How to Spend a 24-Hour Staycation in Santa Barbara | Eater LA

"Located on the quieter end of State Street and run by mother-and-son owners Imelda Saldicar Hernandez and Ramon Velazquez, Corazón Comedor is bright and inviting; everything is handmade, from the house-special mole and salsas to tacos, comforting guisados, and pozole, and I especially recommend the wonderful chicken enchiladas mole — it’s the kind of place where you share every plate." - Mona Holmes

Google
My new favorite place in SB! Amazing authentic beautifully prepared Mexican food. These are some of the best tacos I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is gorgeous yet not pretentious. They say you can judge a restaurant by its bathroom and their bathroom is immaculate! I saw some of the breakfast plates and they looked delish too. I heart Corazon Comedor :)

McKensie M.

Google
I really enjoyed this place! You can instantly tell they use fresh ingredients because every dish looked so colorful and thoughtfully put together. Everything tasted amazing, and you can feel the care that goes into their food. It ended up being one of my favorite spots I tried in Santa Barbara. Definitely worth a visit!

Google
Fast service. Food was good. Coffee drinks were very pretty but not very warm. The mole was a bit sweet. Got there early before a big rush so it is a popular place.

Google
I was craving Mexican food so badly 🌮🔥 and I’m SO happy this place did not disappoint! 😍👏 I got a mixed plate so I could try a little bit of everything—and it was all so good 🤤💯. The mole had just a tiny kick 🌶️, the beans were perfect 🫘, and the avocado was exactly how I like it—not too many onions, just right and nice and limey 🥑🍋. The meat was super tender, and the flavors and sauces brought everything together beautifully 🍖🌮💥. Absolutely hit the spot. Can’t wait to come back! 🙌🇲🇽

Google
The atmosphere and music was perfect. We ordered Breakfast taco, made with homemade blue corn tortillas, scrambled eggs, and my favorite nopales plus the machaca which was delicious. Sorry didnt take a picture but i did of the Flan. Highly recommend this place.

Google
Really friendly and helpful staff and wonderfully fresh and flavorful foods. Obviously we had to get the mole, and it did not disappoint. Even the kids burrito was made with care and quality.

Google
I went to have dinner here to celebrate a graduation. We had a reservation for later but they took us early. The atmosphere is very relaxing and inviting. We started with some guacamole and their complimentary chips that were accompanied by a flight of assorted delicious salsas. Our entrees were all very delicious and were served promptly. The staff really topped off the evening by being friendly and helpful. The next time I am in Santa Barbara I will be returning to dine here again.

Google
Food was absolutely delicious and authentically adjacent—meaning it has a more modern take on traditional Mexican food, but remains very authentic in flavor and taste. The venue definitely has the Spanish vibe down, with a beautifully designed interior featuring table-and-booth hybrid seating by a tall windowpane, creating a cozy nook-type area. I was seated here with a menu and informed that ordering is counter service, making it a bit more casual, though staff still brings the food to your seating of choice. Loved the use of Lotería cards for order identification—such a lovely touch and a great detail that added to the overall experience. They also have tables for larger groups and a flat screen playing classic ’50s-style Latino novelas. The venue wasn’t initially packed when I arrived, but it quickly picked up with incoming foot traffic. I ordered the burrito, which was mouthwateringly delicious: beans, rice (added in), strip steak, crema, guac, cheese, green sauce, and no pico (a personal preference I omitted, though it is included), all wrapped in a soft tortilla with just a slight crisp. Washed it down with the almond horchata—OMG. Such a unique and flavorful take on the classic agua fresca. Absolutely loved it. My only slight issue was the wait time to order. A couple groups ahead of me had quite a few questions about the menu, which held up the line for a while. There’s only one counter for ordering, so come with patience. That said, everyone was friendly, the staff apologized for the wait, and the service was still amazing. Side note: the bathroom was super adorable—its own little vibe. I have a thing for cute bathrooms and love when venues take the time to ensure the full experience is delivered. Thank you for the great experience. 🙂

Yelp
Amazing food in a fresh and spacious space, my wife and I came here before a show. Ordering is at the counter, take a number, they bring it to you. Space is large, industrial concrete and steel with high ceilings, but somehow warm and cozy at the same time. They have a many creative tacos, flautas, enchiladas and mole dishes that appear more "authentic" and not your everyday Mexican, as well as beer and cocktails. We ordered a bowl of guacamole, chicken mole enchiladas, enchiladas rancheras, sparkling water and a margarita, then sat down with our number. The guacamole and particularly the chips were incredible, tasting hot and freshly made, but in a smallish bowl. Margarita was very good too. Both our main dishes presented well, were loaded with flavor and top notch, with the mole being spot-on sweet and spicy with very nicely prepared beans and rice sides. To finish the guacamole, additional chips at $4 were needed. Counter service and food delivery times was good. This is probably the best Mexican food I've had in Santa Barbara, a big statement! My only (1/2 star) nit is for the price and quality of food and cocktail offerings, I feel the restaurant (and me) deserve more a finer dining, full table service experience.

Yelp
I went for dinner, but I think this place is more popular during breakfast and lunch hours. You order at the counter then take a seat. Salsa bar located on the side. The burrito had a lot of flavor but the tortilla was kinda hard and made it difficult to cut with the knife. Overall the staff is friendly and it's not a bad spot to sit down and grab a quick bite to eat.

Yelp
It took me a few days to post because I've been phoneless. This place is a bit pricy but then again, I don't eat out much because I get authenticity at home. And really, I prefer taquerias. Ambience was amazing. I loved all the paintings, although can do without some St. Francis de Assisi and more Virgencita. I did appreciate the Frida Kahlo and Cantinflas but it was in a dark hallway on the way to the bathroom. I loved the light fixtures with the strung pom poms. Rate an 8. Customer service is spot on, a 9.5. My service animal helps me walk, and I tremble. If I had to get my own water, chile, etc, it would have ended up on the floor, spilled ingredients and shattered glass. The young man who helped me was very courteous, his mama would have been proud of him. I was also very happy because I did not get harassed for my dog, believe me I get side looks at other restaurants. Who made it better? I rate a dish compared to my family, a really high standard. I ordered pozole for a few reasons. I measure great mexican food based on my favorite dishes, I was craving it and could not wait for my momma to cook it, and my neighbor, who is also Mexican, gave me the green light. I give their pozole an overall 7, for several reasons. The flavor was spot on but the texture of the meat was missing something, the chile made it better. Unhappy, because it came with a 1 (one) fried, oily tostada, they were NOT generous with the cabbage, radishes, or lime. I asked for more and could have had 2 more servings of cabbage & radishes. I could do without the avocado because mountains of cabbage, radishes, tostadas, lemon, and chile make this dish. The agua de jamaica was amazing. Next time, I'll order a chile relleno taco and margarita.

Yelp
The ambiance, the food and the service is all great here. If you want to see how classy Spain/mexico is like including the service and most importantly the food then this spot is it.
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
Came here on New Year's Day around noon and had super fast service, but most importantly delicious tacos and the enchiladas verdes. Oh and the horchata was PERFECT- even though it's almond based you can't tell, and no grit at the bottom of the glass.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved the ambience and the food. We got the: Vegetarian enchilada with mole - 4/5 - I really liked the stuffing (spinach and mushroom). The mole was a little bitter but the flavor grew on me. Rajas Tacos - 5/5 - absolutely loved the flavors and the cheese. Chips with beans and mole - complimentary, served with 4 salsas of different spice levels. The spiciest - with habanero and cheese was the best! Quick service, friendly staff and great decor. Parking in lots nearby - first 75 min free

Yelp
This place was great, it would've received a 5 start rating but the wait was very long to get a table. Overall I would give this place a 4.5 the food was very delicious. Especially the chilaquiles with carne asada. The meat wasn't chewy and it was seasoned so good! Probably the best chilaquiles I've had. Definitely will come back when I go to Santa Bárbara again. The horchata was also good, definitely recommend. Very nice and clean restaurant.

Jocelin C.

Yelp
Honestly, didn't really give me authentic Mexican food, which I should've known. Staff was really nice. As a first time coming to Santa Barbara this was a place that a lot of people recommend and if I'm being honest, I would suggest it but not recommend it. There's honestly way better good places.
google avatar

Alexandra B.

Yelp
Great spot up in Santa Barbara, I have been numerous times and I often recommend it to friends and family. My number one order is always the Flautas Sautarios (short rib flautas) and I'll usually get some guacamole and rice or beans to go with them. They are so flavorful and tender on the inside and nice and crispy on the outside, you really can't go wrong! If you have a sweet tooth I would also recommend finishing your meal with the Strawberry Tres Leches or the Dulce de Leche Flan, which I took with me to-go on this occasion. The staff is always friendly and the food comes out of the kitchen at a great pace whether you're dining in or placing an order to go. The interior is airy with high ceilings and well lit, with nice big windows. There is plenty of seating inside with two different rooms to accommodate plenty of diners, and a small bar as well. There aren't currently any outdoor seating options, and parking options can be tricky, but I wouldn't let that deter you from giving this restaurant a try!

Yelp
First time here. The beans and hot sauces were great which is a sign that all is going to be well and it was. Friendly chill service with a pleasant atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoyed my birria burrito. Thank you for bringing this delicious restaurant to Santa Barbara.
google avatar

Yelp
Walked in this am just before 11. They sat my party of 10 pretty quick. This was our first time in and it won't be our last. Only negative thing was that once sat no one came by for our drink order for quite sometime. The food was outstanding. Some reviews mentioned that the berry French toast was soggy which it can be because it's served with ice cream. It was sweet and really good. My vegetable omelet was filled with mushrooms, onions, and spinach. I added their green salsa. The decor is lovely, nice staff, and delicious food. I look forward to returning next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Corazon Comedor is another great restaurant chef Ramon has blessed us with. Nevermind the fact that he won the Michelin Bib Gourmand award! All the more reason to come here. If you're looking for a restaurant that is spacious, inviting and family friendly; then come here. They also offer takeout and online ordering. It tends to be busier on the weekends, so just be aware of that. On my recent visit, I tried the pozole. It was perfectly made and full of delicious flavors. Also served with all the toppings that go along with this comforting soup. I love pozole and this one did not disappoint! The small size was more than enough and I even had leftovers to take home. I also ordered the Mercadito de Champinones aka fried mushroom quesadilla. It was cheesy good. Also, The guac was fresh and perfectly seasoned. Well worth the splurge! My son tried the enchiladas todos santos; which is stuffed with poached shrimp, cheese and topped with a creamy poblano sauce. He thoroughly enjoyed. I've also tried their special of the day. A chile relleno Birria burrito, which was mind blowing delicious! I hope they bring this back. Overall, anything chef Ramon creates is going to be successful. I've been a long time supporter since the pop-up days and I will continue to support whenever I can.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is delicious. My first time here the service was fast. It was early in the morning. I might've been the first customer very nice and clean open kitchen. You can see them preparing your food. I had a churro latte and a chicken tamale with green sauce.
google avatar

Yelp
First time we when to Corazon Comedor and were expecting the good quality food they are well known for at their other restaurants. The special Halibut dish was so so, the Risotto small and lacked much favor. We should have sat on the patio but we're inside and seemed to be ignored, no water refill, slow service.
google avatar

Yelp
My husband, son and I went in on a Tuesday. We usually do the taco Tuesday thing but we thought let's do something different! And so glad we did! It was incredibly delicious! Look at the pics. It tastes just as good as it looks! Or better Our waiter was warm, helpful with the menu choices, and attentive.

Yelp
We were a family of four (two kids, 13 and 10) dining for a late lunch. When we walked in there wasn't a wait and were seated immediately. However, the hostess wasn't too friendly. The server Alejandro was very friendly and accommodating. I ordered pozole and ended up sharing with my kids. He offered to bring some extra bowls. The small was rather a pretty large bowl. It was the perfect amount of flavor and spice. My son's burrito was perfect for him. Good amount for a child's meal. The only thing we were disappointed with was the chicken quesadilla. It was on a blue taco tortilla. For the price it was very small, no sides included, hardly a meal. The description didn't mention anything about the nopales on it, but it came out with that and my husband had to ick it off. He only wanted the meat and cheese. They would have remade it, but we went ahead and kept it. The decor had some great art. It's a smaller restaurant and for sure on a busy night it would be crowded. I would definitely recommend this place for the authentic food, but probably not for people who have a more simple palette.

Yelp
A little food stall at the Public market delivers top notch informal Mexican food. The tortillas, tacos, salsas, taquitos, rice and beans are all delicious! You must not miss this informal but phenomenal spot
google avatar

Yelp
Everything we had was Delicious. Totopos, gorditas de suadero y chicharrón, quesabirria taco y la Jamaica.
google avatar

Andrea A.

Yelp
The best Mexican breakfast I have had in years!!! The arranchera was tender and every single aspect of the dish served its purpose and delivered a great culinary experience. I also loved the ambiance of Corazon Comedor, the Mexican decor and textiles were truly beautiful and made me feel like I'd been transported to México. I highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
This was my friend's and my first time here. We had heard good things and made a reservation for 6:15 on a rainy Tuesday. The place was full and we were seated promptly. The servers were very friendly and checked on us often. The food was impeccable and I highly recommend. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming.
google avatar

Jerry F.

Yelp
An Instagram-worthy brunch spot in downtown Santa Barbara, though I thought the food lacked where the ambience of the restaurant itself impresses. For brunch, I had the matahambre plate with a café de olla. While the coffee was true to itself, the food left much to be desired. I felt the chilaquiles just missed the mark from taking them over-the-top. The meat and potatoes, though, were a perfect compliment and salvaged what remained of the dish. Despite the mixed feelings towards the food, I'd still recommend for anyone looking for great service and picture-worthy food and ambience.
google avatar

Sheryl S.

Yelp
I wish I could give Corazon Comedor a better review but I just can't. I was part of a group of 10 for a bachelorette weekend and the server seemed annoyed with us from the get go. Our entrees also took a very long time to arrive. I was starving and basically inhaled my tacos which we're good, but not the best I've had. But, the cocktails were excellent and the ambiance and decor very cool. This would be a good spot for date night, just wouldn't recommend for a big group based on our experience.
google avatar

AARON Z.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast at around noon on Sunday with a group of 6. I really wanted to like this place and it has a lot of potential, the breakfast just didn't cut it. Started with the mocha latte which was one of the best coffee drinks I ever had. I ordered the breakfast burrito and I would not recommend it. There was way too much cheese and the meat did not have too much flavor. It also barely had any sauce to balance out the burrito. Also service was incredibly slow and we went most of the meal without any water. I even tried to get up to fill the water myself but I was not allowed to. Dinner may be better cause the mole was delicious but just would not recommend for breakfast.
google avatar

Foster O.

Yelp
Good food! Good service!! Room For improvement, prices don't match! At the end of the day cost vs consumer satisfaction!
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
Service seemed a little slow. Maybe because the following. They picked up all our plates after the appetizer and then we had to hold our silverware unless we wanted to put it directly on the table until our food came out - over 10 mins. And we had to ask for more water as well. Overall the food was pretty average. It was fun to get the free chips and 4 different sauces to try. The large soup was really big. But overall, the food was not too special for the price. Make reservations in advance.
google avatar

Vic A.

Yelp
We drive from Altadena to Santa Barbara to have lunch or brunch here. I can honestly type forever but I feel like that says enough. Everything is outstanding and service is warm. The salsas (as should be) are the stars and I am addicted to their traditional black mole. The atmosphere is simple but stylish and very homey. I love this place with all of my heart.

Midory I.

Yelp
Incredible-authentic tasting and friendly. Got the chilaquiles and enfrijoladas and they were incredible. The cafe de olla and oaxacan chocolate was delicious.
google avatar

Calvin N.

Yelp
If you want to level up your Mexican food craving then this is the place to be. High quality and home inspired recipes. This is the place to check out! Our server Ray was outstanding! He suggested the dishes we had for dinner! Thank you Ray!
google avatar

Yelp
Not ready for burrito week. I have been here for 50mins from order to now to get 2 burritos to go. I hope it's good.
google avatar

Yelp
EVERYTHING was AMAZZZZING!! The food had amazing flavor! The variety of salsas from spicy to mild was great! Service, was attentive without feeling rushed. The music playing in the background took me down memory lane; with memories of my dad. Xóchitl had amazing recommendations as a 1st timer/ out of towner! The cafe de olla; delicious!! The best I've EVER had!! Regreso pronto!!! :)

Irma G.

Yelp
The foos was amazing loved it would totally go back! The quesadilla Romana was to die for

Deji O.

Yelp
Had the shrimp enchiladas and they were absolutely perfect. Piquant, well cooked and delicious. One of the better meals I've had.

Eduardo M.

Yelp
Food was a 2/10 Drinks were 1/10 Margarita tastes like a seltzer. Paloma was super weak, very watered down. Don't waste your time eating here with so many other good restaurant around.
google avatar

Kary T.

Yelp
We came on a late Saturday afternoon and were seated immediately. We ordered the Flautas de papa, Tamales de Mama (chicken verde and pork mole), a chicken Milanese torta, and a horchata. The food is made with love, care, and attention and delicious. The horchata was refreshing with a subtle balance of almond flavor. The house special appetizer is a bowl of freshly fried tortilla chips topped with mole, refried beans, and queso fresco; it's such a tasty treat! The salsa flight ranges from mild to habanero: when combined with the food, all the salsas are tolerable, but alone pack a lot of flavor and spice. The kitchen is semi-opened, depending on where you sit. The high ceilings and decor open the space, and is paired with ample seating.

Yelp
This modern Mexican restaurant features "Home Inspired Mexican Cuisine," and when you walk in to their comfy dining spaces you are greeted by their friendly staff, and a neon sign saying "Hechos con Amor." Along with the delicious aromas and the cozy dining area, you can tell that Head Chef/Owner Ramon Velasquez and his staff have put a lot of love into Corazon Comedor. After reviewing their Breakfast Menu on-line, I knew it going to be a tough decision as what to eat first. Our server Madel took very good care of us, and was helpful in describing the assorted dishes. She started us off with some savory Totopos (chips, mole, frijoles de rancho, queso fresco) and an assortment of delicious salsas. Then we dove in to the Matahambre (bistek con papas, chilaquiles verdes, fried eggs, frijoles de rancho, crema, queso fresco, y cilantro) and the Machaca (shredded short rib, eggs with salsa bandera, chilaquiles al gusto, y frijoles de rancho). Very excited to go back to try their Mexican Sandwiches, Quesadillas, Platos Fuertes, y Tacos. So much more to enjoy. Located on Victoria Street between State and Anacapa, and right in-between Wise Guys Barber shop and Ca'Dario.

Yelp
Dropped in for dinner on Saturday night! Made reservations to be sure to get in as space is limited at this restaurant. There are bar seats at the kitchen if tables are not open. The restaurant also has a separate room for parties. The environment is pretty causal. As for the food, the taste was spot on from beginning to end. We choose the guacamole for our appetizer . The guacamole was market price. First for me to see guacamole at market price. Guacamole was fresh but nothing special. We would skip next time. We then had chicken mole enchiladas and tamales. The tamale entree consist of two tamales. They had three different types on the menu. I got the chicken and pork tamales. The tamales were very moist. The sauce was very good on them as well. The enchiladas with mole was also good. For sides we got beans and cabbage salad. Cabbage salad was very good. As a complimentary gesture the restaurant provides chips with mole and beans prior to dinner. For drinks we got margaritas. We order the traditional and hibiscus margarita. Both were good and real in taste. No fake mix here! We really enjoyed our meal and will be back another time.'

Isabell R.

Yelp
I thought it was okay, my rajas tacos were cold. The ambiance was nice. I also thought it was a little pricey.
google avatar

Tupelo W.

Yelp
Excellent! Great food, the free chips and salsa flight are way better than any chips and salsa I have paid for. The habanero aioli was a first and I put some on everything. Ordered the local halibut tacos, very fresh. Mole was great too. Service was friendly.

Yelp
Everything from the Ambiance & Great Reviews. Customer Service A1, the owner coming & checking in @ end. The Amazing Recommendation to come for the food the experience left me wanting to come back 10/10

Yelp
Wow! Just WOW! Another hit restaurant brought to you by the Corazon chain. We tried this on a busy Saturday night. We couldn't get reservations to fit our timeframe but we were able to join their waitlist online before arrival which made sure we got a table for 3 with a very short wait time. The food was delicious! We wanted to share a few things so we got the guacamole, flautas de pollo, and 'Pa Probar with 4 guisados. The guacamole was good but we enjoyed the totopos with beans, mole, and queso much better. Great salsa options too. The beans, I honestly could eat an entire bowl of them. I would go back just for them. They're incredible! The flautas were delicious. And for the guisados, we chose the rajas, carne desherbada, bistek con papas, and pollo con poblano. The rajas and 2 beef options were standouts. We wouldn't get the pollo con poblano again and instead try a different option. It was good but not as memorable as the other 3. Did I mention they come with handmade tortillas? So so good! And in lieu of dessert, we grabbed a cafe de olla and Oaxacan mocha to go. Both were great. The location is small but very cute and nice decorations. Staff was great! Very friendly and attentive. The restaurant is easily accessible with nearby parking on the street or a structure (75min free parking!). Please do yourself a favor and go try this great new addition.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered the huevos rancheros. The sauce was delicious and the tortilla was perfectly fried. The beans were very tasty as well. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
Visited Corazón Comedor during Santa Barbara Independent's Burrito Week . They had a breakfast burrito it was delicious. I was blown away by the friendly service, attention to detail, and presentation. I can't wait to go back and try more items from their menu. The restaurant is located downtown towards the Arlington , quiet location and walking distance from many hotels or parking . The restaurant itself has modern decor and California /Mexican cuisine but at the same time it feels like a home in Latin America. I love it
google avatar

Adriana M.

Yelp
If you're looking for a modernized take on classic Mexican dishes then this is your place. We ordered the Chilaquiles and Huevos Rancheros, the chilaquiles were just fine. If you're interested in two tostadas passed off as huevos rancheros for $22 then be my guest. They unfortunately didn't have the Cafe de la Olla available at the time of visit. The server seemed mildly annoyed, I'm not sure if it was directed towards us or if it was just one of those days for them. Overall hip, trendy, overpriced and inauthentic.
google avatar

Ana Z.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast before visiting the art museum and they didn't disappoint. The food here was phenomenal! I'm not big fan of mole but oh my their mole is delicious! The chips and hot sauces made this whole meal. Plenty of street parking. Service was good when I went. This spot is a gem.

J B.

Yelp
Quite possibly the best breakfast burrito I've ever had. And the fresh salsa bar was to die for. The restaurant is adorable and cozy. Sooo good!
google avatar

Armando G.

Yelp
This place is as authentic as it gets. If you want genuine Mexican cuisine, I invite you to visit this place! I will definitely be coming back. The chicharron is top tier. The sauces are impeccable. I will try the cochinita pibil next time (they didn't have any more during my visit, which is an amazing sign!) Service was excellent and I ordered to-go. The ambiance was beautiful and cozy. I will dine-in next time, stay tuned!

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a very long time now. For some reason, all this time, the menu wasn't clear to me. The prices per entree and the serving size as seen on the photos didn't really match. Regardless, I decided to step in and order takeout. I'm so glad I did. I asked one of the workers for a few of the most popular mains, and they gave me three really good options. I opted for the chicken milanesa. The food was ready in a decent time, about 15 minutes. Before I left the restaurant with my bag, I asked for some salsa, and they graciously provided that. When I got home and opened the container, I was very impressed. The presentation was beautiful and coloforul. The food smelled great and looked appetizing. The chicken was very good and breaded perfectly. The pickled toppings really cut through any grease of the chicken, and it mixed well together. The salsas also paired well with this meal. Every bite of this meal was happiness. There was only a tiny piece that was still pink inside but I set that aside and continued on my journey of flavors. I have already recommended this restart to my friends. The only drawback is the price of the meal being a bit steep for chicken milanesa. Steak milanesa, maybe. The food is prepared deliciously with incredible flavor and color, so it's hard to deny the value.

Yelp
Good food but service needs improvement. Kitchen needs to be faster and you shouldn't have to prepay and tip before your meal comes out. Feel like they didn't earn the 20 percent left. Sides can be larger with entrees. Overall very pricey for what we got. They messed up a side and were slow to replace it. Seems like another table's dish was also made incorrectly as well but they replaced their item faster. I wouldn't recommend sadly since we overpaid for what we received.
