Counter Culture Cafe - Review - Baca - Santa Fe - The Infatuation

"Counter Culture is solid for breakfast or getting work done, but we prefer coming by for a casual solo lunch. That’s a meal best spent with the carne asada sandwich slathered with lime-serrano aioli and a mountain of crispy haystack fries. If you bring a group of friends, split one of the giant cinnamon rolls out on the sunflower-filled patio when the weather’s nice. Meanwhile, the space inside feels like a cross between a New York deli and ‘90s internet cafe, thanks to chalkboard menus, local art hung all around, and people typing away on their computers." - Nina Katz

Delicious little counter service spot tucked beyond the popular streets. The small parking lot was packed, which was a good sign to us. I picked this place because of vegetarian options. They have a small menu but we didn’t have trouble choosing what to eat. I had the Asian platter with spring rolls and noodles-delicious! My partner had a bowl of salmon curry soup which was also super yummy! Inside the restaurant was rather warm so we opted for the front patio. What a cute place with a great vibe. They also offered baked goods, wine and beer and coffee. It seemed like there was plenty of seating to choose from too. This would be great for a family lunch hang out. We went in a Saturday afternoon in winter and it was busy but not overly crowded. (We found parking across the street pretty easily). They accept cards but add a 3.7% fee. We spent around $25 dollars for an entree and a bowl of soup. We were very satisfied with the quality, price and overall experience.

One of the best breakfasts I’ve had in my life. Perfect balance between sweet and savory. My wife and I shared these two dishes and couldnt have been happier. The full menu looks amazing and cannot wait to go back for lunch!

Not sure what the hype is about this place, the reviews were all great but we didnt have anything special. My husband and I both got the El grande and while our over easy eggs were cooked nicely, everything lacked flavor. It was just an okay dish. We also split the cinnamon roll which was very dry. The patio is nice but sadly I don’t think we would come back.

Counter Culture has great good and a good ambiance. They have lots of seating both inside and in two outdoor areas. Some of the entrees can be quite spicy, so it's good to ask if you don't like that. The portions are generous. Get one of their huge cinnamon buns to have with your coffee or tea while you wait for them to bring you your food. It'll ruin your appetite, but it's so worth it. Oh, and I don't know when they were cash only, but they absolutely do take credit cards now.

Amazingly great food, vegan, and carnivore eats. Clean bathroom and just a remarkable staff that will take good care of their customers. The atmosphere is what greatness you can feel and bring to this gem of an eatery. I so enjoyed the steak sandwich with the bountiful of fries. Salads, sandwiches, and even more goodies. This place just astonished me and my grandchildren... yes, I brought picky eaters and a vegan on at that, such a great place to enjoy great food. Browse the menu order and get your utensils and necessities, and find a cozy table to your liking until you receive your order. It is so delicious. Enjoy.

Tuesday, August 1. 9:15 am Counter Culture is a local breakfast and lunch place that has been in Santa Fe for a long time, open 7 days a week, 8 to 3. We came for breakfast and ordered at the counter. There was no waiting in line and our food was served quickly. We sat at a picnic table on the back patio. Dogs are welcome on the outdoor patios and a little one was next to us. The patio was quiet with traffic noise in the distance but nothing that interfered with conversation. (76 dB) I ordered the Gravlox, house-cured salmon on a fresh baguette served with capers, cucumber serrano (tart and peppery, a real compliment to the arugula) and lemon dill crema on a base of mixed greens. I love salmon and this did not disappoint. All was fresh and attractive on the plate. My husband ordered the Cowboy Bowl. This was a bowlful of black beans, homefries, red and green chile topped with melted cheese, two over easy eggs (or any way you like them), two long and nicely fried strips of bacon and a flour tortilla. He enjoyed the combination of ingredients in the ample bowl and the “nice spiciness” of the dish. Though we were here for breakfast, the wide range of choices (way too many to mention here) for breakfast (served all day) and lunch is notable. Everything from a banh mi entree to a middle eastern salad with spanakopita. And, of course, they have burgers. Our breakfasts were both around $14 and well worth the price. We have eaten here many times before and will be back here again

One of my favorite local joints in Santa Fe. The meatball sandwich is excellent and one of my favorites.

Yelp
For 7 years I wrote almost daily at Counter Culture, a table Jason stated he would add my name. FOOD is incredible and design to fashion whatever you want, whether it be pancakes with a salad, or any choice off the menu, eggs over easy with tea, coffee sits in hot canisters for your ease in refills. The food here is incredible and simple with artistry woven in each plate while one's eyes roll back in sheer pleasure with eat morsel consumed! Plenty to choose from, and the coffee is incredible with several choices, plus teas!!! This place is to "Please!" Eat in or take out ~ your desire is Counter Culture's pleasure ~ Dang I miss you Jason and your cafe and staff!! Jason Aufrichtig is the genius behind Counter Culture, he designed every portion with meticulous flawless detail to serve locals and out of state visitors, artists, writers, friends and family gather inside and the wondrous patio. I wrote an entire book here! And drank tea along with veggie dishes. Jason when in-house would visit with he warm smile; Jason and your cafe are missed terribly!! When entering to order with ease, they know your name and what your preferences are. More than accommodating, delicious food, meeting friends or sitting alone writing or crafting a piece of art. Art fills the walls from all local artist and for sale. Address: 930 Baca St #1, Santa Fe, NM 87505 Phone: (505) 995-1105 Wish I had taken some photos from that time, yet cell phones were not that developed!

Yelp
OMG! Have you ever been sad when you get a little cinnamon roll and you wished it was bigger? If you come to counter culture, your GIGANTIC cinnamon roll will be your greatest happiness! And then you can make it into French toast if you'd like! I got a Belgian waffle and crispy bacon. Perfectly crispy on the edges and soft but fully cooked in the middle. My friend got the frittata and it was perfect. It had a nice side salad with it. 2 burritos- nice size to start the morning. And last but not least our group rounded up with the Brie and fresh fruit. Baguette was perfect. You can't go wrong here!

Yelp
try as I might, I do not like this place. First, do not. Ask me for a tip when you do. Absolutely nothing to earn it. I have to get my condiments, salt and pepper, napkins, go box, and I'm expected to bus my table. Also, I'm on a roll, I ordered a tuna sandwich. No onions, and no sprouts. I get a tuna salad, but the onions are in the mix, they should've told me that in the beginning. I went back to ask about it, and they said the girl said no. You ordered tuna with no sprouts, and no tomato, and I held up the tomato on my plate. If I didn't order tomatoes what is this. Do you want anything else? Absolutely not.

Yelp
Two of us went to Counter Culture today. It was my second visit and it's a place I'd recommend. As I did last time, I ordered the Half Sandwich, Soup, AND Salad for $14. I thought that was a good price. I chose the tuna salad on whole wheat which came with lettuce, tomato, red onion, sprouts, walnut, celery, and Dijon mustard. Very tasty and quite large. I really enjoyed the fresh-tasting sprouts as well as the crunch from the celery and walnuts. I'm picky about tuna salad and this hit the spot. For my soup I ordered the vegan split pea. Hearty and something you don't see that often. The side salad with was made of lettuce, sprouts, tomato, red onions, cucumber, and carrots, I requested balsamic dressing. One tip is to order your dressing on the side as they were quite generous with it. My friend ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, salad with Cesar dressing, and clam chowder. I'm not sure how often the soup menu changes. He also mentioned a little kick to his sandwich. To drink, I had an herbal iced tea with Hibiscus and he had the Thai iced tea. And we also bought a blueberry muffin for later. We pinched off a couple of pieces while waiting for our food and we can't wait to finish it tonight. The restaurant has a very nice variety of sandwiches, several salad choices, breakfast options, as well as specialty items like spring rolls and beer battered salmon tacos. You order at the counter and they deliver the food to your table. The decor is simple and clear. Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
Did takeout from here and it was delicious. Greek salad and Asian plate very fresh. The standout was a gluten free dirt bomb. Omg, fabulous! And we aren't even gluten free but it looked so good that we had to try one. Fun ambience, good service. Nothing fancy, just good!

Yelp
Food was very tasty! Ambiance was nice too especially at the front patio with nice music playing. The service was busy and cashier didn't seem too interested in making recommendations as we were first-timers. FYI you need to get your own cutlery at the front. Would come back again for breakfast though.

Yelp
What a surprise. A little away from downtown but well worth the drive. Had breakfast here twice during our stay. Love the huevos rancheros.

Leslie P.

Yelp
I've been coming to Counter Culture for over 15 years. While the food is still very good, and the space is great, it's impossible to recommend it anymore because of the counter staff. Last five times I've experienced the same distracted, rude or downright hostile service. Utter lack of respect for customers. (And yes, I'm stupid for continuing to patonize after multiple bad experiences.) I brought guests once and regretted it due to the surly attitudes when ordering.

Yelp
Let's start this Santa Fe week off right! They accepted credit card - just need to update 'cash only'. The menu is quite vast & a cup of dark coffee seems to be alright. The vibe, that is amazing. Kids friendly & Barista are cheerful. Everyone plays their parts. A lot of patrons working on their laptop at the cafe even in the morning. I sat the front patio for the morning breeze & the price is what you'd expect for a trendy place. I am not sure, this is Hipster spot but I d come back next time. ( No hippies in the cafe as far as I know, hey this is " Counter Culture" #ykyk). Again, this is Santa Fe, NM if you feel particularly not welcome, it is not about you. Learn how to blend in first, which I know local folks here, so I ain't surprised. The SouthWestern Pride :) There is a parking lot & the small galleries in the compound!

Yelp
They are no longer cash only. Yay! I have given it another try because we loved it SO MUCH before covid. Happy to report that the staff was friendly & the food is still delicious. Love the hibiscus herbal ice tea... it IS slightly sweet but not too much for me. I am still disappointed that they continue to use Styrofoam & plastic to go containers, but I have HOPE that they will correct this. (The food is so good I seldom have Leftovers, but I won't order takeout here until they get sustainable containers.

Roxann S.

Yelp
Delicious food. Fun atmosphere. Dog friendly. I plan to make this a regular weekend outing.

Yelp
This is one of the local favorite famous for the cinnamon bun. Personally I don't like cinnamon bun so I went for their regular breakfast menu. I ordered cowboy boy. The portion is massive, it needs two person to finish. It's also very heavy with a lot of cheese, sauce and carb. Not sure if it's healthy option but it taste decent. You go to counter to order then take a number to find wherever to sit. Clean up after you finish. Self serve is pretty efficient.

Yelp
This place rocks! Totally unexpected fresh blueberry muffins. Free wifi Must check it out.

Yelp
Awesome place for breakfast or lunch. Delicious healthy, generous portions great outdoor seating.

Yelp
Food was delicious and came out quickly. Portions were huge and everything was very fresh. It was very crowded and therefore very, very loud. Not a good place to have a conversation.

KJ W.

Yelp
When I am in Santa Fe (often, just love it) Counter Culture is the breakfast go to. Portions are high and flavorful. So local. You can't duplicate this place. When you are there, hope for a remaining cinnamon roll! Whether as an appetizer:), a meal or a snack later you have to have one of these!

Yelp
Yummy brunch! The plates are STACKED. If you're super hungry, this is a great amount of food. We didn't finish our meals, and actually had our leftovers for dinner the same day. Dogs are allowed on the patio here, so that's a major win for a dog owner like me! We shared a blueberry muffin, and it tasted like a "healthy" homemade muffin...Like if you added a yogurt crumb topping, this would be perfect for me! Still good, but I would prefer a different pastry from here. I had a Greek omelette special, and it was so good! The veggies inside were fresh, the feta gave a nice zing, and the eggs were cooked nicely. The side of potatoes were flavored well. My meal also came with a lot of toast. My husband got the El Grande, and for sure it was Grande. He liked his meal.

Aileen R.

Yelp
Went on a girls trip to Santa Fe and this breakfast was by far my favorite! Got the cowboy bowl and chile was so delicious, the homemade tortilla was so fresh, and the portions were great! Also shared a cinnamon bun with the table and it was A1, and also HUGE!

Yelp
Famous local restaurant off the beaten path. On Saturdays and Wednesdays they have freshly made cinnamon buns that are out of this world, and sized to share. Seems like 1 pound but soooo good. They have an incredible menu of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items - just read more reviews to get a sense. We came for breakfast early, around 8:15 on Saturday and no sooner had we arrived the place got packed. Best to get here before 8:30. The cinnamon bun was the yummiest I've ever had, and best of all because of the healthier ingredients they use in all meals I didn't feel that heavy feeling after eating 1/3 of it. For my main breakfast dish I opted for the Huevos Rancheros. OMG I devoted the whole thing in what seemed like minutes. Christmas a must. Amazing! As a first time visitor I didn't realize that we have to get our own water and silverware. Shows just how local this place is. Highly, highly recommend to any Santa Fe visitor.

James B.

Yelp
The food is hard to beat. The patronage is eclectic. Prices are middle of the road. The atmosphere is working class. The parking lot is challenging at times. It's a lot of fun.

Patti S.

Yelp
This place has amazing food and a great vibe. My first time here, I ordered the beer battered salmon tacos. Super tasty and the sauce on top of the tacos was bursting with love. The next day, I returned and ate the best cob salad in my life. Very friendly staff and service is exceptional. Food came out fast which I really appreciate. Will be returning. After reading the reviews, next trip to Sante Fe, I'm definitely getting that cinnamon roll.
google avatar

Yelp
Must get the cinnamon roll! I had the breakfast burrito and it was okay, but would come back here just for the cinnamon roll. Quick service and counter service, cheap prices, fun atmosphere!
google avatar

Emerine C.

Yelp
I tried the tuna tacos and the asian plate and they were both delicious! The sesame noodles on the asian plate are probably my favorite of everything, so flavorful and fresh. The tacos come with lots of tuna hidden under a pile of greens dressed with an amazing sauce. This is one of my mom's favorite spots and now I see why! Healthy and delicious

Yelp
I am in love with Counter Culture's gravlox. So good. I'm basically vegan, but if you're going to stray, this gravlox is a pretty health way to do it.

Cynthia D.

Yelp
Great food and glad to have good weather to sit out back where is quieter. Look forward to returning...

Yelp
Food is real and healthy. My cappuccino hit the spot. Service was cheerful and helpful. I bought a tee shirt and the staff person went out of her way to find my size. Thanks. The ambiance is creative and all good vibes. Cool shops and studios in the same little artist's enclave.

Yelp
This place was a recommendation from a friend and it did not disappoint! Ample seating, amazing food and service. What a great way to start my vacation in Santa Fe.

Eleanore R.

Yelp
We arrived around 1:00 on Sunday thinking they might be busy.we we're prepared for a little wait. Our food came out so fast and everything was delicious!!!... The atmosphere was a little loud, but it just added to the fun time sóent there!!! We will definitely be back!

J A.

Yelp
Yum! Great vegan burritos and soups. Baked goods are not vegan but boy are they delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
I couldn't be happier with this place. Spacious, airy, indoor and outdoor seating options, terrific veg-friendly breakfast and lunch menus, plus they know how to jockey the espresso machine! Huevos motuleños (daily special) was a sublime dish.

Yelp
You're still the one, baby. Lots of news since our last visit: 1) They accept credit cards now, but you'll have to enjoy that almost 4% fee, and 2) Cinnamon rolls are happening multiple times a week, so we don't need to plan our entire Santa Fe itinerary around the previous schedule. This place is so near and dear to our hearts that we can almost see no wrong in it even though our savory dishes were not as wonderful as in the past. The cowboy bowl (sub potatoes for spinach) was really runny and the red chile had congealed a bit. Also, the poached eggs seemed suspiciously microwaved, but we have no evidence other than the shape. Still, it was good. The smothered burrito was supposed to have bacon, but didn't. It also seemed to have lost a bit of its magic. Our daughter (whose first visit here was when she was four months old and is now six!) was happy with her eggs and bacon. Anyway, all is forgiven, so let's move on to the reason why we love this place so much, and why, fifteen years later, one of us still thinks (actually, now both of us) that you'll never have a better blueberry muffin or cinnamon roll in your goddamn life. Still, THE BEST. We confess that the cinnamon roll had just come out of the oven, so it was still warm and more melty than usual--not our ideal condition--but of course we were shoving it into our mouths with abandon. Also, is that slice of chocolate cake new??? Well, whether it is or not, we also had to have that, and WOW. Love love love the scraped frosting on each slice (keep it classy!) and the depth of flavor. NEVER CHANGE!!!!! Service was friendly, and we got more baked goods to go because this is a once a year experience, so 5,000 calories+ be damned! We heart Counter Culture and look forward to coming every single visit to Santa Fe. Love you, girl.

Yelp
Deeelish! Our party of three (one local, two out-of-towners) dined on the Grilled Prosciutto Sandwich (killer crusty ciabatta and fabulous green salad) Breakfast Burrito and Turkey Sandwich around lunch time. It was a VERY busy but inviting atmosphere, where we were quickly served and enjoyed the service, prices and offerings. Would definitely come again - did I mention the cinnamon roll? Scrumptious!

Parker S.

Yelp
Modern, busy cafe with tasty food, friendly staff, and good vibe inside. I came for breakfast and ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes (YUM!!!) and a cup of coffee. Coffee was good and strong and the pancakes were delicious. Im usually not even a sweets person and hardly ever order pancakes, waffles, or french toast, but I am so glad I did this morning. Only thing I would have liked was some more strawberries on top, but the flavor was amazing, the berries tasted fresh, and the meal was very filling as well. You order at a counter then get a number and they bring your food to you. Service was super quick and everyone I met was so nice. Will definitely stop by on my next visit to Santa Fe!
google avatar

Kari S.

Yelp
Always stop here for lunch or breakfast- all tasty and some healthy choices! Then we go next door to the upscale resale shop. I got great shoes there!
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
Solid breakfast spot in Santa Fe. I couldn't tell the difference between the loaded burrito, the cowboy bowl or the huevos rancheros. I had the cowboy bowl. It was decent but very runny too much liquid. Just felt sloppy. We clearly had four people and when I said two waffles they just gave us one order of waffles which included two squares they were ok, nothing special. My machiatto was lacking the other 6 oz that every other coffee came with. The hot chocolate wasn't even finished by my kids which is a rare feat. The chai was made with a mix and water. The saving grace was the humongous cinnamon roll that the four of us shared. It was the star.

Yap F.

Yelp
I've been going there for years. The food is fine and the people who work here are pleasant. Just one complaint- it gets really noisy and the staff is unable to turn down the music. So, if you're trying to have a conversation it can be a bit difficult. I've read that restaurants have loud music so customers will think they're having a good time, but Counter Culture doesn't need to do that. We're perfectly happy.
google avatar

allan a.

Yelp
So tasty. Red and green chile were amazing and hot. Very busy and service was friendly.

Tiny F.

Yelp
Great food, super quick service. You have to order at a counter and get a number but I barely got sat down before my food arrived!! So yummy!!

Yelp
YAY for amazing vegan options (and non vegan, for my husband)! Visiting from California and we've been here twice now (once about 3 years ago) and they did NOT disappoint! Fresh, delicious and so many great options!!! Can't wait to come back!!! That said, I was pretty bummed out when I saw that their to go containers were made out of STYROFOAM!!!

Patricia N.

Yelp
Took my out of town friend for a late lunch and he loved it! Great food and house made baked goods.... can't beat it for a fun experience with good comfort food.

Camille G.

Yelp
The French toast is made from cinnamon rolls that they make in-house and it is so yummy! I recommend going on Wednesday, Saturday, or Sunday because that when they make the rolls fresh!
google avatar

Polly S.

Yelp
Today I ordered a Hand Held Burrito. It was not very good... Dry and nondescript. I have liked Counter Culture in the past, however, today they missed the mark. The iced coffee was good.
google avatar

Joanne T.

Yelp
A breakfast/lunch spot where you order at the counter and buss your own table. They have a variety of food with Asian and Spanish influence. Service was quick and friendly. My order was made wrong and I had to send it back, but they made the new order pretty quick.
google avatar

Abby L.

Yelp
A casual places that makes you feel like you are eating fancy. This place is yummy and great for groups.
google avatar

Matthew H.

Yelp
Counter Culture is a wonderful breakfast and lunch destination. Parking can be tricky as a tip when it's busy I usually turn right instead of into the parking lot and there is ample parking available across the street. Counter Culture offers various espresso coffee drinks and pastries as well as an excellent menu for breakfast and lunch. My recommendation for a true new Mexican inspired breakfast would be the breakfast burrito or the Durango omelette both are sure to satisfy if you are in town visiting. There is plenty of seating both inside and plenty of shaded seating outdoors as well. Whether you are a Santa Fe local like myself or in town visiting out counter culture down as a must try for local nm inspired breakfast and lunch!
google avatar

Tiffany R.

Yelp
Came here on our way out of town....Food was incredible! We also had the cowboy bowl and it came with a homemade hot tortilla.... These pancakes are some of the best I've ever had! We also had a glass of sparkling rose and it was great! Patio out front is perfection....

Yelp
LOVE the food, HATE being overcharged multiple times! The last time we got overcharged 48 dollars!!! AVOID this place, or plan to be robbed unless you're paying with cash.

Carl H.

Yelp
I just arrived in Santa Fe, and this place looked good at first, with lots of shaded space outside for dogs, but I had work to do, but the wifi does not work outside the coffee shop. I left.

Suzy S.

Yelp
