10 Best Bakeries in Chinatown, Boston | Eater Boston

"Open past the average dinner hour, Corner Cafe Bakery is a great stop day or night. Highlights include tender pineapple rolls, lychee mousse cakes, and a ton of lovely mooncakes, but the selection is vast and it’s worth dipping into the savory side as well. Just down the block, sibling Top Bread is worth a stop too." - Terrence Doyle

Where to Buy Mooncakes in Boston for the Mid-Autumn Festival | Eater Boston

"Corner Cafe also has one of the biggest selections of mooncakes in Chinatown. There are plenty of photogenic Cantonese-style mooncakes in colors that match their filling: purple (purple sweet potato), red (red lotus), yellow (pineapple), and green (green tea). Corner Cafe also offers small and large classic Cantonese-style mooncakes filled with red bean, green bean/mung bean, red lotus, white lotus, mixed nut, or winter melon (also available in mini), as well as the same durian, green tea, and mung bean/green bean snow skin mooncakes as Taiwan Bakery. Sibling store Top Bread across the street also has a few of the same offerings."

Corner Cafe Bakery - Review - Chinatown - Boston - The Infatuation

"Just in case you’re wondering, Corner Bakery Cafe is in fact located at the corner of two streets in Chinatown. Their bread and buns are made at an off-site location (which, interestingly, also supplies Great Taste Bakery and 101 Bakery), though the cakes do seem to be made on-premise. We recommend ordering a cake or three, since they come in both single serving and larger sizes." - Joel Ang

Google
Have been here a couple times before, and they have yet to disappoint. The cakes are so airy and soft with a real and non-overwhelming flavor of chocolate, cream, lemom, etc. The first time I went I bought a chocolate cake simply because I was astounded by how soft it was. In regards to the more savory ones like the scallion and pork floss buns, they are also delectable. They add a bit of mayonaise inside of them to add a creamy flavor to the soft meat inside. Lastly, the scallion bun is very large. Every time I'm even remotely around Chinatown I make a point to try and stop in for something sweet and/or savory, you should too!

Google
Got the Portuguese Egg Tart. While the custard filling was pretty good, the pastry shell left a lot to be desired as it lacked the traditional crisp, laminated, and flaky texture it’s supposed to have. It was basically the pastry shell used in a traditional egg custard tart. The store sells egg custard tarts as well, but there seems to be barely any difference between both tarts.

Located at the corner, they have a lot of pastries, and they sell out closer to the end of the day on many selections. Had a great molten egg yolk bun which was different than other bakeries. I think also associated with the Taiwan Bakery down the street (shared logos on the bags).

Google
had the red bean egg yolk buns and they were quite tasty. had the right flavors but not overly sweet. happy that the locals also vouch for the spot. not sure if there are better spots, but would recommend grabbing something when in chinatown

It’s in china town. I feel it’s little china to taste chinese sweets. Staffs are kind too

Google
Their vanilla bean cake with fresh berry filling has become my go-to for every birthday. The baker uses real vanilla pods you can see in the batter. Decorations are elegant but not overwhelming, just had them recreate my grandmother's lace pattern in buttercream.

Google
Asian bakery in the Boston Chinatown area. There's so many bakeries and pastries to choose from in various flavors. Some are very nicely made into fruit shape like the mini durian cake. All the bakeries are made fresh daily. You can tell it is well made with top-notch ingredients when you eat it the next day. The mango and lychee cake was very fruity and flavorful, not too sweet, which is perfect. Definitely would come back when we visit Boston again in the future.

Yelp
This place is a gem--very clean, well-stocked, and full of incredible treats. If you have a sweet tooth, you'll love their fridge section, packed with cakes, rolls, and other desserts. They also have a fantastic selection of traditional mooncakes, including Pandan, Red Bean, Sweet Potato, and Red Lotus Seed Paste. Wait till you see their wall of savory buns and rolls. Think hotdog buns, BBQ chicken, ham and cheese, bacon pork floss, and so much more--it's like a never-ending lineup of deliciousness. And the best part? Almost everything is under $5! Very important- here's a $10 minimum for credit card purchases or you can just pay cash! The staff is super friendly, and they're always happy to help if you're not sure what to try. My personal favorites? The cheesecake and the coffee cake roll--both are chef's kiss! Highly recommend stopping by when you're in Chinatown.

Yelp
Located at the corner, they have a lot of pastries, and they sell out closer to the end of the day on many selections. Had a great molten egg yolk bun which was different than other bakeries. The BBQ pork bun was just so-so, while beautiful on the outside, the inside lacked enough flavor and chinese BBQ sauce to make it savory- ended up being a rather dry bun. I think also associated with the Taiwan Bakery down the street (shared logos on the bags).

Yelp
One of my go to bakeries in Chinatown! They consistently have great pastries, cakes, cookies, drinks, etc. Their cakes are beautifully decorated. I highly recommend their egg tarts and bbq pork buns, they're so fluffy and plentiful in filling. Workers are friendly and efficient

Yelp
Very cute little place! We didn't try much, just the chocolate mousse, mango mousse, and mango boba. The mousse was so good! And gorgeous presentation as well. The boba, on the other hand, wasn't very good and definitely seems outsourced! They were very nice here though, but there is a $10 minimum unless you're paying in cash.

Yelp
So I have mixed feeling about this store, the buns were really great and I was craving more after. I got the coconut almond bun, and the custard bun which was my favorite, it had custard inside and a layer on top that got crunchy when baked. Very good. But the service wasn't great, it was busy and the two women working seemed to not want to interact at all when asked questions or when trying to check out. There is a sign that says card only over $10. My food rang up at 11.25 yet she was pointing to get more to use card. Odd. Maybe there was a cultural different but it was very off putting.

Yelp
Great buns and deserts to choose from! Great for snacks on the go! My boyfriend grabbed a whole variety of buns and enjoyed all of them. I got the Pandan moon cake. It had great texture and flavor.

Yelp
They make a mean Portuguese egg tart here and the prices were like pre-2024 inflation levels (two tarts for around $3.60??), but the egg tart wasn't my absolute favorite in Boston. It was so jiggly that it fell apart before I could pick it up to take a bite. Definitely something to eat with a spoon. Notwithstanding the lack of structural integrity, the flavor was phenomenal and I really liked the buttery, flaky crust. They have a good variety of other Chinese pastries, including moon cakes of different fillings and buns. $10 credit minimum.
google avatar

Jim N.

Yelp
Exceptionally good moon cakes one of the best I've ever had. No comparison to the ones you get in the can from the grocery. If you've never had a fresh one from the bakery, you're missing out big time. The sesame paste is so good and they are not overly sweet you can really taste the sesame filling. Yum yum yum.

Yelp
I really like the pineapple bun and the milk bun because I have been craving it for so long. This place literally had everything I wanted. I honestly will come back again for these pastries.

Yelp
My wife and I discovered Corner Cafe & Bakery while in the area and noticed it had great reviews. Honestly, I had low expectations, as my previous experiences with Chinese bakeries hadn't been stellar in the Boston area. However, Corner Cafe & Bakery completely exceeded my expectations, the buns were delicious. Born and raised in NYC, I'd say this spot is just as good, if not better than some in the city (depending on what you get). I tried the steamed bun, pineapple bun, pineapple custard bun, egg tart (probably one of the best in the Boston area), and a Taiwanese bun (the name escapes me). While it's a bit pricey for what it is, I'd gladly pay a few extra dollars for quality baked goods instead of settling for mediocre pastries at a lower price.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute bakery in downtown Boston's Chinatown district. The name of this spot is fitting because this Bakery is literally located at the corner of a relatively busy intersection entering Chinatown. We popped in on a Friday evening after grabbing a bite. There were sweet and savory options to choose from -- fresh baked breads, pastries, tarts, cakes, and a bunch of in betweens of what an Asian bakery has to offer. We spent $50 and walked out with a box of assorted treats, and some egg tarts to share. Cravings satisfied. Support local y'all!

Yelp
Typical Asian bakery, have nice variety and they are individually wrapped . Minimal $10 for credit/debit to be used. I had the cream by and the filing was mediocre but the bun it self was amazing . It tasted like almonds . No street parking available but there is garage parking nearby and there is a park just around the corner to enjoy your pastry

Yelp
I come here once a week for a dessert and lunch haul. There's always a consistent yet wide variety of baked goods. I always get a couple baozi to bring to work for lunch.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
Good bakery. It was packed but they had some really nice looking and tasting desserts. I got some tarts (not the egg tart but another one) and a couple mousse cakes (mango and lychee). The lychee was a bit bland, but the tart and the mango mousse cakes were excellent. We saw someone purchase some bread that looked like melon pan, and we returned later to buy some, but they were already sold out, so we will most definitely be back to try those.

Yelp
YUM! cheap and tasty. i love bao. the filling was sweet and juicy, the dough soft and supple. everything i needed. seems like lots of locals come here, so you can trust it's good!
google avatar

Adina S.

Yelp
This is one of your pretty standard bakeries in Chinatown. I will say it seems like some of their pastries are a bit pricier relative to their competitors, but not by a substantial margin. I like that most of the pastries are set up for you to just grab them and pay at the counter. The employees keep the line moving, so you shouldn't be in there for long. One of my favorites is the BBQ pork bun because they actually do it right! A lot of the other bakeries give you a steamed bun with some kind of mystery meat in it, unless you're careful.
google avatar

Ellie C.

Yelp
A solid Chinatown bakery with an especially large selection of chilled cream-based cakes and mooncakes. We tried the black sesame mooncake, and it was fresh, soft, and not overly sweet. Would come back to try more of their flavors!
google avatar

Kristi Y.

Yelp
a lil gem in boston's chinatown! we were wandering around looking for a sweet treat and this little bakery has such a wide selection of classic chinese bakery treats- mooncakes, cakes (individual sizes too), cookies, bread, egg tarts, and milk tea/tea drinks. ordered a half dozen egg tarts and they were delicious! it's more of a cakey crust rather than the flakey, which i prefer. the egg portion was so smooth and not too sweet, more custardy than gelatin-y. so so good! i want to get more to bring back home.

Yelp
First-timer at a Chinese bakery--Quite good! Though I'm often in Chinatown, I've always been intimidated by the Chinese bakeries because of their sheer variety of unfamiliar offerings. Everything looks a little too processed and you imagine that they are over-sweetened. But, gathering up my courage, I waltzed in and scooped up a few--I was planning on trying two but had to buy 3 pastries because they have a $10 credit card minimum. Overall they were very good-- --Butter milk bun: My favorite, a really soft and airy pastry, filled with a mild marzipan-like custardy filling. Reminded me of a really fresh almond croissant. --Coconut cream bun: Soft fluffy outer bun, a little chewy, with a white cream filling that tastes subtly of coconut and is only mildly sweet. Very good. --Red Lotus cake: The most challenging of the 3, this was a visually beautiful round pastry, and the top was imprinted with Chinese lettering and other designs, like a mandala. Most of the interior is a plum colored red lotus paste, dense, mildly sweet, but just not a flavor I enjoyed much--probably an acquired taste. Happily, I barely scratched the surface of Cafe Corner and there are lots of other things to try in the future!

Yelp
Yummy desserts. It's less a cafe than a bakery, as there's not really a place to sit. Not a huge selection of items but the ones they have are all really good.
google avatar

Charoni L.

Yelp
Really good egg custard tarts. (Don tat), and I tried many egg custard tarts. Custard melts in your mouth.

Yelp
Neat little corner bakery in Chinatown with assorted cakes, breads, and Chinese pastries. They even decorated super cute little cakes for lunar new year coming up. Sometimes, the bread selection is limited depending on the time of day.

Bernadette

Yelp
Im a fan and come whenever in the area, I tried both variations of their pineapple buns, their molten egg custard one, their cream bun, bbq Bork bun, and the custard bun I believe. They were all so good! They are super affordable with one large bun costing around $2. For everything I think I paid like $11. They do have a $10 minimum for card but I don't see that as a problem. Im a bread fanatic so I loved eating them with my morning tea! If you were to go I recommend the custard one. Also I keep seeing people complain when the pineapple bun doesn't have filling, pineapple buns get their name from the pattern on the topping because it resembles a pineapple, not because of their filling. Common misconception. I felt their service was fine though I do see people complaining about it, the staff was totally friendly towards me and answered all my questions. I'd go again.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
The pork buns and pineapple buns are among the best in the city. Everything is baked fresh every day and you can't beat the price as most items are less than $2. They also have a fun selection of moon cakes which isn't something you always see. For those not as familiar with Chinese pastries, the ones here follow the art of not tasting overly sweet and being super soft. Tip: if you get any 5 of the buns that are under $2, the 6th one is free!
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Solid Chinese bakery with a variety of breads, mooncakes, buns, cakes, egg tarts and other sweet treats. I love coming in here for dessert or to stock up on baked goods. They only accept credit card for purchases over $10 so make sure you have cash or buy enough items. My favorite are the large steamed pork buns- they have salty egg, pork, chinese sausage, and mushroom in them. Yum!
google avatar

Wing S.

Yelp
Taste of buns are decent but doesn't like the rules they have, In order to get a plastic bag to carry your food you must pay cash and for no sales tax you have to buy six items or more.

Cathy N.

Yelp
There were some decent options. I got the mini watermelon moon cake which didn't taste good. I do not recommend that flavor. I also got the Black Forest cream cake which tastes great and was fluffy. The service was quick. You grab what you want and bring it to the counter. I believe the minimum credit card order in $10. I did not see any seating.
google avatar

Rebecca K.

Yelp
I love this bakery! Best bakery in Chinatown, in my opinion! They have the best bean cakes - red bean are my favorite. This bakery, compared to the others in Chinatown, is always clean and always well stocked. They also have some really yummy chocolate desserts. I encourage you to venture you into Chinatown and get some yummy authentic desserts here. Enjoy!
google avatar

Angel P.

Yelp
Cafe Corner is always a good option for a Chinese bakery in Chinatown. There is a $10 minimum for credit cards, so bring cash if you're spending less. I always get their baked goods (~$2-4 each). I recommend the pineapple bun, pork floss bun, and scallion roll. They also have cakes, moon cakes, egg tarts, cookies, and pastries.
google avatar

Nat W.

Yelp
There are so many Chinese bakeries around and it is hard to pick one. While Corner Cafe is not the best one out there, it is a decent one. I did like their coconut cream bum and sesame ball. Egg tart and rolled cake with cream are just okay. I'm sure there are other tasty items I didn't get to try. Price is maybe on the higher end for Chinese bakery in the area, but the service was nice. I would go back to try more items.
google avatar

david l.

Yelp
I was in town and staying nearby. I wanted to try Boston Egg Tarts and Chinese bakery coffee. The egg tarts were delicious, especially if you managed to catch them out of the oven. The coffee is great as well but on both occasions I was there, they served Luke warm.
google avatar

Niharika G.

Yelp
The Mango Mousse: love the outer layer, light, sweet, tangy, and the mousse i could eat a lb of. Light, airy, smooth, coats your mouth in creamy mango sweetness. The lotus and egg yolk cake: love the subtle fresh sweetness from the lotus. Its a special thing. Cant say i love candied yolk, not here to yuck anyones yums but rubbery, stinky, crumbly. Takes some getting used to. Looks better than it tastes.

Yelp
The people here spoke my dialect and they were nice so I was very excited to try the pastries here. The pastries and buns were so big yet the pricing was cheap. And they looked amazing when we browsing. I was so excited and grabbed a variety of what they still had left at around 7:30 PM. Also, there's a minimum of $10 if you want to pay with card. EGG TART (蛋挞) - 1.55 There was a lot of custard for the amount of pastry which was great. I thought the pastry could have been baked a bit longer to give it more of a crisp. The egg custard was also a bit bland but the consistency was good. Overall, this egg tart could use a bit more OOMPH. WIFE COOKIE (老婆饼) - 5.50 There was two of these cookies wrapped in a plastic bag. So much crust/pastry and not enough wintermelon paste. It was honestly so crusty and dry and I felt like i was just eating the pastry. I could barely taste any of the wintermelon so that was quite disappointing. Trying the roast pork buns (which were fat and big) tomorrow for breakfast. Hope my luck with that will be better!
google avatar

John Y.

Yelp
There are not a lot of decent chinese bakeries left in Chinatown. We are glad this place is actually pretty decent. Its on the corner of Harrison Ave and Beach St, so very convenient and accessible. We like that most of the buns are offered on the self-service racks and each bun is individually wrapped. The non wrapped stuff is available if you ask for it over the counter, so this puts us at ease. The buns tastes good and the best part is that they are still priced very competitively. Most items were no more than $2, which is great as most other bakeries seem to have raised their prices too high. They also accept credit cards and the staff speaks decent English. We'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Victoria N.

Yelp
Got the lychee mousse! Delicious and not too sweet. A very unique pastry! There is a wide variety of other pastries as well.
google avatar

Julia T.

Yelp
I wandered into this bakery hoping to find pineapple buns, a snack I always have an appetite for. Cafe corner did not disappoint. The prices are very fair and they sell all the Asian bakery essentials at a fair price (~$2 per bun and ~$5 for cakes). I grabbed a few pineapple buns and a pork floss bun to share - thoroughly enjoyed everything. I recommend bringing some cash since there is a minimum for credit card payments. Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Jannet C.

Yelp
We came here to pick up some authentic Hong Kong style pastries, and everything was delicious. We got the wife cakes, which are flaky pastry with winter melon filling, mocha roll cake, and pineapple filled buns. There are also lots of individual mouse cakes of unique flavors such as leche cream cakes, passion fruit and mango cakes, and moon cakes which are traditional Chinese pastry filled with flavors such as lotus paste or red beans. Everything is fresh, unique and delicious! So we'll be back whenever we are in the area.

Yelp
Cafe Corner is one of the cleanest Chinese bakeries in Boston in my mind. The products are kept in a neat, clean area, so somehow I feel a lot more confident getting bakeries from here than other places within the area. Staff there can also speak English well (and products generally have English description associated with them), so it's easier and there's just more peace of mind getting Asian bakeries from here than anywhere else. I've gotten various types of bakeries from Cafe Corner like cakes, pineapple/Asian buns and some creme cakes and they all tasted great. My favorite so far had been something as cheap and simple as pineapple buns ($1) from this place. The only qualm I have about this place is that they don't have as much selection as some other places. But if you are looking for clean, sanitary and quality (also tasty) products, this bakery is where you should go!

Shaleen T.

Yelp
Love this place!! Went two times during a weekend trip to Boston and super friendly staff. Egg tarts were some of the best I've had. Lots of variety and fair prices :D overall, the quality was really good, even the paper bag they gave us lol. Would definitely come again
google avatar

Marni M.

Yelp
Got a few items since I was in the area. Since I was picking up for friends and family, I tried a few options. I got their Taiwanese pineapple bun, regular custard bun, bbq pork, ham and cheese, almond bun, and coconut bun. They are all delicious and very reasonably priced ($11 for all of them!). Can't wait until I can come back for more!

Yelp
So if you just got screwed by Time Warner And creepy dudes hit on you in the Sauna Then I know something tasty In the form of a pastry Boston Chinatown's Cafe Corner! I feel cornered into writing this review, honestly. I'm a big fan of the Cafe Corner Bakery and in fact it's probably the best bakery in Chinatown. Their wife cakes are delightful and delectable and chalky and perfect. They have a big version and a small version, and the small version is only available as a box of several. You can get one big version by itself and oh my God every bite is heaven. They really know how to make a wife cake. I can't wait to give it to the wife. The cake I mean. If it's so good, it's like watching porn, then it's Cafe Porner. But the real selling point here is the Portuguese custard tart. And yes I do mean Portuguese. They have a Hong Kong version like everybody else does which I'm sure is really good but their Portuguese version is off-the-charts spectacular. It's burned and Flaky and crispy and gooey and everything that you could ever want from a Portuguese custard tart. It's like one of the really good ones up in Toronto or Newark New Jersey. But it's right here in Boston and is the only one of its kind that I found. You can see why I am so enthused about this place. It's a must try in Boston, for everyone and their pet Llama. If everyone dies while you're eating your tarts, then you're a Cafe Mourner. And they clearly understand what their big selling point is because there is a huge picture on the side of their building of the Hong Kong version and the Portuguese version side-by-side, for anybody who wasn't sure what they were getting. The Portuguese version is awesome as is the customer service here, and the girls were tickled and delighted to take pictures of me with my food. If you get really horny while eating here (I think they did), then don't worry, I'm Cafe Hornier. Prices are cheap and so is your mother. My favorite Bakery in Chinatown. By a mile. Probably my fave in all of Boston. And if your computer has been hacked by Bots, then what have the Bots-done?
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
Small clean bakery. Pretty desserts with cute to-go packaging. Nothing to report about staff. Came here because I wanted to try the lychee mousse cake. Tasted like it was made with real lychee vs lychee flavoring or extract. There were chunks of lychee in the mousse too. My aunts really like the durian cake.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Got some egg tarts and they tasted delicious! They were pretty fresh and served warm. The pastry was flaky and buttery, while the egg custard had just the right taste and consistency. Reasonable price as well ($2.85 for 2)!
google avatar

Yaran S.

Yelp
Clean, bright and spacious, not a typical Chinese bakery. Paper wrap cake 4/5 moist and soft Almond cake 2/5 tasteless Soy milk cream roll 2/5 no soymilk taste, can't compare to what I had in China Coconut cake 2/5 little coconut taste Dried pork bun 3/5 Service is good. Selection is limited.
google avatar

Helen L.

Yelp
Selection is limited at this corner bakery. Not a lot of buns or breads available. Most are modern offerings versus traditional buns and baos. If you want to get their buns, I'd come early because, in addition to the limited selection, there is limited quantity of everything. Probably better to come check out the Swiss rolls and cakes. Not the best bakery. The most popular item is probably the coconut bun with cream filling. The reviews that say they have authentic Portuguese tarts are wrong. I am from Macau (born there) where Portuguese egg tarts originate. These are not the real deal. They might be decent but are not authentic, save for the tiny bits of caramel used sugar on top of the egg custard. Price here is $0.30-$1.25 more than other bakeries in Boston Chinatown. Most are individually wrapped so you can just grab what you want on your own.
google avatar

Logan D.

Yelp
Not too busy on a rainy Saturday around 5:00PM. Pros: -Beautiful pastries -Inexpensive -Mooncakes! -- Red Bean Moon Cake Essentially a huge chunk of thick red bean paste enrobed in a thin layer of pastry. I prefer a red bean bun, but this was a beautiful pastry.
google avatar

Christian L.

Yelp
The trifecta of food is high quality, filling quantity at an affordable price. You genuinely can't go wrong with any of their bakery options but if you're feeling very safe (like I was here), go with their bestsellers: pineapple bun, pork flakes bun etc. Heres 3 cases you'd want to stop by here: 1. Surprise your girlfriend after work with minimal cost 2. Breakfast run with friends and share different buns 3. Stock up before running to the airport 5/5 for warm service and warm bakery
google avatar

Vincent Y.

Yelp
One of the best bakeries in Boston Chinatown. Bread is made fresh daily and I went here and purchased a variety of five buns for only $9!
