The Best Restaurants Around Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO), According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"This cozy cafe at the heart of busy Higuera Street is a standout for its Mexican cooking, paired with creative coffee drinks. A cheese-stuffed chile relleno comes topped with red sauce, while salsa roja chilaquiles make for a spicy and satisfying breakfast. The cafe may be best known for its tascalate, a pre-Hispanic drink with roasted corn, roasted cacao, piloncillo (brown sugar), and annatto seeds; Corazon’s version adds milk and espresso, calling it a “Tascalatte.” Other favorites from the coffee menu include the Mayan mocha and the Mexican candy-inspired mazapan latte." - Rebecca Roland

So thrilled to finally check out Corazon Cafe! The mocha was heavenly 🤤 my wrap was sooooo good and the asada was really tender and flavorful! My husband had the chilaquiles and loved the grilled chicken too. The service was quick and everyone was so friendly. Can’t wait to go back and try the rest of the menu!!! Thanks for an amazing breakfast 💛

Google
First time here and definitely will be returning! We ordered chile relleno with chicken tamale and chilaquiles with chorizo and cafe de olla. So delicious! I went back and ordered a concha and coyota - both were delightful! The staff were very friendly and provide great customer service. Hey here early because they get busy! The food and service were amazing - you will not be disappointed!

Google
I have been here three times now and each time received welcoming and friendly service. Their Tescalatte latte was bomb AF. More recently, I had their torta and it is delicious! The chips were perfect, the bread had a surprisingly soft texture which I loved. I loved the variety of veggies used for the torta and the unsweetened hibiscus tea (you can sweeten yourself), which makes this place a healthier choice option than most restaurants in my book! I saw a review that complained about the prices but it is right in line with any restaurant you would find downtown. It is worth supporting small local businesses! You can't find these flavors anywhere else in SLO.

Google
Fantastic spot! Staff was super friendly and it was a wonderful place to hang out for a bit. Plenty of space around lunch time on a week day. Chilaquiles were excellent and so was the horchata matcha latte.

Google
I love the family owned vibe, loved that they have tasty food, and overall options for all types of diets. It’s right on the Main Street where other shops are, making it easy to walk around after. I’d come again!

Google
The chilaquiles and the Mayan latte were boom!!! 💥👌 The vibe and service was great!👍 A little pricey but still worth it 🙃

Google
The breakfast burrito had a ton of flavor, but could’ve used more eggs. I ordered mine with chicken and was almost all chicken. It was great, if you’re a meat lover. I was sad they didn’t have avocado either, but that’s just my preference. The chicken tacos were amazing! The hibiscus Arnold Palmer was delicious. The place is small, but colorful, with nice window seats and some outdoor seating, for good people watching in downtown SLO. Would definitely recommend, overall.

Google
Super friendly staff and very quick service! Gerald was awesome and gave great suggestions on food/coffee. We got the chilaquiles with sirloin asada to share, it was so full of flavor and beautifully presented. I got the Horchatte latte iced, it was delicious and not overly sweet! My boyfriend got the Mazapan latte, hot, and for someone who doesn’t normally get sweetened coffee, he loved it! Will be back soon, thank you Corazon Cafe for an excellent breakfast experience 🩷

Yelp
Such a cute, welcoming spot in SLO. We ordered chilaquiles and huevos rancheros, which came out quickly and were tasty and fresh. It's great that they have vegan options clearly outlined. They also have fun, creative drink options in addition to the regular stuff. They featured local student artists and run a community program -- definitely a meaningful place to support.

Yelp
Run. Don't walk to the greatest, most authentic Mexican food in town. Best Chili Rellanos ever! And the Dobladitas with house made chorizo are my new obsession. The Chefs Chencho and Pedro, and Sara are masters at taking farmers market veggies and incorporating them into the most delectable Mexican dishes. We had empanadas and other sweet treats from the case with a warm hot chocolate. Came back the same day for the best pozoles in all the land. The service was warm and impeccable. Skip every other place in town and try the Corazon cafe.

Yelp
Great little family run cafe. Food was delicious. Chilaquiles were on point as was the Breakfast burrito and Tamal. Prices seem a bit high for the area but it is what it is. Experience was good .
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious we had coffee de Jolla an empanada de crema y guayaba, we devoured that so no pic available. Then chilaquiles rojo were delicious I would have love some fresh avocado and OM eggs but it was delicious! Customer service was excellent great experience! We will be back and this time the hubs and I will not share lol! Also I recommend adding a protein it all just looked so good!!
google avatar

Daisee F.

Yelp
Cute breakfast spot! I tried the chilaquiles and got a Mayan mocha to go. The chilaquiles had good flavor and a perfect portion for me. You can add protein to them but I opted to leave them as. The person who took my order was super kind and patient. Only downside is the place is small so people had to squeeze by to get through. It's self seating and there isn't a whole lot of seating so it's best for smaller groups or couples.

Yelp
Quick and friendly service! The food feels very authentic and the decor is very traditional. It is a bit tight but not terrible, probably not good for big groups but perfect for 1-2 people. Pozole- a little different than what I'm used to but a good portion and great flavor. Perfect on a cold rainy day. I didn't quite get the pickled onions but the jalapeños were a nice touch of heat. You'll need to season to taste though as it's just the base dish. Overall really good food and authentic, check it out if you're in the area!

Yelp
Great local spot with fun cafe drinks and great food. Food comes out slow so take your time and hang out for a while. Horchata - creamy and sweet! Sunrise wrap with added chorizo - full of eggs and meat, nicely griddled shut. Chilaquiles - nice basic chilaquiles, nothing too special. Pickled onions are a nice touch.
google avatar

Maritza L.

Yelp
The most delicious food, you can tell everything is made from scratch and the service is amazing. Everyone was so sweet and helpful. Also the lattes are amazing. The place is super cute too
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this new cafe, but just wasn't impressed. The service was friendly, and the interior is really colorful with cute decor. We ordered the Green Chicken Tamale, Chile Relleno, and Horchatte. The plating was pretty but the food was underwhelming. Paid about $20 for one tamale with a side of rice and beans. I feel like it was lacking in flavor and not worth the price. The coffee was good and strong which I enjoyed, but may be too much for some. However, I love everything they stand for (family-owned & very community centric) so I will be back soon to give them another try.
google avatar

Yelp
Sweet little all day b-fast lunch coffee spot with some gift items for purchase as well. Super friendly service and the space, though small, is well set up and well stylized. The huevos rancheros were absolutely delicious and with a coffee, it was a perfect breakfast. I can tell everything there is deeeeliiiish!
google avatar

Jolene H.

Yelp
I ordered the chilaquiles with chorizo (+$4) and it was amazing! I considered adding steak asada instead but that was +$6. Flavors were great and the food continued STEAMING even halfway through eating. Staff is very kind. The decor is nice but there isn't much seating for larger groups.
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Delicious food, friendly staff, and a great place for a casual brunch! The owner and barista were both super kind and helpful, explaining their menu and providing recommendations on what to order. For drinks we ordered the Mayan Mocha and Horchata latte. Both were delicious -- not too sweet yet still very flavorful. To eat, we ordered the current special which was a Torta Ahogada. This was HUGE and easily fed the two of us. The ingredients tasted fresh and the food came out hot, straight from the kitchen. We also had an empanada which was delicious. However, I would probably skip the other pastries next time. Overall, for the service and quality of food, I was really impressed! I would definitely come here again to try other menu items and get a filling breakfast. Support local and try this place out :)

Yelp
Cut and pasted from the owner's message: "Corazon means heart in Spanish." Quality/Quantity - Wow, I mean WOW! What a find. Both my daughter and I Yelped this place separately and wanted to go; it was meant to be. The food is amazing! Sunrise Wrap - Added California Chili Verde Pork. This did not look appetizing, see picture. But when I bit into it, it tasted so good. Had a small "kick" to it. Decent portions, as my daughter was only able to finish half of this. Corn Dobladitas - Add Yucatan Chicken Mole. Well, I can NOT even describe this dish. First of all, it was plated perfectly, picture perfect, see picture. The flavors... The chicken melted in my mouth. You JUST have to try it for yourself! They have many specials, see pictures. Atmosphere - Small local business, support local. Cool decor throughout. See pictures. Just a really cool neat spot. Limited indoor and outdoor seating, I saw a large party walk in and right out. Shared bathrooms and you need a code. The code is posted on the wall as you walk out towards the shared bathrooms. Open 7 days a week from 7am or 9am to 3pm or 5pm. Metered street parking, but I park a quarter mile away in the free residential areas. Service - Counter service. Price - Approx $45+, sorry my daughter paid and did not get a receipt. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since May of 2023. I WILL be a regular customer.

Yelp
Best breakfast chorizo burrito! The roasted veggies inside add texture and make the perfect bites.

Yelp
My friend and I were doing an ambitious train journey from SoCal to the Bay, and decided to make a little stop at San Luis Obispo before changing trains! I'm glad we did so we could try something yummy in SLO. WHAT I ORDERED: Iced mazapan latte Chilaquiles with carne asada FOOD + COFFEE: When I try out a coffee shop I always try to see if they have anything unique, and in this case, I definitely wanted to try the mazapan latte. It definitely tasted like the mazapan we know and love, and it was perfectly sweetened and balanced with the espresso. The chilaquiles were wonderful, and the presentation was beautiful too. Very flavorful and the carne asada was well-seasoned too. SERVICE: The staff were amazing! We had a nice conversation with the person working at the counter, and food didn't take too long to come out. VIBES: Super comfy vibes, and I loved how decorated it was. We saw quite a few people catching up with friends and just overall a cute space. BOTTOM LINE: So glad we decided to pop into this place and would love to come back next time I'm in SLO.
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
Delicious! I wasn't sure what to order. I went with the owner's suggestion of the corn diabladitas with carne asada. It was prepared quickly and had a great presentation. Music was at a nice volume- present but not too loud. Service friendly.
google avatar

Diana G.

Yelp
I tried really hard to like it because of all of the good reviews, but I ordered green chilaquiles and they were unable to change the eggs from scrambled to over easy. I ordered a regular coffee and it was lukewarm and tasted very watered down. Once I received the food, the chilaquiles were not flavorful and were extremely soggy. The cashier was nice and it was cute inside (great music) but I don't think I'll be coming back.
google avatar

Anthony M.

Yelp
I came here back in November twice with my girlfriend and I wanted to make sure I left a review as it is deserved. If you are ever in the area visiting SLO, you must come here at least once. I ordered the chilaquiles for breakfast 2 days in a row when I was there because they were my favorite. We also really enjoyed the hibiscus tea. When walking in you are met with some vibrant colors as well as some culture displayed along the walls. It was a very cute spot to eat at and the people working were very friendly/ welcoming. Gracias por todo and I hope to visit again!
google avatar

Sara C.

Yelp
Delicious latte, horchata, and chilaquiles. Staff was friendly and attentive, we loved it and will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Loved the ambience, loved all the cute art. Options to sit inside or al fresco. The food was so yummy and our waiter to so helpful! Food came out within a reasonable time as well. Highly Recc!
google avatar

Cristina R.

Yelp
Food was amazing ; it was a bit crowded when we arrived , late morning for brunch, so we had to wait - after ordering the food - for a table to be vacant . It was less crowded when we left . Loved the cafe de olla as well :)
google avatar

Cheryl R.

Yelp
The restaurant was packed on a Saturday morning. We ordered from the counter but felt rushed with the line. Ambience was cozy and warm. We chose outdoor dining that was pleasant. My chilaquiles were fresh and crunchy and eggs were delicious. It did seem a bit dry and could've used more green sauce. My husband did not care for the pancakes, although the fruit was fresh. There didn't appear to be many "breakfasty" dishes to choose from. Cappuccino was delicious.
google avatar

Carmen H.

Yelp
This place is cute, small with food and drink options. I ordered the chile relleno and torta with chorizo. Each of these cost $18 which is pretty expensive considering it's not a sit down restaurant. You order at the counter and then they bring the food to you. A torta from a panadería usually costs $10 max same for chile relleno, so these are certainly on the pricy side. That said, the flavor of the chile relleno was great. I'd give 5 stars for food, service, and ambience, but 3 stars for price of what you get. The specialty coffee drinks are worth a try with unique, delicious flavors. Free self serve water cups and public restroom shared with a couple other establishments are a plus.
google avatar

T P.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday for breakfast. I ordered the chilaquiles. It took awhile for the food to come out, almost 20 minutes. Prior to ordering the chilaquiles, I inquired about the pozole. It was $16 for a cup (guy who took my order showed me the serving size with his hands). I commented that it's very expensive for a cup for $16. The chilaquiles were bland, boring. I added pepper, salt and hot sauce on the table. My friend enjoyed his chorizo burrito. I would come back to try the pozole but not for that price.
google avatar

Nick V.

Yelp
We had a sweet corn tamale and the Sunrise Wrap with "crispy bacon". The food was fresh and service was friendly. The ingredients in the wrap were generous and the tamale was great. However, the bacon wasn't crispy, but rather soft and chewy. Also, there was a significant amount of grease at the bottom of both sides of the wrap. We also had an iced Mayan Latte, which was tasty and unique. I liked that it wasn't too sweet. The ambiance was cute, but crowded. I would go again, but not get the wrap. I can tell that the staff take pride in their work and put love into the food.

Yelp
Located in the heart of downtown SLO, this place has such a cute, warm vibe inside with lots of adorable decor that makes you feel like you walked into a little cafe in Mexico. Keep in mind parking can be difficult since it's downtown where the areas are metered, but there are parking structures within walking distance. Ordered some coffee and breakfast wraps with bacon for carry out. The food does take a while to come out but that's okay because it comes out very hot and delicious (they use super fresh veggies and ingredients and you can tell - yum)! The coffee was also extremely delicious, and they have a pretty large coffee selection for being such a small place which is great. Keep in mind the menu is quite limited so it is not a full, extensive menu like you would expect at other typical breakfast spots. Overall, super cute little spot in SLO!
google avatar

Brett N.

Yelp
Great cafe in downtown SLO! Lovely decor, friendly staff, nice authentic Mexican cuisine including some great vegan options, hot and cold drinks, and pastries. Cozy dining area and a few outdoor seats in front. Consistent quality, efficient service, and nicely curated rotating artwork on the walls.

Yelp
This place is delicious, it's my 3rd time when In SLO. Prices are fair ! Food is authentic and not to mention the service. Small place and not many tables but seems tables open up quickly . 10/10!
google avatar

Kiki S.

Yelp
This place was amazing! I will be back the next time I'm in SLO! I got the dobladitas with mole and it was epic! Service was friendly, helpful and fast. Environment was casual and comfortable. Loved it!
google avatar

Grettel A.

Yelp
I ordered the chilaquiles and I added mole. The pickled onions were perfect. The cops were delicious, and the mole was PERFECT. The aguas frescas were so good and the torta ahogada is a must try! The young man at the counter was so friendly and super helpful. The cafe is really cute and I will be back tomorrow.
google avatar

Juana S.

Yelp
Corazon Cafe will now have a piedacito de mí corazon. The comida is so delicious y el cafe sooo good. The Horchatte is a MUST try as well as the Tascalatte. Such a beautiful restaurant.
google avatar

Noel D.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in SLO! Very authentic Mexican with delicious flavors, warm colorful atmosphere, and friendly staff. What to get: Food: Chilaquiles, pancakes, pozole! Drink: Literally ANY latte!! Be adventurous! You are doing yourself a disservice by not trying their traditional Mexican coffees like Mazapan (peanut butter amazingness), Tascalatte (roasted corn), Vegan Horchata (best I've ever had), and Champurrado latte (no caffeine) Junior is wonderful always smiling and happy to help and answer questions. I would recommend for anyone. Compliments to the chef and owners on such a welcoming restaurant.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
Came here on an out of town trip. Had the breakfast burrito and it was excellent! The sauce that came with it was also super tasty and had a nice kick. Can't recommend it enough. Service was really good and quaint little place with nice ambiance.

Angela A.

Yelp
Found this perfect gem while in SLO. The ambiance was casual and inviting. The staff acknowledged us a soon as we stepped inside. The aroma of the fresh ground coffee being made was amazing. We ordered three different dishes and they all were delicious. My FIL couldn't stop raving about the green pozole. I fell in love with the champurrado latte. Can't wait to try it again

Ian S.

Yelp
Incredible food and service!! We had a large group and they were super kind and accommodating. The Chilaquiles fiesta, quesadilla delight and concha's were all so so good.
google avatar

Bob G.

Yelp
Food, service, and ambiance are excellent. The food is not your typical California Mexican cuisine. I had the chile rellenos. The whole dish was spiced perfectly. A little spice that would linger. The taste was a fusion of Mexican and Mayan cuisine. Highly recommend the Corazón Cafe.
google avatar

Berta B.

Yelp
This restaurant is small, but cute. They don't have a large selection of food which was not a problem for me but my husband didn't really liked the options. We ended up ordering chilaquiles with carne asada and pancakes for our kids. The chilaquiles were really good but I would have loved a little more salsa on them, they were a little dry in my opinion. My children loved the pancakes. The highlight of my meal was the orchata, it was delicious. The service was good, the girl at the register was friendly and helpful, she helped us decide on what to order. I appreciated her help since it was our first time there. As I had previously mentioned the restaurant is small, but we were able to find a small table my the large window which was nice because we could look outside. They don't have restrooms inside the restaurant, they only have public restrooms that are also used by other establishments in the location. It was nice to eat there once, but I'm not sure I would return.
google avatar

Amy V.

Yelp
Hubby and I stopped in for a late lunch, and we really liked it. Hubby had been looking for a place that serves good chilaquiles, and a friend recommended Corazon Cafe. He ordered his with chorizo, and I had a veggie quesadilla plus mole chicken. Both were generous portions and so tasty! We also ordered a chicken tamale a la carte, and it was very good. I'm so happy we decided to stop by and I'm looking forward to coming again. Next time I want to come for breakfast and try the Berrylicious pancake stack, which comes with chocolate infused maple syrup. That and a Mayan Mocha will make my day. The menu is small, but that just means that they do a great job with what they make.
google avatar

Monica B.

Yelp
This cafe has so much character and is a cultural experience in and of itself. The food items we have ordered have all been yummy and fresh but the chilaquiles are thee best. They have some really unique coffee drinks that you won't be able enjoy anywhere else around here!
google avatar

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite places to get authentic tasting food. Service is quick and both dishes I ordered were amazing, the sopas have pickled onions that is divine. The spanish rice is wonderful and the burrito was not only filling, but we ordered an extra one so I could take it with me on a hike in the morning. Do yourself a favor and go to Corazon Cafe and taste their amazing flavors! Corny I know, but their cooked corn garnish epic. Lastly, they have a bunch of adult beverages that compliment the meal. Overall A
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
Visited after a Friday morning hike. I ordered the Pork Pozole with an ice cold bottle of Coca Cola. Pozole was delicious and satisfying. Staff member was friendly and helpful. A great experience. I'll be back to try something else off the menu. Thanks!
google avatar

Erin E.

Yelp
i literally come here too much, but these are the BEST chilaquiles in town. it's a little pricey but the plate is stacked with chilaquiles, eggs cooked to your liking, some sort of protein if you want (my go to is asada) - so much so that i have to take half home. i'm not usually a fan of red salsa either, but corazon's is just so good. their coffee is also so fun! my favorite is the mazapan latte, which makes the coffee peanut-y and rich but not like peanut butter. they crush mazapan in the drink so at the bottom there is a bunch of yummy mazapan bits to drink up. i'll probably be back again this week haha
google avatar

Deb G.

Yelp
Que delicioso! This place is sweet and cozy. The service is so friendly and delightful. The Chilaquiles are wonderful, flavorful and ample servings. The Mazapan Latte is also delicious as well as beautiful and artfully served hot. We go to San Luis Obispo just to eat breakfast here when we are lucky enough to be in the city. Highly recommend/very authentic Yucatan influence. Love it!
google avatar

Cynthia D.

Yelp
Perfect! Soooo good, every one of our choices, delicious Fresh watermelon & cantaloupe juices made that day, so refreshing delicious. Very friendly staff, good service & the aroma coming from the kitchen when you walk in is so welcoming.
google avatar

Rudy H.

Yelp
Beautiful and very tasty Mexican restaurant in downtown SLO. The service was excellent. Greeted with a big smile and friendly advice on what to order. The freshly squeezed orange juice was very good. I also had the cucumber water which was very refreshing. The red chilaquiles were some of the best. The sauce was very flavorful and not too spicy. The addition of the steak was perfect. The restaurant is very nicely decorated with Mexican folk art. Enjoy. Buen Provecho!
google avatar

Carlos C.

Yelp
Friendly service, nice ambiance and delicious food and coffee. Chilaquiles was the perfect portion and great taste. Cafe de Olla probably best I've had!
google avatar

Rhett F.

Yelp
Great Chilaquiles! Great drinks if you like Mexican coffee! Owner was behind the counter, super nice guy, would definitely recommend. We ate on the street and had a wonderful time, absolutely recommend. I had a Bidi bidi bon bon which was sweet and my mom had a Mexican coffee. If you are a fan of good Mexican food and Mexican style coffee you'll love it here. Our asada chilaquiles were cooked to perfection, a wonderful mixture of both the perfect amount of sogginess while still having crunch.
google avatar

Irvin C.

Yelp
Amazing food and coffee! A must try in downtown SLO! Service was quick! And the overall design inside the place was very nice! Owners are from Chiapas, México. I've visited and have family there, food and coffee reminded me of there instantly!

Yelp
Great tasting food! We had the Sunrise wrap with steak and it was so delicious the vegetables were fresh tasting and the meet was nice and tender. To drink We order the Mayan mocha and the Tascalate, they both were awesome !!! Definitely a place to get a very tasty breakfast any time. I also loved the ambience music and the guys were very friendly and welcoming.
