Where To Eat A Great Chopped Cheese in NYC - New York - The Infatuation

"Compton’s makes officially the most expensive chopped cheese on this guide, priced at $15. But when you consider that you can play Pac-Man while you wait for your sandwich at either of the Greenpoint and Astoria branches of this sandwich shop, it’s not such a bad deal. Add in that this sandwich is made on a crusty sesame semolina loaf, with crunchy iceberg lettuce. The beef is rich, the cheese is gooey, the ketchup and mustard flavors are on point, and it’s a faithful, if a bit fancier, representation of the sandwich." - will hartman

The Best Restaurants in Astoria | Eater NY

"This hip hop-themed sandwich shop (a sign on the wall proclaims “Straight Outta Astoria”) turns out what may be one of the city’s most elaborate breakfast sandwiches: two runny fried eggs, sausage, cheese, avocado, hash browns, and bright orange Sriracha mayo on a roll. Lots of hot and cold heroes, too, plus cheese steaks, smash burgers, and small fried snacks." - Eater Staff

This is a pretty decent place that comes in handy when I need a quick meal after work. I am a sandwich fan, so when they opened up I was pretty excited. I tried a few things on the menu including their chopped cheese, chicken bacon ranch, and the burrata BLT. I typically order pick up off uber eats because they offer a buy 1 get 1 deal on certain sandwiches based on the day. I will say the quality is definitely there. The burrata taste fresh, and the bacon went nicely with it. The chopped cheese was not bad, but the chicken and bacon ranch needs a major edit. I don’t eat sandwiches without cheese, and lets be realistic if a sandwich has chicken cutlet, bacon, it needs cheese. That is like serving a greek gyro wrap with no feta or a chicken parm with no melted mozzarella on top. I had to take the sandwich apart and apply my own cheese which was annoying because sandwich lovers know once you assemble the sandwich, it is done you don’t open the hat to add more. It is literally begging for melted cheese and there is no option on uber eats to add cheese. One could argue this is not the restaurants fault; virtually every other restaurant I order off of in uber eats has an option to add you're own preferences. I once had to call this place to tell them not to add ketchup to my sandwich that I ordered because there was no option to edit on Uber eats which is crazy. Some people don’t like ketchup, you can’t expect us to call every time we make an order through an app to say hey no ketchup please that is enough to discourage me from ordering. I don’t like talking on the phone and want to avoid it at all cost hence why I use apps to order. They need to have an option for comments so that people can actually fine tune their order to what they want. When I last picked up my sandwich, I mentioned my lack of cheese complaint and they said you can call us to add it and we will increase the price. The sandwich is expensive enough if adding a slice of cheese is going to boost the price, I am not interested. I worked at restaurants, I have served sandwiches, I know for a fact that adding a slice of cheese will cost them next to nothing so I am not even giving that argument a chance to surface. Even if they did not charge extra for the cheese, I am not calling them to ask to add cheese to my sandwich that is incredibly annoying. I give this place 3 stars because the food itself is decent, but the lack of options on the app and the recommendation to call in orders to get them the way I want is not good enough in 2025. If you order a sandwich from here and have absolutely no edits, this may be the place for you but I never seen a restaurant on uber eats not include that little blurb to add preferences. If they fix this, it would boost them to 4 stars but I can’t give more than 3 with the lack of options.

Hey! So I didn’t go to the restaurant, I ordered for delivery. I went to one years ago in Astoria and loved it, so was ecstatic to see that there was one in Jersey! I ordered their Hal’s hero and lemme just say, sis, Hal made it do what it do, YaYa! It was thee perfect ratio from Turkey, to cheese, to mayo, to salt n vinegar chips, to lettuce and tomato, to bread! Just, so well done! The fact that they had salt and vinegar chips? Are you serious?? Babyyyyy, that pickle-y crunch? Please! And thank you. They were not skimpy with the turkey at all. At first, I was wondering if I should order extra turkey, but Compton’s are not doing those Subway portions, babes. They give you what you pay for, hear me?! It is greatly appreciated. Also, a lot of places don’t add enough sauce or mayo. There was the perfect amount of mayo on my Hal’s hero. It is greatly appreciated! I will be ordering again and again, Compton’s!

First time here. I don't eat meat so tried the Waldorf tuna wrap. IMO way too much mayo, I didn't taste any raisins or walnuts at all which is reason I bought Waldorf tuna. Price was high. Should come with a little something at that price ($14) Presentation was not elegant. I suggest cutting it on an angle and serve with a little something that won't cost you much but make the customer feel less cheated. Like a tiny bit of Cole slaw,, macaroni salad, potato salad,, chips, or pickle. Like most sandwich shops do. I like the games everywhere, connect 4, uno and cards at every table. Very cute. Not sure I'll be back bc of taste. Also quality and choice of wrap (only plain) no spinach or whole wheat, is not enough for a sandwich shop at these prices. Thank you.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ COMPTON’S is the kind of neighborhood gem you want everyone to know about — but secretly hope stays just yours. The sandwiches are massive, flavor‑packed, and clearly made with care. From the turkey hero with lime aioli to the Jaclyn with eggplant, every bite hits that perfect bread‑to‑filling ratio. The Reuben is a must‑try, and their chop cheese deserves all the hype. What really sets COMPTON’S apart is the vibe: the owners make you feel welcome the second you walk in, and the service is as good as the food. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite at the counter or settling in at one of the few tables, you’ll leave full and happy.

I love it. The corn nuggets and the melts are my go tops. I most recently tried the Philly cheesesteak and it was savory. I like the restaurant style. Tgey have games you can play while you wait for your food to be freshly made. The staff is very welcoming and don't mind explaining the menu. I recommend to all my friends whenever they visit Cliffside Park, NJ. Keep up the good work and build one in Riverdale so I can have it more often.

Google
Good local sandwich place. The owners are honest people. My recommendation: consider selling half sandwiches on the menu and charge little more than half price. You'll attract more customers that way, and the half sandwich is already filling. Thank me later bros.

It's been a minute since I've come to Comptons and boy do they not disappoint at all. I ordered their Italian Cutlet and its so good, I couldn't stop eating. You guys just keep getting better and better. I wish I could take a photo but I remembered after I ate it all!

Google
Ordered delivery today for lunch…delicious! The tater tots transferred well - still warm & crispy. The red pepper aioli was flavorful with a touch of heat. Grilled chicken burrata so filling & fresh. Others enjoyed the berry smoothie, old fashioned, the Izzy. Everyone was pleased and we look forward to ordering again!

Yelp
5+ Stars here! Loved it! Small 4-5 unit chain; only one in NJ; This one located on a main street with plenty of shared parking behind the building. Clean, bright atmosphere. Met owner who was very nice and informative. Inside has approx 5 tables ( x4), each with a Connect Four game....also an arcade PacMan machine. Amazing assortment of breakfast and anytime sandwiches. Hot or Cold. BLTs or Parms, even the infamous Jersey Fat sandwiches are represented here ( called FCK Your Diet Sandwiches) Brand name sodas as well as a large collection of Boylan's sodas and other drinks. Good brand of assorted chips ( Kettle?) Breakfast sandwiches usually on a seeded Kaiser roll and the rest served on a seeded semolina hero that is baked & brought in from NY daily....it is perfect for these sandwiches; not too hard or soft.. Here are some that I tried: --The Christopher Sandwich ( hot sandwich) comes with hot roast beef, pepper jack cheese ( I changed it to provolone), onion rings, arugula and horseradish aioli. Served on a seeded semolina hero that is baked & brought in from NY daily....Amazing! everything so fresh; the perfect bread. Loads of ingredients, all the flavors underlined with tat Horseradish aioli....and it's named after ME! LOL great sandwich. --The Rob Sandwich (cold sandwich) with turkey, avocado, bacon, lettuce, tomato, red onion and lime aioli. ...Besides being Delish it felt so healthy as everything was so fresh! --Burrata Combo with Hot & Sweet Soppressata, Ham, Prosciutto, Burrata, Arugula & House Vodka Sauce. Served on a Seeded Semolina Hero. ( look at how packed the picture is) I dare you to read the menu and know what to choose right away. Bring friends to share!........I can't wait to try some of the other sandwiches. We need one of these near Paramus ( just not in a mall please!) HIGHly recommended!

Yelp
Ordered a hot sandwich for lunch and had no prior knowledge of this place. Am a cliffside park native and figured i would give it a try as I walked by. Place was very clean and decorated, few seats and menus everywhere. I ordered a hot sandwich and it was prepared immediately and quickly. I was a little skeptical because of high prices but after taking a few bites I justified it as ok. I was borderline 5stars but the bread was a little chewy for me although it overall had good flavor!!! It was a unique sandwich that i would recommend!

Yelp
Compton - A Welcome Addition to Cliffside Park Compton is a delightful new breakfast and sandwich shop located on Anderson Ave in Cliffside Park. I've tried both the Burrata BLT and the New Yorker egg sandwich so far--both were absolutely delicious. The ingredients are incredibly fresh, and the flavor profiles are superb--thoughtfully balanced and full of flavor. The space itself is immaculate and effortlessly cool, with a fun, nostalgic vibe thanks to an old-school Pac-Man arcade game and Connect Four boards on every table. They even sell some really cool merch that matches the shop's unique personality. Service is impeccable--friendly, fast, and welcoming. The owner is great and clearly passionate about what they do. Compton is a gem, and I'm excited to keep coming back

Yelp
Taking a star off because it is extremely inconvenient to pick up take out and the mishandling of an order that I wasted an hour trying to pick up. Tried to get take out through ubereats, which was canceled due to technical difficulties. I didn't receive notification until I was at the Comptons counter and they said they would make the meal as they could see it in the system. I said I was going to round the block since I was double parked, couldn't find parking so I called to ask for curbside handoff. They hadn't even started making the food I couldn't wait any longer. Not happy with this experience.

Yelp
Another quality visit to Comptons of Cliffside Park! This is a classic sandwich shop with quality ingredients. I ordered the Tuscany sandwich to go and was not disappointed. The fresh mozzarella, peppers, and arugula with balsamic on fresh Italian bread were simply amazing! The staff is super friendly and accommodating. Although a small sandwich shop, there's a decent amount of seating with classic board games to play. Thank you Comptons for being the best!

Yelp
The restaurant understands what makes food memorable. The team delivered service with precision. They run a restaurant that looks good and feels clean. The price point works for the food quality. Sample this spot - you'll become a repeat customer.

Yelp
I loved my hot sandwich and would definitely order it again. I got the Jaclyn (which has eggplant) and it was delicious. The sandwich is very filling and the bread to filling ratio is perfect (not too bready)! I ordered from their kiosk when you first walk in and waited about 10+ mins to for my order of 4 sandwiches to be ready. My husband ordered the Jimmy which he said was also great and my mother in law ordered the chicken burrata club. She loved her sandwich so much that she finished it all in one sitting. The shop has a few tables and standing/stool bar for those who want to dine in. I'll definitely be coming back as long as the quality of the sandwiches remain the same! :D

Yelp
My go to place , either for breakfast or lunch. I love their spicy chicken parm. For breakfast, I'll visit the store, but lunch it's Ubereats

Yelp
Happy to see Compton's make it to NJ. Classic breakfast sandwiches. I had the breakfast wrap which was amazing, and a latte old fashioned which was superb. Staff was supper cool and accommodating. Location is a really chill vibe and lots of natural sunlight looking out onto Cliffside park. Will definitely be back again!

Yelp
Not only is the staff and customer service amazing, the food was absolutely insanely good!!!! It's like you know you're a full, but you can continue to eat just because it's so good! I'm so glad that I learned that they are now in the city in Brooklyn! I can go anytime I want and get as full as I want! The chopped cheese is amazing and so is the Philly cheesesteak!!!! Those are must tries, and I guarantee you you'll be back for more! Well kept establishment as well!

Yelp
Absolutely delicious!!! They do not skimp on the cold cuts. My hubby got the vodka parm and he loved it as well. So happy we have a delicious sandwich shop in the neighborhood. Highly highly recommend!

Yelp

Yelp
Got recommended to come here by a friend and she was absolutely right! Always try something new when we come here and it never disappoints. Truly a gem.

Dayeim C.

Yelp
Pretty good, I've only had the Jacklyn twice . It's fresh, but fried eggplant is very oily.

Giuseppe B.

Yelp
Ordered The Greenpointer and Corn Nuggets on Uber eats. Good packaging, both traveled well.

Moon Joon C.

Yelp
I love when sandwiches are stacked and wrapped neatly! Just that little extra care makes all the difference! The place was clean, good selection of drinks and chips. Games to play while waiting. I Had the breakfast burrito which hit the spot and an everything egg but was already too full so it felt a little heavy. Still tasty though! Definitely want to go back and try more things off the menu.

Yelp
Sandwich was greasy and sloppily put together. Chicken fell out when you bit into it.

Yelp
So glad Compton's is now in NJ -- An incredible addition to the neighbourhood! Delicious sandwiches, kind and knowledgable staff, and a clean/fun atmosphere. Highly recommend the Burrata BLT & The Jaclyn - Y U M!

Yelp
Food was good. Service was fast and attentive. Ambiance was alright. I would go back and try another sub.

Yelp
Great addition to Cliffside Park's food scene on Anderson Avenue. Good vibes and delicious sandwiches. Hard to choose just 1 sandwich from the menu but went with their signature chopped cheese sandwich. The sandwich did not disappoint and looking forward to eventually trying them all!

Yelp
Tuna was excellent. Turkey hero with lime aioli was amazing. The bread is legit. I can't wait to try all the other sandwiches. Definitely worth the price and happy to have a great sandwich spot in the area.

Yelp
A much-needed shot in the arm to the same old local offerings. They have delicious sandwiches which offer unique combinations of ingredients and offer friendly service. I have visited three days in a row and each sandwich is better than the last. Today I had the "Jaclyn" - fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers, arugula, and fried eggplant - it can easily stand up to any Italian deli. They have a surprisingly large menu with sandwiches, burgers, and cheesesteaks. Can't wait until they expand their hours.

Joanne L.

Yelp
Fish sandwiches and chicken vodka parmesan sandwiches are delicious! The other sandwiches are great, too! This is our go-to sandwich place now! The staff was friendly, and the place had a chill vibe.

Yelp
Never knew about this place but visited because of the flyer circulating! Delicious sandwich! Worth every penny!

Jimmy W.

Yelp
The sandwich was above average but the prices are insane. 16 bucks for a hot sandwich? There are bodegas in the area selling the same thing for more than half the price. Again, the food is decent but the prices are absolutely crazy
