"At the Half Street SE location, I watched the veteran-owned, decade-old Compass Coffee run a one-day pilot with Coinbase inviting customers to pay with USDC by scanning a QR code to push back against credit-card “junk” processing fees; cups were even rebranded with Coinbase facts about unnecessary transaction fees pocketed by big banks. The shop says it loses almost 4 percent of revenues to every credit card swipe and argues that its global bean suppliers could also financially benefit from using faster digital dollars. Coinbase told Eater it partnered with Compass to show D.C. a real-life example of moving money with internet speed and without middlemen hiking fees, and the unlikely pilot could expand this year into a crypto-accepting system across Compass’s 16 local cafes." - Tierney Plumb
