Is Chicago Experiencing an Urban Foraging Renaissance? | Eater Chicago

"Near the Costco in Pilsen I learned that Sacha Lusk has used that area as a foraging ground for lamb’s quarters—an edible plant with a dusty white coating on its leaves—which also served as a camping site for a houseless community; she was left sad and feeling powerless after hearing a tech giant plans to replace those spaces with a new building." - Xuandi Wang

Absolutely love Costco. From the cheap gas prices on Top Tier fuel, the Pharmacy, the Optical Department, and everything else in the store, it is a great place to shop and save. And don't forget the food court, home of The Imfamous Costco $1.50 hot dog combo 😋

Whenever I go to Costco I’m like a kid in a candy shop. They always have fresh stuff and ready to eat food. Every time I go there they got new stuff that I like to try. My favorite section is definitely the grab and go. When I went there I got their honey mango passion fruit tea that I tried for the first time and it was so delicious. This is literally the place to go if you wanna buy your groceries in bulk at a lower price.

Yes, I admit I'm part of the Costco "cult" and maybe I'm a little too in "love" with this company because often when I travel to other states (or countries!) I check out the local Costco to see what items they carry that I can't get at my local store. While I agree they do stock a lot of unhealthy processed foods, over the last few years they are catching on that people like me don't want all the added sugars and additives you can't pronounce, so I feel there are more "clean" packaged foods to choose from now. The fresh produce is generally very good and you just can't beat the price on staples like Greek yogurt, eggs, and packaged nuts. Plus their return policy is so easy it makes trying new products stress free because if you don't like it or don't think it's worth the value you simply get a credit back on your credit card.

A trip to Costco is about so much more than just buying stuff. It's about the time with my family just enjoying a relaxing walk and looking around. The food is amazing (shout-out to the chicken bakes), and the prices are generally cheaper than a typical store. The Enfield Costco is my favorite. Love going and will continue to shop there until I move out of the area.

Costco in West Springfield is truly a one-stop shop during the holiday season, offering an exceptional experience for shoppers preparing for festivities. As you step inside, you’re greeted by an incredible variety of high-quality products at competitive prices, making it a haven for holiday preparations. One standout feature this time of year is the extensive selection of nuts and dried fruits, perfect for creating your own trail mix or adding a touch of natural sweetness to your holiday dishes. Whether you're looking for premium almonds, cashews, walnuts, or an assortment of dried fruits, Costco has you covered with bulk options that ensure great value and freshness. What truly sets this Costco apart during the holiday rush is its efficiency. Every register is open to accommodate the increased demand, keeping checkout lines moving smoothly. It's a relief to see how well-organized the staff is, especially when shopping on busy days. The effort to meet holiday demand is evident and appreciated. One of the most exciting offerings this season is their Thanksgiving meal kit—a ready-to-go oven package that includes everything you need for a traditional feast. With green beans, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and turkey, it's a lifesaver for those looking to enjoy a hassle-free holiday dinner. It's a thoughtful addition that underscores Costco's commitment to convenience and quality for its customers. In summary, Costco West Springfield excels in meeting holiday needs with its vast selection, unbeatable prices, and thoughtful seasonal offerings. Google
Absolutely the best Costco! The staff here are always kind, polite, and professional, which makes shopping a pleasure. Products are fresh, shelves are well-stocked, and I’ve never seen expired items. I’m very happy with this location and highly recommend it to everyone!

Google
Some lady at the door busted my chops this morning for trying to walk in one minute early and proceeded to make me walk all the way back out of the store. I could understand if it was much earlier but that is insane. I understand the executive club or whatever that membership is is supposed to get early shopping hours but by the time I turned back around and looked at my watch it was 10:00.

BW A.

Google
Easily the worst Costco I have ever been to. The layout doesn't work at all with member services right at the door which blocks entrance and creates a large group of waiting people. Why isn't scan and go available to keep the lines lower? So many opportunities for a better experience. The staff is great, the store just needs a new layout and considering the population a bigger store or another in the area.

Mike J.

Yelp
My hearing aid consultant, Douglas Wallace, did a superb job fitting me for new hearing aids. I have suffered adapting to them for almost 30 years. My new aids sound natural and more importantly are comfortable in my ears. I am so pleased and comfortable with them and appreciate the terrific expertise of Douglas. M Jacobson

Heather L.

Yelp
Let me preface this with: I have PTSD I had a cashier sneak up on me and start rooting through my reusable shopping bags. Then I was stopped at the door by a mgr for the same reason(!) after paying, while trying to assist them with their apparent issue. If memory serves, customer service associates are not ACTUALLY supposed to touch personal items in in your cart!

Yelp
I love this Coscto! It's so conveniently located for us between Bradley Hartford Int airport and our destination in Southern Vermont. Always clean and orderly which makes for hitting all the aisles safely and quickly. I would have given 5 stars but this is the second time I've had no toilet tissue in the ladies room stall! Ugh! Sorry no pics...but come on, it's a Costco!

Solara A.

Yelp
I had a terrible experience at this Costco location. The workers were disrespectful and unresponsive, and I was unable to complete my payment. I strongly advise against visiting this location. Additionally, the prices were high, and I noticed that Costco was selling products under their own label that seemed to be identical to other brand-name products. This is not acceptable behavior, and it left a bad taste in my mouth! It is frustrating that only the cardholder can update the payment method, even for something as simple as redeeming points. To save you some time don't go to this store just go to Aldi's down the street.
google avatar

Kerry P.

Yelp
This Costco is dangerous - like in violation of fire marshal law dangerous. They have closed all but one access to the exit so you have to line up and block the main aisle to pay and exit. The line goes all the way to the back of the store. The only other way out is through the entrance which is filled with people trying to get in. I have been a loyal Costco member but this is not a store I'm returning to even though it's the only one for miles.

Sue M.

Yelp
It is convenient that their handicap carts are big in size. It is always clean and neat. I do not see why they have to check a card when you walk in. You cannot purchase anything until you check out and they see card then. I enjoy this store.

Josh K.

Yelp
Costco is awesome, as all members know. West Springfield is more chaotic than Enfield, but it has wine and a better setup for gas.
google avatar

Joseph B.

Yelp
How could you ever complain about this fine establishment. 1.50 hot dog and soda and the CEO said that will never change. BEST berry sundaes. Best STAFF.

Jacquey Z.

Yelp
My mom came home with 2 burnt rotisserie chickens. She said all chickens were cooked black. She picked two best one. Meat had burnt taste even with skin peeled. It's a shame that the store chose to sell these.
google avatar

Kenneth L.

Yelp
Would not get a star if that was a choice! How many times does a staff have to see a membership card? They check it right before you walk into the store. Why the need to see it again at check out. Show the guy he a f**k**g ahole

Frank B.

Yelp
I have nothing but praise for Costco, but the Citibank credit card they use is another thing entirely. About 6 months ago a Citibank robot told me it was time to change my password. So I did that. Thank you, said their robot, that's a good new password, and promptly refused to accept it. This has been going on month after month, & so I've had to pay by phone. Whatever the problem is, even a Citibank tech couldn't solve it, their website is so messed up. So could we have a different credit card company, please, Costco?

Yahweh S.

Yelp
"I don't think we should be doing that here," said the employee as I took a lightly hit my Juul. "Is there a sign which says I cannot vape?" He said nothing. So I went to another employee across from me to ask him. The previous employee interrupted saying why are you confirming as if he's the sole arbiter of the establishment. I spoke to a manager and what was said he's not wrong. I'm done with this bulky store and going to Whole Foods as my sole grocery shopping destination

Yelp
I think we all know Costco has a great business model. They treat their customers and employees well. We've been coming to this location for a few years and I'm finally leaving a review because.... they now also carry AÇAÍ BOWLS in the food court. The tire center guys are also great. I had a flat once and the guy was nice enough to come out and take a look and help me. They also have a wide range of food items including korean food products which is extremely convenient for me and my family. I know there is a Costco location in new Britain as well but that one doesn't have a photo center. I think the enfield location is a little better as they have all the Costco services. Now I just need them to do oil changes here (wishful thinking).

Scary H.

Yelp
Staff extremely friendly and there was a quick checkout line. Plus the food is cheap and good!!!

Yelp
What's not to love about Costco! I'm from Los Angeles and it seems like every time I go to a new place, one of the first things to do, is find the nearest Costco! This location was up to par with all the other ones I've been to. It's large, spacious, lots of parking, workers are friendly/polite, and you can get all your favorite items. I was in a bit of a hurry this time, so I only got bananas, two boxes of cereal (have you tried the Oatmeal Squares? very good), lunch meat combination, and sea salt potato chips. Yea! Prices are about the same as other locations in California. Costco is excellent! TIP: No gas station at this location. Xie Xie!!
google avatar

Shayla M.

Yelp
Like all other Costcos-they have everything you needs and didnt know you needed at low prices and bulk amounts! A true value for families. The staff is friendly, options are plentiful, samples galore, and building is clean! I really enjoy their produce section, as well as their cleaning products and bottled water deals! Me and my husband have also used the optic center inside which we found to be tiny but friendly and accommodating. A pleasent exsperience. On the way out we love to enjoy a dirty cheap meal of long hotdogs and fountains drinks! They do need to restoke the condient section much, MUCH more frequently. I learned early on to enjoy a plain hotdog because the condiment section is usually slim pickings. Overall the store is what you would exspect.

Yelp
Burnt Chicken Bake! Yuk! We peeled away the burnt layer. I would think they could have taken the time to adjust the ovens by this hour. I was wrong!

Yelp
Just wanted to shout out Jay, the checkout girl today 12-Jan-2019 around 12:30 who was super nice and chill and I didn't know you needed the card before starting the checkout process and my friend was grabbing one last thing and Jay was like "don't worry about it, it's all good," which was the best because Costco at noon on a Saturday is a stressful / busy place but she was super nice and deserves a shout out! :) Also, we couldn't find pesto and some other lady went and found it for us and she was super nice, but I didn't see her name tag, but shout out to the pesto-getter too!
google avatar

Anne D.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in at Costco early one Saturday morning. We were pleased and surprised that the 1st hour was dedicated to seniors. What a pleasure shopping in a quiet store. The checkout area was spotless as were the bathrooms. What a nice experience! Great job!!
google avatar

James D.

Yelp
Wholesale club Best in Class! None of the others come close. I would have given a 5 star if I didn't have to drive an hour and a half from Albany NY to Springfield Mass. (Hint) Albany currently an opportunity waiting!
google avatar

Melly M.

Yelp
Great store Great return policy Free samples Hot food for cheap It's the better box store compared to BJ's
google avatar

Carlos A.

Yelp
I love Costco. Great prices on bulk items as well as clothes, electronics, alcohol etc. You can't miss the $1.50 hot dogs. A big plus from me for paying their employees a fair wage (unlike Wal Mart).
google avatar

Allie J.

Yelp
Employees will touch your food and be catty when you say you're undergoing treatment for cancer and are immunocompromised and don't want the food. That's gross, first of all, but to be mean about life or death health complications? Really?

Richard K.

Yelp
Recently I visited the eyeglass department in West Springfield to have two eyeglass prescriptions filled. I was assisted by a great service person, Lisa, who made my visit a real pleasure. Lisa was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. She led me through the process so efficiently... and was SO UNDERSTANDING when I encountered a problem with my new debit card. Thank you, COSTCO, for having people like Lisa ready to assist customers ! Richard Klett

Judy T.

Yelp
We have been shopping at Costco's for many years and it has been a very pleasurable experience. We have found great Christmas gifts, birthday gifts and great plants! This has been a wonderful place to shop for the entire house hold items and food. We love this place for sure!

Sharon K.

Yelp
I had to return a laptop computer that had died after 11 months. I spoke with Evelyn and she looked up all my records. She was very patient with me - I was rather upset that the computer had died so suddenly, but she assured me that Costco would stand by their product! I was able to get a refund to purchase a new computer. The customer service at the Costco in West Springfield was amazing. I have told everyone I know how Costco sticks up for their customers. The store is always clean and neat too. I will continue to support this store as I feel that they supported me!
google avatar

Felicia N.

Yelp
I'm so ripped. Spend 2 hours in the store. A grocery bill easily $300. Wait in line. But they refuse us because my disabled grandmother wasn't in the store with us. No apology. No explanation. Nothing.literally escorted out of the store. Because our 90 yr old grandmother couldn't come out in this heat today. What the hell is wrong with this place. The membership is that important to them that we can't shop for our grandmother. Unbelievable. Best believe. Never will come back. We come here pretty often an never a problem. Except today. Unreal.
google avatar

Sky A.

Yelp
Costco is the best place to shop if you want looooooooooooooooooooooooooots of food and or you own a business, but to shop there you have to buy a membership for like 60 bucks overall 5/5
google avatar

Julia G.

Yelp
We've been Costco members for as long as the West Springfield,MA warehouse was opened. Bakery goods are fine: bagels, french bread, iced cakes, etc. affordable and delicious. Rotisserie chickens are The Best! Best Kept Secret: Costco employees are excellent! Always happy to help find something you can't find.
google avatar

Brandon J.

Yelp
Having been to dozens if Costco's in the past I would say this one holds true to the Great Experience that Keeps it's shoppers Hooked! BUSY:Weekends at this Establishment seem to often be more crowded so just a heads up, it can get Packed at Times! QUALITY: Other then that Merchandise available is Amazing Quality at Unbeatable Prices, You can always feel confident buying their trademark brand "Kirkland" it really is Grade A merchandise. CUSTOMER SERVICE: The Opposite of Wal-Mart...Enough Said!! COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITY: Proud to say Costco does Carry Plenty of Products that are Made/Manufactured in the USA which to Myself and many means something! They also pay their employees a LIVING wage and provide them Great Benefits (commonly known). They also Make Great efforts to source as much product locally as possible (you see this evident when you visit Costco's across the country) Bottom Line? Great Quality, Unbeatable Value, and. Socially & Community Friendly compared to most Large Grocery Chains!
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
You always have great prices on clothes deli, bakery, oh and on my glasses. You are wonderful.
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
I'm going to give these boys a five star as it's pretty well squared away. It's always packed no matter what day you come and the parking can be a pain in the butt but that's not really their fault as they have a giant lot. Even their little snack bar is go although sometimes the tables aren't clean well enough again with the amount of people it's gotta be a difficult task to stay on top of. Navigating through the aisles when it's busy can be a bear as most folk take up the entire aisle and don't seem to care.
google avatar

Ron H.

Yelp
The lines in this store every time I visit are in to aisle and congested all the time !!! They honestly need to rethink their checkout system because it doesn't work for the benefit of the customer and their time !
google avatar

Jeffrey G.

Yelp
Ah...the store I love to hate, and continue to go back to, again and again. Home to two of the most stupid jobs in America. 1. The person at the front of the store, making sure you have a membership card. Wouldn't a sign work? C'Mon.... I would much rather have the card checker turn into a store wanderer, answering questions for me like is the pallet that is 3 stories up coming down soon? It looks like something I might be interested in. Why wouldn't I love a wifi enabled, photo capturing, illuminated bird bath with fountain??? 2. The person at the exit, who draws a line on your receipt for you with a sharpie. What in gods name is this good for, except slowing exit traffic? Trust me, no matter how slow you make me exit the store, I am not going to buy a garage door, or central air from Costco. DRIVES me crazy. Given today's security means, this is completely unnecessary. Nothing says thanks' for coming and please come again like being treated as a criminal. Somehow I still manage to renew my annual membership, convinced that it makes sense to buy toilet paper, paper towels, and tissues in a quantity that must have involved my very own acre of forest.

F T.

Yelp
Do NOT order items like Televisions from Costco if they are to be delivered! Their internal logistics department is in total chaos, their drivers don't show up for work and they are unable to provide a delivery date. My delivery has been rescheduled FOUR times now and I still don't know when it will show up! I've spent hours on hold trying unsuccessfully to get a delivery scheduled. Go somewhere else!!!
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
Having new tires installed. Friendly service. Knowledgeable customer service. They told it would take 45 minutes to install. No hassles.
google avatar

Matt F.

Yelp
The medjool dates are more expensive here than at Waltham. Even the costco in New York City holds the same price. And here is more expensive. Same for the towels. So disappointed.
google avatar

Butch M.

Yelp
Love Costco. Prices, items, selection, $1.50 polish dog n soda combo! But this location is HORRIBLE. Always full of people, long lines, no room. Did I mention how rude the customers at this location are?? We live in town and drive all the way to Enfield, CT and pay higher taxes to go to a store with more room and less people. They need to open another Costco north of here, maybe Northampton or Hadley. You can't beat their warranty or return policy The parking lot and entrance/exit to the building make it a logistical nightmare, especially since they added the liquor store. Dangerous and causes traffic issues cause lazy people park right up front blocking everything. Lot is the size of 4 football fields, but these tools feel entitled to put their cars anywhere
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
For the longest time, this was my primary Costco. My mom or dad would take us out here, and there'd always be a method to the general madness: First, go over to the computer games. Because I mean, who doesn't like computer games? Sometimes we'd get one, but usually nope. Then over to the books and videos/DVDs/video games. We'd look around again, amazed at the wonder that was Costco's selection. Finally, it would be that food-based walk around the store, where the oversized bags and boxes of various things we'd usually get at supermarkets would amaze us, surprising us with the amount of crap one could get. After we paid, we'd sometimes get hot dogs at the hotdog place built in. It was a kosher hot dog place, so the dogs were big and good. Not "random hot dog stand outside Fenway at 1 AM good", but still good. Costco is a decent enough place. They're basically the same everywhere, and you need a membership to shop. But if you have a car and it's worth it, it can do a lot of good.

Yelp
I'm watching the beautiful plasma TV I recently bought at Costco. Thank you Costco for having the good prices and free delivery. Oh and for the XL sized hummus. I go through those bad boys like crazy. Now if you would only fix your hours. Closing at 6pm on the weeknd? Boo!

Yelp
This review is for the PHARMACY. I'm not a Costco member, but I've been tempted to become one for many reasons (including their awesome chocolate/chia seed granola/pumpkin seed trail mix). Since moving to Western Mass, I needed a pharmacy both for myself and my dog. I thought Wal*Mart would be cheapest, but when I went to fill the vet Rx, it was almost $60 for the single prescription. The vet recommended I check Costco. The great thing is, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A MEMBER TO USE THE COSTCO PHARMACY. And their price for my dog's prescription is only $11. When I asked the pharmacist, he said that sometimes they work with big pharma companies to negotiate better prices, and then pass the savings on to us. I've never had a complaint about refilling prescriptions here: they are pretty quick and efficient. Plus, you get to stop by the cafe and get $1.50 hot dog and soda combo! A win-win right there. The parking lot is sometimes kinda crazy to drive or even walk in. People need to slow down!

Tom B.

Yelp
Be aware that senior hours on Monday begin at 8:30 am, not 8:00 am as posted on their website. The store is aware of this, but no changes have been made on the website. Oh, call their local phone number and you are directed to the website for store hours including senior hours. NO FUN SITTING IN YOUR CAR FOR 30 MINUTES DUE TO INCOMPETENCY OR JUST NOT CARING!!!!!
google avatar

Maci M.

Yelp
You can't beat their prices, customer service, or quality in the products! They'll forever have my membership

Rob K.

Yelp
Costco as a company 10-star as I've gone to 15 different ones all over the country. Costco West Springfield: 1-2 star WHY? Try to avoid the returns lady who is in her late 40's with blonde hair that is trying to hide the gray.... She either hates her job, or she does not understand the returns policy at Costco. She will grill you and ask for a receipt because I do not think she knows HOW to look up a receipt or she wants to do as little work as possible. Then she'll ask you for the packaging. Then she'll nastily say without a receipt I really can't help you. I'm going to corporate. But in the meantime, either avoid the "Returns Nazi" or go to Enfield, CT store. I am going to start going there myself as there are no questions asked...

Tara C.

Yelp
I felt like I was in a very depressed area. Not a friendly person who worked there except when we grabbed take out pizza.

Yelp
This review concerns the TIRE CENTER. We needed tires for our Jetta, amongst other things. We recently moved up this way from Long Island, where there are 3 Costco tire centers close by. I knew what brand tires I wanted, so we made the 60+ mile trek to this location. The did not have 2 matching tires in stock I could use, and my size is still a common size. Now, I just retired from working for one of their tire suppliers back on Long Island, and have over 37 years in the tire industry. Every Costco in our service area could get s minimum of 3 daily deliveries during the week. Not only would the counterman not see if he could get the tires for that day, he would not even check availability. Politely, though.. with a sh*t eating phoney grin on his face. See, I know how their ordering process works, and it would have taken 2 minutes to get an answer. I am NOT renewing my Costco membership (not traveling all that way anymore), but this solidified my decision. We went to the Walmart tire center in Hudson, were treated really nicely by the young Lady at the counter, and had the tires on the car the next morning. Costco....DONE!

Yelp
I had to drop my rating because of the discontinuation of Healthy Choice ice cream bars. The organic bars have no flavor, and I have stopped buying them. I am prediabetic, and the original bars were the highlight of my day. How about offering both forms of Healthy Choice bars? It could be a win-win solution. Thank you.

Andy B.

Yelp
shopping west springfield costco is a pleasure. the staff is helpful and friendly and the return policy is second to none.

Yelp
Horrendous parking lot setup with cars driving within feet of the door which seemed extremely dangerous. Parking lot was full of trash. Definitely not the same caliber of employee and shopper as seen in the Enfield store. This is the Price Rite of Costco's. Although, they do have a Costco liquor store. Store was chaotic, but that's any Costco on a weekend. I usually go to the Enfield store which is cleaner and bigger, but decided to try the West Springfield store today. Was not impressed with this Costco, and might never return.
