Where To Eat & Drink On Your NYC To Portland, Maine Road Trip - New York - The Infatuation

"Congdon’s is a southern Maine institution, which means it’s more than worth a lightning-fast detour off Route 1. You’ll likely see a line out the door when you pull into the parking lot, but thankfully, it moves pretty quick, so you can enjoy your doughnuts and coffee on the road or in their outdoor seating area. While their maple-raised donuts are unmatched, get at least a half dozen so you can try their airy raised, filled, or cake varieties with different fillings, frostings, and sprinkles." - anne cruz, carlo mantuano

Google
THE BEST DONUTS!!! Worth the hype. Truly loved with filling, especially the chocolate, maple and powder filled donuts. So so so good. Long line but moves quick! Friendly service. Reasonable prices. The dough is incredible too. Worth the hype. Even got dog donuts!! Went to the food trucks at Congdon’s after dark as well and had the best chicken wrap with live music. 10/10 recommend

Google
I always review things based on the price I pay! At $2.79 per donut and $34 for a bakers dozen (13), they needed to be close to perfect. Donuts (raised and filled) were standard, nothing to be too excited about, but the fritters were excellent (they were sold out of their signature donut, the blueberry fritter, when I ordered at 10:30 AM so I can’t speak to that). Apple was fantastic. There’s also a nice shaded seating area to enjoy. They had a sweet employee who came by to offer complimentary donut holes. Overall I’d recommend it but if you’re more cost conscious you might not think so.

Google
I still am thinking about these donuts a week later. Almost convinced my husband to stop off the highway on our ride back to NYC from Portland just to pick up these donuts. Best donut I’ve ever had. My husband arrived around 8AM on a Saturday morning and waited in line for about 30 minutes. Go early!! Favorite donut was the white cream chocolate frosted. Homemade and delicious, fresh — highly recommend.

Google
This doughnut spot doesn’t look like too much from the street, but delivers some of the best doughnuts 🍩 in New England. I always come here for a treat! Don’t let the lines keep you from eating here. They move fast! Enjoy and your welcome 🤗

Google
Very good pastries. I ordered a dozen donuts online and specificed in the special instructions box if they can include 5 jelly donuts since there wasn't an option to check for jelly......and lord and behold there were 5 jelly donuts included in my order. Not only was I happy about that, the customer service was very friendly too. The donuts in general were great, from the blueberry filled to the Bavarian creme although my favorite was easily the blueberry fritters. My cousin had gotten a lemon filled donut and said it was the best lemon donut he ever had.... although that's not saying much. What stood out to me the most was that even after sitting out at room temperature for a day, the donuts were still as soft as they were when we got them. They didn't seem to get hard like donuts from Dunkin if my memory serves me correctly. Downside is that the donuts are pricey but given that these donuts taste way better than anything you get at chains like Dunkin or Tim Hortons, I'd gladly pay the extra for sweets at this place.

Google
This place is known and been around for a reason. Huge venue and don’t let the line cause concern as it goes by rather quick. So many donut selections it is hard to choose from. Huge indoor and outdoor seating but we grabbed them to go. Grabbed 4 different kinds but really loved the strawberry and the apple fritter. A tough decision as all were really good. Can’t recommend enough. Must try

Google
AMAZING DONUTS! I have tried a few different donut shops in the area and these are by far the best. There are so many great flavors I can't even pick a favorite. They are so fluffy and flavorful. I also love that they offer next day pickup and you can skip the line! It's totally worth it!

Google
So good we couldn’t wait to take pics before the first bite! A family tradition, you have to stop in to start your day 🍩☕️! Fresh, delicious, great service, lots of room to park and sit, and will leave you wanting more. Best double chocolate crunch donut I’ve ever had ❤️

Yelp
Directions to make your day a WHOLE lot better: 1) Walk up to the counter (ohhh, the darling employees eager to help you) **Even particular people from away. Uhem...you know who you are. Please act like a grateful guest invited to share our beautiful state. 2) Say three words; BLUEBERRY FRITTERS PLEASE 3) Sit in a corner with the bag and a blanket-knowing it's okay not to share. A lot to love about this wicked satisfying shop in beautiful Wells!

Yelp
When I travel, I always try to find a few local favorite bakeries or donut shops. On this trip, one of my stops was Congdon's Donuts, which has received lots of great reviews and even offers shipping. They must be good, right? Unfortunately, that wasn't the case for me. I ordered a dozen donuts to sample a few different flavors, which cost me $36.16. After tasting pieces of two , I decided that was enough. While not everyone has the same taste in food, I encourage you to try them for yourself. The donuts were denser, which is okay. I usually enjoy a pink boa from Top Pot, which is also a dense donut. I do prefer a soft donut. One of the first things I did when I got home was get a good cup of coffee and a donut.

Yelp
Tried their St Patrick's Day burrito. Pastrami with sourkraut and cheese! Was great, huge. I couldn't eat it all at one sitting. Went back recently for a batch of donuts for the grand kids. They thought they died and went to heaven. Great spot, families love it. I can't say it's the healthiest but for donuts they're pretty good.

Yelp
Delicious donuts and breakfast burrito bowls! We love exploring Wells, Maine and this is definitely a must see tourist spot! Enjoyed the maple walnut and bacon fritter too! Service is great and the ambience inside is lovely. Perfect for a summer beach day!

Yelp
This place is truly amazing! We passed by it, and I had to try it. The blueberry fritter was outstanding! It's the perfect place to stop in for breakfast with your family. Everyone will be happy. The staff is really nice and gracious.

Yelp
I've had a lot of donuts in my life, and Congdon's is by far my favorite. We visit nearly every time we vacation to southern Maine (sometimes multiple times in the same trip). Their honey dip (basic round glazed - although there is nothing "basic" about it) is the best glazed had. I had the award-winning honey dip at Kane's in Boston this weekend, and I definitely like Congdon's better. The Boston Cream is outstanding, as are their honey buns. But runner up for me is the blueberry fritter (made with Maine blueberries, of course). Oh. My. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any donuts here. There can be a wait during the summer - but it's well worth it. The earlier you go, the less you'll wait. They have tons of parking outside. They don't have much of a dinning area - a few tables outside. My wife and I typically take them to Wells Beach and enjoy sea-side. They have some gluten free options, but not many (as of summer 2024). We've gotten some gluten free pastries at the nearby Hannaford. Bathrooms are super clean and customer service is outstanding. It's often very busy, so just be patient when needed. Although I can't recall issues with any of our orders. Just do it and go!

Yelp
We stayed at the Hotel next door so we can smell the donuts baking at night! Donuts, coffees,.breakfast. like breakfast bowls with indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
Best donuts around, the service is always amazing and inside is always clean. You can tell it's fresh donuts everyday you go. 5/5

Yelp
Donuts are really good but since when are they so damn expensive. $45. For dozen donuts and 2 coffees crazy. Service was good and so many people there for these donuts. They are good
google avatar

Yelp
The best fritters around New England area hands down!!! There's ample parking that does get filled fast and they also have a drive thru which is usually faster than getting into line to order. This spot is a staple in the area since they're been there since 1955. They also have Congdon's After Dark only during the summer time with food trucks. Anyhoo let's get back to the fritter donuts. I ordered the blueberry, apple and maple bacon. All were amazing but Apple is the best and second was Blueberry and third was Maple Bacon. They're also not overly sweet and to me they're just right. Very soft and great texture on the fritters. Anyhoo, if you're in the area do yourself a favor and get some fritters or try their food. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Great donut selection, and friendly staff. Donuts were really fresh and yummy. Great job!

Yelp
Very disappointed. We were looking forward to trying their doughnuts, Yelp said they were open. Got there & the place was closed. The sign out front said they are on vacation starting December 30th. Today is December 26th. WTF Nothing pissed me off more than wrong information.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely incredible donuts and the breakfast sandwiches are delicious as well. I've been here several times and it never disappoints.
google avatar

Yelp
We love Congdon's!! The donuts are the best around. The cinnamon roll was huge and sweet. Plenty of parking and an amazingly friendly staff.
google avatar

Allison C.

Yelp
We were told we had to try Congdon's Doughnuts while visiting the area, so we made sure to go early on a weekday when they had most of their selection still! Their chocolate frosting is very rich, and these donuts are definitely thicker and cakier than what we're used to back home in CT. They had such a great variety of flavors, but we couldn't resist all the chocolately ones. Not in our personal favorites for donuts we've ever had, but solid for the area!
google avatar

Jill R.

Yelp
Congdon's has been one of our families' favorite spots for many years. I'm not usually a huge doughnut fan, but these are special, and I/ we make sure to visit every time. We always stop in on our visit to Maine to get our fill. They also offer some food and dining inside, but we haven't tried the dining. The staff is friendly, but there are usually long lines for the donuts. The confetti donut is my favorite, but we've tried many, and all are good. There is plenty of parking- picnic tables outside to eat and enjoy, and a drive-through.

This is one of my favorite spots to stop at when I vacation in Maine .They are known for their donuts and huge cinnamon rolls. We got take out breakfast sandwiches and donuts one of my favorites is chocolate sugar . We had coconut and Boston cream . . I've been here several times times for breakfast I love their hash . Also have had lunch as well.. they also have an after dark food truck ... Always a pleasure visit Enjoy Chris M

Yelp
Congdon's is the place that you crave for reasons of nostalgia as much as the product! Most people have been coming here for so long that even if it isn't as good as it used to be, it's still great - even if only reminiscently! Today (Mother's Day) was an exceptionally busy day. We waited in a line out the door but it moved quickly. At 10:30 I thought we'd be late and out of luck but there were still fresh trays of donuts coming out as we waited and they looked great! The staff were happy and courteous especially for being as busy as they were! A great experience for a Sunday drive. But the donuts... We ordered just 6 to avoid overeating (there were 3 of us). Maybe I remember them different but they were much smaller than I recall! The maple cream filled were filled with plenty of vanilla cream topped with a small dollop of maple frosting. I mistakenly thought it would be filled with maple cream but there wasn't a lot of maple flavor at all. My second choice was a plain honey dipped. The glaze was scant and not on both sides, only the top. That just makes me sad!! The worse problem was it was a little "medium rare" inside. Not cooked long enough, wet and chewy. Other choices included butter crunch and chocolate coconut. I didn't try them but was told they were just ok. It's a great tradition so we'll definitely go back every time we are in the area (several times a year) but I just feel like the product quality has declined. Ps- neglected to mention I also got a muffin which I had for "brunch"today it was "raspberry". Note: singular - it wasn't "raspberries". A vanilla cake. See photo!

Yelp
This place is top notch! Top Notch I say!!! The inside looks all costal and quaint. They open early, around 6 am Thursday thru Sunday. They almost always have a long line after 7:30 am. They only have one counter and move as fast as they can but they're popular. I do miss the they had the restaurant side of it but it's been gone for a while. They do have an amazing order ahead option online, via their website. I almost always use this option, as it's easiest. However be aware, that just because you order ahead, doesn't mean to get to skip the line. YOU WILL STILL HAVE TO WAIT, even if you'd ordered ahead. I ordered a 200$ order, and then found out their dozens are bakers dozens, and they had me pick four more doughnuts for each dozen I got! So awesome, and honest! They rock! I get there early each time. Usually no later than 6:30 am, and there's usually no line. They have the best doughnuts, they really do. All kinds, big and small, and they also have pasties and other delights. They also have a few breakfast sandwich items as well. They have one of the best eggs benny sandwiches I think I've ever had. Then there's the glazed doughnut, bacon egg and cheese!!! Say what?!! So delicious. The ladies at the counter are kind and efficient, and always send you off with a smile and a come again! We will!! We always do! They are handicap accessible, they do have a drive thru as well but only first thing in the morning, once it reaches the road they shut it down. You will be waiting outside in the cold, during those seasons so draw accordingly !

Yelp
Amazing donuts, up there with the best I've had. The maple cream was really interesting - I had expected the kind of cream you see in a Boston cream, but it was more frosting-like and tasted like the Dunkaroos icing from my childhood. The strawberry frosted was also great, a little sweet for my taste but my son loved it. The iced coffee was good, not super remarkable but tasty. Bought some whoopie pies for the road, and I'm excited to try those. The service was nice and quick enough, and the inside has a little self-seating eating spot. It's a great donut shop, highly recommended!

Adam B.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a couple years. Had a great rasberry filled. They're a fair amount smaller than i remember them being. Woulda rather paid more for the same sized donut. Why the shrinkage?
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
Love their donuts! It's always super busy, expect to wait! Miss their breakfast! Last time we went the restaurant side was closed

Kaye J.

Yelp
Waited in long line and looked forward to a great experience. We were very disappointed. Waited 15 minutes for 4 coffee and 2 bagels. We were told they had gluten free options. They had prepackaged donuts with no date stamp on them. We purchased a chocolate, gluten free donut. It was terrible and smelled like plastic. It was totally inedible.
google avatar

Louis G.

Yelp
First visit and really impressed with quality and taste, yummy . Apple and Blueberries Fritters, Blueberry Jelly Donut and Apple Cider donut !
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
Their raised donuts are some of my favorites!! It's light and delicious. The apple fritter is also top notch. They have a drive through which makes it extra appealing!
google avatar

Susan V.

Yelp
Seriously amazing doughnuts!!! I had the homemade corned beef hash for breakfast and it was soooo good! Sweet and savory - all at one place!
google avatar

Nikita S.

Yelp
Always love getting donuts here on a trip to maine! I personally am a fan of cake donuts and congdons' are excellent. Even later in the afternoon the donuts were fresh and there was ample selection, also lots of seating (both inside and outside).
google avatar

Leonard F.

Yelp
Love cake donuts and these are probably the best we've ever tried. And the fritters! The long line moves fast and the service is very friendly. Unexpected bonus is the coffee is really good.
google avatar

Alyssa N.

Yelp
Great donuts and cold brew. The line was out the door, but the wait was worth the donuts and coffee!

Barbara M.

Yelp
Treat yourself to a decadent Boston cream donut. Worth every extra mile to walk off the calories. These donuts are not only delicious, they are light and flaky. You will convince yourself it is a health food!
google avatar

Bibi S.

Yelp
Admittedly it's been a while since we've been here, but I just wanted to say I AGREE with this being on Yelp's Best Donuts List of the country! We should venture east again sometime for these - but also stopping on the way in Chichester NH at a little deli for apple cider donuts with chocolate frosting!
google avatar

Hunter C.

Yelp
I was in Maine and I was finally able to try the famous Congdon's Doughnuts. Well I'm glad that I did because these doughnuts were delicious. Taking this into account, I ordered a blueberry jelly doughnut and a bavarian creme doughnut. To begin, the blueberry jelly doughnut was very good. To elaborate, it was fluffy, fresh, and the blueberry jelly was delicious. Likewise, the barvarian creme doughnut was phenomenal. It was sweet, savory, and the creme was magnificent. To expand, the creme had a rich flavor with a light, creamy taste. These were simply great doughnuts. In consummation, Congdon Doughnuts has top tier doughnuts and I highly recommend the barvarian creme doughnut.
google avatar

Kylie S.

Yelp
Stopped by on a road trip down the coast. Grabbed a few donuts. The blueberry fritter was a bit doughy and nothing really popped 2/5. The raised maple was solid with a good flavored frosting 5/5. The muffin was a disaster - dry and bland with barely enough blueberries to give the vague allusion that it was a blueberry muffin -1/5. The line was insane, I don't understand, they're nothing special/any grocery store or chain has about the same.

Yelp
We finally made it to Congdon's after stalking them on social media for years. (ok, following..same thing in this cyber world LOL) We participated in the program "Portland Food Fights" and this was the donut competition, this past spring. Both my husband and I were able to get a donut via the coupon and of course had to order donuts that others were recommending. Our first mistake, getting there late morning on a weekend. They were already sold out of 80% of their offerings by 10am. The owner felt bad, because I don't have the ability to hide my disappointment emotion from my face when it comes to food. She came outside of the building and offered a chocolate donut as a replacement for the maple one that I wanted. She apologized and offered her "all time favorite". It was good but mostly I appreciated her sincerity and care as there were dozens of customers behind us, that were most likely going to experience the same level of disappointment. All of the donut were good, especially for that style of raised donut. Definitely not from a big manufacturer but rather who they are, a small people run business who care about the product and customers. I recommend, following them on social media and stopping by to grab a 1 or 2...dozen donuts! Thank you Congdons!

Christine B.

Yelp
They were so nice and helped us pick out our donuts I definitely recommend the strawberry lemonade doughnut outstanding 10 out of 10. I know why they have the best reviews here. Was super clean beautiful with tons of paintings and beautiful pictures. Definitely recommend to come here.
google avatar

J. P.

Yelp
Excellent donuts and breakfast sandwiches! Sadly we didn't take any pictures as we just destroyed our food and headed home but every time we've gone it's been great!
google avatar

Chris F.

Yelp
Small business that still makes their donuts on premises- enough reason to go. Blueberry fritters are excellent, yes you will have a line but they are efficient and worth the wait.
google avatar

Justin T.

Yelp
Apple fritter was amazing. I wish I could have tried the blueberry and the maple bacon ones, but the waistline said NO. Service was good!
google avatar

Colin M.

Yelp
The best thing about going to Ogunquit during the off season is Congdon's. Very popular place with an amazing variety of fresh homemade doughnuts, fritters, muffins and scones...blueberries for each if you want. The help is local and vocal, Mainers through and through. Great place.
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
Fantastic doughnuts, breakfast sandwiches and coffee! I used to go as a kid when we'd vacation up there and I was recently in the area and they grew but didn't lose its charm and quality of food and service. This is a must stop for your sweet tooth or coffee if you're in the area (or not)
google avatar

Emkay K.

Yelp
Line was out the door wrapping around the parking lot so I thought these would be the most amazing donuts. They were average, the strawberry frosted was pretty good, but the filled donuts were only filled on 1 side and had about a teaspoon of filling, very disappointing when you are paying almost $3 for a small donut. The glazed donut breakfast sandwich was fantastic, that was worth the wait. It's definitely worth a try once but probably wouldn't wait again in line for the donuts.
google avatar

LeeLee S.

Yelp
Recently discovered Congdon's when staying in Wells for the weekend. They have the most delicious donuts. They are dangerous, we ate half a dozen in one day! I love that it's family owned and everyone who works there is so nice. The breakfast bowls are alright, my cheese wasn't melted which isn't the worst thing. I'd personally stick to donuts. We are getting married next month and plan on placing a custom order so we can have them as a dessert option!
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
Believe all the hype. Congdon's is absolutely wonderful, and their donuts are so soft and so tasty (and incredibly affordable). Their breakfast sandwiches are inventive and super tasty. The service is always A+, a smile and a nice convo while you're waiting, everyone here truly demonstrates excellent customer service. They have a drive-thru as well as a walk-up window. They also have a loyalty program where you accumulate awards and get coupons for free donuts or money off your order. They even send you coupons for your birthday AND your anniversary. Every now and then they do "Thankful Thursdays" where you can get a half dozen donuts FOR FREE with the purchase of a half dozen. So that's 13 donuts (they do baker's dozen) for the price of 6...which is pretty darn affordable if you ask me (I paid $13 the other day for a half dozen). Talk about customer service! While their donuts and service are amazing, there is one thing that keeps me coming back here above all others. Congdon's is THE PLACE to go in the southern Maine area for apple fritters. I have never had a better fritter. And I consider myself somewhat of a fritter connoisseur. They are the perfect texture, soft but chewy, with real chunks of apple, and the perfect amount of glazing on top, a light amount, but enough so that you get the sweetness to balance out the dough. They offer fritters in blueberry and maple bacon flavors as well. SO GOOD. Well worth checking out!
google avatar

Barbara M.

Yelp
We were excited to grab a couple of donuts before leaving town. The girl working the drive-thru couldn't have been nicer! The line moved fast. Our order was a jelly donut and an apple fritter. There was hardly any jelly in the quite small donut, and there were no apple pieces in the fritter! For the price of these donuts, which used to be quite large and our favorites, this was a disappointment. Wish I took pictures, but we kept eating to find the filling and the apples. ‍
google avatar

Betsy T.

Yelp
We have been here THREE times this week! Not only are the donuts incredible but the service and speed was out of this world! We went mid morning all three times and I was worried they'd be out of our desired flavors based on previous reviews. They were not! It seems like they've overcome some of their challenges and are running like a well oiled machine! The drive thru line was long both times we went through and it went so quick! I also loved that they had more than just donuts- the coffees and breakfast sandwiches were also amazing!

Kenneth M.

Yelp
We stopped by today for donuts and muffins. When we cut into our raspberry muffin there was one (1) raspberry in it!! (See the photo). One would think for the price they charge it would be chock full but this was not the case. It was a real let down.
google avatar

Jesse L. R.

Yelp
This clearly is the place to go for some awesome doughnuts in the area! The line can be quite long, but it does move fairly quickly. We got an assorted box of doughnuts, my favorites being the glazed and blueberry fritter. The raspberry filled Bismarck was also awesome! They were all fresh and delicious! I will most definitely return for some more delicious doughnuts the next time we are in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
Finally made it here after years of people telling me that I must go. A bit of a drive plus the risk of the donuts being sold out kept me away. So, when the opportunity came for being in Wells on an early Friday morning, we jumped. We arrived without a line and had a wonderful counter person explain all the flavors and options. There are many to choose from! My favorite was the maple/bacon fritter. Tasted like a pancake breakfast but crispy and delicious! We enjoyed the donuts as well, and I see why people rave. While not a heavy potato donut, they fall somewhere in between, and certainly not like a light, ethereal Krispy Kreme glazed donut. My preference leans toward the lighter style of donut. My wife also tried some of the mini whoopie pies, which she said were good. While we were ordering, the line quickly grew behind us. Timing is everything. There is indoor seating, outdoor tables and a huge parking lot. Take a trip and enjoy the donuts!
