Best Pizza in Austin | Eater Austin

"Price: $$ For deep-pan pizza, Conans is the Austin answer. There are optional wheat crusts and plenty of vegan options, too. Build your own — be it deep or thin crust, or go for a house model. The Don’t Choke Art (fresh spinach, sliced tomatoes, artichoke hearts, and minced garlic) and Pesto (sliced tomatoes on pesto sauce) are winners. Inside and out, this place has the nostalgic pizza joint vibes of an old-school Pizza Hut, but it’s overflowing with tchotchkes and wall art. A second location up north, in Wooten, has the same corny but great vibes. Pickup orders can be placed online. Pro-tip: We love the deep-pan pies, but don’t overlook the thin crust. It’s pretty good." - Nadia Chaudhury

If I could give any restaurant a "golden buzzer" it would be this one. This is life changing. I developed a dairy allergy as an adult, and that sucks when you love pizza. I've discovered that when buying dairy free stuff, it's almost always gluten free. I came here and ordered a pizza with vegan cheese and 🥹 it was the best pizza I've had in a very long time. I was scared at first because the cheese isn't your typical unmelting vegan cheese. It looks real, but, I did not have an allergic reaction. (Sorry for the photo, this is all I had left, I devoured this)

Conan’s Pizza is a true Austin gem—a perfect mix of “Keep Austin Weird” and delicious deep-dish pizza. The moment you step inside, it feels like you’ve traveled back to 1985, with fantasy artwork straight out of an Arnold Schwarzenegger-era Conan movie. The retro vibes, dim lighting, and quirky décor make for a one-of-a-kind atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else. But let’s talk about the pizza—thick, cheesy, and packed with flavor. The deep-dish is a must-try, with a buttery crust that holds up to the generous toppings. The Savage is a personal favorite! Service is friendly and laid-back, just like the Austin spirit. If you’re looking for an old-school, local spot with character (and great pizza), Conan’s is it. A must-visit for anyone who loves Austin’s weird side and a great slice!

BY FAR THE BEST PIZZA IN TEXAS! (and to me the world.) As a wee lad my mom would always bring me here every time we came to Austin. Now I bring my wife here every time we're even close to Austin. Once I was near San Antonio heading back to central Texas, and I made an hour detour just to grab a deep dish Savage. (The same thing my mom and I would order.) i even sit in the same booth, every time in memory of her. Keep it real Conans

We came in at 1pm on a Friday. The restaurant was full of kids from Crocket. A fight broke out. They were throwing drinks at each other and ice and soda was all over the restaurant. The employees stood and watched the whole thing. No one said a word. For those of us that actually purchased pizza to enjoy our lunch we had ice and soda that got on myself and my husband. It took 30 minutes for our pizza to come out. The pizza was good. The experience was not. Kids that are hanging out and just buying a drink shouldn’t be a priority over patrons that are spending money and trying to eat lunch. One of the employees said this happens sometimes but it’s worth it. In my opinion it’s not worth it if you loose patrons to cater to misbehaved children. I’m very disappointed.

Was looking for pizza places in South Austin that also do vegan. Saw this place and was highly recommended on Google. Went on a Sunday evening and the menu is clearly labeled what is meat and what is veggies but love they have gluten free, wheat, and vegan cheese for anyone who can't eat meat or who's diet won't let them. The place looks very much stuck in the 80s which is awesome, it didn't seem very busy but we did wait awhile before getting part of our order. Besides the slower service, the food was actually good. Very greasy (if that's your thing) but good. I definitely want to try their deep dish next but for the thin crust, i did enjoy it. I had the spicy Hawaiian calzón and it was very cheesy but gloriously good for what I wanted. I do recommend this place for vegans and vegetarians as they have options for both especially with the vegan cheese option. I will note some of the veggie toppings felt like they were canned or pickled so not sure if 100% fresh.

Retro Conan the Barbarian decor. ✅ Pinball machines. ✅ Jukebox with awesome music. ✅ Ms. Pac-Man machine. ✅ Awesome pizza, wings, salads. ✅ ✅ ✅ You can also get beer on tap or in a bottle. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and friendly patrons! We love both Conan’s Pizza locations!!

Google
I’ll be completely honest, I hadn’t been to Conan’s since high school and I wanted to take my non-Austinite husband just because the vibe is so fun and unique, but we were impressed by the delicious pizza! I keep saying I’m not a big fan of Detroit style, I’m not a big fan of deep dish, but I just need to realize I love good pizza doesn’t matter the type XD We got a 10” Barbarian and it was plenty for the 2 of us. It was hot, absolutely stuffed with toppings, juicy (yeah that’s a weird pizza description but it was) and oh so satisfying! I don’t know how well the leftover piece will hold up and I don’t think I’d order it delivered, but fresh out of the oven it was delicious. The vibe of course was exactly what I had promised my husband, don’t take your kiddos if you are worried about them finding barely covered breasts in the table decor lol! The restaurant was pretty dead when we arrived but staff was friendly and attentive. We didn’t play any of the arcade games but it’s a fun option! My only very small complaint is the very limited beer menu, but no stars off for that it is what it is. I’ll definitely be back!

Yelp
Their pizza was delicious! I recommend ordering straight from the business though, NOT from a third party app/service. Had an issue with the delivery driver from a third party delivery service, Grub Hub. I chose the option to have the pizzas handed to me, but they left the pizza on the wet ground instead. Also there was a table right outside the door they could have put it on. Furthermore, the delivery person did not knock on the door as we were all in the living room, and lastly they did not update the delivery status until 40 minutes after it had been delivered and left on the wet ground while raining. WHO DOES THAT?!?! Needless to say, I contact both the third party delivery service, Grub Hub, and the store. I was refunded the money and one of the owners of Conan's took care of the pizza for us. He was upset as well, and called the company to file a complaint as well. So, FOOD DELISH! Order straight from their website/app or call them directly. DO NOT ORDER THROUGH YELP OR 3rd PARTY SERVICE!

Yelp
Killer pies and genuine hospitality. Thanks Jeremy and Team. All around great experience. This spot is one of the last strongholds of authentic Old School South Austin. Support these local gems, they're a dying breed. Whole Wheat Crust: 10/10 would bang again

Yelp
I went to Conan's on a first date, and it was a great location for a Sunday afternoon. Great 80s pizza parlor ambiance! I had the pepperoni & mushrooms on the house crust and it was very yummy. Crust was not over cooked and the sauce was tangy. The pinball tables hustled me, but I will continue pumping in quarters and get my revenge next time!! That Iron Maiden machine is very cool btw.
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
Great dough/ bread and fresh tasting tomato sauce! The pizza has a lottttt of cheese (not my jam) and the garlic bread was ok. They were really busy because of Thanksgiving holiday - we had to call twice to see where our pizza was because it was taking so long to be delivered. Probably just a one-off because of the holiday, but felt it was worth mentioning.

Yelp
Placed a large lunch order for a company lunch with 20+ different pizzas. Every one of them were correct and tasted amazing! We were very pleased with the service and management. Jeremy was extremely helpful and professional when assisting me with the order.

Yelp
Love their deep dish pizza. Excellent. Pepperoni and mushroom is my favorite and they made awesome homemade ranch too.

Yelp
Way over an hour for delivery. $40 for a cold pizza. Never again. The same thing happened last time. No more chances.

Yelp
Fun vibes love the arcade games and the theme... but the pizza ain't great... not terrible but not great. Crust texture was better when I heated up leftovers in my air fryer. Go for beers and video games and nostalgia....

Yelp
Not Chicago style pizza! I have been searching for Chicago style pizza for awhile now. I called Conan's to inquire. Jeremy said they make a Chicago style but not stuffed pizza. He said there were a lot of toppings under the cheese. I thought I would give them a try. I called back and spoke with another employee that said they had a deep dish pizza so I ordered a Hamburger Deep Dish pizza. The pizza was about 10 to 12 inches across and 1 inch height. The crust was not very thick. Deep dish should be thicker than this. There was not a lot of hamburger meat. The cheese and sauce were decent. I was very disappointed in spending $22 on this pizza. I ate one slice and threw it away. Actually I found a homeless person and gave it to her. She may or may not have thrown it away. I give plenty of rave reviews for places that deserve it Jeremy and speak my truth on places that do not. I don't like to waste money on something I can't stomach.

Mark R.

Yelp
Tried Conan's for the first time yesterday and we were not disappointed! Had a deep dish vegetarian with pepperoni and sausage. While waiting sat and spoke with a long time customer and Jeremy, one of the owners. The customer told me I would be happy and I was. The pizza was tasty and the wheat crust was done well. Coming from Chicago (and growing up in NY - both cities having great pizza) we have yet to find a good deep dish pie in Austin. Conan's -although a 25 minute drive- will be my go to place now!! If I were to make any suggestion it would be to add more sauce and make the sausage pieces larger! Kudos to Jeremy and his staff! By the way he is a very personable young man and after speaking with him while I waited, he seems to have all the right stuff when it comes to business and customer service!!

Yelp
I was craving pizza and needed something new. I don't know I have missed the opportunity of trying Conans and I even went to high school across the street forever ago. I ordered online, when I arrived it was slow so pickup was easy. I ordered the pizza with garlic and it did not disappoint. I like that the garlic is chopped up and crispy like the pizza and not while cloves like other pizzas serve. I would say it is on the pricier end, I got a a medium pizza and paid like $22 with side of ranch. Will be buying again in the near future.

Yelp
I always forget about this place and I stumble upon it and wonder why I don't go more often. I've been going to the original location since I was in middle school and now visit the south location when in the area. This visit I tried the regular pan pizza (?) whatever it wasn't the deep dish and it was delicious! The crust was good and crispy even when taking it to go.

Yelp
Easy fast service. First time using their app. Only took 20-30 mins for order to be completed

France M.

Yelp
The food is good the thin crust is my favorite, sadly I go to the school by this place and 2 of the workers hit on all the high school girls I got hit on a bunch of times my sophomore year after he asked my age. The vibe is cool as long as ur not a young girl and the cashier is the guy with tattoos or the weird looking one, because if u are and u see them they will try to give u free food and talk to u. Everyone says how creepy the can be so watch out please.
google avatar

Bella W.

Yelp
This place has always been great. All south Austin natives know! It's the sauce for me. I've also always gotten hot and fresh food. Been eating here since high school.

Ryan P.

Yelp
Cockroach on the window seal took like 40 minutes to make two pizzas will never be coming back here

Guliana R.

Yelp
Love the customer service! Food is so good nice and hot to order I've come here two times in the last week and half it's honestly an Austin gem and it needs to be talked about more ! The energy and vibe here is amazing feels like a jump back into time !

Yelp
I've eaten Conan's for decades now, and they have never let me down. This Friday I called in to place a pick-up order because the family needed a treat. It's F1 weekend, traffic terrible, etc. The owner Jeremy took my order, and my wife & kid stopped by to pick it up. Well, something went wrong, and the order vanished. I called Jeremy to make sure I wasn't crazy, and we were both mystified as to what happened. My wife was not up for waiting another 30mins, and even though we are now out of their delivery area, Jeremy told her to go home & personally drove the pizza to our house. He went out of his way to make sure we were taken care of, that we were fed without being stressed about it. He not only "made it right", but went well above & beyond. When the pizza arrived? It was great as always. Conan's has been, and will always be one of favorite places in Austin. Great people, great pizza.

Yelp
Something has changed at Conan's South. Now I'm sure I was a dumbass when I wrote my previous review here. The raw pizza dough did suck but I should have been a bit more understanding given how many toppings I had on my pizza at the time. Since that experience I've gone back multiple times and had nothing but amazing experiences. I love the arcade machines scattered throughout the establishment set to free play. I love their new T-shirt designs. I love the new nicer Frazzetta murals. What I really love however is their amazing pizza. The thin crust is probably some of my favorite hand tossed in the whole city right now. The deep dish "savage" is a real treat. I dont know if it was me slipping when I wrote the bad review here or Conan's, suffice to say I was wrong. Conan's is amazing eat here order to go from here get delivery from here.
google avatar

Shane C.

Yelp
Well, Conans South has gone back to sucking again! 1.5hr delivery time. Pizza is lukewarm. Wings are cold. About 10 minutes before they showed up, I called the store. Me: I ordered a pizza an hour and a half ago. I'm calling to find out where it is? Them: Yeah? Well, the driver just left. Why even bother? I'll go back to getting pizza elsewhere.

Rhonda T.

Yelp
The "deep dish" pizza is NOT deep dish. It is the equivalent of a hand tossed pizza crust, which makes this pizza VERY OVERPRICED. Ordered it to go. When I went back to the store to voice my displeasure, with pictures, to ask is this what they call their "deep dish", the guy just shrugged his shoulders and said he would write the date down of my order. Wow! They don't stand behind their product!!! Now grant it their sauce really MAKES the pizza. But advertising deep dish is false advertisement and definitely not worth the high price tag!
google avatar

Darren C.

Yelp
Delectable pesto pie! The wife and kids were pleased with my spontaneous Tuesday pie pickup. Cheers!

Yelp
It's like coming home! A true Austin favorite!! Get some Conan's tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
Food is always amazing. An incredible Austin institution with a great owner who cares about the city.

Yelp
Best pizza joint in South Austin hands down. Old school vibe with a few video games and cool pics from the day
google avatar

Shama P.

Yelp
It's just never quite where it needs to be in my experience. There's better pizza of similar quality in town. If you need a quick bite, good for take out. Not much for going out of your way for though.
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
We ordered takeout from here the other day. One pizza (pepperoni and ham), and some of the cheesy/garlic bread. Food: 2.5/5 Cheese bread - was alright, average to below average for my taste. Pizza (Chicago style deep dish) - again average, i felt like the crust could have been better and ingredients fresher. Ambiance: 3.5/5 Classic American pizza place feeling on the inside. I liked that they had little nooks where you could feel some level of privacy despite the small indoor space. Overall it was good for Chicago style pizza, but don't think I would rate it above average compared to others I've had.
google avatar

Brittney B.

Yelp
10-15 years ago Conan's was a 4. It's been quite sometime since I've eaten here and for no particular reason since they used to be great. I ordered tonight and was completely shocked by how the quality has dropped. Deep dish is no longer deep. Refer to photo. I ordered a deep cheese pizza and a thin bbq chicken. Also ordered a piece of cake but I didn't get it thanks to Uber eats driver. Anyway, the location on the drag used to really deliver a great pizza. Now this place is a shell of it's old self sadly.
google avatar

Vince C.

Yelp
The pizza tasted like a mix between your memory from your grade school food line and that from Chucky cheeses. It's not Chicago pizza, perhaps an imitation... The pizza overall was bland in flavor, the cheese ripped off like a bed sheet with the first bite leaving the bare sauced bread to stand naked. Thankfully there was extra parmesan to save the day. South Austin has no good Pizza spots, Jets is passable. The location is rad but I wish some of the nostalgia inside could be traded away for better quality ingredients given the cost of the pies. Next time Marcos pizza will do if stuck south.

Yelp
Slice Slice Baby! Highlights: *Freshly Made Dough *House made Ranch *Variety of Crusts and Toppings Review: This is not your ordinary pizza spot, you must come hungry and ready to eat. The Deep Pan Meaters pizza did not disappoint it was a perfect combination salty from the mozzarella cheese, savory from all the meats and all balanced by the sweet tanginess from the pizza sauce. The crust was a perfect foundation thicc, crunchy exterior, soft interior and buttery. Also they got that good ranch, the one you know you'll probably double dip in. You can really taste the freshness and the passion they put in their food. I can't wait to come back and grab another slice. Rating: 10/10 Large Deep Pan Meaters Pizza: White crust with pizza sauce, sausage, hamburger, pepperoni, canadian bacon and topped with mozzarella cheese For more reviews go check out my blog: https://www.instagram.com/p/CHVucuWnZuc/?igshid=ajcq6v5wigpw https://www.facebook.com/OnceUponATac0/

Yelp
This place is gross, it's just not good pizza at all. I will not order from here again.

Yelp
Shirk is a jerk. Food has gone downhill quickly; as well as service. You've taken a gem, and turned it into shit. The '45 makes a major pass on you. And you know what, it's not the fact that product sucks, it's your attitude. You need your ass checked.Savage PizzaSavage Pizza

Yelp
Damn Yelp! 3 stars overall?? Tough crowd. Not sure why though. Walking into this place is like walking back in time. I walked in and thought I was at the Regal Beagel. Dated, 70's furniture and decor-how can you not love it? The tables were even better; covered in old Heavy Metal Magazine art under a thick, yellowish, layer of epoxy. Super retro! Sorry not sorry vegetarians - ordered the Veggie Supreme - WITH BACON. It was freaking amazing. The crunchiness from the onions, bell peppers, jalapenos perfectly contrasted with the chewiness from the shrooms, pineapple, tomatoes and cheese. You had sweet and spicy, crunchy and soft, hot and not hot (onions were chopped but still kinda raw which was awesome)! The dough, with all that mountain of veggies on top, held up extremely well. The outer crust came in a twiat that reminded me of garlic knots. This was my fave as it was crunchy on the outside and so soft on the inside! My only complaint was that they were out of lemonade. No Arnold Palmer for me. That iced tea was great though. Their salada were the perfect temp and their salad dressings were pheNOMS. Definitely want to go back and try the rest of the menu.
google avatar

Frances Q.

Yelp
WOW! So generous! The amount of toppings on our Savage Pizza was so satisfying, my husband ( who can put away 3/4 of a large)only had 3 slices, all he could handle, amazing!
google avatar

Barbara T.

Yelp
Haven't had Conan's since it was our hangout in high school. Was going to share this with the guy at the counter but then decided he couldn't care less about my reminiscing of the old days 40 years ago since it was closing time Seemed a little expensive until I read an article the next day on how much the price pizza ingredients have increased. Otherwise still a good hot pizza with quality ingredients!
google avatar

Annette A.

Yelp
My fiancée lives and breathes Conans pizza. We have yet to find another pizza place that has wheat pizza. So when she craves it we drive an 1 hour to come get one! Yes it's that great
google avatar

Kember O.

Yelp
I've been coming here since I was in high school back in the 80s. Even though this location is under new ownership, they haven't changed the menu at all, so you get exactly what you remember. The staff is friendly and the food is awesome. I'm do glad they didn't try to fix what wasn't broken!

Brian C.

Yelp
Service was fantastic and everyone working there was very helpful. Our whole family loved the cheese bread and the house ranch was awesome. My family wasn't a big fan of the supreme veggie but I loved it. We'll definitely be back again to try another pizza!
google avatar

Sonal G.

Yelp
Conan's came highly recommended from a family member as one of their favorite pizza places in Austin but unfortunately did not live up to the hype for me and especially not for the price and wait time. Totally get how busy they are which is always a good sign, but then you have to predict better wait times for online orders - we waited a full extra hour for our pizza after ordering online 30 min prior to arrival. Already set a bad precedent. And as far as flavor, it was a pretty standard deep dish pizza with nothing too special with very bready, dense crust that was not particularly palatable. Most of it went to waste for us. Given that the price was about the same as higher end pizza in the ATX area that is much much better quality, don't think we will be coming back unfortunately. Definitely good for some, but not really for us.
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
Came here because my boyfriend wanted to try it out. Had heard about this being one of the best deep dish places in Austin. Picked up a large pepperoni and jalapeño pie and took it home. Staff is nice and love to support a local business, but I was not impressed what so ever by this pizza. Very very bland, cardboard taste, jalapeños really were the only flavor that elevated the pie. Not enough sauce and just way too much bread. I'm a fan of deep dish and would recommend Jets Pizza over this place. Like I said 2 stars because it's a local business and I like to support the community but overall a major disappointment! 10/10 wouldn't recommend.

Damian G.

Yelp
Awful service, dismal ambiance. Pizza place to avoid; it lacks charm and customer care.
google avatar

Brandi H.

Yelp
There is very little in this world better than a deep dish Savage pizza. It's the perfect combination of slightly sweet, savory, spicy, crunch and hot ooey gooeyness. And now, I'm hungry. Seriously though, the pizza is utterly fantastic. The service is also phenomenal. The owners and the staff genuinely care about my experience and satisfaction. My Dad would take me to the 29th & Guadalupe location to pick up dinner as a little kid and I was utterly terrified and fascinated by everything in the store. Conan's has been part of my family for as long as I can remember. And now, I feel like I am part of their family.
google avatar

Shahrzad Y.

Yelp
Wasnt sure what to expect since I'm a bit picky about pizza and actually don't have it often. I was pleasantly surprised. Got a veggie deep dish and though it was saucier than i would've liked, it was delicious. What i liked most about it that is that it was filled with toppings and you couldn't count the number of mushrooms for example lol. A bit overpriced but i guess everything is now! Recommend for sure!
google avatar

Ian G.

Yelp
Conan's had been a respite for me growing up. And it still is. This pizza, The Savage, was a favorite of my Tío Paco. He moved to California in the early '80s but would still come back every so often to visit. It was he who introduced me to this pizza. And it is for him ,and my BELLY, that I eat it now. Yall must eat this pizza. Not mine, though. Go buy your own.

Richard L.

Yelp
Great quality pizza like we enjoyed visiting NY City back in the day. Local spot in south Austin thats thrived for good reason!
google avatar

Darci J.

Yelp
Always hits the spot. Plus amazing bonus that they still have pinball & arcade games like the true classic pizza place it is we love Conans
google avatar

Daniel C.

Yelp
An Austin staple. Been going since I was a kid and it still one of my favs. Spicy Hawaiian is must try.

Bal F.

Yelp
Whomever rates Conans Pizza any less than 5 stars either has no tastebuds or has not ordered a whole wheat Savage pan pizza. It is not just pizza but a religious experience. The best on the planet. Always great. Been going there for over 40 years and it is still amazing. If you can find something better than this you are dead and in heaven!

Yelp
I've been a fan of Conan's Pizza since the late 80's. Recently returned to Austin and tried the Gluten Free crust.. It was just the way I remembered it ... without the gluten. What a throwback. The night I was there it was quiet and felt homey. Service was friendly.
