For His Next Move, an Acclaimed SF Chef Takes Retirement Home Dining to a Luxury Level | Eater SF

"Opening in March 2022 on Cathedral Hill, this 208-unit luxury senior living complex at 1001 Van Ness Avenue is the first Coterie in San Francisco and a partnership between Related and Atria; it charges between $8,000 and $25,000 per month and offers amenities like chauffeurs, onsite hair salons, and Mayo Clinic–curated fitness centers. The development is building a tightly curated fine-dining program accessible only to residents and their guests, with a farm-to-table menu, Champagne brunches, chef pop-ups, and a star-backed bar. Executive chef David Lawrence—recruited to shape the dining—will steer a new American bistro-style program using the best seasonal ingredients from around the world, with a rotating prix fixe nightly alongside more cafeteria-like, table-served options (wok station, burgers, grilled steaks) and a smaller on-floor restaurant serving San Francisco favorites like cioppino, clam chowder, and crab Louie for breakfast and lunch; a full room-service menu will also be available. The wine program is curated by master sommelier Emmanuel Kemiji, who will feature some of his own wines and partner with Lawrence on winemaker dinners, and Lawrence says he’s particularly excited to serve a seafood bouillabaisse; the stated aim is to offer residents meals equivalent to any fine dining experience in San Francisco." - Clair Lorell

Went on a scouting mission to Coterie cathedral hill for my parents, who are getting up there in age… and wow. The facilities are amazing. I’ve got a friend who parents live here that recommended it to us, but didn’t really expect it to be so nice. Gym, had everything you could want, views of downtown everywhere, and the common rooms were done to the nines. The folks running the facility were so nice, and really went out of their way to make us feel welcome. We chatted with a couple of the residents and they gushed about the staff, which I took a took as a huge positive. We tried a meal at one of the dining rooms, and it felt just like we were out at a nice restaurant. Food was quite good, and it looked like the residents were enjoying themselves. Best part, through were the rooms. Really nice, and again those views. I don’t have the final say for my folks, but this is where I want to be.

I recently visited my dear friend and from what she has told me about this facility and the pictures that she has shared with me, I am absolutely disgusted. Her sinuses were been acting up and she did a little bit of investigating to find out why her sinuses were acting up. She checked her furnace too since she saw that other residents had dirty filters from over two years ago, from some of the employees finally changing out a few filters. She was able to get a few other photos from other residents. Besides the filters being as bad as they are I also noticed the floors in the main dining room be severely scratched and poorly maintained. She told me that a friend of hers that lives within the facility was having issues with her outlet always causing the breaker to trip every morning. She tried to get it fixed multiple times by the maintenance department and requested that electrician came out to check on it by the maintenance manager, whose name is Mathew Rad, told her that she was just that she was just causing issues. She has told me that the elevators constantly are having issues one time she got stuck in an elevator and was stuck for over an hour. I’m very disappointed with this facility and the way it treats it’s residence.

Coterie is a high-end community in every sense. It's well managed with higher-end amenities. Of course I wish it were cheaper, but you get what you pay for. The staff is excellent, esp a shout out to their assistant GM. Five stars all around.

Coterie Cathedral Hill is truly exceptional. The community feels elevated yet welcoming, with every detail clearly designed to support both comfort and dignity. The sales director was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and thoughtful throughout the entire process, making what could have been overwhelming feel smooth and reassuring.

Coterie is a stunning assisted living community. The rooms are comfortable and gorgeous, and the amenities (gym, pool, culinary experience) are the best you can ask for. The staff is very professional, attentive, and friendly, especially Armando Pardo. Coterie also throws the best parties for all occasions for their residents.

I toured the facility with Amanda and she gave a thorough overview of Coterie and everything they have to offer. The rooms are beautifully designed and the amenities are fabulous. The entire team is warm and friendly and all of the residents I interacted with had a real sense of community.
