On the Grid : The Corner Tavern

"The Corner Tavern is one of our go-to bars in the hood. Friendly bartenders, good food that's not fussy and well priced. Perfect spot to kick off the night, have a night cap, or chill and watch a sporting event. It's the kind of spot you can enjoy when it's packed to the brim or empty. It's sub street level which makes it cozy and inviting. Best bang for your buck in the area." - Amalgam

The Corner Tavern - Review - Back Bay - Boston - The Infatuation

"The Corner Tavern is an underground pub on the corner (duh) of Mass and Marlborough. It’s a casual neighborhood hangout place with a menu that’s much better than standard bar food, thanks to things like prosciutto fig pizza and 12-hour brisket tacos." - Dan Secatore

Exceptional food in Back Bay! You can tell the staff really cares about the quality of their food and the ambiance of their restaurant. Their pasta salad was incredible and made with a pesto sauce instead of a traditional oil based dressings. I absolutely recommend it. Appx $23 after tax and tip for a sandwich, side, and fountain drink.

There was a loud crowded party going on, but my friends and I were able to sit in the back and it was fantastic! Great atmosphere. Fantastic servers / bartenders. The food was superb.!!❤️❤️🔥. And the coasters were a lot of fun! 😂🤣 The grilled cheese with brisket and cheddar on sourdough. It was the crispiest, most tender sandwich. The tomato bisque soup was so good with just enough spice. I don't know when I'll be back to Boston, But when I do , I'm definitely coming back here.

Google
A relatively small but charming place. They have done a great job with the aesthetics of the place and the overall ambience. Very polite service staff as well who took the time to engage with us. Far as the food is concerned we ordered the pita bread + hummus and it was delicious. Looking forward to the next visit!

Google
Great little corner bar. We stopped in here on a rainy day for lunch and a few beers. The bartender gave some great recommendations on local brews and the meatball sub I had for lunch was delicious and filling with fantastic bread. I'll definitely be back if I'm in the area again.

One of the waitresses was extremely rude to us for no reason. Came here to celebrate my graduation with friends. She was friendly to others, which made us feel singled out. Honestly, it felt racist and I won’t be coming back. I am supposed to enjoy this moment, here I am, thanks to her sitting here and writing this.

Boom 💥 Great neighborhood bar! We loved it. So many friendly people that’s mingling with the locals. Great food which was amazing. Love this place. Server bring drinks quickly and the atmosphere was a beast!! The food is king!

Google
Lovely little bar with a cozy atmosphere and a small dining area. Very casual, chill place to vibe and chat. It can get quite loud and crowded so expect to shout talk to your companions at peak hours.

Google
As other commenters have said, bar is super strict if you’re a foreigner. I’m in my 30s and the seccy wouldn’t accept my Aussie drivers licence as ID - said they only accepted passports. Ended up going to a bar a couple of blocks down who were happy to accept drivers licence and bank card as ID.

Yelp
I found this place while on a trip to Boston while looking for a neighborhood bar. I had the loaded tots and it was delicious. It was more of a meal than I anticipated as it filled me up. It was busy while I was there and it was hard to find a spot to be able to eat. If you are drinking only, there's plenty of standing room.

Yelp
What a great spot! I came here with my Dad and two young children. Everyone was so nice and accommodating to all of us. The food was also very yummy- we had meatballs, a soft pretzel, pork tacos, tots and clam chowder. Everything was very tasty with the pork taco being my fave. The drinks were also good and a nice pour! Highly recommend this spot and popping in for dinner and a drink.

Yelp
This is a cozy friendly local sports bar. The food was better than your typical bar food and the servers are attentive. The food came out quick and the hot food was hot!!! So so yummy. It is loud but we were watching the Men's Basketball Final Four game so the noise level was understandable. Not touristy at all. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
10/10 espresso martinis. Cozy vibes. Friendly staff. Warm. A neighborhood bar at its finest. We'll be back any time we're in town.

Yelp
Went on a Tuesday, not much of a crowd, yet despite that the bartender with the bun and facial hair wouldn't take my order. I was at the bar standing for a good while, asked to order twice and he pretended he didn't hear me. I guess they don't want money?
google avatar

Abiel S.

Yelp
Best pesto sandwich and get it with the tomato soup the pizzas are very good the use a good marinara sauce on them

Yelp
You gotta believe in fate at least sometimes. So I drove 15 min across town for supposedly yelps good recommended wings. I tried to order over the phone and the guy that answered gave me the hardest time as if he didn't understand sweet and spicy. He said look at the menu and call again. Hung up. Wow. I was outside and we talk again face to face. He understood clearly, maybe he wanted me to know I wasn't in Detroit but in Boston. Obviously more gangsta. Lol. Oh I wish. Anyway, I had a much better experience down the street. If you're looking for Boston awful stereotype, look no further. Shame he was my kind...do better. Even when it's busy.

Yelp
Another stop on our Back Bay excursion. Neat little - exactly as described corner tavern. It's downstairs and very quaint, comfortable and inviting. Cold beer, menu was adequate. Had all the regulars. Chicken wings were real! Meatball app was yummy and the Wife had the cob salad which was loaded! Stop if you're in the neighborhood. Good choice!

Yelp
Complete trash. Don't go. Food trash, Service super trash. Do not go! We walked in and the bartender immediately said we were too drunk. We werent drunk at all.... Had like 3 drinks each all day. I think he just didn't want to deal with people in his empty bar. Weird cocky square bartender.

Yelp
Nice little place with great ambience, service, food, and drinks. It was late so I forgot to take pictures. It was really nice they had food service late at night. Our bartender/server was really friendly and attentive. Food was served quickly. Great quality. When in Boston, I would definitely visit again!

Yelp
Cute bar with fast service and great ambiance. It was adorablely decorates for Christmas

Greg S.

Yelp
Great neighborhood pub - one of my Back Bay faves! Good food, drinks and service! Worth it whether local or visiting.
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
Pros - good beer program, nice liquor selection, turkey sandwich was very very good, extremely clean inside Cons - 2 of 3 servers were snotty/standoffish at best, "suggested tip" calculations were off to the point it seemed intentional (made me wonder they're trying to get more money from people who don't do math), music selection was laughably bad Would return

Rob D.

Yelp
Friendly and prompt service, even on busy Saturday night in the crowded (yet convivial) bar area. Delicious salmon BLT and Caesar salad - totally exceed expectations. Great menu, with an extensive creative drink and tap list. Will be back.

Aida B.

Yelp
loved this place great cozy quaint vibe bartender was super friendly made great drinks and gave excellent food recommendations the brisket tacos were amazing just loved it would definitely go back! Highly recommend you check it out!

Yelp
Awesome wings! Was hesitant at first because the facade is understated. But I was mistaken to judge the book by the cover. Mixed age crowd. Fun for anyone and great food. I had their house Sauvignon Blanc to drink and it was very nice. Stop in!
google avatar

Yelp
Call this place they do not have half price appetizers you have them listed that they do they say they don't please update your list

Lori M.

Yelp
GREAT chicken pesto melt, GREAT meatball sub., GREAT cocktail price$ and selection. Ask for The Last Word!!! Cozy, shady location outside, A/C comfort inside /downstairs!!!

Julia B.

Yelp
Our AirBnB was right around the corner from the Corner Tavern so we headed over for dinner. Very cute place. We had hot sandwiches with salads, they were delicious. My nephew is still talking about the meatball sub. Things in Boston can be very pricey, I thought the Corner Tavern was an excellent value too.

Yelp
Solid bar if you want some good food. Beers are a bit pricier than other taverns I have been to in the city, ranging from $8-10. The place got packed after 10 pm when we came here on a Saturday night, mostly people trickling in after the Red Sox game. And the noise levels were off the charts around 11:30pm - felt like we were in a mosh pit with little wiggle room so had to leave at that point. Honestly some of the BEST/ freshest bar food I've had in a long time. We ordered the club sandwich and a pretzel to share. We got TWO.. lemme repeat that... TWO large pretzels which was an absolute treat. The honey mustard sauce was LIT (can also get cheese dipping sauce too but my poor lactose intolerant self didn't want to be farting all night so opted out). The club sandwich was packed with those NuTriEnTs - I'm talking fresh lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and chicken grilled to perfection *chefs kiss* & it was MASSIVE, and incredibly fresh ingredients. The food itself was very simple but you could tell they put some love into their food! And I still dream about the salad dressing that they put on the salad. Also don't judge us for ordering salad at a bar :) So sad that their beers, esp IPA's are so overpriced otherwise I'd be coming here all the time. Overall, love the concept of this as your friendly neighborhood bar. It was a great vibe and would love to come here on a weekday when it is less rowdy (hopefully). PS, only one person in the bathroom at a time so if you gotta pee, tread carefully since you might be waiting a bit!!
google avatar

Yelp
Certainly, this is more of a bar than a restaurant. Don't be misled. We did get some wings. They were good. And one person in our party got a bowl of tomato soup, which she said was good. Otherwise it was just drinks. Here's what I'll say: If you're going to Boston for a Red Sox game, this place is close to Fenway, but far enough away (10 minute walk) that not many fans know about it. You won't have to fight the big crowds at Cask & Flagon, etc during pre- or post-game. Just go here. It's tucked away and you can get some wings and some beers. Again, to be clear, I wouldn't go here for a full meal or dining experience. Just an appetizer and beers.
google avatar

Cynthia P.

Yelp
What a find!! This gem, the Corner Tavern, is right off of Commonwealth Ave on the way to Fenway. It is much more chic on the inside with exposed brick and rough stone. The lighting is perfect and there are beautiful outdoor seats with fairy light-lit trees. It would make HGTV so happy!! The draught beer choices are nice, but the food IS GOURMET! My husband had the Chipotle Meatloaf Burger and I had the most gourmet Meatball Sub on the planet! He had rosemary potatoes on the side, and I had the street corn salad. That Meatball sub was on a sourdough ciabatta-kinda hoagie. Deeeeelish! Our server, Devin (I think), was so sweet and kind, super fast. His movements were so graceful and he never stopped smiling. We will be back for him AND the food and beer.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, but it is a 3-star review for now. The bartenders here are very nice and friendly. It is a neighborhood bar, as many people come here after the Red Sox game. It is clear that some patrons are regulars here. I actually tried a variety of things here: 1. cider $7 (nothing special, just beer) 2. nachos $10 (no... see below) 3. margherita pizza (decent!) 4. deviled eggs (not bad) 5. Aviation cocktail $12 (i should have picked something else) My main problem is the nachos that I ordered. I guess I should have read the description more carefully. However, when I order nachos from a local/neighborhood bar, I expect sour cream and black beans, lots of them. The one that I got from here had these ingredients: queso, black bean & corn salsa (barely any), lettuce (too much lettuce), tomato (not enough), cilantro, chimichurri, and crema (not sour cream?). I am not sure what kind of sour cream they used, but it was not to my liking or what you expect from nachos...? I picked through my nachos plate and only ate half of it. And for the people who know me, they know this is almost like never happens. I rarely eat lettuce, and I finished all the lettuce in my bowl because it is more edible than the crema in my bowl. It offers food happy hour, so hooray! You should still come here as it is a cool place to hang out, but perhaps avoid ordering the nachos?

Yelp
First Night in Boston needed a great place to grab some good food and a beverage. The Corner Taven is exactly that legit good grub and great bar! We enjoyed the dining outside. Service was excellent, and pricing was well within reason. The bottom line good service and food are delicious.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night. I like the vibes of this underground Bostonian bar. I suggest calling ahead of time and getting on the waitlist as this place can get busy. I called around 8pm and it was a 30-40 min wait. Don't remember seeing an extra available table for the 90 mins we were there. Service was very nice and attentive. We got a couple beers, the meatloaf burger with the pesto pasta salad, and Memphis bbq wings. Beer selection for draft/cans/bottles were solid. Seems like cocktails would be great as well. Meatloaf burger was surprisingly good. I don't typically like meatloaf, but the sauces made the burger very tasty. The wings had a couple different flavors to choose from. We opted for the Memphis bbq dry-rub because we don't see that on menus often. They were decent, but personally a little too salty for me. The order came with celery and ranch sauce, so those were good chasers to balance out the amount of flavor. Overall, I had a good time at this warm neighborhood pub
google avatar

A G.

Yelp
Really cozy bar in the Back Bay. Could imagine how fun this place would be on a Friday night. Service was so so and the pizza was below average. Like a frozen pie they flipped into the oven and sprinkled some basil on top. Will come back- but not for the "Bar Pizza".
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
Food is as good as the drinks which are as good as the amazing staff. One of my favorite spots in Boston!

Rose M.

Yelp
The corner tavern; as the name suggests, is a local bar situated on the corner of Marlborough and Comm Ave. It's warm and inviting, with excellent food, and a great staff. I go here often with friends for a quick drink and bite to eat. This most recent year I spent NYE at the Corner Tavern and they brought around champagne for everyone at midnight.
google avatar

Kelly Y.

Yelp
Great little neighborhood spot. Friendly staff with yummy sandwiches and delicious tomato soup!

Yelp
Nice cozy place, good atmosphere to watch sports! Good food and good service . Pizza and the meatball sandwich are good bets.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Interesting beer selection- bartender was very knowledgeable! I had chicken wrap and hubby had meatloaf burger - the roll for that sandwich rocked. Small place but had 6 well placed TVs to watch games Clean, friendly neighborhood bar

Patrick M.

Yelp
Hidden dive bar in close proximity to the end of Newbury. A/C cranked on a hot day which is much appreciated. Don't come here if you're in a pinch, food takes a good while. Although, the food is pretty tasty so I'd come again if I wasn't in a hurry. Highly recommend the Chicken Pesto Melt
google avatar

Caz P.

Yelp
Quaint Local bar literally located on a Corner... Standard Fares- their Jukebox was my favorite feature.

Yelp
Plain and simple, I'm a fan. I've now visited corner tavern several times and never have I left unsatisfied. Normally when someone speaks of the back bay neighborhood, imaginary dollar signs float across your eyes. For us common folk, nothing beats a lunch special. As far as lunch specials go, no one beats Corner Tavern. With options more affordable than a fast food joint at and ten times the quality, this is an unmatched value. A couple things I love: 1. It's never really that populated during the daytime hours 2. Did I mention the specials? 3. A basement restaurant yet still a nice view of back bay in the background. Not that I needed the view, you had me at basement.... 4. Great food quality in general. Many options to choose from: sandwiches to pastas to flatbreads, soups, salads to make a few. The number one reason to love Corner tavern?? The meatloaf!! Previously served as a sandwich, now being offered as the meatloaf burger(with bacon, lettuce, and pickles). This is by far the best item on the menu and worth the trip alone.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
Super weird. 5 of us were hanging out minding our own business at a side table. Touched the low-hanging lamp over our table while talking. Out of nowhere, crazy-eyed guy came over asking if we'd be ok touching stuff at his house. Wasn't sure what that meant so he said he'll get a bouncer to make us leave. I asked the bouncer if he knew why he was kicking us out and he says it didn't matter, he had to follow instruction. Still have no idea what happened but obviously some power-tripping employees. Go to another bar.
google avatar

Love J.

Yelp
Love this place. They're Boston-nice.....mean but nice. They have really good food, love their pretzels and pork tacos. The nachos are really good too.
google avatar

Matthew H.

Yelp
if you come here please do yourself a favor and get the chipotle glazed meatloaf burger. I never would of thought meatloaf would go well as a burger but it's amazing. 10/10 would recommend and great ambiance inside too.
google avatar

Kim M.

Yelp
This is a great, semi-hidden spot for drinks (solid variety) with some low key damn good food. Meatballs, French onion soup, & all the burgers come with your choice of side and you'll be regretting if you pass on the pasta salad. It's pretty much a second entree portion of great pasta (dunno if fusilli is the standard but that's what ours was) in a tasty pesto. And a must get is the tots. You can't go wrong with this spot. Not meant for too large of a group as it's pretty narrow/cozy on the inside.
google avatar

Yishai M.

Yelp
Places like this shouldn't be like spotting a unicorn drinking star dust at an desert oasis - but thanks to a steady drip of closures, it's can be hard to find anything that isn't a pretentious, shiny clean, soulless, quinoa-laden hellscape in the Boston restaurant and bar scene. Love this place. I actually had friends that lived in this building many, many years ago and I know it's been a few different places over time. Happy to report that Corner Tavern is my favorite of it's various incarnations. Great vibe, cozy, actually has personality. You look out the windows and see the back bay buildings while enjoying great service, reasonably priced and tasty food. Truly is more (fictional Boston bar on TV) than the actual one, even if they don't know my name.

Rich S.

Yelp
Every now and then my travels take me to some real nice places and Boston's Back Bay is definitely one of them. Boat load of restaurant and bar choices on the main drags. However, if you are like me, you know the best establishments are off the beaten path. My first two nights here I visited the Corner Tavern. Built as the last neighborhood tavern in the back bay it did not disappoint. Atmosphere, service and food were outstanding. Both nights met some good people and had some great conversations. (2) Donovan's and Adam both made perfect Manhattans. Night 1 - Brisket tacos were fantastic. Night 2 a Meatball skillet was simply unbelievable. Meatballs were just like Mom made. Could not be happier. Highly recommend.

Kelly M.

Yelp
We walked into an empty restaurant w exception of 1 patron at the bar. Nobody to be seen that worked there. When the bartender finally came out I asked "should we order from the bar or will we have a waitress?" His response "what, you've only waited like 20 seconds" He was rude every second of our meal. We cashed out and we're waiting for our Lyft -I saw a stack of chairs and pulled one off the top to sit in while we waited - he comes outside and says "you need to get up, I need to lock those chairs". This young man should not be in the hospitality industry.
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
The best neighborhood bar in Back Bay. Definitely worth stopping in for a bite or a beverage if you are in town. The menu features creative takes on bar classics and ranges from light snacks to full on meals. The pretzels are a great way to get your meal started and the club sandwich is another highlight. They also do an outstanding job of keeping their drink menu fresh and often have hard to find beers from all over New England. The menu is never the same two visits in a row. The service is also friendly and welcoming. They're quick to strike up conversation or give an honest recommendation. They are particularly attentive and receptive when it comes to changing the TVs around in order to find whatever game it is you may want to watch. As an out of town sports fan this little bit of customer service goes a long way in showing just how much they care about their customers' experience. All in all, great spot that should definitely be your first stop if you're in town and looking for a casual dinner and drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
I came with some friends after work, and luckily we got a table before they got too crowded. For drinks I got the pamona royale and the blackberry smash, both were fruity, refreshing drinks perfect for the summer. We split the tater tots which was very good. For entree I got the brisket tacos. The brisket was a bit dry but it was well flavored.

Yelp
The Corner Tavern is like stepping back in time to when a local corner pub would serve all your purposes and you would have a great experience a great time and make new friends. The corner Tavern is located on the corner of Marlborough Street and Mass Ave. Parking is almost impossible, but you may get lucky on Mass Ave and get a meter. If you're lucky enough the time limit is two hours. Luckily this is enough time to enjoy some of the hearty food and grab a drink. My buddy and I stopped in here and we utilized that two hours to the fullest. As we walked down into the basement you know you were in a Bostonian bar it looks as if the bar has been there for at least 50 or 100 years great wood detail old photos of Boston exposed brick everything you want for a Boston bar experience. The venue is not large but they do have about 15 seats at the bar and an array of tables. We opted for the bar seating. They have about six or seven beers on tap they come out ice cold. They have a great selection on the menu we decided to grab a few grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato bisque. This was a great decision you can mix-and-match about four or five cheese selections, multiple bread selections and the sandwiches are grilled to perfection. The bisque was the right texture and the right amount to go with a sandwich for dipping and tasted fantastic!! I'll definitely go back again just to grab a grilled cheese. Hope you make it to the corner tavern and good luck with the parking.

Yelp
I came here for drinks on a Wednesday night. The bar is located below street level but is pretty easy to find if you look out for the brightly lit signs with its name. They have a pretty standard drink menu with a good selection of draft and bottled beer and cocktails. Prices were pretty standard ($4.50-$7 for beers and $11 for cocktails). I tried the full sail session lager ($6) and my partner had the down east cider ($7), both of which were quite good. They used to have $4 shot specials which they are no longer doing. The staff were friendly and service was good (although it was a slow weekday evening; I'm sure this place fills up on the weekends). We didn't try the food but from the menu, they have happy hour from 4-6pm ish with $5 appetizers, and a late night menu that starts around 11pm.

Yelp
Not Bad We went to The Corner Tavern for a couple drinks and were the only patrons for awhile. It was early, however, and some others came in shortly after. We enjoyed our drinks and conversation with the "Bar Keep" and others. We were given plenty of information about where to go and what to see. I would have loved to have stayed longer, but we had to get back to our son. Very nice atmosphere and place to relax. We tried a pizza, it was ok at best. Thanks

Yelp
GREAT neighborhood bar in quiet part of town. Wasn't sure it was opened at first...go downtime steps and make sure. It was a quiet Sunday when we went but loved the vibe and the TACOS were great and the salad was huge!

Daniel B.

Yelp
What a great atmosphere. Possibly one of the best bars in Boston to kick back with friends and meet strangers. More Cheers than the Cheers by the Common. We need more bars like this in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Cheryl K.

Yelp
Found this hidden gem while visiting from out of town. Staff is great and very helpful! Just a short walk from Fenway park -- with better prices & quality of food then the bars right next to the game! Beautiful experience & for those wondering yes it has a great covid safe vibe.
