The 17 Best Restaurants in Wichita, Kansas

"First opened in 1958, Connie’s Mexico Cafe is a Wichita culinary institution. It’s the oldest family-run Mexican restaurant in town and is popular for its fried tacos made with ground beef filling that’s mixed with peas and potatoes. Other favorites include the guacamole burrito, steak con chile, and fajitas. And the chips and salsa are hard to beat. Look for the photo of Harrison Ford — a frequent annual visitor to Wichita for flight training — posing with Connie’s owner posted near the cash register." - Denise Neil

Prices on everything have increased dramatically! Salsa was good. The food was mid (nothing to brag about).y fr8ed flour tortilla was practically burnt, and they used a potato as a filler to make the taco look as full of meat as it does in the picture. Just not as impressed as my first visit a few years ago. Is it because of the operations change??? 🤷‍♂️

Google
My favorite pork deluxe burrito and fried ice cream in town. !! Huge and juicy and incredibly wonderful burritos as always! The fried ice cream is just the frosting on the cake! I’ve been going here for years and it’s just great food even the hot salsa is just perfect! I’m bummed the Pepsi products are no longer offered for drinks but Dr Pepper worked out fine. The atmosphere was not 5 star just because it was so loud and the flies were driving me crazy but trust me it’s all worth it when they bring out the food!! Still a favorite eating spot for me!!

We went for lunch on a Wednesday. The service was a little slow, but the food was delicious! The burritos were large, and the hot salsa and queso were amazing! Good prices.

I literally love this place so much. Whenever I can't decide what to eat, I go to Connie's. My best friend took me here for the first time a couple years ago and it quickly became a staple for us. I've never been let down by the fantastic food and drinks and fast, friendly service. 1000000/10. I'll certainly continue to be back!

Google
This place is way over hyped. I expected it to be great due to raving reviews; however, the food was just okay. The prices are absurd and every ingredient you expect to come with your food costs extra. Items come with more filler ingredients than actual meat. Go a couple blocks down Broadway for the actual best Mexican food you'll ever get at a restaurant, at El Rancho.

A friend and I went to Connie's! Following the dedication of the 18th Street Bridge. In the memorial of Buster Sanchez. The place was not like it used to be. The inside has been updated with those ideas of the third generation. Which is common as a restaurant is passed on to the next generation. The booths are now more private. Which is a nice idea. For those who wish for that intimate privacy. Or to have a serious meeting with associates. They also have that patio atmosphere that is outside for those wanting something different. The dress is more relaxed as well. The host and cashier wore shorts. Which I have never seen at Connie's in all the years that I ate there. So, it was kind of a shock for me. I know that would not be allowed with the original generation. The chips were great. The sauces were fantastic. The hot 🔥 sauce is just that. So please remember it. My friend ordered a corn bean tostada and a deep-fried flour taco. I ordered a flour monterrey with pork. He really liked the tasted. I liked the size of my monterey as it did fill the whole plate. So it was like a 9-inch deep-fried flour tortilla. The arrangement of the items was different from the traditional style. The pork meat was on top of everything. Instead of being under the lettuce. Plus, the cheese was on top of the pork meat. It is a lot different than what I am used to. The quality was great with that first bite. And worth the price for it. But it was missing sour cream and a jalapen pepper on top.

Google
This is a fantastic place for homemade Mexican food. This was the first time I had been there. I heard about it through local news cast in Wichita. I had the King Size Burrito, and it definitely was king-size and delicious. I definitely took home over half of what i couldn't eat. I look forward to going back and trying something else off of the menu. The service was great. Good job, Connie's!! I will be seeing you the next time I'm in Wichita.

The lime margaritas are phenomenal. The enchiladas were perfectly done and flavorful. The staff were engaging and friendly.

Yelp
I would have to say Connie's has the best COVID-19 precautions. They have dividers blocking each table/booth. I was thoroughly impressed. It's been over 5 years since I've been there, but the food was still as delicious as I remember! Their hot salsa actually had a kick to it and I pretty much doused my food in it. I ordered the deluxe Chile Verde burrito with guacamole and it was huge that it was three meals for me. The pork was tender and juicy. The guacamole was flavorful that I'll order it as an appetizer next time. One negative would be the beef fried taco was very bland, but again doused in hot salsa, was its saving grace. Connie's will be part of my Mexican food rotation!

Yelp
Ordered to go for the first time. I bought a fried taco shredded chicken platter. Also bought a side of guacamole for $8.95. When I got to the car, I realized I had no chips to go with the guac. I went back in the store only to find out that chips are extra. And the guac was served in a tiny container. So disappointed. Will never go back especially when every Mexican restaurant gives you chips. Most of the time they just give it to you without you ordering it. And the fact they don't even tell you when you order guac is pretty ridiculous.

Yelp
WONDERFUL! Don't know how I missed this place in all the years I've been to Wichita! Connie's has been open since 1963 and appears to be still going strong. I had simple but great tacos while my Mother and Fiance shared a combo with a chili relleno. Everything tasted superb! Will be back for sure!!

Yelp
As an out of towner and first time visitor to Wichita, a work meeting brought me to Connie's Mexican Cafe. Whenever you visit a new place it can be hard to get an authentic sense of community, so I'm thankful that I was introduced to Connie's. The place has tradition, deep family roots over 63 years that continue to this day, and good food and service. When here, you feel like you are in an authentic local place, not a soulless chain restaurant out by the mall. I had a very good cheese enchilada plate with refried beans and rice. The mild salsa with chips was good and the spicy salsa was great. Service was friendly and efficient, even during the weekday lunch rush. I met two of the restaurant family members while there, including Carmen, Connie's daughter. She was warm and friendly and also has a wall in the restaurant dedicated to all of the marathons that she, now in her 70s has run!

Yelp
The best place for chile verde pork burritos!!! I live it with the guacamole! The burritos are huge! I had to share mine with my mom. The picture is after I already cut it in half. Super delicious! Great place for a great time with family and friends!

Yelp
This was our first visit and while my husband was as okay with it I personally don't feel it's worth going back. It seemed very small with all booths when we first went in, they did tell us later there are tables in the back but either seat yourself that's not easy to see. Anything beyond your first chips and salsa is extra but our server did bring us extra at no charge so that was nice. The mild was pizza sauce tasting and the hot was better flavor wise but not really hot. The food itself seemed pretty bland, my husband added salt and said it improved his dish. Mine had a cheese sauce which had a bland yet had an off flavor so I scrapped it off. The beans and rice also were lacking on flavor/spices. For the price, $40 for 2 of us, we'd have leftovers at most Mexican restaurants we frequent, but not here. Overall it was "okay" in my opinion, service was good and it was clean but the food left me lacking the feeling that I had a good meal.

Yelp
I still feel after 60 years in Wichita that Connie's is the absolute best Mexican food in town, and maybe even the state of Kansas. Authentic as it gets.. flavors are great, service is great. The guacamole is real and fantastic - it's actually made here, which is rare these days. I should stop trying other Mexican places and just come here everytime.

Yelp
17 members of our family came in the Saturday after Thanksgiving for lunch. I had called ahead due to snow and holiday time. When we arrived, they had a large table ready and we immediately had chips/salsa (yummy!) and waters. Our orders were taken very fast, all of our food came out hot and not one mess up on the entire order. We were very impressed with the polite service throughout our entire meal! We live out of town but we will come here every time we are back. The fried flour taco platter was great but the pork and bean burrito with chili and extra cheese on top is something I've been craving since I left the restaurant! Thanks for being PERFECT!!

T K.

Yelp
We really wanted to enjoy this place, it had all the right signals, the menu sounded wonderful, they seemed to use their signature "spicy chili verde with pork chunks" as the base to a lot of their dishes, and I really have been looking for some good hot green chili in wichita. THIS IS NOT THE PLACE....the chili wasn't spicy, the rice was made from broken rice and it was dry and overcooked. BUT IT WAS ALL RUINED BY THE USE OF A MICROWAVE!!! For only having two tables late afternoon, service was very slow, so I started paying attention to the kitchen and you could hear the microwave doors open and closing, ands he brought each dish separately as she ran them thru the microwave!!! If this food had any decent flavor to start with it was sucked out by the use of a microwave!! This place might have been great at some point but now ruined by lazy family members just looking for profits..SHAME ON YOU!

Adam S.

Yelp
Good chips ,salsa and white queso but their chicken enchiladas and rice and beans were not good at all. For the price not worth eating at Connie's.

Dennis O.

Yelp
I don't really have any complaints about the food or the service...but there are a few things about this place that I haven't seen anybody mention that people should know before they go. They do not have unlimited chips and salsa! 1 free basket and $1.99/basket after that. A huge draw of a Mexican restaurant is the chips and salsa!!! You get 1 normal sized basket that wasn't even full and that it! And splitting it between 4 people isn't ideal! Right away we were questioning the decision to go there. Kids meals are $10!!! I have a 2 year old...paying $10 for a cheese quesadilla is ridiculous...especially when you factor in the limited amount of chips you get! We ended up finding a chicken nugget meal with fries for $7.50...which is still high for a kids meal! When it was brought out it had just come out of the fryer and was crazy hot...also not ideal for a 2 year old. So instead of eating my meal, I had to cool his food off so it was safe to eat. The booths might be some of the smallest I have had to sit in as well. It was uncomfortable trying to east and share that limited space! I have heard that this is a longtime family owned restaurant. I felt that there had to be a reason but from my visit, i struggle to find the reason. But again, based on just the food...it was ok. Nothing special and nothing that would make me drive the distance to get it again!

Yelp
Food was excellent, service was prompt and friendly. Best tacos I've had in Wichita. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Met some family for lunch. The front seating area was full and the back seating area had couple of tables occupied as well. Our server was on point and checked back with us regularly. The back room was a bit louder than I'd prefer, but not unbearable or disruptive of conversation. I ordered a burrito and it was huge! Big chunks of flavorful steak with beans. It was so good!

Yelp
The food here is great. Their beans as a side was really good and I'm not normally a bean fan. My dad used to eat here when he was young. . He's 90 now. This place has been a Wichita gem that's withstood the test of time. Give them a try!

Yelp
I used to go to what was known as El Mexico cafe back in the 1970's. I left Kansas for California but recently I was back in Wichita and one of my first requests was to revisit. Since then the location changed and they had an adjustment of the name. Odd how you build things up from when you were a child only to realize they weren't as you remembered as an adult. Well that is not the case. As a kid I was all about the pizza and spaghetti but my parents loved Mex food so we were at El Mexico at least once a week if not more. Now as an adult, I would eat Mex food seven days a week if I could. All that being said Connie's lived up to my memories and then some. I ordered the Original king size burrito and smothered out with chili beans and queso! Mic drop moment!! I scarfed that down like I hadn't eaten in a week. Connie actually came out to great me. The servers, all pretty young were very on top of things and friendly. Not what you typically see in California. Truth be told I went to Connie's twice in the five days I was in Wichita. If I ever make it back to my birth town I will be visiting Connie's for sure!

Yelp
Great lunch location in the north end of Wichita. I have been eating here for 30 years.

Georgia C.

Yelp
We arrived about 6 on a Friday. There was no waiting and the hostess was busy cashing people out. I'm sure she would have been great at greeting & seating us. Loved the chips & salsa. The giant Rita's had no personality. They lacked flavor (even though I got the jalapeño one) and alcohol. Dinner was great! Our server was friendly and efficient, but never gave us his name. Our table had the giant burritos two different ways, the tacos, and a combo #1. We wasted no time jumping in and devouring it all. The atmosphere in the back room isn't much and it's loud even though there were only three tables sat.

Yelp
Great authentic Mexican Food Ambiance3 Color Plates for Your Home and an serviceable restaurant with great quality food with great customer service and excellent food quality Excellent quality and great customer service

Joe H.

Yelp
Consistent GREAT food, ALWAYS. Service can be a bit slow, dependent upon the day and time, but that won't deter us from returning.

Yelp
This is one of the Best Mexican restaurant ever. It's not fancy but the food and value is off the charts. The hot sauce was wonderful and the tacos were unique and very favorable. I you will need to try the chili cheese enchiladas. I would recommend this place to anyone who truly loves Mexican food.

Dana B.

Yelp
I've been going here my whole life and love the food! Tacos are great - love the shells and the additions in the taco (potatoes and peas?). Love the avocado tostada too!
google avatar

Mark W.

Yelp
Great Mexican food place!!! Loved the fried flour beef tacos and the queso. I'm also a serious salsaa critic and let me tell you something.....I'll put their salsa up against ANYONE'S!! Prices are very reasonable and service was top notch....when in Wichita, it's a ""must go"!

Julie V.

Yelp
My family has been going to Connie's for at least 40 years. Lots of new Mexican restaurants have opened in Wichita but still none compare. Connie's is family love in the form of awesome food. Since we've moved to Oregon we've been on a search for a place that compares but so far no luck! I've even dreamed about Connie's! We watched all the girls grow up and miss Carmen stopping by our table to say hello. I've tried to recreate Connie's salsa and will continue the endeavor. If we go to a place where the salsa isn't ok we don't go back! My son loved the tacos, my husband always ordered the single combination and I loved the mini-monterrey with guac. And oh, the chips and salsa! The atmosphere is pure Connie's; some might say a dive but aren't those the very best kind? Mercedes mixed with old pick-ups and suits with boots and jeans. No place like it....
google avatar

Debbie S.

Yelp
Can't remember if I've ever left a review but I probably eat here twice a month. My friend loves the pork and whole bean burrito and I love the Monterrey with ground beef and avocado slices. The salsa is also very tasty and we often order some to take home!

Yelp
Connies is the oldest Mexican Restaurant in Wichita, with slightly better than hole-in-the-wall ambiance, and the place where Harrison Ford ate when he visited Wichita to have his private plane serviced in Jan 2007. Homemade chips with mild salsa (Mexican oregano variety flavor - not my favorite) and hot salsas are served in refill containers with one bowl each. The hot salsa is fantastic, literally some of the best salsa I've ever had. I know, in Wichita? I frequently have to ask for a second bottle of hot salsa and another basket of chips. As good as the salsa is I'm surprised that the queso is only a little better than Rico's variety - what's up with that? The cheese enchiladas are served in corn tortillas which is unusual in Wichita (most other restaurants serve them in flour tortillas which is just wrong) with meat chili sauce and covered with cheddar cheese - oh yes, these are quite good. Hard shell Tacos are served in typical Wichita-style fried flour tortillas (also just wrong - the rest of the world serves hard shell tacos in corn tortilla shells). The rice is standard but good and the beans are like refried beans that have not been smashed, or maybe like drained frijoles. I also enjoy their chili verde (they call it the 3-color plate because the plate is divided into thirds - chili verde on one third of the plate, rice on another third, and beans on the final third) served with tortillas. I think all their food is pretty good, although I would probably think anything was great if eaten with their hot salsa and chips.

Yelp
I moved here from California, the land of many good Mexican restaurants and I can tell you...Connie's fits the bill. My husband and I ordered a bean and cheese burrito with the works, an enchilada plate, the king-size burrito and the all-meat burrito. Everything was DELICIOUS! You can tell that the beans and rice are freshly cooked, and the red chili sauce that you can choose to cover the enchiladas are wonderful! A very yummy dining experience, and I'm sure we will be back. Thank you, Connies!!

Yelp
This restaurant has a rich history in Wichita so I am giving extra points for the service and rapport among the Wichita community. This is my girlfriends' favorite Mexican restaurant so we go every so often. Every time we visit, we are never dissapointed. I usually order a burrito or tacos. This is your run of the mill tex-mex and if you get there before the rush, the food will be out there almost as soon as you can finish your chips and salsa. They also served beer, and have beer specials, however only offer one size (12 oz). I usually get a bigger beer so I don't have to order another one. They do offer bottled and draft beer. They also have margaritas, which I would like to try sometime. Their salsas are very bland and need a little bit of salt. Their food sizes have great portions! Will return!
google avatar

Dan W.

Yelp
Since moving away from Wichita I have searched and searched to no avail for a Mexican restaurant that serves a burrito similar to Connie's. I've come to the conclusion that their king size burrito with cheese on it is the absolute best in Kansas. I try to eat there every time I get back in town. Their fresh hot salsa is also to die for.

Yelp
On 12-06-2022, we went in for a family dinner. We had 6 adults and 3 kids. We've been going to Connie's for over 20 years. Always had great experiences. Last night I was VERY disappointed. The service and food were good; however, we were taken advantage of when it came to the bill. Not only were we not given an itemization of the bill, just a total. For 9 people, we were overcharged. Our fault, we didn't realize until we got home. They charged us $190 for 6 adult and 3 kid meals. When I redid the math, our total should have only been $130. And then we tipped on the $190, in addition to being overcharged. When I went to work (right down the street) today and told them what happened, a bunch of the businessmen said they quit going there because they've had similar experiences. I'm not sure what kind of scam is happening here, but for longtime customers, this is very disappointing. We will not be going back.

Yelp
The food is great and the portion sizes are huge!! The customer service is horrible but we keep going.

Zhurka S.

Yelp
I grew up in Wichita and am 73 years old. Having left 50 years ago and haven't been back. I made my home deep in Mexico so long ago and I now find myself wondering about how much my hometown has changed. My first taste of Mexican food was at Connie's Mexico Cafe. I was 23 years old and had never tasted anything so good. I was hooked from the first visit and visited many times before moving away. It is now time to return for a visit. One the first places I will go is Connie's.
google avatar

Brad S.

Yelp
It should have been a warning that during my busy Saturday lunchtime visit to this restaurant in the largest Hispanic neighborhood in the city there were absolutely no Hispanic people that weren't employees. It should have also been a warning that the majority of the menu was based around ground beef. I don't need to go to a restaurant and pay somebody for the first and easiest form of meat that people learn to cook. So it came down to choosing between a burrito with the pork or the one with their chorizo. I couldn't imagine eating a giant burrito filled with proper chorizo, so I went for the pork. Not that I ate the entire giant burrito in this case either, as the pork bites had been left sitting for too long, resulting in flavors running the gamut from 'dry' to 'hideously dry'. It was covered in a beef chili that was thin, greasy, and lacking in meat. I liked the salsas. I severely doubt the Connie's is under any delusions that they are creating authentic Mexican cooking, as you can walk to the end of the block, order from one of the taco trucks stationed in the Nomar Plaza and have a Mexican food experience that's infinitely better in all objective aspects of cooking. There are plenty of people who do like what Connie's is creating, but good lord I am not one of them.
google avatar

Tori R.

Yelp
We came for a late lunch. I personally ordered the steak fajita Monterey. It was ok. The steak was extremely overdone and I personally thought the whole dish was salty. My sister in law ordered two chicken enchiladas and when the Order first came out it has the wrong meat. When the new plate came out the chicken was room temperature. The prices are a little high compared to other restaurants in the area. The service was A+. Never had to ask for a refill and once she noticed the incorrect order for my sister she took it back without hesitation
google avatar

E M.

Yelp
Not authentic. Too midwestern-ized. If you walk into a place and it's not full of Mexicans, it's usually not a good sign. I have only been here twice (due to friends request) and each time the food was not good. I will say the salsas on the table aren't bad.

Reaba D.

Yelp
Ordered through DoorDash; Although my tacos were not chicken like I had ordered, the ground beef tacos were very tasty and lets not forget the delicious rice and beans!! I would recommend this place and will definitely be a returning customer!! :)

Yelp
We dined at Connie's early on a Saturday evening. It was very cold and sleeting outside and the restaurant was nice and warm. My husband got the pork burrito with cheese sauce. This is his favorite dish and often leaves his office for lunch at Connie's. My son and I each ordered the the combination which includes a crunchy taco, bean tostada and cheese enchilada. The sauce on the enchilada is rich and flavorful. The bean tostada was amazingly flavorful. The taco texture was nice and crunchy and the ingredients were fresh but the tacos needed either more seasoning in the ground beef or more cheese in the taco. I will definitely order the combo again and ask for a little extra cheese in the taco. Very nice family who own the restaurant. I'm glad we have Connie's in Wichita.

Yelp
My wife and I have been going to Connie's for years, and always have had a good experience, until tonight, Wednesday November 20, 2019. We decided to eat a fairly early dinner, and went into Connie's at 3:50 pm. It was just us and one other couple in the restaurant. We sat there eating chips and sauce much longer than normal waiting to order. After about 15 minutes, the waitress finally took our order. It took another 25 minutes to receive our food. In the mean time, while waiting for our food, the kids/staff were in the kitchen area screaming and yelling and chasing each other around snapping each other with wet towels. When our food finally arrived, both of our meals were cold! I overheard one employee say the manager would not be in until around 5:00 pm. It appears to us, these young employees need to be under much closer supervision! Then to top it off, the cashier was rude, she took our money and just walked off without saying anything, thank you or nothing. IF we ever go back, it will be later in the evening when management is present.

Nicholas K.

Yelp
Harrison Ford i lost a lot of respect for you after eating at this place. After reading an article that said this place was the top rated restaurant in Wichita we thought we would give it a try. What a disappointment. First off the place was discussing. The floor looked like it hadn't been vacuumed in weeks. My wife decided not to eat anything. My food was actually decent, but nothing special. Our group all ordered margaritas but it tasted more like lemonade. Was basically see thru and didn't have much flavor. Their menu was pretty basic, steak and chicken. No seafood that wasn't battered, no shrimp or anything like that. No reason to return here.
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
Love the beans and rice. Also, I love the homage they pay to Connie. Something about her reminds me of my great grandma and something about being in the warm, welcoming restaurant makes me think of being in her house once again. Its very nostalgic for me to go there.
google avatar

Larry M.

Yelp
Fajitas sucked! Huge hunks of tough grisly beef. Definitely not what I'm used to from Connie's. I will check one more time in a few weeks. Toppings? Great, plenty, but don't try and cover up tough grisly meat with toppings.

martha l.

Yelp
Grew up eating Connie's and sad to say it is not what it used to be. Chips stale, salsa was like tomatoes out of can, taco soggy, beans were not refried, rice bland and cheese enchiladas were super wimpy. The sauce on the enchiladas did taste like the Connie's I was expecting.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
Went in after our horrible experience at another Mexican restaurant that we ended up leaving. I got the Monterrey, my husband got the Chorizo with beans. The salsa was wonderful with the chips. Would have loved to got more but didn't want to pay for more chips. The food was FANTASTIC!! Portions were huge. Service was good, the place was very busy, which we like to see in a restaurant. We will definitely be going back soon.

Karen M.

Yelp
I haven't been in Connie's since before all the COVID began. I ordered the Monterey and it had to be the worst Monterey I have ever had in my entire life. Taco shop has a better Monterey for a third of the price. I won't be going back.
google avatar

LizzyLynn G.

Yelp
Very Good! :)The #crispy #tacos are amazing! The beans have the best flavor. When I first get my order, I put one bean in my mouth and slowly eat it. I do this to #taste the mouth watering flavors. Connie is a talented cook. I bet her house is always packed at the holidays. YUMMY :)

Yelp
Great place for food. Been going here since I can't remember 1971. Great food in a friendly family atmosphere. My fav Mexican food on Wichita

Yelp
Garbage service. Garbage food. Give it a try. The food looked like someone already ate it once. Super greasy. Yuck

Yelp
Had not been to Connie's in 20 years. I took the family and have to say that it was definitely not what I remembered. It was not bad food just not a lot of flavor. Service was very good.

Yelp
First time here and was very impressed! I got the All Meat Burrito with lettuce and a side of sour cream. Had a mouthgasm! Oh my god! Staff were very friendly and constantly checked on us. Only thing I hated was the outside of the entrance. It's fairly close to the open street so it can be dangerous for kids. Other than that, I'm definitely coming back!
