Celebrated Santa Barbara Restaurant Corazón Cocina Opens in Ventura | Eater LA

"Opened the same week along a popular strip in Downtown Ventura as a full-service restaurant and marks the mini-chain’s first location with a full bar. The bar features small-batch mezcal for traditional margaritas or a flight to sip; all beers are Mexican and wines hail from Baja Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe. New menu additions at this location include a ribeye chicharron with mozzarella, chorizo, pasilla, and flour tortillas, as well as a tuna tartare with avocado, burnt habanero, and a crema serrano ponzu. Velázquez says timing was key for the Ventura and Carpinteria openings—the building’s landlord brought the opportunity, bringing his total number of restaurants up to five. “My goal has never been to open a chain of restaurants and make money. Our main objective and goal is to produce great food at a good price. We are driven by farmers’ markets, local fish, and great corn from Mexico.” Hours are Sunday–Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday." - Mona Holmes

This place just opened so I know they’re still getting in the groove of things. I thought the food was super tasty. They were out of a few things so I couldn’t try the sweet potato taco, but the chicken mole one was so good. Chips were super good, guac was good, & the margs were pretty decent. Service was slow but again, I know they just opened. I would recommend and I would come back!

New favorite spot! Incredible food - quality, flavor, and presentation. I had the Coliflor and Ensenada tacos and they were so delicious. The cauliflower and the fish in each taco were both perfectly fried and accompanied by great flavors and textures with their toppings. We also enjoyed the guacamole and salsas - yum! We waited about 35 minutes for a table, which was the estimated wait time by the hostess. Not bad for a Saturday night at peak dinner time. It was definitely busy in the restaurant but the staff were on it and the food came out pretty quick. Can’t wait to come back and try more.

We were seated immediately and told that our server would be by to take our drink order. More than 10 minutes had passed and we were talking about leaving when our server came up, semi apologetic about the delay. He had already served others who had been seated after us. I think there was some poor communication of which server was assigned to our table or from the host to the server that we were waiting for. Fortunately, what saved the experience is the food was delicious and the server was being very nice after that point. To drink, I ordered the Aztec Old Fashioned which was very smooth and noticeably high quality. We started with the guacamole, which was served with house made chips and salsa. The guac was delicious, seasoned well and a touch of heat. The chips were perfect, not the flimsy type - nice hearty chips crisp and not over fried. The salsas, green and red, both were amazing and flavorful. The Ensenada fish taco was fresh and tasted good. Nothing wow'd me about this one, but it was good. The Norteño steak taco was excellent! This was the highlight of the meal. The steak was perfectly tender, seasoned well and accompanied by some beans and guacamole. The Chicana shrimp quesadilla was nice, but nothing special. For what this was, I probably wouldn't order this one again. Nothing bad to say about it, but nothing really makes me want to have it again. Despite a very rocky start to the point where we almost left the restaurant, I'm glad we got to experience the food and pretty good service after that point.

Google
The food was mostly good. I got the fish taco and aguachile which was very delicious and flavorful. The aguachile had potato tacquitos in it, that was very different. I am not mad about it, I think it could do without and more aguachile and chips would have been better. The drinks were phenomenal. I got a Paloma and regretted not doing the double, my husband got an a unique old fashion which was so delicious. My husband got a steak taco. He was not the biggest fan and left part of it. Overall I would go back for the food and drinks

Google
My wife and I went with friends during their “soft opening”. In terms of service, we went in with low expectations as we assumed they would still be ironing out kinks. But we were pleasantly surprised with exceptional service. The food was terrific too. Flavor and presentation did not disappoint! The best part of all was the atmosphere. We asked to be seated in the back courtyard, and the vibes were A+. If you drink alcohol, order the passionfruit La Guerita. Delicious!

My wife and I just went to Corazon Cocina fir dinner. Delicious food and a wonderful server. Mariana was knowledgeable, friendly and so sweet to talk to. I highly recommend a visit to this restaurant for both lunch or dinner.

This turned out to be the best place for lunch during our week long trip in the Santa Barbara region.

Yelp
We are getting pretty spoiled in the 805 with all of Chef Ramon's restaurants popping up from Ventura to Santa Barbara. :) On a weeknight this spot was PACKED. So happy to see another restaurant on Main St. thriving and bringing in the crowds. The community and locals have begged for Main Street to return to its glory days with busier foot traffic and support to local businesses, it's amazing to see how the community shows up for some good food and one another. On the night I came they were sold out of some Items so I went with some dishes I've already had at his other restaurants and that I knew I would like. Happy to report that they did have their famous octopus & shrimp tacos which hit the spot as always. The octopus at Corazon Cocina is always super tender and flavorful. If you like octopus this is a great appetizer or main. The tacos come just one to an order but they are big and jam packed - so one always works for me. The star of the night actually were the cocktails. I went with a classic strawberry margarita. It was a no frills margarita but it was done well. On the sweet side which is always my preference when ordering a fruit forward drink. I'd get this again for sure. My friend ordered the La Guerita which featured passionfruit and lime. She let me try it and I absolutely loved this cocktail and was grateful she gave me a sip. I'm coming back for this drink again and I'd highly recommend it if you are looking for something a little more unique but still refreshing and fruit forward. Service was nice and friendly despite them being super busy. They also were patient with us as we yapped and were the last table to leave. I'll definitely be back as there are some more dishes I want to try but for now the classics were great and the cocktails perfectly balanced.

Yelp
Went for a ladies night out to celebrate a friend's birthday. We had hits and misses... currently they do not accept reservations. When we arrived there was a little bit of a wait, about 5-10 minutes. The decor is simple, chic and has an open air al fresco ambiance. I mentioned it was one of the gal's birthdays, but there wasn't any acknowledgment at all, was kind of bummed they don't do anything. We ordered quite a variety of food. The margaritas were good, but didn't have tajin to run the glass. The lemon ginger agua fresca was delicious and should be used to make an alcoholic drink! (Not sure if it's already on the menu?) The sweet plantains and side of beans and rice were perfection. They were sold out of the sweet potato taco, which was disappointing. The cauliflower taco was very tasty and had a nice crisp breading. The flavors were a great balance of sweet and savory. The ceviches felt like misses. We ordered the Sal de Mar ceviche and aguachile ceviche. The watermelon in the Sal de Mar felt oversized and seemed more like a salad not really intended to pile on a tostada and eat. The flavors all seemed to work together, so at least it tasted good. My friend ordered the Aguachile ceviche and hadn't read on the menu it was served on top of taquitos. The header seemed a little mis-leading when you think of traditional taquitos. Overall, we enjoyed trying the newer restaurant. We were in good company, but there are a lot of Mexican restaurants that compete and are seem to be a little better value in my humble opinion.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night with my husband and toddler and we were sat on the back patio which had ample room to fit our stroller and wild 2 year old lol. The inside ambiance is so elevated and costal and hope to sit inside when we can get out for a date night because it seems dreamy! We ordered the Kids Chicken Quesadilla, Large Classic Marg, the El Cali Burrito & the Sal de Mar Ceviche. No chips and salsa were offered but didn't necessarily see any other tables have them with so it's probably not a thing here! Kids meal options were great, my 2 year old devoured his chicken quesadilla and rice. 10/10 OMG the Sal De Mar Ceviche?! For sure the favorite of the night for me, so fresh, tangy, spicy and so unique with the chunks of watermelon & pomegranate seeds. Will be back just for that. 10/10. The El Cali Burrito was good, with steak & French fries inside but was almost lacking flavor after eating the ceviche? 7.5/10. Overall great experience, accommodating to families with kids and great service. Excited to come back and try more!

Yelp
Corazon Cocina's 5th restaurant is a welcome addition to VTA food scene! First Bib gourmand winning restaurant by this group was Corazon Cocina & Taproom at The Project in Santa Barbara and it is still my favorite- unfortunately Covid forced its closure. I loved the vibe, the food and I can't help but compare all of the follow-on restaurants to the Original. VTA ambiance is intentionally minimalist warmed up with greenery and wood elements. It features both indoor and outdoor tables. Our server was very friendly and the food came out quickly. Food -Guacamole with chips is accompanied by both salsas and is an excellent start to the meal. The Norteno tacos are delicious. Once you fold over the crispy fried flour tortilla, you taste all the elements in every bite; steak is tender and the beans, cheese, salsas & guac are good combo of flavors. I'm happy to have a C.C. location nearby but I honestly prefer the menu selection at the Public Market in SB. The taco/burrito options with dreamy birria and quesa-birria offerings served up with a margarita are the flavor-bombs that make me happiest but I still have to give the new VTA a 5 star for what we ordered and for ambiance. Would I go back? I'll drive to SB to get the food I crave but I'd still recommend VTA for an elevated date night experience.

Yelp
This Wednesday noon, my wife felt better after recovering from her medical treatment. I asked her if she wanted to make a road trip to try a New Mexican restaurant that just opened. We drove 2 hours to Ventura to taste tacos at Corazon Cocina. We ordered all their tacos. Unfortunately, they ran out of their sweet potato taco. My wife had the Tia Juana that features octopus and white shrimp and the Norteno that had skirt steak. I had the Coliflor, a tempura cauliflower taco, Ensenada, a crispy beer battered Ling cod fish taco and the mole taco the featured chicken mole. This is my new favorite Mexican restaurant for tacos. I enjoyed all my tacos. Ranking them: 1. Mole taco. 2. Ensenada taco. 3. Colifor taco. I ordered the sauce on the side to sample. I love their Almomd Arbol Salsa. It had that smoke flavor to it. I spread it generously on all the cauliflower. My wife enjoyed both tacos. Her favorite was the Norteno. There's inside seating and outside covered seating in front of the restaurant. The restaurant has a nice airy atmosphere. DJ's rating: 4.55/5.00 Would we come back? Definitely Yes!

Yelp
All the food here is homemade! The guacamole is amazing and they have vegan tacos. My cauliflower tacos were great! My friends loved the steak, chicken and seafood tacos too. Everyone loved their food. Our server was very nice. The restaurant is conveniently located in the heart of Main Street and has a lovely old Spanish style décor. My only complaint is that they do not have ice tea or coffee but otherwise this place is excellent. Added bonus they were able to do separate checks for our large party. Dog lovers can also use the beautiful patio in the back.

Yelp
Corazon Cocina Ventura grand opening today. I ordered the mole taco, Ensenada (fish taco) and the passionfruit margarita. The mole taco was flavorful and stuffed I almost needed two shells to hold it all in, which isn't a bad thing at all. The fish taco was seasoned perfectly. And the passionfruit margarita with Mezcal was the perfect t balance of flavors, and not to sweet. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and they have a courtyard in the back

Yelp
So excited to have Corazón Cocina here in Ventura. I stumbled upon the SB location years ago and have been a fan since the beginning! The owners put in a lot of work to update the spot and make it better than it looked before! I like how they are making use of the outdoor patio now- tucked away and private for a great bite with friends! As for the food, 10/10 as always. I ordered the Sal de Mar ceviche and it was so refreshing and fresh. I believe it was made with yellowtail that day, my favorite! We also tried the Corazón salad and their fried plantains and black beans- both delicious. My friends ordered the sweet potato taco and the Norteño and said they were both really good. Can't wait to go back again.

Yelp
This place is so bright and welcoming! It catches your eye immediately when you're walking by. We were there around 1pm on a Wednesday for lunch. It wasn't busy, but the front patio was full so we sat inside. Order at the counter style. I got a chicken mole taco and the norteño (steak) taco. They were very big tacos and packed to the brim which I appreciated! The mole taco was probably my favorite of the 2. The steak in the norteño was so tender and well cooked, just a little bland as was the taco itself. It needed some kick to it in my opinion. I would request salsa or something to add to it. All together I enjoyed the experience and would love to come back and try some of their alcoholic beverages! Beautiful place to enjoy a meal!

Yelp
Welcome to Ventura, Corazon! I was thrilled to see the grand opening happening on my bday so of course I had to celebrate with my favorite tacos. This location is STUNNING! The tree in the center, the walls, the light fixtures, greenery; such a vibe! The food of course is the star of the show. The taco norteño is a must EVERY TIME! I tried the doraditos and that amazing crunch with the juicy chicken and fixings is a must for me from now on. The Ensenada taco was fresh and well cooked and the chicken mole is my husband's favorite. We got a side of rice and beans for our son and the portion is very generous. I've said it before and I'll say it again; you know the food is good when their rice and beans are good. You honestly can't go wrong with anything on their menu! And of course the celebration isn't complete without an adult beverage. We got the strawberry fields margarita and the Aztec old fashion. Both really good! Staff was hard at work and very friendly. Noah was sweet to check in on us and even made sure our son didn't lose a toy. See y'all again soon!

Yelp
My friends and I went to try this place the other night. We tried a few of their tacos, ceviche, and the doraditos. Everything was super tasty. We were seated outside and the atmosphere was great. Our server was very friendly and helpful. Overall, we had a great time!
google avatar

Kaylin K.

Yelp
We went for an early dinner with friends and our two babies and had a great time. Service was fast, friendly, and we loved being able to place our order from the table this time. The ambiance was just as charming as before, and the food was excellent as always. My only note is that having just one high chair isn't ideal -- I'd recommend at least two, as there were at least four other families during our visit who also needed a booster seat or high chair. Overall, still a wonderful dinner and we enjoyed everything.
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
Their orange flan is quite possibly the best flan I've ever had. The other food is good but please do yourself a favor and get the flan. Anyways now that we've gotten that out of the way, the service was great and the interior is beautiful. If you're gonna get a taco just know that they're pretty large and loaded. I had to use a fork to eat some of the toppings off of the taco before I could fold it. Normally I can eat three tacos but I could hardly finish two tacos from here. Also they have this ginger lemon aqua fresca which is really unique but if you like ginger it is definitely worth the try! Definitely coming back another time to try their other items.
google avatar

Ray N.

Yelp
The food here is bonkers. I had a transcendent seafood taco: octopus and shrimp with a roasted pasilla pepper on an immaculate blue masa corn tortilla. The seafood was high quality, expertly cooked, and the sauce was hugely complementary. I also got a fried fish taco that was very good, a tuna tostada that was very flavorful, and a huge salad that showcased many fresh and tasty ingredients (jicama, watermelon, pomegranate seeds, baby kale, and pepitas). But the seafood taco was the standout: truly out of this world.

Yelp
All around great experience, staff was super friendly and welcoming, and the food was excellent! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
We absolutely loved the atmosphere and vibe of this place! We arrived early, and by the time we left, it was packed--and for good reason. We started with two orders of the guacamole, which was incredibly fresh and flavorful, paired with crisp, house-made chips and perfectly crafted margaritas--big and bold with just the right kick. Let's just say we had a happy little buzz going when the food arrived! The menu is small for now as they test out what their customers enjoy, but what they offer is packed with flavor. I had the Chicana taco--rich, savory, and seasoned to perfection with a delicious sauce that brought it all together. Our waitress was a gem--warm, attentive, and so knowledgeable. Her bright smile and great service made the evening even better. All in all, a fantastic experience. Highly recommend checking this place out!

Yelp
We were in town shopping this past Sunday and hungry for lunch so we just popped in this cool looking spot on a whim. We didn't even know it was a soft opening. My husband had one of the ceviches and I had the chicken taquitos. Delicious. We also had an old fashioned and a Paloma margarita. Everything was great and sweet service. Our cocktails took a little time but we were fine and as we know now-it's a new place so give grace.
google avatar

Benjamin D.

Yelp
Food was excellent, we ordered three diff tacos plates, salad, guacamole, side of plantains and beans with tortillas on the side. The norteño taco + cauliflower were solid. Understandably, the service is working out the kinks - restaurant opened only last week. We'll try again in about 1.5 - 2 months. Suggestion to management: cancel the "counter orders" and just have a full wait staff with table-side service. They have Cazcanes and Fortaleza tequila, just wish the margarita was made with more care (for some reason they served in a massive glass and the ratios were off). Overall, food was great and we'll try again soon.
google avatar

Charlie R.

Yelp
Place is far too expensive for average Venturans. Also they treat their staff like sh*t, only giving them 20% off and not letting them try the menu. How is the staff supposed go be able to recommend menu items without having tried the menu?! They tried to make my close friend who works there pay for food that they were throwing away. This place doesn't belong and doesn't deserve to be in Ventura. Full of Montecito heads.

Jasmine R.

Yelp
The food was mid at best. Everyone says they like the Norteno taco but it was a few cubes of steak and wayy too many beans, not what I was expecting, it tasted good but not $10 good for one taco. The tortilla also was oily and soggy. The Ensenada was also mid there are better fish tacos around Ventura. Also there was no service you had to order at the front. For the price and ambiance I expected some kind of service. Ambiance was nice. I would say if you are rich then go for it :)

Margie H.

Yelp
Came here with my friend for dinner we tried the Sal de Mar plate and it was delicious! Had the mezcal on the drinks and it was definitely a twist. The staff were very friendly and attentive, the manager was very sweet and she ever offered us to try the mole taco which was flavorful. Loved it ! Definitely Recommend it!

Ana P.

Yelp
We took the train from LA to Ventura and explored the mission area and found this gem called Corazón Cocina. We had a variety of their plates like the plátanos, the mole taco, doraditos, and the toco norteño. And the service was fabulous. Highly recommend this place when your in Ventura!
google avatar

Alex Z.

Yelp
Wow!! We were completely blown away by our experience last night at Corazon. Everything from the service to the cocktails, the food and the ambiance was outstanding. Can't wait to come back and make this a regular spot of ours.
google avatar

Jeff Z.

Yelp
So... they've been at this location for 4 weeks and have no formal table waitlist in place. Not even yelp! It's so easy I just don't understand why the hostees writes down your phone number, doesn't tell you to expect an outside area code phone number, not a simple text! We were quoted a 30 min wait and didn't get "the call" until 60 mins later. It's not hard to figure out your table turn rate. Get it together people
google avatar

Evan W.

Yelp
Sooooo expensive. And soooo bland. And the menu is pretty limited. Having to remember your table before you go order is also strange. Almost got up and went to Mother's Tacos before we ordered, really wish I had either done that or had gone next door to Pinyon. I shant be back.
google avatar

Amanda H.

Yelp
Great, but these tacos are HUGE! Just a heads up! I got the mole taco and it was pretty good, but very dense. They felt more like tiny burritos than tacos to me. Definitely get your money's worth, but with chips and salsa to start, I was good with one taco. The ginger agua Fresca was really good, and service was pretty fast despite being packed. Around 6 on a Friday, we waited probably 30 minutes for a table for 2.

Liz M.

Yelp
This is my second visit. I came back for these tacos!! Yummm! The mole tacos are delicious and packed with chicken! The chia ginger agua Fresca was refreshing. Also, the green salsa is so tasty! The staff is friendly and the place is so cute!! I will definitely be back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a new spot in Ventura. The food was delicious. Super fresh and different from your typical Mexican food restaurant. I'm amazed at how well they're doing especially since they are brand new. We will be back.
google avatar

Ariella S.

Yelp
Stopped by on the 4th for some tacos to go and they were so tasty! Very excited to go back for a sit down meal.

Jerry S.

Yelp
Food was great. Service just so-so. Had to ask for additional chips twice and still never got them. We also got seated in the darkest hole on their front patio ... could barely read the menu or see our food. Lighting (or lack of it) is important. We'll go back again (the mole taco was so good!) but maybe ask to be seated inside, or on the back patio.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
What a great addition to downtown ventura. We have gone 4 times every time has been a delightful experience staff and food are amazing the drinks are exceptional. I will return as well as recommended. Thanks for the hard work

Paul K.

Yelp
Best Saturday seat in Ventura. Had the Aztec Old Fashion in the alley. Waiting for the fine dining.

J C.

Yelp
Food is good. One taco might be enough . You order at a counter so make sure you know your table number. Cute for a date night

V T.

Yelp
Went to this restaurant last week with family. I loved the food, and the environment was pleasant, and wait staff very attentive. I tried various foods including their guacamole and chips and salsa and queso fundido. My favorite was the Chicano taco shrimp quesadilla. The drinks were ok I ordered a passion fruit margarita. Overall I enjoyed the experience and would definitely go back. The price was a little high but these days which place isn't. I liked the food because it was not your typical Mexican restaurant it had a Cuban or Brazilian flare.

Izzy A.

Yelp
Food and drinks were delicious. We went for soft opening so I think that's why the service was lacking a bit but staff was very nice. Nice place, delicious flavors. The only thing is that it's overpriced for what you get which is tacos, quesadillas, tostadas etc., and some of the cocktails were pricey too.

Shannon O.

Yelp
Service was bad. Not enough waiters. Lots of food runners. Took awhile to order. Got our drinks after our long wait for food. Waitress never came back and asked if we needed anything else. Mole taco's had too much rice in it. Who puts rice in a taco?

Amanda R.

Yelp
The food is excellent. We tried a bunch of food and there were no complaints across our whole table. Staff is so sweet as swell. 10/10 would recommend

Bret B.

Yelp
Had great experience at Corazone! Very cool location with beautiful seating and A+ food! The staff were welcoming and friendly too :)

G C.

Yelp
Overall we loved/liked the food. Staff was really friendly, although for the price you would think that they would have actual waiters. The menu seemed confusing, I think it would better revised as small plate/ tapas and sharing items. I ordered the tuna tostada, which I thought was an entree. It was brought out first. ( Even before our delicious margaritas). visually it was not what I was expecting at all. The flavors were excellent though. But not filling whatsoever. This should have been listed as an appetizer with (2) small tostadas. Chips And salsa were great and fresh. My sister order 2 fish tacos, which she gave me one, because of the weird timing of the tostada. We both agreed that the tacos were bland, and fried fish on the soggy side. They came with a nice little pile of fresh veg on top, but I was surprised that there was no little extra side of salsa for people who like more flavor. We also shared beans& plantains, also needed extra flavor/salsa, but pretty tasty once we added the salsa from our order of chips and salsa to it. We also shared a cauliflower taco, which tasted about the same as the fish taco, still on the bland side. Crispness was better than the fish though. Concerning was that some of the sprouts topping the this taco were definitely brown and going bad, which can make people sick. So maybe some work on quality control. We did like the food, and this place definitely has a lot of potential. But I def suggest a revision of the menu, just so it's clearer. Also, it was a really nice ambience.

K P.

Yelp
Delicious fresh tacos with artsy presentation. Good portions. Quiet setting. Will definitely become a regular!

Paul M.

Yelp
Ok so I've been waiting for this place to get here! I'm from Oxnard but would jump in the car and drive to the Santa Barbara public market to eat at this place and drive back! What??? They did not let us down. They did open with a partial menu but everything we had was amazing! My wife got the Lingcod fish tacos and loved them per usual. I had the steak tacos and a cauliflower tempura taco and it was . Don't forget their green salsa. Just the right price! Everyone in the place seemed super happy with their food! Ventura embrace this place! Hopefully they can survive Main Street still being shut down! Staff is friendly and the place has a great vibe. Good drinks also!

Yelp
The food is amazing. The ceviche was perfectly fresh, where the combination of tuna, watermelon, avocado slices and hint of chili added up to a dish with a sparkling taste. The Tia Juana taco had a flavor like no other tacos I have eaten. It was a real surprise to my palate. The guacamole was also delicious, but not as unique or surprising like our other dishes, however the green and red salsas served with it were both unusual and added depth to the overall flavor. While the service may have seemed a bit slow, in a restaurant focused on bringing a quality experience in eating, I can appreciate that careful attention was being paid to preparation and presentation - wherein the dishes also announce that visual detail is also important. The setting is bright and gives off a countryside vibe. My one negative reaction is that for food so good and well presented, I had to place my order at a counter and pay in advance, like a fast food place , including a tip for service we had not yet received. Mind you, the service, when food arrived, was exemplary. Best of luck.
