.

Google
You have to sign up for their email list to connect to wifi. I don’t recommend to order a large hot chocolate. Maybe a smaller size would be good, but large is just like sweetened milk.

Yelp
Great coffee and ambiance indoors and outdoors. They have a large indoor space as well as outdoor seating. Plenty of people working indoors, a few with dogs. The coffee and espresso is delicious, and they'll serve you in mugs to stay if you ask! They also sell their coffee beans in refillable metal tins.

Yelp
We came here twice on our trip as it was around the corner from our hotel. The service was always quick, our second day the cashier loved his job which was fun. He had great recommendations. We tried the maple latte, gingerbread latte, chai tea, and almond butter latte. All were good - I felt like the shots weren't consistent and sometimes tasted a little burnt. Their foam skills were top notch as we got cool designs both days. Definitely convenient for the area but I'm not sure I would go out of my way consistently to grab coffee here.

Yelp
Clean, friendly and yuppy vibe makes this location a nice stop during work breaks. Staff and service always pleasant and coffee on point! I have yet to try any solid here but they do look appetizing and an array of pastries on display definitely neat! I noticed books on shelf and a sign says: take a book or leave a book and I did the latter, for I was just there for a quick lift me up before my office mtg...

Yelp
Great service and fun seasonal coffees! I like their cherry blossom latte (more for the aesthetics than anything else, I'll admit). Their croissants are solid - not outstanding, but tasty and a good start to the morning, especially if you ask for them warmed up. The coffee itself isn't my favorite (I'm biased first because it's so close to Yellow, which has really creative coffees, and because even for DC I think $6.75 for a latte is a ton), but the hours are really convenient, the service is great, and the space is big and has loads of seating/areas to sit and work.

Yelp
I ordered a container of their Autumn Blend coffee to take home with me. It has about 340 grams which should last us until the end of the year. Especially since we don't drink coffee everyday. While I was here I also got a decaf espresso to chill with while I was here. I love the vibe at this particular location and there is amole seating for a large number of customers. The people who work here are also very nice, and they took my order right away. What's even better is that they are having a promotion tomorrow where they are giving away gift cards to the first few customers. This cafe is also pretty quiet and I think it would be a great place to set-up and work. I didn't spend a lot of time here today, bit the place seems like it could be a lot of fun.

Yelp
Interesting and varied seating inside, allowing all kinds of purposes for staying inside to have your coffee, whether it's for working or socializing. They have a great pastry menu for a local coffee joint. My mocha was great.

Yelp
One of my go-to spots for coffee, pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and of course pup cups for my best pup friend! The service and friendly and quick while taking the time to make each drink the best. It's a great place to meet friends or study for an exam. The place can be quiet during the week day but hopping on a Saturday morning during the farmers market. My favorite time of year has begun, Fall seasonal drinks! My new favorite drink is their maple latte, hot or iced. I add some cinnamon and it reminds me of French toast!

Yelp
Compass Coffee is a local DC chain and one of their outlets was located down the street from my hotel. Unfortunately, I came after cherry blossom season. I would have loved to try their cherry blossom latte. Instead, I just got my usual iced vanilla latte. The menu isn't super extensive but they do have seasonal drinks. Anyways, I was a huge fan of their iced vanilla lattes...to the point that I ordered it for 3 mornings straight. The coffee blends well with the vanilla syrup that they used. It's probably a bit on the sweeter side so for people who don't like too sweet coffee drinks, I suppose you can ask for less syrup? The shop itself is so spacious! I would be in at 8 AM and there would already be people sitting down to do some work. It's airy and large windows for the summer light to come thru. They also have lots of their coffee beans for sell all around the shop.

Yelp
It is wonderful the Navy Yard/Capitol Riverfront area is getting some more coffee shop competition. This Compass Coffee location is roomy with plenty of seats and an excellent air conditioning system if you want to cool off with an iced latte before heading into Nationals Park. It is right next to the current Bullpen location at the Half St Metro entrance/exit. Shout out to the employees here for their friendliness and efficiency and keeping the store clean each time in here.

Yelp
This was a cute modern coffee shop. I liked that they had seasonal lattes that were creative! My latte was good and served at the right temp. However, service was blah and the people seemed irked by customers .

Annie B.

Yelp
CAN YOU PUT A BIGGER SIGN FOR DIRTY GLASSES! I grabbed a glass for sparkling water and noticed after it I had nowhere to leave the dirty glass that I had grabbed a dirty glass. Writing it on the tray is not enough.

Lexxi M.

Yelp
I dont usually leave reviews because i like to give the benefit of the doubt. But shame on you compass! I came in i ordered my latte, and the cashier an i ( i didn't catch his name but he has clear glasses) were talking and who i assume was the manager disrespectfully cut us off an made me move. not only is it unprofessional and inconsiderate to talk to your customers in such a manner. I wouldn't recommend coming back. I'd rather walk to starbucks than be mistreated by a poorly trained manager.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. The espresso is always a hit. Wish there were more food options but the cute environment and extremely friendly staff make up for it!

Yelp
My dog's favorite coffee shop! Compass Coffee is super dog friendly and we're here for it. Don't forget to ask for your pup cup when you order. They also have great seasonal drinks, but I tend to gravitate toward their cold brews. There's also plenty of seating and tables if you want a nice cafe to work from! Fair warning: if you're into flavored drinks, expect it to be sweet! SERVICE: 5/5 - I went during peak coffee rush hour (8am). There was a huge line, but employees kept the line moving and operated in such an efficient way! I only had to wait about 5 minutes to get my coffee, I was definitely surprised. Even when I went back to ask for a pup cup, the staff was super kind and immediately got me a cup, even though he was busy fulfilling orders. The cafe itself was very well maintained and clean. FOOD/DRINKS: - Vanilla Creme Cold Brew: 3/5 - Still good overall, but WAY too sweet. If you're into sweet drinks, you'll like this one! I was expecting something a little it more toned down. - Nitro Cold Brew: 5/5 - I would 100% come back for the nitro! It wasn't bitter at all. A smooth beverage to chug in the morning for sure! - Almond Croissant: 3/5 - Just your average croissant! I found that there was way too much powdered sugar on top, which made it slightly messy to eat. There also wasn't as much filling as I expected. Great service and great staple drinks! I don't enjoy too much sugar in the mornings, so it might have skewed my rating, but overall, I did enjoy this coffee shop and will be coming back for their unsweeted drinks!

Yelp
Shout out to Compass Coffee for always being amazing. My local compass is always quick and efficient, making it a great and easy way to grab a quick morning drink and pastry on the go. The staff is always nice and goes above and beyond. My boyfriend refuses to drink any other coffee other than compass, and they have the best iced chai latte I've ever had.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
I was in town staying nearby and decided to drop into this coffee shop. The coffee isn't very strong, and everything was super sweet. I thought maybe it was just that morning so I came back the next day to try it out again, picking something else from the menu. Results were the same. It has a great location and the shop is perfect for writing or working, but I just didn't love the coffee.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this beautiful space that's finally close to Capitol Hill.... I still hope we'll get our own closer to eastern market as we only have 2-3 decent coffee shops ... but compass coffee beans are by far the smoothest and tastiest - I enjoyed meeting the manager and chatting with him, made me feel welcome and taken care of !! So happy to have them here FINALLY!!

Yelp
Literally the best breakfast sand I have ever eaten. The coffee was great too. Love the store and the interior. Very chic. They got the drip and they leavin no crumbs here.

Yelp
I'm so excited that Compass Coffee opened a location in Navy Yard today. Already the coffee shop is bustling, but that didn't delay their baristas in the least. Service was so quick! I ordered a vanilla latte, which was just what I was expecting. I am so excited to go back for their springtime Cherry Blossom Cold Brew -- it's PINK! I think I've found my new coffee spot. :)
google avatar

Yelp
I've had Compass Coffee at other places but never at a Compass Coffee location. I walked into their location at Navy Yard on opening day and not only is it in a great location, the staff was everything you want in your local coffee shop. I ordered the Nutella mocha latte and it was possibly one of my favorite iced coffees. The coffee and chocolate taste mix well allowing the great coffee to really come through. I'll be back.
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
I don't exactly know why but I love any place that sells coffee that is not a Starbucks. This place seems to have perfected it and a nice place to grab a cup. I am not sure what the rules on dogs are but there were several in there which my wife was sooo happy about. I think it is cool as well. The coffee was very good. I liked the layout as well. We were escaping the cold and waiting for a friend and this was a good experience. I would definitely do it again.

Yelp
This is dangerous. Having a Compass Coffee location within a mile of my apartment will be a true test of restraint for me. Compass is my favorite coffee in the district, and their newest location does not disappoint. There is plentiful seating, aesthetic decor - including colorful coffee tins, and a large garage door that they had open because the weather was nice. I always like to try their seasonal flavors, and the cherry blossom cream cold brew did not disappoint. It's pink and very sweet, so if you are looking for a true coffee flavor, you should pass on this one. But, as a treat it was fabulous!

Yelp
We stopped by this Compass Coffee location before going to a Nationals game down the street. I don't think I've been to any of their other locations. The service was good - everyone was really friendly! The coffee was good - we stuck with our usual: latte for him, Americano for me. The location isn't huge, but it had ample seating! Not a bad coffee shop - but I wouldn't recommend stopping by during a Nationals game unless you need a pre-game pick me up too!

Kaley A.

Yelp
Tried the maple latte which was really delightful. It is comforting drink for the fall weather. My drink was made quickly with love.
google avatar

Amari S.

Yelp
I love trying new coffee shops around D.C. and heard that Compass was a great one. I got the iced Nutella mocha latte with oatmilk. First, I was shocked at how lightly colored my drink was, as mochas tend to be dark brown (chocolate). After taking the first sip, I was underwhelmed. This was definitely not as rich or chocolate-y as other mochas I've had. The atmosphere of the coffee shop is nice and there is a variety of seating.

Shantrice W.

Yelp
Great customer service and great coffee! Fast service and clean. The manager Danni was so friendly and courteous. Kudos for putting something nice in the neighborhood where customer feel welcomed and at home!!!

Chris C.

Yelp
We were in town over Presidents Day weekend. This place was the only shop open at 6:30am. Very friendly and engaging staff. The coffee and breakfast sandwiches were excellent and very competitively priced. Highly recommend stopping in.

Yelp
Pretty location! They're all pretty good to be fair. Good study, meetup spot. I like an almond milk honey turmeric latte (hot or iced!) and one of the delicious pastries- ham and cheese croissant, coconut macaroon, kolaches (i used to dream about those). They have a great selection of sweet and savory snacks along the checkout line and usually tasty refrigerated drinks too. You can also buy their coffee beans and have them ground to your method of brewing or fill up a jug of their cold brew. The coffee is delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here three times and each time I've enjoyed my drink, but that's not my issue here. My issue is their obvious inconsistencies regarding their store pet policy. Last week when I visited there was a lady in front of me with a goldendoodle (that they gave a pup cup) and another dog in there--a bigger doodle, maybe a bernadoodle? I made a mental note of this, that I could stop here one day while walking my dog if I didn't feel like going to the Starbucks. However just now when I brought my dog in, the cashier asked me if my dog was a service animal and told me to wait outside for my drink. Of course I have no problem with "service animals only" rules at places, however as I was leaving the store to wait outside I literally had to walk past a woman sitting in the store on her laptop with her pomeranian. I'm 99% sure her pomeranian is not a service animal. When another worker brought my drink, I asked her about the policy, mentioning the dogs I'd seen in the store before and pointing out the lady sitting there with her pomeranian. She said she was going to ask that lady if her dog was a service dog (she didn't) and asked me if my dog wanted a pup cup (nah, we good). Again, no problems with "service dogs only" rules but enforce them consistently and fairly. Don't pick and choose who you make wait outside.

Yelp
Excited to have a Compass Coffee here in Navy Yard! Today was their opening day, and I got the Cherry Blossom Cream Cold Brew. I didn't know what to expect but it wasn't overly sweet which I enjoyed. The location is awesome inside, very spacious and a lot of tables (would be a good work spot maybe). The employees were all so friendly and helpful when I asked about the menu. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Several days ago I spontaneously had a matcha latte here. And it was so good that I keep thinking about it, so I figured it warranted a review.

Chris R.

Yelp
This used to be my go to coffee shop. When it opened the service was great, so much so it drove the coffee shop attached to Gatsby out of business. However in the last 6 months they've had huge staff turnover. Its hard to get someone's attention, orders are poorly made, and take forever. Today was the final straw, my latte was just milk, without and espresso, and this wasn't the first time.
google avatar

Jason V.

Yelp
I was underwhelmed by the coffee at Compass Coffee. It was just okay - nothing special or memorable. To be fair, the coffee wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. It was just kind of mediocre. If you're looking for a quick caffeine fix, Compass Coffee will do the trick, but since Starbucks is closer I will just go there.
google avatar

Kristi C.

Yelp
I'm so excited to finally have this location open! I've missed Compass Coffee so much these last ~2 years. Visiting this new location today, you'd never guess it's only been open about a week: ordering was organized and fast, and everything was filled quickly and correctly. I went for an Americano, because I prefer black coffee and I love their Emblem espresso bean. One of my colleagues ordered the almond butter latte and raved about it after. In addition to excellent, locally roasted coffee, I've always appropriated the high quality pasties and the inclusion of at least one vegan item (dairy intolerance). Today is was a fantastic morning glory muffin. By the register they had sample of their pods that for Nespresso machines, so we'll be trying that out soon. They also had K cups for sale.

Yelp
This Compass branch right near the sports stadium is very busy (at least on a Saturday morning). It has some slightly higher and some slightly lower levels. Despite the barristas being overrun given the numbers of customers, they tried their best to be warm and friendly. They have real cups but one has to ask for it (likely because when one is so busy, it is easier to serve paper cups rather than having to deal with loading dishwashers. The customers are a young (24-29ish) young-professionals type crowd, nearly all of them there with their laptops (like me :-)
google avatar

Kris W.

Yelp
My favorite cappuccino on the Hill. Always friendly, consistent. Nice open space to work in as well.

Dana ..

Yelp
compass coffee use to be my go to place but my last 3 visits have sucked. I have waited over 30 minutes for an order each time and had to approach the staff where it is. They are so friendly and nice but the experience has been ruined that my order continues to get lost.
google avatar

Kiora B.

Yelp
Though they don't lead with this, I'll support any coffee house founded by two former Marines. Their coffee is great, and I also purchase their ground coffee for home. I especially love the turmeric latte--creamy goodness with a dose of health--and the complimentary dog biscuits. It is always wonderful to see people find a second wind/calling/passion after their dedicated service and do well -- Semper Fidelis!

Jesse A.

Yelp
Great coffee but barista attitudes could be better. No need to give attitude over the smallest of questions.
google avatar

Janelle S.

Yelp
I have only lived in Navy Yard for a few weeks but this is definitely my favorite coffee shop! It is absolutely adorable and a great place to work from home. The coffee is delicious and the employees are very nice. There is also water available, sparkling and regular.
google avatar

Marissa B.

Yelp
Facilitates a good working environment with outlets available at every table/booth. However, this is not a dog friendly establishment for non-service dog animals. I will continue to support Gregory's due to their extremely dog friendly environment both inside and out.

Sean W.

Yelp
Good coffee, silly business practices. They don't take cash. If you want to pay cash, they give you you change on a gift card. When I asked for a receipt after paying with my card, he said "Its 2023, we don't print paper receipts. Save a tree". And I responded, "But my coffee is in a paper cup and you were going to give me a plastic gift card for change". Nonsense.

Anonymous A.

Yelp
They need to label which items are dairy-free/vegan. I ordered the almond butter latte with soy milk and thankfully the cashier informed me that there is dairy in the almond butter, which is really odd. With the majority of the population being lactose intolerant, they should clearly make this known or simply not add dairy that typically wouldn't contain it. I ordered the cherry blossom latte prior to this and it was like drinking cheap candy. Worst latte invention to exist which is really disappointing since Compass coffee used to be my favorite coffee chain prior to Yellow and Mah-Z-Dahr. Recommendations: Add dietary info to the menu and don't add candy and dairy to everything.
