"If you’re a Boston sports fan, then you already know about this old-school sports bar that serves affordable comfort food (“clam chowdah,” wings, potato skins, BLT chopped salad, salt and vinegar fries) and drinks (there’s a full bar) to Red Sox and Patriots fans. The bar got a facelift and everything, including the food, feels brighter and cleaner than before. There are plenty of TVs to watch the game, a pool table, and a small patio out back if you want to take advantage of Potrero’s sunny weather." - Dianne de Guzman, Eater Staff

"This bar’s reputation is outsized in San Francisco thanks to the known fact that Connecticut Yankee is the safe haven for Bostonians and New England Patriot fans. Clam chowder, or “chowdah” as it’s written on the menu, somehow goes for just $10 a bowl, and the beer flows like Tom Brady’s tears." - Dianne de Guzman, Paolo Bicchieri

"At The Connecticut Yankee, Potrero Hill’s longtime haven for Boston sports fans, everything is just right when the Patriots play. Fans pack the bar on any given Sunday, setting up a shrine with a Patriots helmet in the pool room while co-owner Tony Cooney rings a big bell and turns on a fog machine for touchdowns." - Caleb Pershan

Pliny in bottle and Russian River brands on tap! Pub grub, mix of folks depending on time of day you visit. Outside private patio NOT a parklet.

One of the few full dinner service bars in San Francisco left. American food like pasta. Burgers, salads, fried chicken, and a breakfast menu too with outdoor seating in a nice courtyard. Lots of live music shows too. Definitely try it and support this San Francisco insider favorite!

CHECK YOUR CREDIT CARD statement after dining/drinking here. They illegally added additional tip amount. I was there on Weds 12/4 ordered a few drinks. My first order was two shots. The second time I went to the bar, I ordered a Guinness. I waited over 10 mins at the bar counter and still didn’t get my drink. Then I tried to get bartender’s attention but she continued to ignore me so I asked the other bartender. The second bartender told me in a rude manner that the drink was not ordered on my tab. I told her I ordered it from the other bartender over 10 mins ago, to which she repeated that it’s not on my tab. Then she asked if I wanted her to place the order. That’s an obvious answer but I kindly said yes. It took another 5 mins to get my drink. Even with the terrible service I still left a tip. My bill was $35.03 and I tipped $3 considering the poor service. So total of $38.03 The next day, I checked my credit card online and saw that a total of $41.03 was charged to my card. This is not a big difference but the principle that an additional $3 was added illegally. I want to address my concerns as if this happened to me, how many other customers have been cheated as well? I sent them a message via Yelp but no reply. I wouldn’t come here again.

Came in to eat w my son while we waited for my daughter who was listening to a band down the street. We ordered soup, wings and a burger and fries. Service was friendly and quick. Our food was prepared and came out hot and beautiful. The Clam Chowder was delicious and in a big bowl. The Hot Wings could be a bit crunchier and they should overhaul the hot sauce, but not bad at all. The burger looked great and was fantastic! The place looks like an old saloon, sports bar atmosphere and can get very loud. I would definitely go back though!

Google
Not good. Food was way below average, limited choices and still lousy since prior ownership sold the bar years ago. Atmosphere remains good but food used to be great with many solid menu items. Those have been and are gone. Wouldn’t eat here again, lousy burger, same verdict last time, unfortunately, as this was my go-to for many years. Disappointed still. Too bad, sad for the neighborhood. Head back up to 18th street for great food.

First time coming to this establishment but have heard good things about it and also have had good from here before so I excited to visit in real time. The tequila selections are awesome and I was a little hungry so I grabbed. Chopped cheese. Food was good I would definitely eat here again. Not sure if they still have them but I was brought some ribs from here one time and they were awesomeness so if those are ever around give em a shot too.

This is a great local pub, exactly what you’d imagine a local pub to be. Do you like beer? Pub food? Laughs? Then this is your place. Look no further. If you like places like Local Tap and The Chieftain, then you’ll like this place. Do yourself a favor and check it out

Connecticut Yankee is a classic SF bar and one of my favorite places to have lunch, particularly on a nice day when you can eat outside in the back. Excellent burger.

Yelp
Ordered the chile Mac and Cheese with chicken which was very good! The buffalo wings were not as great with the blue cheese sauce having the consistency of water. Otherwise, the environment and service were wonderful. We sat outside on the patio and the bartender was very accommodating to put on MNF games on. Great and fun place to watch with friends in a chiller environment! Would overall come here again!

Yelp
They're under new ownership since the time they committed fraud by not paying into the Healthy SF program for employees' health benefits, so you can come here in good conscience now. I returned for the first time in at least fourteen years. I think I may have spent most of my previous time in the patio, because the layout of the inside of the bar seemed totally different to me even though it's clearly had the same layout for decades. I stopped by with my brother for a dinner break between playing old Atari video games. They don't have any kind of a veggie burger, although they do have a veggie meatloaf sandwich and some other sandwiches I can eat. I wasn't in the mood for non-Aanda Fuara neatloaf, so I settled on the mac & cheese and sharing my brother's fries. I was really impressed by both. For what looks a drink-first, eat-second bar, Connecticut Yankee serves up some really good bar food. Our server was very friendly and outgoing, and the drinks and food didn't take very long to come out. It was a pretty quiet night, although there were a bunch of people at the bar watching a Bruin game. I guess it's an all-New England-sports-plus San Francisco Giants bar. It definitely felt much more welcoming than the previous times I had come, when the bar was filled with drunk fans, but then Boston sports fans are particularly obnoxious, and I hate the Giants. I used to wait for the bus across the street from Connecticut Yankee all the time. It was nice to come inside again and see that it still feels inviting in an old-friend kind of way.

Yelp
Kitchen is closed at 11pm. Bartender was nice, great service. Will come back earlier to try the food and get the full experience.

Yelp
I haven't been yet, but sharing this photo of Wednesday night pub trivia. I'm always on the lookout for pub trivia places that aren't the usual spots.

Yelp
We went to a recent concert venue down the street and arrived a tad bit early before opening time. We had not had dinner so it was referred to us that they had food and beverages at short jaunt from the venue. We slid into a 4 table top and ordered a few Adult beverages. We also ordered Chicken Nachos and a few appetizers. They had a few beer selections as well as a full bar. The Server and Bartender were really friendly and it was a nice cozy neighborhood watering hole in SF. The food was good and I look forward to trying out more of their menu items in the near future. Great Beer selection if your into the local Craft beers scene.

Kristina T.

Yelp
We were heading to The Chase Center for a concert and decided to give this place a try. It was Easter Sunday so we weren't sure how busy this place would be. Well, it was BUSY!! We lucked out that a table opened up as this seemed to be a seat yourself type of place. Felt bad for the staff as there only seemed to be 1 actual server but luckily a few food and drink runners. Food and beers were good. For how busy it was everything arrived in a timely manner. They are smart, they take your card and essentially start a tab. Understandable as it is probably busy all the time. My only negative comment is it is EXTREMELY loud. Hard to have a good conversation as it was hard for my husband and I to hear each other. Other than that it was a cute but small place with good food and drinks!!

Yelp
We came back! We got engaged on April 7th!! After almost 10 years of a still very happy relationship.. We wanted to come back to one of our old favorites.. They did not disappoint. New owners and the menu has changed, but,,, the gravy is still some of the best ive had.. You have to come and try it.. We shared a Chicken Snitzel plate, with mashed potatoes and fresh veggies, and a Chicken sando, with really good fries. Everything was very tasty.. Victoria greeted us and waited on us too! She was very nice and efficient.. We had a really great return visit..I look forward to coming back again down the line..I'd eat here again just to have their Chicken Snitzel and gravy..delish..Also my margarita was really good.. I recommend it here as the food, service and the relaxed vibe was a good time.. seating was comfy enough and lots of parking.. Come give it a try!

Yelp
Not the same place it used to be... slimmed down menu and you have to ask what happened to the former "Larry Birdger," there IS NO Burger! No meat!! Plus it was expensive! The staff is accommodating but barely. Longstanding local pub, sold, gone wrong. Perhaps the Ambiance makes it work, but, if not a Patriots fan, head up to 18th street, go to Blooms for drinks and eat at the awesome restaurants... There's a bunch of really great restaurants, they aren't pretentious and don't take reservations so you can look around and decide where to get some fantastic food. Too bad for the CY, I've spent many hours there but won't be back.

Lawrence L.

Yelp
Pretty good bar food! The CY burger was delicious, juicy and seasoned well. Do yourself a favor and get the salt and vinegar fries! Divey bar, great people and dog friendly!!

Rachel M.

Yelp
took a dip in the pool! games out the wazoo! sports on every tv - I saw a man bet and LOSE and still he was in good spirits. a woman named christine had a large backpack and gave me a quarter. unfortunately, pool table was bills only. exchanged the quarter (all four of them) with begrudging but friendly (had kind eyes) bar tender. no tots! but perfect!

Xbig T.

Yelp
A very delicious and satisfying potato skin. The effort and dedication to the customer is what makes this family business an extended and welcome addition to San Francisco's hidden treasures. I did not catch the name of the welcoming gentleman, nor the very professional young lady whom flawlessly expedited my order paying excellent attention to just about every detail a customer deserves. Kudos and shout out to the chefs.

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
Good food, great bartenders - all staff period. Regulars are friendly. Can't say enough good things. Yeee!

Eric R.

Yelp
11/3/2023: Stood around for 20 minutes waiting for a drink for me and friends.. female bartender purposefully ignored me while taking orders from people who obviously got there after me. When I finally got to order after 20 mins of waiting, she told me "they don't have that drink right now" and moved onto the next person. The next person happened to be my girlfriend, and the while she was ordering a drink she said "oh you're with him?" And immediately left to someone else. I know people read these and think, oh the patron / reviewer must've been rude in some way. This is not the case at all. I walked straight up to the bar and was met with complete disrespect from doing nothing. Bartender clearly in a bad mood and let it affect their service to multiple people not just me.

Gene C.

Yelp
Staff is great and there's a good selection of beer on tap. Unfortunately, the menu is pretty sad for vegetarians. Neither of the two salads is vegetarian -- usually the one thing you could count on. The tomato sandwich is very basic. That leaves only the Mac & cheese. Why not offer an impossible burger? Or a big salad that is vegetarian? Some cauliflower "wings" would be fantastic.

Geo C.

Yelp
Favorite spot in the neighborhood! Good people, good food, good vibes all around. Come when Boston teams are playing and don't forget to ask for the pad thai.

Annabelle R.

Yelp
We were glad to run into this sports bar coming from Chase Center after an event (to avoid the high uber cost). It was about 10-15 minutes away, walking... one of the few places in the area available and open late (or at least till midnight on a Saturday). The area seemed safe, and even though we just had a couple beers, everything was great about this place.  Great character inside, quirky decor on the walls, mostly dedicated to baseball, a cool fridge kinda hidden. The place wasn't crowded, so it was easy to find seating at the bar. The place is a bit on the smaller side but enough seating throughout, plus several TV's on the walls. So many beers on the menu to choose from. I tried the Waldo's Special Ale 420 special, and it was STRONG.. yup, triple IPA. Service friendly, and pretty standard. Cool casual spot overall, no complaints.

Alex M.

Yelp
Finally, a good Burger in this town...its gotta have been at least a year before ive had one...great taste, cooked MR, simple goodness...w a bump and a beer and some of the guys moving a friend to the hood...perfect start to a Friday Potrero pub crawl... tanks, CY!

Chris D.

Yelp
Drove by this place a bunch of times and was curious what it was like. And then my friend who works in the area suggested we meet here for lunch. I love trying new places so of course I said yes! It definitely has dive bar vibes inside. But my friend suggests we sit on the back patio which was an awesome space! Pretty good menu options. He suggested the fried chicken sandwich so I ordered that. It was super yummy. He had a salad and enjoyed his meal as well. The service was friendly and prompt. Seems like it has a regular neighborhood crowd and I can see why! I'll definitely meet up here again in the future. Good stuff!

Min Joo K.

Yelp
Had the rudest experience of my life here. Normally we like Connecticut Yankee as a casual spot to grab drinks and food with friends, but the bartender working on 1/11/24 was so shockingly rude to everyone. I came in a group of 6 and he basically refused to tell us what flavors left they had for white claws as if we were annoying him by asking what the options were.THEN stomped up to us and yelled at us that we didn't show us the IDs of every single person at the table even though all the people who bought drinks showed all their IDs, and we were all so clearly older than 21. This bartender was incredibly mean to everyone who walked into the bar that night. Such a shame because we live close by and used to come here often, but will no longer be coming back or recommending this to our friends

William Y.

Yelp
When my former band mate was stopping by the Bay Area, trying to do a mini reunion for my former guitarist, drummer and I, we wanted to go somewhere that is distinct and where musicians feel at home. CY was it! Connecticut Yankee is definitely a great bar with amazing food. I had the CY Burger (medium rare) with a side of fries. The chips on top of the patty and cheese just gave a satisfying crunch at each bite, and their secret sauce was way different and tasteful than you would expect. All of us enjoyed the fries, just the right amount of salt and pepper, crunchy on the outside yet soft on the inside. Both bartenders working there were just "that bartender" that you can strike up a conversation and feel like you've been friends a long time even at your first visit. I can say this is one of the top bars I love.

Misha T.

Yelp
It's a bar with some decent bar food. I had the CY burger recently and it wasn't anything too crazy but was a solid meal prior to heading to Chase Center for a game. If you live in this part of Potrero this is probably a pretty solid bar but I don't think I'd travel for it unless I was heading to a basketball game or a show at the bottom of the hill or something. They also don't like it if you ask for specific flavors of white claw/high noon which is kind of funny since that doesn't strike me as a weird request. Like you can just organize them by flavor in the fridge right?

Janine S.

Yelp
Great bar to grab a drink and food. Really enjoyed their chicken sandwich. Excellent service!

Tom C.

Yelp
Caught a burger and beers here before a show at TBOHT. Burger was good, service was good. Plenty of TV's to watch the end of the Giants game. Lot's of history inside this bar.

John S.

Yelp
I used to love The Yankee. Especially when Fritz owned the joint (who the "Pour Boys" bought it from several years ago). Yeah, Fritz was a cheap curmudgeon. I'd been there a several times with some friends after it was sold and it was okay. It was still kind of a local's place. But now it's kind of a hipster bar with people who are pretty phony and hipsters are on their way out. And, it's way, way, way overpriced for what they offer. Meh...I'll go to Blooms up the hill instead.

Karen T.

Yelp
My first time here and not my last. Everything was good, the chicken is the only thing I expected to be a bit thinner and more flavorful. But I would come back for the BEST salt and vinegar fries!! Damn those were good washed down with my honey lager

Michelle C.

Yelp
Visiting from D.C. walked over to this place after the warriors game and was pleasantly surprised at how good everything we ordered was. Feel like this is an underrated place. Food was really good.

Carla F.

Yelp
One of my favorites! The staff is great, outdoor seating in the back is perfect since they have several tv's. Always a good time, good drinks, good friends. Haven't had the food here yet, wait do they have food?

Jenn F.

Yelp
Great bar with great food! The ambience of this bar is so chill and clean. They have a great outdoor area with umbrellas and tables. Great for large groups or just by yourself. Can't wait to come back.

D.Bruce S.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, a great porter snd Poblano Mac & Cheese. Friendly and accommodating. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Bartender soaent make good drinks. Wont correct it. Hard time. Makes u beg . Wont serve bread and butter even though they have garlic bread.

Gio G.

Yelp
TERRIBLE SERVICE!!! I was disappointed in the service last night when i went to meet up with a few friends at this bar. The female bartender was unfriendly when i approached the bar and had a rude response when I tried to show ID. The short bald bartender was complicated when it came time to check out and after paying for our bill and leaving a tip, he shouts at my friend and I how unhappy he was with the tip and to just take it back. my friends and I work in the service industry and agreed that if the tip is big or small you always say thank you and move forward but what this guy demonstrated was totally uncalled for.

Allan A.

Yelp
So I used to play SF co-ed softball league and we used to frequent Parkside and Connecticut Yankee after our games at Jackson Park. Had to get some service done on my moto down the street so I thought I'd drop by and definitely happy I did. Still great selection of brews and great, friendly staff. Had a bit of barfood and totally happy with my meatloaf patty melt. Cheesy, mushroomy and the meatloaf was a bit peppery but spot on. Nice crispy fries hit the spot. Won't wait so long to visit again

Erika V.

Yelp
Service is horrible! We are regulars and the server is always rude! Will not be going there anymore.

Giselle O.

Yelp
Came here after seeing a review on Instagram while we were looking for something to eat for lunch. The soda's were super flat but that's usual for restaurants these days. We ordered the potato skins, the potato itself wasn't dry at all which most are so that was good! But the chicken on top weren't cut small enough and dry. We also ordered the elote something and it was basically just corn so that was a waste. What we really came for was the nachos with carnitas and they were sooo disappointing. They weren't even hot, the cheese was melted but hard from being cold and the carnitas were not juicy at all. The service was ok, seemed nice but honestly messed up the things we asked for like bringing a coke instead of root beer, or forgetting the extra sauce. It seems like it was a decent bar at least, people were playing pool and it looked like mainly locals. But overall I'd say it was disappointing and a waste of a meal when there's many other places to eat.

J S.

Yelp
Hands down THE BEST FRIES I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! That's a hard statement to make because the best fries tend to be comparable. I had fries at Great White (Venice, CA) the next day, and they were perfect. Sounds crazy, but perfection doesn't even begin to compare with CY's salt & vinegar fries.

Tannar V.

Yelp
Connecticut Yankee has one of my favorite back patios in all of San Francisco! Their food is consistently delicious and the service is bomb!!!! I highly recommended the BLT salad and the salt & vinegar fries! Also, Courtney is the best ever!! I've known her for years. She's highly professional and extremely personable. 5 Stars for the whole experience!!!! Thank you!

Bryan K.

Yelp
We found this place on our way to a show in the Dogpatch. I instantly fell in love as soon as we walked in. I'm from the east coast, and it made me feel like I was back at home. Whenever we are in the area, we try to stop by for a drink and some fries!

Chris L.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar with outdoor space. From the looks on the outside you'd never guess what an extensive craft beer selection they have on tap. I was pleasantly surprised with the sour options - went with a Fieldwork beer - one of my favorite Bay Area breweries! Open on Monday nights too. Nice space in the back with open seating! Easy parking makes this a go-to spot in this neighborhood.

Jonathan M.

Yelp
Great old school food & service that's yummy & dog friendly. I'm a SF native that lives on the Peninsula. Always a special treat to stop here for a true SF experience. Fun bar adds to the cool vibe with fun & friendly bartenders!

Yasmin M.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar in Potrero. Love the New England vibes and the patio. Always playing sports! Food is also really good!!!

Meg R.

Yelp
I absolutely love this neighborhood bar. It is the perfect east coast haven found in SF. Good food, fun "city wides" (shot and a beer drink specials), and great vibes. Love the bartenders and everyone who works here. Everyone is very welcoming and the backyard is so cozy! Definitely stop in if you're looking for a drink in Portrero!

Lydia Z.

Yelp
A bit pricey for what you get (smallish serving sizes), but the food is pretty good. I mainly love the atmosphere and the patio server (who is always on top of his game and super attentive). You get to seat yourself inside or outside. The patio has 1 TV screen and 3 heaters but it doesn't do much to help warm up the place on a cold day. However, it is less noisy outside and rather intimate while the inside is your typical bar scene with several tables/booths. I don't really drink but I definitely love coming here for a quick bite. Foods I recommend: fried Chicken burger spinach artichoke dip any of their fries--so soft and crispy at the same time; my favorite Foods that were not that great: beet wrap Foods that were alright: corned beef sandwich (lots onion and jalepeno)

Meg M.

Yelp
This spot is everything you could want! The chowder is hands down unbeatable... Levi provided excellent service and got a few laughs out of me as well. This spot is so comfortable and cozy but for sure also looks like a great spot to watch a game and play some pool. I'll be back to get my chowder fix real soon! Thanks y'all!

Ryan B.

Yelp
To give you some clarity, I live a block away. There's really not much around me. So, CY is kind of a default place by default. It's a dive bar that serves food. I've had several meals off the menu. Meh, at best. I got a burger to go with bacon tonight. Can you please tell the cooks to skip on the salt please? It was disgusting and I couldn't eat it. The chicken strips are fried to the core, which means the chicken sandwich tastes like burnt cardboard. So, if that's how you like them, you'll love it here! Just so you know, a shot is $10. However, they have a beer and shot for $11??? BTW, there's a liquor store 2 blocks up, if you want to get a $4 shooter to go. And also, the atmosphere feels sort of neanderthal. Just an observation. It sucks that this is one of two bars around. :(

Jonathan B.

Yelp
This is my girlfriend's favorite bar and it's becoming one of mine, too. The staff is great, they have large TVs for viewing games, and the food is mouth-watering (check out the Cy Burger and fries). To top it off, they have a pretty high quality pool table in the back. Definitely worth making the trip and a great spot to check out now this summer!

Mansi S.

Yelp
This bar is a bit divey, but it has pretty good vibes. Don't come here to watch sports (unless they're Boston sports). The food and drink is really reasonably priced (~$10 for apps and a lot of main dishes), and it tastes pretty good for bar food. However, the music in here is pretty loud. Despite that, they will not turn the volume up for games (even in a separate room) unless they're Boston games. A group asked the bar manager if it was possible for them to turn the volume up during the Warriors game, and he was really rude to them when he told them no. Overall, I'd maybe come back on a non-game day, but definitely wouldn't come back to watch a game.

Tiffany D.

Yelp
Came here for a drink. Low key and down to earth. Convenient from Bottom of the hill and for sports' games going on. Bottoms it and/or chill.

Amber R.

Yelp
I camped out at the bar while my son and his friends attended a concert around the corner. So when I say the staff is some of the most welcoming I've come across probably ever, you know I've really put it to the test!! AM shift, PM shift. Doesn't matter, bring yourselves here. Have a drink, get some amazing grub (the burger was cooked to order (med-rare) which I swear you never find!!) and enjoy some Sunday Football. Annnd if you're a Boston fan, like myself, then this random gem is practically a gold mine. Red Sox, Bruin and Patriots Memorabilia line the walls. It's a Great spot to watch the game!
