This little spot had some of the most delicious and affordable cooking around, which felt like a homemade meal. I ended up trying their #5 and loved it all. The chicken, the kebabs, and the imperial roll were 🧑‍🍳 chefs kiss. It is a small space, and while there were spaces when we got in, expect a tight and cozy environment.

Cordon Bleu is an Asian Fusion restaurant with both Vietnamese and Chinese influence. It is famous for amount of food... $20 including tip out the door if you just drink complimentary tea or water, even with the big "Number Five" plate which has pork, chicken (thigh and leg), salad, and rice with a lot of garlic and onion sauce, AND a fried (over-fried?) imperial roll. You will leave full. There are of course, a few other combos, and some other items, but almost everyone orders "Number Five". As the place is small, service is fast, and the food is tasty enough (though the roll is a bit overfried, IMHO). Still, the chicken and pork are great, lots of char. And that's the most expensive item on the menu. This place is a very economical eat, and the bar seat makes for more intimate atmosphere. Worth a try at least.

The two aunties working are amazing, very sweet ladies! This restaurant is a quintessential hole-in-the-wall experience with good food to boot. We enjoyed the five spice chicken, pork chops, and imperial roll. It's a small place but very cozy - although not my favorite in terms of viet food, I would 1000% come back if I'm in the area because it was such a fun experience. The aunties are very giving and there is a real cozy feeling that's hard to describe. They take cash or venmo! There's a chase bank around the corner so you can also grab cash if you need.

The aunties are really friendly. It's a small restaurant. The menu is quite unique but the five spice chicken is very tasty. Generous serving and inexpensive. Next time I would like to try mapo tofu.

Despite its humble setup, the food punches way above its weight. The chicken dish was fantastic — juicy, flavorful, and seasoned perfectly. Just one note: ask for the sauce on the side next time, since it’s poured over the rice by default and can get a bit heavy. The mapo tofu came in a generous portion, with silky-soft tofu and rich, savory flavor. It leaned a bit salty and wasn’t really spicy (even though the server checked if we wanted it spicy), but still really tasty overall. Extras? Free hot tea, always a plus. The best part — cash or Venmo only, and two full plates came out to under $30. Hard to beat that in the city. Overall: cozy, unpretentious, and packed with flavor. A must-try if you’re nearby and want great food without the frills.

this place is such a hidden gem serving the most authentic Vietnamese food in the city. prices are excellent and it's BYOB. highly suggest dining in so you can chat with the ladies and watch them grill your meats. make sure you order the imperial roll and remember to bring cash. they will accept cash or venmo for payment. we will definitely be back 🥰

Cordon Bleu has been on my list for a while so my friend and I decided to get dinner here on Tuesday night. I am so glad! When we got there we saw the CASH ONLY sign so we had to scurry to the bank real quick. Little did we know they actually take Venmo too. Seating is definitely rough since there are probably only 10 seats. It is bar seating with one small table in the corner. We did have to wait a little for the table to clear but it was fine. We eventually moved to the bar seating. The inside feels very homey and casual. Spicy pork chops (4.5/5): This is their lean pork chops served with green onion oil infused rice. This was SO GOOD. The rice was perfectly fluffy with the sauce and green onion on top. The smokey char flavor was very present on the pork. If you sit at the bar, you can see the grilling process which is fun. I'm used to a sweeter flavor with pork chops but still very good. I think every plate comes with some fish sauce on the side too. Number 5 (5/5): This combo includes 1 piece of their 5 spiced roast chicken (can do leg or breast), 1 imperial roll, 1 shish kebab, country salad, with meat sauce on rice. Literally AMAZING. I like simple, good food and this was exactly it. Meat and rice. What more do I need? The roll was so nice and crisp. The shish kebab was smokey and savory. The chicken was tender. I'm not sure what the meat sauce was but it was so good on the rice. Definitely coming back forever. Two plates was a ton of food too! I loved the casual ambiance. The little old ladies running the shop were nice and quick. They seemed to have a lot of take out orders too. Excited to try other items next time.

It's been at least over 2 decades since I've last been here and I wanted to see if it is still as good as I remembered or did my grownup palate change. Stopped by on Saturday around 1pm. We got lucky with parking, so already that was a good sign! My nephew and I both went with the #5 combo plate. The combo plate consisted of their famous 5 spice chicken 1/2, beef shish kebab, imperial roll, country salad, & country meat gravy over rice. Both orders came out to around $35. The place was packed and our order took about 20 minutes. They had the lights all off inside as it was super sunny and pretty hot if you sit by the window where we were while eating for our food. I can see why nobody was sitting there! lol Anyways, everything was still very good and hit the spot! My adult palate still approved! The imperial rolls are still gigantic and delicious as well in case ya'll were wondering!

The mapo tofu was soft, flavorful, and served generously, a bit salty and not spicy even though we were asked. Free hot tea, cash or Venmo only. Two plates came out to under thirty dollars. Great find for simple, affordable comfort food.

mom & pop, hole in the wall run by 2 aunties that make the best food ever. the chicken has that charcoal grill taste but it's so juicy and flavorful. everything is grilled right in front of you and comes served pipping hot. and all for only $10 for lunch (they take venmo & cash only).

Amazing comfort food in an unassuming hole in the wall spot. My friends and I have been on a search around the city for the best hole in the walls, and I have to say this really is up there! The food is so delicious and made right in front of you. The two ladies who make the food are so friendly and sweet. We came towards the end of the night, so she kept giving us the leftovers meats for free. Everything was super flavorful and the meat sauce is divine! Highly recommend trying the #5 combo which gives you a taste of everything, as well as the spicy pork chops. I really enjoyed the imperial roll which was super crispy and satisfying. So much food for a great price. You will not leave hungry. Cash only. I will definitely be back!

The best thing about living in a city is stumbling into hole in the wall restaurants and cafes and Cordon Bleu is definitely one of those places. When you enter, the entire space is taken up by the open kitchen and a large surrounding counter with bar stools. You sit down and are immediately handed a menu by one of the two owners. It's simple, but effective, with 5 or so combos or a la carte items to choose from. The meat sauce was incredibly indulgent and the pork rolls were crisp and bursting with flavor. Even though they're cash only, it's definitely worth the extra trip to the ATM to go watch them grill up some great 5 spice chicken

"It's like I have a Vietnamese grandma" A hole in the wall that is easily missed walking down California St! Service is very direct and transactional. They're cash only and seating is very limited so I prefer just ordering to go. I've gotten the 1 piece 5 (Spiced Roast Chicken, 1 Imperial Roll, 1 Shish Kebab, Country Salad, Meat Sauce on Rice). Portions are large so it can be a little heavy but you get a lot of food for the price! My favorites out of the combo are the shish kebab and imperial roll so if I don't want as much food I'll order the smaller combo that just includes those with a salad and rice.

For the price, portion size, and taste I left feeling so content and happy. I got combo #5: - chicken: so good - shish kebab: didn't love as much, gave like more chewy/hardy bacon vibes wouldn't get again. - cabbage: whatever sauce they put with it made me want more of the cabbage on the dish - imperial roll: decent, but not the best I had (the one from jasmine garden I enjoyed more). Would go back again, but perhaps will order the noodle salad with chicken substitute instead.

Great flavor, great value, great ambiance. It's a small restaurant with seating on a bar. They grill the chicken, fry the rolls or anything else right in front of you. The 5-spice chicken is very flavorful and has the char from the grill. Everything else - the rice, thin meat, salad and bean sauce I thought was just ok. It was a big meal, had some leftovers. For the price of 15$ it's an amazing deal. I like coming here for a quick cheap meal, but it can get crowded with a wait at peak times. Also cash only. I see it more as a staple for nob hill more so than a must try restaurant in SF.

First time coming here, and I was pleasantly surprised. we went on a Friday night around 7 PM and there was no available seating but we weren't in a rush so we decided to wait. after about 10 to 15 minutes, A few people got up and we were able to order immediately. there are only about 10 to 12 seats available, but you can always order to go We ordered one plate of the five spice chicken and another of the meat kebab with the imperial roll. That way we could try a little bit of both. The food was made right in front of us and came out so fresh and delicious. We split both plates and it was absolutely perfect. When I first received my food, I thought it was going to be too much but I ended up killing almost all of it. I definitely think this is a no-frills please where you literally are getting homemade food for a decent price. I will definitely be going back

I finally made it to Cordon Bleu for a quick solo dinner at the counter and it absolutely hit the spot. This place is cash only and run by some sweet aunties who have really mastered their craft when it comes to simple comfort Asian food. The menu is simple and easy to order from. This place is not fancy but it gets the job done. Portions are generous and the space is intimate. You sit shoulder to shoulder with other diners who are all there for the same reason, to enjoy some good food and to get their grub on! I ordered the number five combo which came with a little bit of everything. Meat sauce over rice, a gigantic imperial roll, a flavorful five spice barbecue chicken quarter, their take on shish kebab meat slices, and a refreshing country salad. I loved every bite and finished everything quickly. The meat sauce over rice was the highlight for me. I am a simple guy who could happily eat a big bowl of just that. I am already looking forward to coming back to see the aunties again and to try the ma po tofu and spicy pork chops. This spot delivers exactly what you need when you are craving something hearty and satisfying.

Came with an out of town friend who used to live in SF. She had never been here and loved her meal. Pleasantly surprised at the fast, friendly, quality meal that hit the spot and impressed her at the good prices and menu items!

One of my friends recommended this place to me, saying it was one of the best meals she's ever had! The seating area is quite small (~7 seats), but the service is great! Definitely more of a hole in the wall spot, and note that they only take cash! I got the Number 5, which was quite a large serving size, but very delicious. My friend got the noodle salad. She doesn't eat pork, but they were accommodating of her dietary restriction and adjusted appropriately. For instance, they switched out the imperial roll for a veggie one and the shish kebab for chicken! They also gave us complimentary tea. Food summary: Number 5 (rice with meat sauce, country salad, five spice chicken, shish kebab, imperial roll) - 10/10 I loved this dish! Everything merged together wonderfully to create a delicious meal. The chicken fell off the bone, and was seasoned very well. Nothing was too salty or too bland - just perfect. The rice was also cooked very well, and I enjoyed the meat sauce much more than I had thought. It has pork and onions in it. The imperial roll was fried well, and comes with sauce on the side. I definitely devoured this meal faster than I should've, but I would definitely come back again to eat this dish again and try new items!

Hole in the wall location. We door dashed the order and I got the shish kebab plate ($16 after tax/tip). It came with an imperial roll which was pretty decently sized and stayed crispy (comes with sauce too). The plate was hefty - rice portion was huge!! Meat slices were thin but some of the edges were burnt burnt. Rice is also topped with a gravy which was yummy. I would try the chicken plate next time. My friends got it and there was so much meat of the chicken!!

There are so many restaurants that go all in on curb appeal and in-house ambiance but then the food tastes like it should cost half of what you're paying for it. This place is the exact opposite. All of the effort goes into the consistent high quality of the food. That's it. And that's what you pay for, so it's reasonably priced. Keep in mind, this is a very small restaurant so don't try to come here in a group to dine in; sometimes it's hard to find a seat when you're alone. However, they do take out and there's a bar next door if you want a drink while you wait. It's also cash only.

Cordon Bleu is a special place. The moment you walk in here and see who is behind the counter and how they are cooking, it's pretty obvious you're going to get epic food. Not a complex menu but reallllyy complex flavor right in your face. This is just no frills, great eats and it's truly legendary. If you live in the neighborhood this is probably a place you frequent. As a San Francisco resident this is a must try establishment. The single grill in there has seen so much meat, it's probably keeping 1000 farms in business to this day. The imperial rolls are epic. The shish kabob is my favorite. But obviously the chicken is great and the meat sauce over rice is something new. The only negative thing I can say about this place is it's cash only. That's deterred me from several meals when I've been walking by. Cordon on Bleu, good on you. This has been my love letter. (4.7 Stars)

easy to miss, but once you try, hard to forget. where else can you get a nutritious, authentic viet-food-with-a-twist for $15 (cash only) in the city? the service is quick and ambiance is intimate - you're 5 feet away from the grill! they're speedy, you can see exactly the preparation and grilling process, but the magic behind the dishes remains in their unseen craft expertise. the 5-spice chicken is so tender, flavorful, and pairs wonderfully with the meat sauce on rice. for $15 flat, i left feeling like i could conquer the world with all the protein power on my side. it'd be a shame if you leave the city without having try cordon bleu!

This might be my new favorite meal in the, no joke. It's a small little restaurant tucked away in Nob Hill, and there's about 7 bar seats and one small table inside. You sit in front of the grill and watch them cook your meal unceremoniously, and service is not the fastest because they're cooking as they're serving. I came here as a solo diner since I knew seating was difficult for bigger parties. I sat next to a friendly stranger who told me he's been coming here longer than I've been alive and recommended the Number 5 Combo. With a recommendation like that, how could I order anything else? I chose to get chicken breast over the chicken leg. Because the restaurant was at capacity, my food took about 10 minutes to get, which is still super fast. It's served on a paper plate and has no ceremonious plating, but when I tell you I've never had a first bite so good! The meat sauce on the rice was so savory and rich. The chicken was so tender I hardly needed my knife to pull it off the bone, and the skin had the perfect amount of charring. The imperial roll is the biggest I've ever seen, and the outside was so crispy while maintaining the juicy meat inside. The shish kebab was peppery and sweet. It's a huge portion and could easily be two meals. I can't believe it was all under $20! They're cash only, so keep that in mind when you come. I definitely will be back, and even as good as the food is, I wouldn't want to have it except dining in -- the casual, friendly conversation with other patrons and with the cooks make the experience so homey and warm. Can't wait to be back!

So, I had a hankering for 5 Spice Chicken & happened to walk by this place a week ago, it's a sliver of a restaurant but there was lots of chattering coming from inside the place, it intrigued me. I had already eaten but decided to give it a try next time. So after reading all the positive reviews, I went. As I entered the place I noticed the narrow counter/seating & surrounding area is in bad shape, not the cleanest, by no means. I was pretty surprised. The place needs a good wash down & paint but perhaps that would raise the prices on the fabulous, large portions of food. The opposite side where the chef/owner cooks is where the magic takes place. Flames are grilling the meats, heating up the area, the exhaust sucks out all the smoke. Another woman is bringing out large pots of steamed rice. The meals are being plated, egg rolls, salad, dressing. It's like an assembly line. And some how the chef doesn't forget anything the diners are adding or subtracting from their orders. She tallies up the charges on a yellow pad, taking cash only. This is her domain. You can tell she loves every moment, order & customer.

Cozy little spot tucked away in California street. We walked in with a party of 4 and took half of the bar seats (that's how small it is) it's big enough for the 3 cooks to grill and a few customers to sit at the bar with a small table in the back for 2. We all got #5 which includes their chicken, imperial egg roll, and pork slices on top of a bed of rice with a meaty bean sauce + salad. The charred chicken was my favorite especially paired with the sweet fish sauce. One of the main cooks or owner? said they've been here for 15 years and haven't changed the recipe. Quick and friendly service with huge portions and it comes with an intimate grill experience. Would come again to try their egg rolls!

Wonderful hole in the wall restaurant that SF could use more of! The whole block smells amazing when their chicken is on the grill. I've only had the noodle salad so far and it'll be hard to try something new when this dish is so good. The chicken has more flavor cooked into it than I thought possible. The portion size is plentiful and food comes out quickly. I had a bite of my friend's meat sauce (what meat is used to make it?) and thought it was alright. I can see why it's reserved for the rice dishes to act like a gravy. I'd love to try the pork chops some time, but it'll have to be with a big group because I can barely finish one dish on my own!

The meat sauce! You will not be disappointed. I took a few friends here and they told me I greatly undersold the place. It's a family run place with the most tender bbq chicken and the imperial rolls are huge!

Cash only! One of my favorite places in SF that I regularly go to. The only reason why it's not 5 stars is that the taste can be a bit inconsistent -- sometimes being too salty. Get the chicken (duh) or mapo tofu. The portions here are generous, especially for the price. People rave about the imperial rolls -- they're good and heftier than your typical egg roll, but I also find it MUCH oiler so I'm not a huge fan. Everything is made to order and service can be slow, so don't come here when you're in a rush. Limited seating

If you asked me what my favorite reasonably priced cash only restaurant in the us is I would probably say cordon Bleu. The food, although simple is so satiating. Don't expect table service or for that matter quick service but trust me it'll taste good. I always order the number five. What makes it so good? The charring of the meat? The vibe- you're literally sitting over an open fire watching the sole proprietor work her Magic. Or is it the perfectly crispy imperial roll? Wait could it be the rice with meat sauce? I love this place, sometimes it can be a little chaotic, and sometimes you may have to wait for your check. But trust me it's worth it. Oh btw the chase atm is no longer functioning so plan ahead.

Sad to say this: have been going to this restaurant for approximately 50 years and my taste buds crave the meat sauce over rice but, it is unfortunate that the meat sauce has been changed to something very strange and no longer crave worthy. Makes me sad :(

No frills, pretty good portion size for the price. Reminiscent of a Vietnamese family backyard bbq. Katie, the owner seems down to earth and has good rapport with all the customers that dined in. It's cash only tho so just remember to bring some 20's before you come here. Definitely will come back :)

This lil hole in da wall joint, literally... lasted through earthquakes, COVID, inflation and is still here after 50 years! So good to see it still alive and serving the community! The food is as good as it looks ! That meat soss is da Boss, something gramama would make from scraps for your lunch... savory, delicious over the rice. I had the #1) Imperial Roll, Shish Kebab, Country Salad, Meat Sauce On Rice. There used to be a stick in the kebab but eliminated that cost, hence the namesake. One of the best thit nuong I have tasted! Very lean, no gristle like the other guys, the imperial roll is made with rice paper so the shell is a bubbly crispity crunchity delight! But that meat sauce is addicting like made with crack or MSG?(Chinese crack) Soooo good I wanna drink it. The ladies working are like my Chinese Aunties and the grillwork is perfect as expected with years of grillinnnnn... plates are served pretty quickly and the interior, well prolly hasn't changed much in the years gone by. And the value can't be beat, you can get a samich/burger or get a whole plate of food for less $$? This is the kinda spot my old dear friend Anthony Bourdain would have liked to visit, an old Asian not so greazy divey diner joint and he would have BYOB to boot!

Run by the two nicest little ladies who know how to cook a fantastic roast chicken, and provide great service. I don't know what I'd do without this place anymore. Cash only! My friends brought me here because they have been eating here for years since they live so close. We came for lunch around 11:30 AM on a Wednesday with a group of 4. The restaurant had just opened so we were the only ones there but after we sat down more and more people stared coming in. The restaurant is small with a few counter space and one small table in the back. It has a very hole in the wall appearance which is understandable since it has been open since the 60s. We had a nice chat with the owner who was very friendly and told us she has had this restaurant for the past 28 years! Service was good. And food came out quite quickly. I was told by my group to get entree five which I did. The chicken was tender and had a nice flame grilled flavor to it as did the kebab. The imperial roll was huge and very tasty - definitely my favorite part. My friends really like the meat sauce over rice but it wasn't my cup of tea. However, the plate overall was great! They are cash only but can take Venmo if needed but the owner prefers not to. All in all, I can definitely see why this place is an institution and really makes for a nice, comforting lunch spot.

This always hits the spot for me . The food has been consistently delicious for as long as I remember. The portions are big. The owner is very nice and friendly. It is very simple place but the price and quality of the food is very nice. I always come here when I need comforting food.I really recommend this restaurant because it is very good.

Sheeeeeeeesh, I finally stopped by and it's a big-time hit! Cordon Blue is this SMALL mom and pop shop. The chef is a vibe and she's grilling these to order. Food: everything is extremely well-seasoned. The chicken fell right off the bone and was so moist. The grilled pork was seared to perfection. The meat sauce on the rice is what you call exquisite. Service: this place is all cash so make sure to bring that! There's a chase bank right next to the restaurant so it's no problem if you forget. Ambiance: the restaurant is so quaint. The counter sits around 8 ppl and I look forward to doing that soon!! All you can ask for!

This is one of the best hole in the wall restaurant I've been at in the city! This place is really small with only a couple of counter seats but the food is so delicious, especially the chicken that is so tender and comes off the bone easily with so much flavor! Their imperial roll is also amazing!!! Recommend coming here at lunch for their combo meal and the price is really good for the portion too 10/10!!!

Call them to order, don't do Doordash, which takes 25% as a fee. Very friendly staff, fantastic food. Eating inside is... an experience. Very small place, but loved getting to watch the two women behind the counter work. Ordered the 5 spice chicken (obviously) and the noodle salad which totally went way beyond my expectations. Will 100% be coming back.

Overall: A Heads up: Cash only! Food: A The go-to is a grilled chicken paired with beans and rice. Be ready to use your hands on the chicken but trust me it's worth it! Don't let the casual cramped diner style throw you off - the owner is a friendly woman and you get to watch the grill right in front of you.

HOW THE HECK HAVE I LIVED IN SF FOR 25 YEARS AND NEVER BEEN HERE?? So many times when i have driven or walked by, I have wanted to go here. I have looked at the reviews dozens of times. Anyway - suffice it to say I am an Idiot for not going here sooner. Yes - it is a dump inside, only about 9 counter seats, and one is currently sheared off., which would make for a mighty uncomfortable meal. After a couple of happy hour cocktails on a Thursday night, 3 of us headed over, the counter was full, but people were finishing up - so we waited. Hubbs and I ordered a #5 to share - it was Plenty!. It includes a crispy imperial roll, rice with beef sauce, and a piece of BBQ chicken (on the bone) and 2 pieces of boneless pork. WOW, it hit the spot in my belly like a nuclear missile, in a good way. The meal is cooked right in front of you by 2 ladies who have been doing it for years and years. This is NOT fine dining, but a perfect meal after a couple of cocktails. The chicken was juicy, the roll was crispy and the meaty rice was a great sponge for it all. I cannot wait to go back - the ladies highly recommended the chicken salad, though it will be difficult to stray from good ol' #5!

Got there at 630 on Saturday night and got a table for two straightaway although others that came later had to wait. The food is delicious. We got two number 5s - seems like the most popular item on the menu. Imperial rolls very crispy and delicious, chicken is yum, shish kebab very tasty although a tad too salty, the sauce over the rice is tasty but I might ask for it without the sauce next time. Cozy, no frills ambiance. No rush in the cooking, lots of takeaway orders to fill as well as for eat-in customers. This place will be a regular for us for sure! Btw they take Venmo as well as cash.
