The Best Restaurants in Richmond, Virginia | Eater DC

"Helmed by Mexico City-born chef Danny Mena, Conejo’s kitchen mills heirloom corn daily for their fresh tortillas, which anchor the menu’s street food offerings like tuna-topped tostados de pescado and crispy taquitos, as well as their seasonal selection of tacos. Conejo’s gorgeous bar is the ideal seat for enjoying their vast collection of agave spirits for a perfect margarita. Mena is part-owner in mezcal producers Pelotón de la Muerte and Mezcal de Leyendas and also runs Brooklyn’s Mexican eatery Le Loncheria." - Stephanie Ganz

Went to Conejo as part of restaurant week and was impressed by the service and the food. It is one of those places where sometimes the sides out match the main part of the dish. Loved my queso with chorizo but the chips were lacking somehow on taste. For my main was a cochinita pibil which had a very tender pork belly but the refried beans and homemade tortillas were the stars. For desert there was no choice between the tres leches or chocolate mousse, which the tres leches was very good. Our server Colin was attentive but not frequent in his checking in at our table. The biggest problem I had was just how loud it was. Hard to have a conversation without raising voices, but would recommend at least a try for other folks.

It's always a pleasure to dine at Conejo - good ambiance, delicious and authentic Mexican food, and corn tortillas to die for! Unsure of what to order? Try the Costras - big flour tortilla tacos with caramelized cheese. Alambre and Gobernador are winners. The tacos are also an obvious choice; I love the carnitas and suadero. Also, I had the fideos with cheese as a small side and I really liked it too! Don't sleep on the specials: the other day they had mushroom memelas as well as a scallop dish, and they both were a hit with the group I dined with. As to dessert, do yourself a favor and have the flan. You won't regret it!

I'll preface I'm well traveled (all of Central America but Belize) and my wife has lived in Honduras, Mexico, and Venezuela, Japan, and the U.S. Been here twice. Inside was nice 1st visit, but outside was awesome--great vibe either way so ambiance and atmosphere are pretty and pleasant. This time, I had the caeasar salad (kale) with carnitas--omg, best carnitas ever, crisp and moist. My wife got the chicken--same perfection and mushroom beds were fun to dig into. We love the trio of hot sauces, but they are hot on a VA scale, not Mexico, Indian, Thai, or silly Ghost scale. Beans and rice--excellent. You really need the hot sauce trio to play w all your food, not just a chips and salsa thing, as these are amazing flavor vehicles by themselves despite the tamed heat for VA paletes. Previously we had tried the Queso Flamaedo (excellent) and the fish--amazing special--and taquitos...the later was ok but we loved the rest and had to come back for my bday. Service was stellar. Our fave place w Lolitas. We'll be back again and again.

Google
There are so many good things to eat here, and they are excellent about indicating gluten free items on the menu. Excellent service and we love the patio almost year-round. Favorites: any tamales on the specials menu, both mocktails, their ceviches, and the birria tacos (maybe my favorite birria in Richmond). The tostados de pescado are the only thing I've ever disliked there. Much saltier than necessary.

Came here after work around 6 PM. The sun and rise was my favorite drink (the cinnamon set it off!) I had the quesarria tacos and esquites. The tacos were delicious especially dipped in the consomme. They almost looked burnt but it wasn’t. The flavor was there. The esquites were an acquired taste but I like corn so no harm in trying something new.

Google
Great vibe just walking in. Dined for brunch here on my first visit. I had heard that the ceviche was good here so we had to try and it certainly lived up to its hype. Brunch cocktails were refreshing and complemented the food very well. The beef birria and tuna fish tacos were tasty. Be sure to experience the fresh home made salsa trio with your meal—each are unique and worth trying. My favorite was the medium spicy green. The birria de polo burrito was also amazing. Service was excellent with a very attentive server. Highly recommend!

Google
It was fine. Nothing special though. The salsa trio was tasty, but chips are extra. My drink (the Gloria) was good, but weak and mostly ice. The chicken taco my daughter ordered was literally a piece of chicken on a tortilla with no toppings (she’s 8; if they were making a judgement about what she wouldn’t like, be it vegetables or spicy flavors, they should instead ask; she likes both). The rest of our meal was fine, but again, nothing special.

Yelp
While plenty of neighborhood places serving classic Tex Mex fare reside in the Richmond metro area, few that focus on more modern flavors exist. Furthermore, Mexican places that have a decent, outing-worthy ambiance also remain elusive. Conejo remarkably offers both contemporary Mexican flavors in pleasant surrounds, and does to great benefit. My family and I dined at Conejo for a recent Saturday brunch. We dug the bright, sunny ambiance of the restaurant that felt modern and fun. A large, shaded patio is available for outdoor dining, but we opted for an indoor table. We started with the esquites and the guacamole as appetizers. The guacamole was fresh, but could have benefited from a bit more lime and salt. The tortilla chips served alongside arrived freshly fried, and carried a pleasantly nutty and toasty corn flavor from the house ground masa. We dug the better seasoned esquites which possessed the perfect balance of creamy mayo and cheese cut by lime and chili. I sampled a decent cross section of Conejo's brunch menu and enjoyed each bite. My personal favorite was my own order: a classic but quality breakfast burrito stuffed with tender brisket, fluffy eggs, fried potatoes, and beans and wrapped in a flaky, homemade flour tortilla. My father's chilaquiles offered plenty of those great corn tortilla chips perfectly bathed in tangy green enchilada sauce and topped with tender, pulled chicken. The enfrijoladas my brother in law ordered won praise for a rich, creamy black bean sauce and tasty tortillas. My wife's chorizo and egg tacos, while on the basic side, benefited from the great corn tortillas and well seasoned sausage. Special mentioned should be made for the three, complimentary homemade salsas on offer. Each variety, which included a rich salsa macha, a tangy verde, and a spicy roja, nicely perked up the flavors of the food while being good enough to eat on their own. On a similarly good note, our service ran smoothly. Despite the restaurant getting somewhat busy by the time our meal concluded, our waiter remained consistently attentive and hospitable. Amazingly, the most expensive item we ordered was $15 and our bill totaled just under $100 even after tip. For five people to dine for less than $20 a head for quality food, great ambiance, and solid service is a steal. As such, Conejo earns four stars for their modern Mexican offerings, and a fifth for value, hospitality, and vibes.

Yelp
Arrived during Happy Hour on a Friday. Was surprised to see that there was only two tables occupied, and a few seats at the bar. Throughout our visit, the restaurant did fill up a little more, but was never near full. The decor is fun and colorful and the restaurant has many windows letting in a lot of natural light which gives it an airy feel. We tried several things off of the Happy Hour menu. I had the Paloma to drink, and my husband had the Margarita, his first was classic with house tequila, and his second and third were with mezcal which he preferred. I liked the flavor of both cocktails, but they were very weak. We also tried the Taquitos (with beef) off the Happy Hour menu which were our favorite thing we tried (along with the house chips and salsa appetizer). The complimentary salsa trio was good also, I specifically really enjoyed the hottest one (orange). From the main menu, we tried the fish tacos, shrimp tacos, and tuna tostada appetizer. We also tried the Aguachile from the specials menu. The tuna tostada appetizer was strange both in presentation and in flavor/taste. The "dried" hibiscus is burnt and looks like dirt atop of fried leeks which are reminiscent of worms. It tasted overpowering and not in a good way. It's almost like too many components and too much "creativity" that it was not enjoyable in our opinion. The Aguachile provided a similar experience as it was overwhelmingly acidic and sour. It was edible but it could've been better balanced and dialed back as it pertained to certain components/ingredients. I tried the fish tacos because I saw many reviews that suggested that they were a favorite for Conejo diners. Unfortunately, I did not agree with the masses. The fish itself had a lot of blood lines which made it have a more fishy flavor than fish tacos I have had in the past. I liked the toppings, but that was about it. I didn't like the corn tortillas, although I typically don't, so I asked to switch it out for a flour tortilla (after trying it with the corn, mostly because I forgot to ask) and was surprised that the flour tortilla was wheat and not white. My husband did really enjoy the shrimp tacos but I did not personally try them. Overall, it just felt like the food was trying to be something it wasn't and it was just falling short. Sometimes, it's okay to just have what guests are going to want and fall back a little on the creativity. The flavors lacked balance most of all. Our server was nice and we didn't wait very long for anything. Multiple other staff members briefly checked on us throughout our visit so it was nice to feel that the team genuinely cared about our experience. Unfortunately, the food and the beverages just didn't match up to the ambiance and service.

Yelp
We gave Conejo another try recently. We tried the tacos and had a nice dining experience. Nice ambiance. Fast and friendly service. Nice to see Conejo leadership take an active role to help make the dining experience wonderful for their patrons with an eye on continuous improvement -- which we appreciate. They tend to get busy on the weekends, so we'd suggest making a rez.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times now, and seriously enjoyed it on each occasion. Nothing on the menu so far has been a miss and we have tried many things, though the suadero taco, the Kale Caesar, and the queso have stood out as favorites. I absolutely love being able to mix and match tacos, a great way to get some variety and try something new. Plus, pro-tip, that birria broth is good with any of the tacos in a selection. The service here has always been really friendly as well. The place is clean and inviting, and I just love the way it feels. It can get a bit loud inside, and I prefer to sit outside when it's not 17 degrees like it's been this past week. Overall, seriously worth a reservation, and can't wait to stop in again.

Yelp
Visiting Conejo was the best! I've heard so many good things about this restaurant and now I understand why. I love the cute ethics, vibe, and fun decor. Additionally, our server was so kind and helpful with explaining menu items and answering any questions that me and my friend had. We shared the Sopes with Prok Carnitas, which were absolutely delicious and highly recommended appetizer. I loved my entree of le Broccoli Tacos. The tacos come in sets of two but you can order a third for half the price and can even mix & match taco flavors. Lastly, I can't encourage you to get the churros enough! They were perfect blend of cinnamony, sugary, warm, and crispy. This is a great place for a girls night, date night, or birthday dinner. It's located in Libby Mill so there's plenty of parking options and shopping options nearby for a fun day or evening.

Yelp
The service was excellent here. We wanted to try the sauces, so she gave us some chips on the house. My favorites were the roja and verde sauce. The food was really good too. We finished it all within 15 minutes. The beef and broccoli tacos were excellent. I only gave it a four because the portions were so small. I understand the tacos being small because you pay per taco but surprised the enchiladas were small. But overall chill vibes, we sat on the patio and it was peaceful, inside looks nice too.

Yelp
Conejo is by far one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in RVA. This time around I went with my two siblings, and sister-in-law. Given that we were still pretty full after a wonderful Thanksgiving meal, we kept things simple yet delicious and ordered the ceviche clásico and the queso fundido. As always, the ceviche did not disappoint-- delicious rockfish, wonderful mixture of citrus from the tomatoes and limes, with enough spicy to spice things up. The tortilla chips are GF, which I love and always each more than I should. This was my first time, trying the queso fundido. I must say I am normally not a big fan of chorizo, but this dish definitely changed my perspective. The cheese is blended well with the chorizo and melted to perfection. My only complaint was my drink. I asked for light ice, and got a lot less drink (see image). Normally, this is an a problem, and the bartenders fill up the entire glass, but I guess this is the Conejo way. Great location, great vibes, and always a good time!

Yelp
Since opening, Conejo has risen to the top of my list for Mexican cuisine in Richmond. The menu goes beyond the usual authentic staples, infusing flavor and textures. I have loved everything I've tried here. The service is stellar, and the interior is colorful and bright. The menu is simple to digest, and there is a lot of potential for sharing if that's your thing! My favorite is their mix and match tacos that allow you to get a spread of different proteins. The fish tacos are crisp and flavorful, the birria and quesabirria are incredible and even the vegetarian broccoli taco is stellar. The seasonal ceviches are also great! And the grapefruit based mocktail is delicious.

Yelp
This spot was delicious! A unique and refreshing take on Mexican. We tried a number of plates and they got increasingly tasty.

Yelp
What a delicious surprise. After reading the Yelp reviews I had to give this place a shot and it did not disappoint! Light, bright, fun and contemporary Mexican atmosphere, the executive chef is from Mexico City and you can tell. Bright flavors with incredibly fresh ingredients made this the best dinner I have had thus far in Richmond! What a fabulous happy hour to boot! $8 Paloma's and flavor filled taquitos?! I'll be dreaming about that smoky salsa until I return next month! Do yourself a favor and sit at the bar, the people are fun and friendly and the bartender is amazing! You will be glad you did!

Yelp
Why has it taken me so long to review Conejo?! Came highly recommended by coworkers and have met friends here often for happy hour. Their classic margaritas are really good and pack quite the punch. Their taquitos and queso/guac that they have on the happy hour menu are more than enough to make a meal out of, even if splitting with a friend. Everything I've had here has been AMAZING. Hands down my favorite happy hour spot this year!

Yelp
Great food and service. Atmosphere was great but you know those modern aesthetics don't filter enough room noise, so noise sensitive people beware. Go at lunch or afternoon because the food is serious great! Park in the hotel deck. Much easier. I'll be back there.

Yelp
We went to Conejo recently for a Friday night dinner. First, I definitely recommend a reservation. This place was hopping! Thankfully with a reservation we were seated pretty quickly. The decor is cute with a definite beachy sort of vibe or color scheme -- lots of pastels. For dinner, we ordered the Sopes and queso appetizers. The chips that come with the queso are nice and thick. You also get three salsas to try for the table. My favorite was the dark red one which was smoky without too much spice. For dinner I ordered the de suadero or brisket tacos. I cannot recommend these enough, this was my favorite menu item. I also tried the shrimp/gobernador costra, very yummy! All in all we had a great experience at conejo and I would recommend.

Yelp
I ordered conejo to go since I'd heard great things. It's a more elevated Mexican menu, not your typical flavors and meals. Inside is so cute, I loved the design and the open space. I got quesabirrias and a side of rice and beans. It took maybe 15 mins to be made and ready. It was a busy night, but the bartender still got me water while I waited. Everything was really good and flavorful! I'll definitely be back to dine in and try other items.

Yelp
OMG can I say how much I loved everything about this place. When you walk in everyone was super nice and happy to help. The restaurant was absolutely beautiful. The decor and all of the real plants inside and outside where won me over. We sat inside but I am definitely going back to sit outside and enjoy the view while I try some of their other dishes along with a margarita. I ordered the Baja Shrimp tacos and they were amazing. They had a roasted jalapeno aioli, pickled cabbage, and pico de gailo on it. Ya'll I never had pickled cabbage and it was soooooo good; next time I want some extra on the side The complimentary homemade dipping sauces where so good. I really enjoyed them all but I absolutely loved the spicy one. I would 100% recommend if you love Mexican cuisine on another level to come try it for yourself. This place is great for all occasions; day or night date, solo date, or a friends date it is a win! I will be going back soon. I added some photos of the food we ordered. My daugther in law had the burrito and it look good. She left no crumbs so I'm thinking it was delicious.

Yelp
This was our first time here and WOW it was soooo good! The vibe inside is perfect for any occasion and so beautiful! Our server was amazing and had great recommendations. The food came out fairly quickly and was fresh and very tasty. They have some of the best shrimp tacos I have ever had! The drinks were delicious and their frozen mango margarita is one of the BEST I have ever had and I'm a huge margarita girl. I would recommend this place a million times over.

Yelp
such a cute little mexican restaurant in richmond!! its very chic and modern inside which i love. service was great and the food (&margs) were delightful. *frozen mango marg- very flavorful and not too sweet which i appreciated *baja shrimp taco -- flavorful and refreshing!! i would definitely order again *baja fish taco -- i liked the shrimp version a tad bit more but this was still excellent *quesabirria taco -- very decadent! super yummy but its very rich so i'm glad my other tacos were more zesty and light. 5/5 experience here :)

Yelp
The ambiance was immaculate; it's really well decorated and a great place to have either an intimate date or a large gathering. The food wasn't anything particularly memorable, but it was quite good. Everything is served in tapas-size to encourage you to try more things. I had only tried the Baja and Carnitas tacos because I had had a heavy lunch earlier, but I would get them again. The 3 salsas on the house are all really good and seem unique to this restaurant, so would definitely recommend trying them. I think next time I'd also try las costras and esquites.

Yelp
Went here a couple of months ago and my fiancé and I talk about coming back all the time. We loved it! I had heard good things from friends and we finally came for dinner and wow, what a great place. The space is beautiful and colorful, felt very welcoming without being overwhelming. Our food and drinks were delicious, really looking forward to trying their brunch sometime too
google avatar

Connie T.

Yelp
Everything was great! We enjoyed all the food and drinks. The fish taco was my favorite. You have to get a dessert, you can't go wrong with any of them. The service was top notch. The place itself is beautiful and super clean. Reservations can be made on Resy. I highly recommend going during happy hour from 4:30-6pm M-F. I included a photo of the happy hour menu since I couldn't find any details on their website or Instagram. It includes tacos, guac, queso fundido, and a variety of drinks.

Yelp
For a night out with friends we decided to try Conejo after seeing the strong reviews. The decor inside is beautiful. The margarita was delicious and fresh although I would order it without salt in the future. The servers were great, very attentive and enjoyable! We had the Queso Fundido to start with a mix of flour and corn tortillas. The three salsas were all tasty. For entrees we had Gobernador, Baja, de brocoli and de Carnitas. All of it was amazing. We were all very surprised at how delicious it was. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Our server was very professional and attentive. They were having some issues with their tablets being able to place orders, but a manager promptly came by to apologize for the delay in receiving our drinks and appetizers and let us know what was going on, which I really appreciated. The salsa was good, the chips could have used a little bit of salt. I was disappointed we never received the salsa trio, so we didn't get to try the other house salsas. We enjoyed the taquitos and our tacos, which were flavorful, came out very hot, and tasted nice and fresh. The ambience is really cute; it's a beautiful, modern restaurant space with plenty of seating. They are incredibly busy though, and we've discovered it's tough to get a weekend reservation if you don't call in advance. The only odd thing about the decor is that they have large curtains inside the front door, which they had pulled part way shut when we entered, and even further shut when we exited. I'm not sure if they're trying to stop cold air drafts, but I've never seen that approach before... it was strange. I'd be happy to come back again, perhaps when it's warm outside to enjoy sitting on the patio since the inside of the restaurant was pretty packed (with tables seated close together) and loud.

Katelyn M.

Yelp
I'm giving two stars simply because the service was wonderful. Our waitress was very sweet and attentive. The ambiance was nice, but very much NOT traditional. It was just... whitewashed Mexican decor. Cute, but unexpected. This also raised some red flags about how authentic the food was going to be the moment we walked in. We ordered chips and queso, it was nontraditional but pleasant. In our opinion, it was not as good as traditional chips and queso, but still pleasant. Everything went severely downhill once we got our entrees. We got quesabirria tacos and baja shrimp tacos. There's only two tacos per plate with no sides included. I kid you not, the tacos were SO SMALL. They could've fit in the palm of my boyfriend's hand. The flavor was good, but it was genuinely three bites per taco and then they were gone. The sides were A DISASTER. I got arroz verde and they were genuinely mush. I could've not chewed at all and been fine. They were so bad that we got them sent back and refunded. My boyfriend got this "Mexican spaghetti" that he equated to someone's random overcooked leftover spaghetti with a tiny bit of sour cream and parmesan cheese on top. It was cursed. We got refunded for that too. Now let me clear some things up -- my boyfriend and I have a high appreciation for all cuisine, especially Mexican cuisine. I rarely ever write reviews, but this was just NOT it. Being a Hispanic myself, I was so incredibly disappointed at the food. I could also tell that the Mexican family sitting near us was disappointed as well. Simply put, I am writing this to let you know that this the OPPOSITE of the large menu, generous portions, and tasty authentic food that is very common in authentic Mexican restaurants. If you're looking for whitewashed Mexican food, then this is the place for you, all others beware.

Yelp
Why did we wait so long to try here!? We have been missing out! Came here for lunch on a weekend with family and it was absolutely amazing. Staff was friendly and could throughly explain the menu. Love the kids menu and that my kids liked everything! (That's a win right?) Drinks: get you a frozen margarita. The mango was my favorite and coconut was my husband's favorite.. oh did I mention they are real boozy? Woah. The queso app, shrimp taco, and carnitas were fire. Came back again just with the adults and sat at the bar. Devin was one of the best bartenders we have had in such a long time. She sent us out fresh tortillas to try and told us about Rosa who handmakes them each day. Go Rosa! Thr Tamal was so tasty and just overall the dishes are so fresh. We can't wait to come back again and sit out on the patio. Love the vibe, fun colors, and plants. Great place to come with family, friends, girlfriends, or even with little ones! Can't wait to try their brunch.

Yelp
I've dined at Conejo a few times now and it's been consistently great. One of the standout features of Conejo is the impressive happy hour menu. The variety of food and drink options available during this time make it a great spot for a quick post-work date or meet up with friends. The prices are reasonable, and the quality of the drinks and snacks during happy hour definitely exceeded my expectations. One of my favorite things on the regular menu is the salad with chickpeas-- though I recommend adding an additional protein for it to be filling. The ambiance also noteworthy, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. The staff is always friendly and attentive, adding to the overall positive experience. Definitely stop by and grab a marg (or paloma!) when you get the chance... and feel free to invite me :)

Yelp
Wow, what a great experience! Okay, it doesn't hurt that it was our first date in a while! We came during late happy hour. I ordered a frozen blood orange margarita, which I really enjoyed and it was strong enough for me to feel (I may be a lightweight). My husband ordered a draft (and another). The beer selection wasn't huge, but it's Mexican, so it was perfectly acceptable. We tried chips (small charge) with salsa trio (complimentary). The chips are clearly homemade. They are thick and a good vehicle for salsas. I really enjoyed one of the salsa (black) and the others were good. The tuna tostado were so pretty and tasted fresh. We ordered a chicken taco and barbacoa taco from the HH menu. I think that is a small discount, but biggest benefit was trying a variety of options. Barbacoa was the better of those. We also ordered the brisket street tacos; yum!! My favorite item of the meal was the sweet potato side item, OMG, so good!! Although we were super full, we still tried the tres leches and glad we did. The raspberry compote made it different. Atmosphere is good, very cute and hip and great service. Overall, pretty much a home run.

Yelp
So consistently good! Kale salad is my favorite and their sweet potatoes are AMAZING! Super friendly service. Love this place.

Yelp
Great Mexican without the oils and feeling of "heaviness" afterwards! My dad and I were waiting for my mom to finish off at Dry Bar and we were starting to get hungry, so we decided to stop by. We got mini plates and shared them all - super satisfying. It was a bit earlier in the day, so we unfortunately did not try their cocktails but next time! For a starter, we shared their tostadas de Camarón negro. It came with three different sauces - 1) dried tomato 2) green chili 3) some red basil habanero. The third was SO SPICY. The kick was amazing. Then, we got their plato redondo. That was the best! I especially loved the sweetness of the creme de leite and avocado. The shrimp were so small and cute! Our waitress was speedy and friendly. I loved the ambience there and the location was great; so much cool stores to walk by and check out:)

Yelp
Good Mexican food at a pretty reasonable price. Take advantage of their weekday happy hour with both food and drink discount. Food come out pretty fast. I ordered three tacos they are all very good. The Baja shrimp and fish are good portion. The tuna one was ok, also I asked for no cilantro they still serve with cilantro. The raw tuna tostada are much better than the tuna taco.

Yelp
On our recent trip to Richmond, we went out of our way to try Conejo, and were immediately blown away by the quality of everything we ordered. We ordered the: - Queso Fundido - the chorizo had some sort of sweet spice which made it cheesy, sweet, spicy, and all around amazing. This is probably my favorite thing we ordered. - Gobernador - grilled shrimp and veggies with cheese and flour tortilla. YUM. - Tacos - we ordered a couple with meat, and one broccoli - Horchata soft serve - Tres leches - this one was lemon flavored. It was possibly too strong on the lemon, but the texture was perfect (and I'm a snob about tres leches texture). - Margaritas - delicious, and strong Service was also great. We sat outside on the patio, and the ambiance both inside and out was a vibe.

Yelp
This place was fabulous!! Perfect for family or a date night - vibes inside were super cute and popping on the Saturday night we went. Despite being packed, our server was great and helpful, and the food came out quickly, and delicious ! We opted mostly for seafood, and the fish entree was increíble.

Yelp
We tried Conejo for the first time today. The ambiance is immediately inviting. The inside is bright, open, and clean. I like this instead of the trendy día de los muertos ambiance a lot of Mexican restaurants are trying to replicate. That is starting to feel played out, while this is refreshing. The service was good but a little slow. The prices seemed more reasonable than what we've been seeing lately and that too, was refreshing. Reasonable prices allowed us to try drinks and several appetizers, along with our entrées. For a drink, I ordered a michelada. I like Valentina hot sauce but in this case, it was really overpowering. I prefer a traditional michelada with a little Clamato. But if you like Valentina and don't mind the absence of Clamato, this drink may be for you. For appetizers, we ordered the guac, queso fundido con chorizo, and chicken enchiladas. All of the appetizers were fresh and good but none were exceptional. The chip situation is weird. Before you order anything, they bring you a plate with a small amount of their three salsas. But they don't bring chips, so it seems pointless. For appetizers that come with chips, like the guac and queso fundido, they only give you what amounts to about two tortillas cut in half or in quarters. My kids act like they're competing for food so my husband and I barely got one chip in for each appetizer. We ordered tacos, esquites, and a sweet potato side for our main course. The tortillas are homemade with blue masa so that was nice. My husband preferred the al pastor, my son liked the suadero, my daughter liked the birria, and I really enjoyed the fried haddock. We all really liked our tacos but none of us loved them. However, my husband and I did love the sweet potato side. It was original and flavorful. That side alone might be a reason to return. Next time, we'll each get our own!

Yelp
Upscale, Mexican food with neat ambiance. The tortilla chips were the best I've ever had but they don't give you a ton. Still worth ordering extra! Guacamole was perfect and highly recommend. I inhaled it and forgot to take a picture. I order three tacos, carnitas, chicken and shrimp. They're small but tasty. I also ordered esquistes(not pictured) which is corn in a cheese sauce with spices. It was delicious! I got a red sangria which was good but smaller than usual sangrias I've had out. Service was super friendly but a bit slow. I would return again for the chips and guacamole alone!

Yelp
Wow! Wow wow WOW! When I saw all the 5 star reviews on Yelp (and from Elites too), I knew I had to head over here ASAP. I can confidently say they have some of the tastiest tacos I've had in Richmond. I made a reservation for two on a Monday night (yes, you need a reservation for a Monday it's that good). I'd highly recommend it for a date. The interior design was very cute and trendy. I came here with a friend I hadn't seen in a while. It was a great place to catch up and share some tasty food. Here's what we tried: Las Tres Salsas: This comes with all meals. All three salsas have a nice kick. The salsa roja, the hottest of the three, had a nice rise to the heat. I found it to be really spicy. My friend who has a really high spice tolerance thinks it could've been spicier. I love how different each one was. Ceviche Clásico: This had a kick I didn't expect. I'm a sucker for ceviche and this one was pretty tasty! La Milpa Salad: A very generous serving of salad. My friend really enjoyed this and loved adding some of the verde tatemada salsa on top. Tacos de Cochinita Atun: YUM! I love the way the tuna is prepared. Simple, but wonderful because of its simplicity. Plus pickled red onion is always a good idea. Tacos de Carnitas: WOW! I took a bite of this and had the goofiest smile on my face for three minutes straight. I felt like I was in taco heaven. The thicker slices of the cheshire pork shoulder were juicy and the thinner slices added a nice crunch. Flan: A lot creamier than other flans I've had. It had a nice kick too. Tres Leches: Light, but creamy. Tasty with a fun addition of raspberry. The environment was just perfect for me. They have a nice outdoor patio. I loved our waitress. She was really attentive and funny. She checked in on us a lot and even helped us pick out the best desserts. I can't wait to come back for some more yummy tacos!

Yelp
Sad to say that this was the dinner my Mexican wife was looking most forward to on a recent trip to Richmond. We came 20 min early for our reservation and were seated promptly but at a high table by the bar. We ordered tacos, mole, "chiles rellenos" and a steak costra. The masa in both the tacos and the costra was amazing, some of the best tortillas I have had in a long time. Steak on the costra was cooked well. Birria taco was pretty good as well. The suadero and carnitas tacos were a bit salty. The mole was spicy which masked the chocolate and smokey notes. The masa in the tamale was very dense as well, not bad, but not something I have had before when it comes to mole. All 4 dishes came at the same time. All got cold (other than the chile rellenos which is a cold dish) but they were also served fairly cold. The mole was taken back when I complained but still was not super warm. Maybe I was missing something. We finished dinner 25 minutes after our initial reservation time.

Yelp
Vibe: very nice space, beautifully decorated and a great place for friends/family to meet and dine. Our waitress Bianca was super nice and attentive to our party of 6. Drinks: I had a very tasty frozen Paloma, not too sweet but a nice kick (4/5). Definitely refreshing. Food: this will probably be an unpopular opinion: I wasn't a fan of what I tried. Shrimp taco 3/5 it was very fresh but fell short on flavors I've had (prepared) better, missed the wow factor (it was a bit better after adding the all three salsas). The Queso Fundido with peppers (2.5/5) and the guacamole (3\5) missed the mark for me on flavor as well. I prefer both the dip and guacamole from Blue Habanero. The chips where ok also I like the concept of fresh made but they were fried a bit too long for my liking. And lastly of the complimentary salsas the verde was my favorite! In fairness I would like to return sit on the patio and try another dish.

Yelp
Wow this Libbie and Grove area has really expanded with what is around here. There is parallel street parking or a parking lot in the back. Conejo is across the street from Pearl's Bake Shoppe. Conejo had a super fun vibe. The bar was also very spacious. I bet it would be so fun to be here in the spring and summer and eat outside with some chips and salsa and a a margarita! The place is very bright and airy. The art work on the wall gave it a fun and modern vibe. I came here with some previous coworkers/friends for Happy Hour and dinner. I got a La Luz (jalapeño-pineapple margarita, good but I didn't taste the jalapeño at all, wouldn't of even guessed it was spicy tasted like a regular margarita) and Blood Orange Frozen Margarita ( this on the other hand was super tasty... through I wished they would have salted the rim of the glass). We also ordered Chips and Guacamole, and Chips and Salsa for the table to sure. I love the homemade think corn chips they serve, great crunch and reminded me of a healthier pita... wish it had a tad more salt. They provided us a trio of mini salsas too. There was a orange (the spiciest but in my opinion lacked flavor) green salsa and the matcha salsa (this was by far the tastiest and most flavorful, definitely my favorite. So good, I asked for more for the tacos I ordered) My two girlfriends both ordered the Tostadas de Pescado (they both said how delicious it was but both expected it to be larger). My guy friend ordered a noodle and rice bowl to take home to his wife since they just had a newborn a couple months ago, looked good and plentiful. I ordered two tacos a de cochinta de atun and quesabirria de pollo. They were both fairly small when compared to other Mexican restaurants. The tuna taco was amazing I actually wished I ordered a second one of that (such a fresh and large piece of tuna lightly seared, the combination with a little match salsa was so good). The quesabirria I've had better and was sadly disappointed by that, I should've tried the brisket or carnitas (there will be a next time though). I do wish it came with rice and/or beans that would've been great. My only recommendation is treat it like tapas style. Get a little more than you would normally at a Mexican restaurant. We did go during Happy Hour, so it wasn't super expensive, forgot to take a pic of the happy hour menu. Anyway, it would be a fun date night or get together with friends, the place was definitely packed on a Thursday night by the time we got to dinner time. Happy Hour is from 4:30-6.

Yelp
Food was delicious. I had the Carnita tacos and they were delicious! Small but great. All their tacos are small. The service was good and the restaurant was very clean and nicely decorated. They even have outside seating for the great weather we've been having. The only complaint I have is the parking. If you're lucky, you can find a spot on the street. Otherwise you have to use the parking deck which I don't like parking decks.

Yelp
Great, fairly new restaurant that I had to check out. Came for dinner with my best friend - she made reservation a week before just to make sure we get a table bc this place is busy even on Tuesday evening. Space is open, modern with cool vibe but loud and noisy so it was hard to hear and talk even though we were seated at a fairly small table for two. We had some issues with table space since they have shareable small plates so it was hard to fit everything at the same time. Our waiters was young but knowledgeable and personal and during dinner she checked on us fairly often making sure we are doing ok. For starters we ordered queso fundido with roasted peppers - it was not a runny dip that you would expect but rather a chunk of cheese melted over roasted peppers that at first was soft to dip chip in but as it cooled down it became solid and we had to use fork and knife to cut a piece and put on a tortilla chip. Not my fave! As far for tortilla chips they were tasty but quite thick and hard! We also had guacamole which was pretty good, smooth with some chunks and nicely seasoned. Now about cocktails WOW those were delicious definitely recommend trying something! We had Gloria and La Pluma both slightly sweet, citrusy just enough boozy that you feel alcohol but it's not overshadowing everything else! For our main meal we shared shrimp tostadas - crispy corn tortilla topped with shrimp, chipotle sauce, guacamole and cherry tomatoes onions cilantro and lime, it was very good and not overly spicy. We also shared brisket tacos - also good but nothing to rave about, my biggest issue tortillas were pretty thick and a bit under in my opinion. They also bring you trio of salsas for the table on the house - salsa matcha, verde and roja, all with a kick but roja being the hottest so try before you put it on your food to see what works for you best! We saved some space for dessert so we tried flan and Mexican chocolate soft serve with added candied walnuts. Flan was delish, fluffy and caramel Lu not too sweet and ice cream was pretty good and heavy on chocolate flavor, candied walnuts added nice sweetness to chocolate bitterness! Overall I would come back but mostly for drinks and light bite! Maybe I expected more after reading all raving reviews!

Yelp
Small portions, over priced, horrible service. Went early, Thursday 4:30-6:30, started off ok, but as soon as more tables arrived, service stopped. They couldn't handle it. Had to get up and go ask someone for the check.

Yelp
4.5 stars. As a native Angeleno that now lives in Richmond, VA I get a little confused about how things are on menus here. I guess I'm so accustomed to traditional Mexican and I am 100% to blame for not reading through the fine print on the menu but when I saw "Cochinita", my assumption was that I was getting suckling roasted pork tacos. When I ordered "Pastor", tacos, I ended up with chicken and not traditional pork. Totally my bad for not reading the fine print and just skimming through the dish titles but I have never in my life heard of a Cochinita Tuna Taco. Maybe change the menu name to Tuna Pibil? The word Cochinita literally translates into baby pig. So when you're ordering, read the description of the taco, under the name of the taco, word for word. And before you drink margaritas! Otherwise, if you are drinking and chatting with friends, you might just skim the titles and end up with a chicken pastor taco and a Tuna Cochinita Pibil taco. The service was incredible, we couldn't have asked for a nicer server who went above and beyond, even though I was dumb and assumed what would come in my tacos. Again, don't skim the title, read the fine print because Cochinita does not mean Suckling Pig on this menu, you will get a Tuna taco! Salsa trio- would love a little more sabor and a little less heat in each salsa. The heat level was consistent in all 3, there wasn't much noticeable difference in the burn. I would've liked just a little more sabor in all 3. The drinks were tasty and cold. Frozen Coconut Margarita is definitely what you need on a summer Friday night. All in all, amazing! Just so confused about the Cochinita Tuna and Chicken Pastor. There is ample parking in the back of the building. Y'all need to keep hand soap in the restrooms, please. I feel weird using the toilet and then eating without washing my hands with soap and hot water. We will be back for another try!

Yelp
On my fiancee's never ending quest to find good fish tacos in RVA, and my general conquest to try any good Mexican good in general, we ended up at Conejo tonight. Sooooo, wow, just wow, really. --Food: We ordered a sampling of many different items, including tacos, sopes, chips and salsa, rice, and dessert. I also really love that they label their menu for gluten free items for people allergies and conditions like myself. - Baja fish tacos: A fried fish taco with spicy aioli, cabbage, and pico in a homemade corn tortilla. My partner got it without the pico and absolutely loved them. She said they were one of the best fish tacos she's had and they did look incredibly good. - Carnitas (roasted pork) taco: Probably my favorite. The pork was just so flavorful and moist! I would definitely get a whole order of these. - Cochinita Atun (tuna) taco: Really, really good. The tuna was very flavorful and had a nice spice on it. If you want a great fish taco but can't have breaded fish or just prefer a lighter flavor, these are great. - Sope with rotisserie chicken: For those unfamiliar, these are small masa (corn) patties, fried I believe, in which other toppings like beans, cheese, meat, and lettuce are eaten. Basically little edible plates. I think the ratio of lettuce is a little too high, albeit the lettuce was fresh and tasty, but overall these were really good! - Salsa and chips: I'm not going to say these are something they're not. They're chips and salsa. If you've had chips and salsa before, you've had these. Don't get me wrong, they were good. - Arroz Verde (green rice): A nice rice side dish with a hint of pepper and cilantro. Not super interesting, but if you want a side of rice, it's good! - Soft serve ice cream dessert: I liked this a lot more than I was expecting to! I got the Horchata flavor, basically a cinnamon milk flavor, and she got the Mexican chocolate. Very smooth and very flavorful! We got a side of strawberries and walnuts, which honestly it didn't even need, but was even better with. --Cost: Each individual item or order of items is pretty inexpensive, about $5-$10 depending on what you get. We ended up getting a sampling of a bunch of things and our bill came to $50. So, not the cheapest, but everything was delicious and well worth. --Atmosphere: Honestly the place is pretty chic. I wouldn't say suit and tie, it's still relatively casual, but everything is very neat and orderly and laid out very professionally. It's a nice place. There's a nice indoor seating area, an outdoor patio with an awning, and some outside seats in the open air. --Service: Very good. Very attentive. Staff was informed on menu items and checked with kitchen on some specific allergy related questions I had. Great experience all around. -- Downsides?: Honestly, I don't like the napkins. "The napkins!?" you say? For some reason the napkins are incredibly large, thick napkins that feel almost like a towel. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with them necessarily, but I think I would have preferred a smaller more absorbent napkin. But we're getting pretty specific with this one, huh? --Overall: If it wasn't clear, we love Conejo. We're already planning and talking about what we're going to try next. Everything we ordered was at worst "good", and at best "some of the best tacos we've had in Richmond". If you like Mexican cuisine, definitely give it a try please!

Yelp
I had been wanting to check this spot out since before they opened, so it seemed like a perfect opportunity to visit when my birthday fell on a rainy Monday in May. It seemed the whole city had the same idea, so I'm glad we had reservations! Weirdly, multiple (adults) had brought balloons along to their reservations and there were three people in the row of booths next to me also celebrating their birthdays. The restaurant is loud. My date and I agreed that we'd be more likely to sit on the patio next time, though the interior decor is well-done and classy. Our server was nice as well. They'll ask if you want the food to come out as it's ready or together, so that's a nice touch too. We split the queso to start, and it was top tier. I would've been fine had that been my entire meal. I ordered the taquitos, which was probably not the best choice -- they just needed *something* extra. My date got one of the spicy ceviches and he liked it quite a bit. The complimentary salsas were a great touch too, though definitely more spicy than mild. Conejo was a nice place to ring in a new year, and they're close by, so I'm sure I'll return soon.

Yelp
Really great food, atmosphere, and service. This might be my new favorite places for Tex Mex / Mexican food. Dishes are slathered in queso - the drink menu is quite sophisticated, and food overall was excellent. I ordered Enchiladas Verdes which came in a mini iron skillet. The Chips and Guac were very good, as were the carnitas tacos. We also tried the tuna tostada which was super yummy. A spicy margarita washed it all down. Highly recommend.

Yelp
My fiancé and I were so impressed with this restaurant! We might go as far as to say it's the best Mexican in the Richmond area. Everything is very fresh and authentic. The queso fundido is soooo good and not too big of a portion. My favorite entree items were the chicken queso birria tacos and alambre costra. All of the salsas were so good too. We will definitely be back to keep trying more menu items!

Yelp
I am actually obsessed with this place. There are a lot of places that serve food of this style. Call it Tex Mex, perhaps there is a better name. However, this by far the freshest, most reasonably priced, most delicious around. Plus the atmosphere is delightful, parking is fairly easy, the staff is friendly, the cocktails are nice, and just YUM. You can sit at the bar after shopping at nearby boutiques or just come in and sit at a table and make it THE destination. I don't want to say negatives, but having tried competitors that are in this same vein, the bright and airy atmosphere alone wins. Then, there's the tasty trio of salsas (tiny but that smoky one - so unique!) with chips you receive which are also delicious. Each entrée I have ordered has always been uniquely flavored and everything is fresh! I also love it that the food is not just smothered in cheese and sauces. It tastes like the ingredients it is made from. Oh and corn tortillas. I'm a fan. So if you want random monster plates of sameness full of beans and rice that are a dime a dozen - this is not that place. If you want fresh, bright, flavorful and delicious - you may see me there! (Also my teen had a mocktail - one from the menu on one visit, and one created for her with passion fruit juice on another visit - absolutely on point!)

Yelp
Oh. My. GAWD. *Finally* we have a true Mexican culinary heritage spot that's like a trip to Oaxaca (the culinary capital of Mexico, with seven moles since why just pick one?). The level of delivery on brand here is epic, starting with the best margarita I've had since my last trip to Mexico, then continuing on through the endless parade of delights from guacamole, to seafood cocteles, to salads, to tacos, to desserts (oh, that flan) - this is a place worth multiple visits, since you're going to want to try everything. They make their own tortillas from masa they grind themselves, which is a dedication to flavor and tradition not seen in many Mexican restaurants even in Mexico. Visit for lunch or dinner, but make sure to bring an appetite - you'll want LOTS of this stuff. Bring friends so you can share around the table, getting every little yummy bit. Service is also top-notch, with zero hovering. Kind, friendly, hospitable - matching the incredible food.

Yelp
I went to Conejo which is spanish for rabbit, and they are serving up that good diverse rich Mexican cuisine! Their craft cocktails are amazing. Who knew savory cocktails could be so yummmm?! This is the 1st spot I've found in Richmond that does the queso fundido like I like it. Super stringy cheese and I had it with mushrooms and chile poblano which was delicious!! And the los costras costilla that is a flour tortilla thingy with caramelized cheese and beef short rib sprinkled on top...was a whole ass party in my mouth! My friend loved the tres leches and said it was one of the best she's had! The plates are small and that's a good thing because you can try the whole menu haha.  I'm about to be a regular y'all because everything was good! Zero complaints!! Go check it out y'all!

Yelp
Update: we've been here several times since they opened, and the food, drinks, and service are consistently good. Last night my husband and I went and were very excited to try the new seasonal items that were highlighted on the website. Unfortunately, none of them were on the slimmed down menu we were offered, and the waitress explained that the menu is in transition. So we had tacos, queso, a rice bowl, and sweet potatoes. All were delicious. I planned to give an updated review at 3 stars because of the limited menu, but really couldn't complain about the food. We loved our meal. The stars of the dinner: fabulous cucumber lime jalapeño margarita, carnitas rice bowl, and the sweet potatoes - perfect blend of spice and honey.
