The Best Restaurants Around Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO), According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"This cozy cafe at the heart of busy Higuera Street is a standout for its Mexican cooking, paired with creative coffee drinks. A cheese-stuffed chile relleno comes topped with red sauce, while salsa roja chilaquiles make for a spicy and satisfying breakfast. The cafe may be best known for its tascalate, a pre-Hispanic drink with roasted corn, roasted cacao, piloncillo (brown sugar), and annatto seeds; Corazon’s version adds milk and espresso, calling it a “Tascalatte.” Other favorites from the coffee menu include the Mayan mocha and the Mexican candy-inspired mazapan latte." - Rebecca Roland

Google
Great place. The chilaquiles verdes with carne asada and chicken were delicious, the breakfast wrap was filling, and the berry pancakes were fluffy. The Vanilla Latte was good but the Tascalatte(warm) and Mayan Mocha(cold) were excellent too. Friendly service, highly recommend. Muy bueno🔥

Google
This is a cozy and vibrant cafe centered on Higuera street With indoor and outdoor door seating. The servers are very welcoming and take their time to explain the different menu options. Honestly looking around at the food being served everything looked delicious. We decided to try the Mayan mocha which was so delicious ! It’s creamy chocolate with hints of cinnamon and espresso. Definitely going back for that one. My husband ordered the Tescalatte which is a roasted corn latte. He really enjoyed the unique flavor. It wasnt too sweet and had smooth texture. The guava pastry was really good it was warm with a flaky crust and delicious guava cheese center. We would 100% recommend this place

Google
The food was exceptional!! We ordered the Pollo Tamales Plate, The Chilaquiles and the Jalapeño with Cheese Tamale. Everything was absolutely delicious!! We are hoping to come back on our next trip. The service was excellent and the staff was friendly, Must try the coffees too!!❤️

Google
Beautiful cozy little coffee spot in SLO. There was an indoor and outdoor seating. The staff is friendly and helpful. We tried the Mayan mocha and expresso. My elderly mother really enjoyed her Sunday afternoon people watching and enjoying her coffee. The coffee was sooo good! Hints of chocolate and cinnamon. We also tried a pastry which was flaky and flavorful. We will be back again soon!

Google
Delicious food and drink, and great service! It’s rare to see a vegetarian pozole on the menu, so I had to try it out. Highly recommend this, even my 5 year old daughter loved it! We fought over who got the leftovers. The breakfast wrap was equally delicious. I opted for an oatmilk latte (which was great), but wish I would’ve tried one of their specialty drinks! The atmosphere was fun, vibrant and cozy. Service was great too! The young man behind the counter was friendly and gracious. Another man (I’m guessing the owner?) came by and checked in on our meal and chatted a bit with us- super friendly!

Google
Service is great! Food came out quickly! Had enough time to sit down and enjoy while on my lunch break— hard to find a place, order and eat in under 30 minutes in Downtown SLO. Chicken tamales à la carte, so so so good. A little gem!

DM R.

Google
Great place for breakfast! We tried the tascalatte, which was really unique and delicious. For food, we had the chilaquiles and the green pozole. The chilaquiles were tasty, I just wished they were a bit more spicy, and the pozole was flavorful.

Mark K

Google
Just amazing! We went there twice during our visit and the young man that helped us both times was so helpful about the latte options. On the second visit he helped us get our to go order in time for us to catch our flight. Great tasting crafted coffee drinks. Highly recommend!

Yelp
The food and drinks here are amazing!!! I ordered the red chilaquiles and they were so delicious. They tasted authentic and with handmade tortillas. The food is definitely a must if you decide to come here! The service was a 10/10. The workers are super kind and welcoming. I was able to talk to who I'm assuming was the owner. He was very kind and I talked to him about some of the artwork stuff they sell. This place has a great ambiance, with Latino music playing and the decorations. They have board games that you can borrow and play if you have a group with you! This place sells Mexican artwork and clothing as well. I love to support this!

Yelp
I didn't say grace before I ate but my first spoonful of pazole had me feeling blessed. Couldn't recommend it any higher. I'm someone that typically doctors my soups with various things (oregano, onion, hot sauce, etc.) and there was nothing to add here. It was all there, along with a lime wedge to add a little citrus kick. My mocha was super on point and my gf loved her latte. The chilaquiles were a casualty of greatness in that they were good but paled in comparison to the soup and coffee. We'll definitely be back. Service was great. Inside space was a little tight but seating was readily available outside and we were checked on with perfect cadence. Try it or diet? Do yourself a favor and try it.

Yelp
Yummy breakfast. We had huevos rancheros and pancakes. They have a wide and interesting selection of coffees, machas and horchatas. No frills. Just delicious food snd good service. We love a place where our dog is welcome.

Yelp
Stopped by for breakfast and luckily snagged some metered street parking. So many ppl came in so I knew we were in the right place! Ordered the chilaquiles and they were great. Employees were friendly and service was quick. They had a little table outside and someone brought their dog which was cute.

Yelp
This is our go-to coffee shop whenever we're in town! It's a cozy Mexican-style café and restaurant that always delivers amazing drinks, pastries, and food. This time I tried the mole burrito -- I thought I'd like it a bit more, but I'm still glad I gave it a try. That's one of the best things about this place: there are always so many delicious options to choose from. The only downside is how small the space is -- good luck finding a seat, especially on weekends. It's always pretty crowded when we go, but never enough to keep us from coming back. Definitely worth the stop every time!

Yelp
The food was so delicious! Came for my bday and was our first time trying this place . The chilaquiles were to die for ! We also got a lemonade which is so refreshing and an Arnold Palmer . The staff were incredibly friendly . Will definitely come back to try more dishes .

Yelp
Corazón Café is such a charming little spot! The staff was super friendly and welcoming, and the vibe is very much a simple, order-at-the-counter and sit-down café--perfect for a quick, delicious bite. Seating is somewhat limited, with mostly bar tops and two-tops, so it's better for smaller groups than larger parties. We tried the horchata latte, and it was absolutely delicious--sweet, smooth, and perfectly balanced. The red sauce chilaquiles were amazing, with just the right amount of flavor and heat. We added asada to ours; while the meat was a little chewy, it was still a nice protein option. The corn dobladitas with asada were also tasty and fresh, though I'd probably order them again without protein next time since the flavors stood out better on their own. Overall, everything was flavorful and satisfying. We'll definitely be back to try more from the menu--it feels like one of those places where you discover a new favorite each time.

Yelp
This place is very authentic. Legit food and good service. Busboy was quick and the outdoor patio seating was chill on Higuera. The burrito with chile verde is a must! Never had a breakfast burrito with squash and cauliflower, but now I crave it!
google avatar

Carey D.

Yelp
This place was excellent! We had pozole, tamales, and quesadillas. Vegetarian options were especially appreciated. Service was great and prices were fair.
google avatar

Livier M.

Yelp
OBSESSED! Everything we had at corazón cafe was delicious! Wait staff were super friendly and helped us pick some really great coffee options and the food was a 10/10. That carne asada is what dreams are made of. If any of you have ever heard of that Michelin star asada in Mexico City, this is super close! Meat was juicy and flavorful and paired really well with all of the ingredients. My husband also enjoyed his breakfast burrito and coffee and that man is hard to please when it comes to coffee. Would definitely recommend if you are in the area!

Will T.

Yelp
The BEST tamales! Went back for seconds it was so good then I came back 2 days later to do it again! I'll be coming back to SLO just so I can eat here again! Thank You

Yelp
This coffee shop is such a unique experience. The decor, ambiance, service , and food are all amazing! I got an horchata latte & mazapan latte so good. The chilaquiles were amazing perfect flavor and crisp. I enjoyed eating my food and drinking my coffee here definitely recommend this coffee shop!

Yelp
The Corn Dobladitas GF were fantastic w Chicken. We also had an excellent CaféLatté. I had a wonderful Matcha Green tea Latté. The staff was excellent and pleasant. The whole experience was great. We love walking around downtown San Luis Obispo and finding spots like this.
google avatar

Yelp
Quick and friendly service! The food feels very authentic and the decor is very traditional. It is a bit tight but not terrible, probably not good for big groups but perfect for 1-2 people. Pozole- a little different than what I'm used to but a good portion and great flavor. Perfect on a cold rainy day. I didn't quite get the pickled onions but the jalapeños were a nice touch of heat. You'll need to season to taste though as it's just the base dish. Overall really good food and authentic, check it out if you're in the area!
google avatar

Jolene H.

Yelp
I ordered the chilaquiles with chorizo (+$4) and it was amazing! I considered adding steak asada instead but that was +$6. Flavors were great and the food continued STEAMING even halfway through eating. Staff is very kind. The decor is nice but there isn't much seating for larger groups.
google avatar

Daisee F.

Yelp
Cute breakfast spot! I tried the chilaquiles and got a Mayan mocha to go. The chilaquiles had good flavor and a perfect portion for me. You can add protein to them but I opted to leave them as. The person who took my order was super kind and patient. Only downside is the place is small so people had to squeeze by to get through. It's self seating and there isn't a whole lot of seating so it's best for smaller groups or couples.
google avatar

Caitlin R.

Yelp
Always a lovely experience! I really like their quesadilla here and everyone is so nice!
google avatar

Tasha H.

Yelp
Great local spot with fun cafe drinks and great food. Food comes out slow so take your time and hang out for a while. Horchata - creamy and sweet! Sunrise wrap with added chorizo - full of eggs and meat, nicely griddled shut. Chilaquiles - nice basic chilaquiles, nothing too special. Pickled onions are a nice touch.

Alethea D.

Yelp
Although I only tried the coffee the food looked amazing too! I got the Horchatte and it was delicious! Staff very nice too, will be returning when back in that area!
google avatar

Mitzy A.

Yelp
My favorite place to get coffee in SLO! My sister was visiting and wanted Starbucks, but I told her we could go somewhere better -- and I was right. She got the café de olla and I got the horchata latte, and both were super tasty. Great flavors, friendly vibe, and way better than the usual chain coffee spots!
google avatar

Audrey G.

Yelp
Good vegan options, the vegan chilaquiles came topped in so many veggies, and the chips were a perfect mix of crunchy and salsa-y. Perfect portion size. The workers were great and they had games and cards available! Really cute shop, and it was an easy sit wherever and go up to the front to order deal.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this new cafe, but just wasn't impressed. The service was friendly, and the interior is really colorful with cute decor. We ordered the Green Chicken Tamale, Chile Relleno, and Horchatte. The plating was pretty but the food was underwhelming. Paid about $20 for one tamale with a side of rice and beans. I feel like it was lacking in flavor and not worth the price. The coffee was good and strong which I enjoyed, but may be too much for some. However, I love everything they stand for (family-owned & very community centric) so I will be back soon to give them another try.

Yelp
Cut and pasted from the owner's message: "Corazon means heart in Spanish." Quality/Quantity - Wow, I mean WOW! What a find. Both my daughter and I Yelped this place separately and wanted to go; it was meant to be. The food is amazing! Sunrise Wrap - Added California Chili Verde Pork. This did not look appetizing, see picture. But when I bit into it, it tasted so good. Had a small "kick" to it. Decent portions, as my daughter was only able to finish half of this. Corn Dobladitas - Add Yucatan Chicken Mole. Well, I can NOT even describe this dish. First of all, it was plated perfectly, picture perfect, see picture. The flavors... The chicken melted in my mouth. You JUST have to try it for yourself! They have many specials, see pictures. Atmosphere - Small local business, support local. Cool decor throughout. See pictures. Just a really cool neat spot. Limited indoor and outdoor seating, I saw a large party walk in and right out. Shared bathrooms and you need a code. The code is posted on the wall as you walk out towards the shared bathrooms. Open 7 days a week from 7am or 9am to 3pm or 5pm. Metered street parking, but I park a quarter mile away in the free residential areas. Service - Counter service. Price - Approx $45+, sorry my daughter paid and did not get a receipt. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since May of 2023. I WILL be a regular customer.

Yelp
Good food but very expensive. Portions are ok. I'm not sure I'll return, given the pricing. I'm spoiled to live in an area where one can find excellent Mexican food at reasonable prices. We stopped on the way to another destination.

Yelp
What an absolute gem! My boyfriend and I decided to attempt to squash our craving for chilaquiles and Corazon Cafe didn't disappoint! He got the chilaquiles, and the sauce was fresh and zesty, and the side of chicken mole was one of the best we'd ever had. I got the huevos rancheros to try something else on the menu, and they're AMAZING! Tons of flavor in the egg and beans, and served over kind of a mini quesadilla, which is different than I've ever had. I got a cheese and jalapeño tamal, and it was savory and fluffy, and neither of us could resist the guava and cheese empanadas. Those are HUGE, flaky, and perfectly stuffed. The man who rang us up was incredibly gracious, and our food arrived promptly and well plated. The place itself is cute without being "cutesy," or pretentious, and it's a warm, welcoming environment. I'm not the best photographer, so sorry if the photos are a little blurry, but I was also excited to eat! We can't WAIT to go back next time I'm up in SLO!

Jennet C.

Yelp
10/10 experience. Good delicious, service amazing, clean. I can't wait to come back when we visit SLO again.
google avatar

Yelp
Run. Don't walk to the greatest, most authentic Mexican food in town. Best Chili Rellanos ever! And the Dobladitas with house made chorizo are my new obsession. The Chefs Chencho and Pedro, and Sara are masters at taking farmers market veggies and incorporating them into the most delectable Mexican dishes. We had empanadas and other sweet treats from the case with a warm hot chocolate. Came back the same day for the best pozoles in all the land. The service was warm and impeccable. Skip every other place in town and try the Corazon cafe.
google avatar

Rudy R.

Yelp
The food was so good we went twice for breakfast. We tried the pork tamale, chiliquillas, huevos rancheros, posole and pancakes. The coffee de oja was spot on. Highly recommend when in SLO.
google avatar

Clarissa C.

Yelp
Such a cute, welcoming spot in SLO. We ordered chilaquiles and huevos rancheros, which came out quickly and were tasty and fresh. It's great that they have vegan options clearly outlined. They also have fun, creative drink options in addition to the regular stuff. They featured local student artists and run a community program -- definitely a meaningful place to support.

Yelp
My friend and I were doing an ambitious train journey from SoCal to the Bay, and decided to make a little stop at San Luis Obispo before changing trains! I'm glad we did so we could try something yummy in SLO. WHAT I ORDERED: Iced mazapan latte Chilaquiles with carne asada FOOD + COFFEE: When I try out a coffee shop I always try to see if they have anything unique, and in this case, I definitely wanted to try the mazapan latte. It definitely tasted like the mazapan we know and love, and it was perfectly sweetened and balanced with the espresso. The chilaquiles were wonderful, and the presentation was beautiful too. Very flavorful and the carne asada was well-seasoned too. SERVICE: The staff were amazing! We had a nice conversation with the person working at the counter, and food didn't take too long to come out. VIBES: Super comfy vibes, and I loved how decorated it was. We saw quite a few people catching up with friends and just overall a cute space. BOTTOM LINE: So glad we decided to pop into this place and would love to come back next time I'm in SLO.
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
Delicious! I wasn't sure what to order. I went with the owner's suggestion of the corn diabladitas with carne asada. It was prepared quickly and had a great presentation. Music was at a nice volume- present but not too loud. Service friendly.
google avatar

Manny G.

Yelp
Great little family run cafe. Food was delicious. Chilaquiles were on point as was the Breakfast burrito and Tamal. Prices seem a bit high for the area but it is what it is. Experience was good .
google avatar

Nadia D.

Yelp
Amazing food and great customer service! I love that all menu options can easily be made vegan and the coffee menu is all delicious too. I would highly recommend Corazon for a quick, casual bite for lunch downtown
google avatar

A M.

Yelp
Very kind cashier, great vibes, good music in the back ground. Couldnt even post all my food because it was that good! We got the chilaquiles with chorizo and asada added with both sauces. And the stack of pancakes which came with fruit on it, BOTH WERE BOMB ASH!!!!!!! 10/10 service would come again!!!
google avatar

Jonathan S.

Yelp
These tamales are amazing they melt in you mouth so much flavor. Great food and great vibe.
google avatar

Christian O.

Yelp
Went back for round two! Food was so good! The plates come looking a little light but trust me you will be satiated! The staff is absolutely lovely. My boyfriend and I felt very welcomed and had an amazing breakfast! Unfortunately they need more space. It's a downside to how amazing this place is. It's small and there aren't many tables. My boyfriend and I both had a great breakfast and only paid about $50! Great place to visit.
google avatar

Diana G.

Yelp
I tried really hard to like it because of all of the good reviews, but I ordered green chilaquiles and they were unable to change the eggs from scrambled to over easy. I ordered a regular coffee and it was lukewarm and tasted very watered down. Once I received the food, the chilaquiles were not flavorful and were extremely soggy. The cashier was nice and it was cute inside (great music) but I don't think I'll be coming back.
google avatar

Margaret R.

Yelp
Came into SLO to watch Montana State football game @Cal Poly & decided to try out Corazon Cafe. Heard it was a cute spot serving some unique coffee & yummy food. We ordered a good amount of food n coffee to try it all! Place is cute but small n squishy definitely guests are on top of one another, we were a party of 5 all tables are meant for smaller parties...like literally 2 people, we watched as guests walking in bumping into guests already sitting down eating. Its true coffee was good we got the bidi bidi bum bum latte, mayan mocha, hot chocolate & an arnold palmer. food was NOT good small portions for the price paid all flavors of the food we ordered was off, bland. We ordered the chilaquiles, breakfast wrap, pork pozole, & stack of pancakes. the pancakes only had 3 small thin pancakes NO STACK WHATSOEVER . the pork pozole came highly recommended by the cashier taking our order, the bowl of pozole was SOOO small, 1 small quarter of a lime and a small handful of broken tortilla chips, odd flavor it didn't taste like pozole. the breakfast wrap was very dry no harmony in the wrap at all the food didn't blend well together, the chilaquiles flat again, no flavor the sauce was weak you couldn't taste the meat on it at all. Corazon cafe yes it has good coffee but the authentic Mexican cuisine it portrays to serve, it falls short and wayy too small, guests bumping into others while they are eating not fun at all. The white rice & teriyaki chicken my daughter had on the table was from Panda Express #DoBetterCorazon

Michael V.

Yelp
I have been coming here on and off for about 6 months. Never had a bad meal I love their chili rellenos! Their take on an Arnold Palmer is good jamaica and lemonade
google avatar

Jaidyn N.

Yelp
Best breakfast chorizo burrito! The roasted veggies inside add texture and make the perfect bites.
google avatar

Mar L.

Yelp
The most delicious food, you can tell everything is made from scratch and the service is amazing. Everyone was so sweet and helpful. Also the lattes are amazing. The place is super cute too

Gina L.

Yelp
Great spot ! Hermoso y auténtico sabor . Me encantó la selección y escoji el de Pinole en café frío. La cajera muy amable y sonriente , creó un atmósfera invitante. Gracias regresaré a probar más cafés y su comida. I loved the menu selections and I chose the one with Pinole in iced coffee. Great taste. The lady helping us was friendly and very welcoming. I will return to try more coffee's and their food.
google avatar

Jim P.

Yelp
Sweet little all day b-fast lunch coffee spot with some gift items for purchase as well. Super friendly service and the space, though small, is well set up and well stylized. The huevos rancheros were absolutely delicious and with a coffee, it was a perfect breakfast. I can tell everything there is deeeeliiiish!
google avatar

Melissa P.

Yelp
Delicious we had coffee de Jolla an empanada de crema y guayaba, we devoured that so no pic available. Then chilaquiles rojo were delicious I would have love some fresh avocado and OM eggs but it was delicious! Customer service was excellent great experience! We will be back and this time the hubs and I will not share lol! Also I recommend adding a protein it all just looked so good!!
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Delicious food, friendly staff, and a great place for a casual brunch! The owner and barista were both super kind and helpful, explaining their menu and providing recommendations on what to order. For drinks we ordered the Mayan Mocha and Horchata latte. Both were delicious -- not too sweet yet still very flavorful. To eat, we ordered the current special which was a Torta Ahogada. This was HUGE and easily fed the two of us. The ingredients tasted fresh and the food came out hot, straight from the kitchen. We also had an empanada which was delicious. However, I would probably skip the other pastries next time. Overall, for the service and quality of food, I was really impressed! I would definitely come here again to try other menu items and get a filling breakfast. Support local and try this place out :)
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
Great food great service! Special chiliquiles were outstanding. Definitely have to try the orchata espresso!
google avatar

Cheryl R.

Yelp
The restaurant was packed on a Saturday morning. We ordered from the counter but felt rushed with the line. Ambience was cozy and warm. We chose outdoor dining that was pleasant. My chilaquiles were fresh and crunchy and eggs were delicious. It did seem a bit dry and could've used more green sauce. My husband did not care for the pancakes, although the fruit was fresh. There didn't appear to be many "breakfasty" dishes to choose from. Cappuccino was delicious.
google avatar

Sara C.

Yelp
Delicious latte, horchata, and chilaquiles. Staff was friendly and attentive, we loved it and will be back!

Hailey F.

Yelp
Horrible place! Very overly priced ! And they have this salsa that they put on the side that is extreme spicy .. it looked like salad dressing and it burned my stomach to the point that I couldn't even eat my food because I'm so sick now... I will never come here again.. I don't understand why people speak so highly of this place..
