Consiglio's is located in New Haven's Wooster Square area, a few steps away from the original Pepe's Pizza. Consiglio's has been in the neighborhood for three generations since the 1930s.
What we ordered and its respective reviews:
- Stuffed Mushrooms (stuffed with local sweet sausage, roasted peppers, mozzarella, and spinach) - Very salty. Well stuffed with sausage, roasted peppers, mozzarella, and spinach, but I couldn't finish the entire entree due to some parts being incredibly salty while others were dull; perhaps a rushed order and not enough quality control. 6/10.
- Fried Calamari (tossed with secret spices, served with marinara) - There's nothing quite like fried calamari as an appetizer. It's easy to receive a bad batch that's too greasy or fishy, but Consiglio's did a fantastic job with theirs. Very flavorful rings of squid that were lightly battered and then delicately fried without any unwanted residual aftertastes. 10/10.
- Homemade Pappardelle Bolognese (ground beef, veal, pork, and vegetables slowly simmered in a fresh tomato sauce, a dollop of fresh local ricotta) - We had high hopes for their house pappardelle bolognese, but ultimately were disappointed. Identical to the Stuffed Mushrooms, our entree was very salty. Unfortunately, we couldn't eat more than a few bites of it. 4/10.
We went on Valentine's Day at 7 pm. Upon entering the restaurant, it was extremely busy and overcrowded. There was hardly any space to walk to the washroom. We were welcomed by the (very kind) hostess before being greeted by our (also very kind) server. However, there were a few nuisances immediately. It took a very long time for our orders to be plated. It took 25 minutes for our appetizers to come out, then after finishing our appetizers (and house salads), it took another 30 minutes for our main entrees to come out. Quite disappointing. We didn't want to disturb any employees since we understand they were already very occupied. Perhaps next time, if you expect to have a larger crowd, increase the number of employees or lower the seating capacity. Again, there were so many tables that it was difficult to walk to the washroom without bumping into someone's coat or handbag. I understand it could've been an anamoly, given it was Valentine's Day, so perhaps a re-try would be necessary to give an updated review.
