Some of the very best salt and pepper squid in town. And I would say Houston restaurants offer a lot of competition for this paricular dish.
It has been a few years since I stepped foot inside Confucius and there have been many changes. The flooring has been updated, the floor to floor mirrors have been replaced, and customer service has gotten better. What hasn't changed? The delicious food.
My family and I ate dinner here on a Saturdag night and we were mighty pleased. Our table of seven ordered the following:
Fish and crab soup: classic soup with slightly thick consistency filled with fish stomach and pieces of cran meat. Yes, I said fish stomach. Not my favorite thing in the world but it isn't really that offensive. Think of a soft little sponge that soaks in lots of flavor.
Salt and pepper squid: amazing! Large cuts of squid is drenched in breading and fried to a beautiful golden color. Then, the fried squid is lightly tossed in a scallion, jalapeno, salt, and pepper mix. It's just fantastic.
Sauteed clams: juicy clams tossed in a thick sauce and sauteed with bell peppers, onions, and basil. Eat the clams and then cover your bowl of rice with the left over sauce! The basil is the ingredient that really elevates the dish.
Cold cut chicken (half order): cold cut chicken marinated in a sweet soy sauce topped with thinly sliced scallions and ginger. Ad the name suggests, this is a cold dish. And while not for everyone, I quite enjoy it. The chicken is moist and tender while the scallion and ginger mix on to offers a refreshing balance.
Great meal, great company, great night.
Will be back for more dishes very soon
