Best Restaurants in Napa Valley | Eater SF

"A triple threat, Compline is a wine bar, restaurant, and wine shop in one. Started by two sommeliers — co-founder Matt Stamp is a master somm — Compline’s impressive collection of bottles goes far beyond Napa Valley and includes selections from all over the world, including some regions and grapes you’ve likely never heard of. The burger and duck fat fries are Compline’s reigning royalty, but the fried chicken sandwich has a shot at the throne. Those can be snagged at lunch while dinner brings other delights, like locally sourced halibut and hanger steak." - Flora Tsapovsky

Wow! Highly, highly, highly recommend a stop here. The staff is phenomenal and so incredibly knowledgeable. The resident knowledge they have on the wine scene, local scene and the many other aspects of Napa is so cool. The aesthetics were incredible with a great sound system jamming out some great vinyls. We got the Napa and Nearby flight and thoroughly enjoyed it and loved hearing the explanations! You need to make this your drop in spot while in Napa.

I was recommended this place by their neighbor, Mayacamas, to get some recommendations for Syrahs. There were two staff members and they seemed busy even though it wasn't packed. One of them brought me into their... storage? to show me a couple bottles at my price point. I asked if they offered these bottles for a tasting and he explained "they're a wine shop and can't open everything". He explained one of the bottles is part of a set tasting and then I was left in there... to browse? There wasn't a lot of explaining and it woulda been cool to see some of their other 50 bottles of syrah which the other staff member claimed they had. Their concept isn't straight forward and doesn't seem like they run tastings or a wine shop well. I coincidentally bumped into one of their other clients the day after at Darioush and he thought it was a little off how I was treated. It wasn't exactly offensive to me, but definitely not inviting. I bought the same bottle I saw at this place at Back Room Wines. If someone else is dishing out the same product as you, you better do it better than them.

A fabulous friend recommended Compline. I purchased some wines for my hubby. He was thrilled. We had a few issues, this crew stayed on top, and I didn’t need to follow through. Resolution was seamless and hubby is over the top with selection they recommended. Thanks so much for your knowledge and help and fantastic customer service!!!!

Google
Quintessential Napa at its most AMAZING. Toss the pretentiousness out when you come in here, just great wine, great conversation and great people! Dane and Peter are both gracious and passionate in sharing their knowledge and love of wine from the area. First day in Napa on a 4-day celebration of the wife's birthday weekend and they did not disappoint. Dane is profound in having his finger on the pulse of the region's wines and does a spectacular presentation of the love put in by the vintners they carry - a deep appreciation for him and those he represents. Peter placed so much care and attention in the offerings he provided to our table. Their countenance, amiability and welcoming attention - not only to us but everyone that walks in to the shop have solidified this as a great way to start off our visit each time we return. Thank you both!

Cool vibe. Nice wine room and lounge separated with a do-it-yourself vinyl turntable.

Google
Thanks to compline everyone was able to be part of the olympics! We loved this little challenge and came back a second time to take part and taste some of their delicious wines. A feel good shop and bar with an interesting selection. If this place was just a little closer to home, we became regulars.

Sorry Napa, I found great Burgundy wines at the shop.

Google
In downtown Napa. The wine cellar was really cool and one of the cool murals I’ve ever seen. The wine tasting was ok. But very expensive even more Monterey and for the amount you got. If you go i recommend getting glasses. Even those are pretty expensive though. Very classy atmosphere depends what you want. I may return

Yelp
Privileged to be invited to a wine party as a guest of a member, this was quite the experience. Well organized and pretty crowded, there was a great spread of food and a sample of the sparkling wine. And while socializing, people just started buying bottles of wine and pouring them. I took one small pour of one and then a second of another, but since I wasn't planning on sharing the wealth, I opted to just nurse the second one for a while. Fun to talk to strangers and stretch my social mingling muscles with these folks. And yes, there is a lot of wine here. For someone like me who isn't a connoisseur, it's a bit overwhelming. But if you like wine and you're willing to spend money for excellent choices, this is the spot. [Review 21002 overall - 519 in California - 1987 of 2023.]

Yelp
It's definitely a wine shop with plenty of interesting wines in the cellar room. The problem is that they won't tell you what they taste like. "We don't play that game" is not a flavor. It's an arrogant answer. The other odd thing is that they only have like 6 wines open to taste. What's the point? Very nice place with manufactured vibe stolen from actual wine tasting rooms in an austere Napa way greased over by tons of investor money.

Yelp
If you haven't had a chance to check out the dedicated wine shop opened by the Compline team, you should definitely put it on your short list. I really love the vibe of the space - minimalistic, with a huge mural showing many of the world's wine regions, and the centerpiece record player that's always spinning. It's a great place to duck in out of the brutal summertime Napa heat to grab a glass or two of some exceptional wines. They offer a number of wines by the glass, ranging in price from $14-25/glass - it's a pretty broad selection with something for everyone. Additionally, they offer some flights if you want to try a range of different wines. Perhaps the best value though is to pick up a bottle from their selection and enjoy it in the shop for a $30 corkage (though I heard this may decrease to $15 to match the restaurant). The selection is absolutely massive and while I did see some very expensive, well recognized labels on the shelf (Ponsot, for example), their selection tends to focus on smaller producers and even more obscure varietals, which is great! You may find some bottles at other shops a few dollars cheaper, but overall, the pricing is very reasonable. If you're looking for a special bottle to take home or looking to kill some time before a dinner reservation, definitely add the wine shop to your list.

Yelp
Super cute place. We loved the vibe. Record player, nice leather couch and an awesome mural to look at! We bought a bottle of sparkling wine to go. We hope to return for wine tasting. Dane the rep was upbeat and helpful.

Yelp
Jeremy was a pleasure, very knowledgeable on the wines they had to serve and went the extra mile to ensure we were taken care of. Will come back, thank you!

Yelp
Compline came highly recommend by the friendly folks at a nearby shop so I decided to stop in for a glass of wine. I walked up to the bar and was instantly told that there is a private event in 45 minutes and that is not enough time for me to partake in a glass of wine. I stayed despite the obvious attempt by the bartender to insinuate that I am not welcome while there were others around me he was serving, asking what else he can get them and refilling their water glasses. The bartender was extremely unfriendly, seemed unwilling to serve me and gave me a small pour compared to the other patrons being served. The only difference between myself and the other patrons was my skin color. He made me feel like I did not belong in that establishment. To the friendly patrons at the bar that day, thank you for making me feel welcome, engaging in conversation and being kind. I would not go back nor would I recommend this place to any people of color.
