Best Views from Austin, Texas Restaurants | Eater Austin

"Located in a historic building that is an institution that has been around for 50 years, the West Hills Lake location of the Austin-born barbecue restaurant chain presents an incredible 20-mile view of the Texas Hill Country from its covered twinkle-lit stone patio. The barbecue is also fantastic, particularly the snappy sausage and peppery turkey breast. The indoors is more of a classic barbecue joint, which is a different kind of beautiful view." - Erin Russell

Google
I’m shocked how high of a rating this place has it was the main reason I decided to give it a try. As we where ordering we where told by our waitress Alyssa that we where not able to order the 5 meat platter as it was lunch time and that platter was apart of the regular menu. I’ve never heard of an establishment not allow you to order from the regular menu regardless of it being lunchtime I would understand the other way around but that didn’t make much sense to me as it uses all the same meats as the lunch menu does just all in one platter. When we got our food it left much to be desired. Not only did it look disappointing but the brisket was dry and the sausage was giving lunch meat. The potato salad was not good, the French fries were cold but the fried okra was pretty good. You can tell they don’t put much effort into their barbecue. The service was also terrible she took our order and that was pretty much it. We even asked for a drink menu at one point and she did bring it to us but then never came back. We also waited quite a bit of time after we were done eating to get our check. The view was really nice atleast.

Google
Lots of food for a nice price. The food is tender and if you order the platter you get coleslaw, beans, potatoe salad along with your 2 or 3 meat plate. Bread is served as well. Each time I have eaten here, I leave very full and satisfied. I love the ambiance. It is located on the river and even if you sit higher in the restaurant, it still feels like home. The service can get hit or miss, depending on how busy they are. This last time I went there were several graduation parties going on. It seemed like some of the servers were locked in on bigger tips and wouldn't wait on you because of not their table. Other places help each other, just an observation. When our server came she was super sweet and took great care of us. Overall, just did enjoy my time and my dinner!

I remember my father once brought us here when I was about 12, and the view was already something special. On our way to a family wedding, I wanted to share that memory with my own children. While the landscape has evolved with new homes and businesses, the beauty remained just as I recalled. We requested an indoor table with a view, and we were seated exactly as we asked. The service was quick and efficient, just as expected. For our meal, my son and I ordered the ribs, and my daughter opted for the children's smoked chicken. We began with an appetizer of wings, and the food was consistently good. The ribs were flavorful and generously portioned, the mac and cheese was perfectly executed, the fried okra was the best I've ever tasted, and the wings were cooked to perfection with a delicious flavor. We all enjoyed our lunch immensely. Though I rarely have reason to travel to Austin, I'd eagerly bring my wife here to experience it for herself.

Google
The view is amazing! We had a County Line in Lubbock TX, many years ago. Never thought I'd eat its BBQ ever again. Brought back some great memories with the decorations and their food was delicious! I loved it. I recommend this establishment to anybody who has a heart for Texas BBQ.

K ok

Google
i'll tell you what you can get all the recommendations you want about Texas BBQ and go standing in long lines. This place has some dang good BBQ. Get the beef ribs get the pork ribs try the brosket. The chicken wings are insanely good. Go there during happy hour and see what I'm talking about. You can get some nice wings and sliders on the cheap. And the drinks are insanely good. if you've never had a stuffed baked potato you're in for a treat. You can get them with brisket turkey beef or pork .The one on the hill actually has a really good steak. The one with lake does not have the steak. But it just depends on what you feel like being up on the hill looking out we're sitting on the water while you eat. They're both really good spots. ..staff is awesome

Google
County Line was a great experience. We shared the house bread and queso fries with brisket, which were both great. I tried the 3 meat platter with lean brisket, pulled pork, and sausage with sides of mac and cheese and potato salad. The brisket was tender and the pulled pork was delicious, especially with the slightly sweeter sauce. The mac and cheese and potato salad were both great compliments and I had no complaints. Portion sizes and prices were very reasonable. Views of the hills from this location were great, and I’d highly recommend sitting outside if the weather’s agreeable.

Google
Some of the meats were dry and under salted/ seasoned. Beautiful ambience, decor and view at the restaurant but flies were terrible, I will take blame for sitting outside. Our server Abigail was so friendly and gave us great service and helpful with questions regarding the menu. Everyone else we encountered there was very pleasant as well. I would go back just for the friendly staff!

Google
The lean smoked brisket was everything you can ask for. It was fresh and moist.... you can taste the smoky art of its creation. This is a perfect meal to recover from a nice hike! The views extend the peaceful vibe of nature. Friday at 4pm had plenty of parking space and the place was empty.

Yelp
When we have out of town visitors, we always ask if they prefer pork or Beef ribs. If they say beef, we bring them to county line. These are the best beef ribs. And the history of the place is fun as well. The view is incredible. Do not miss out on the experience of visiting the restroom. While in there, listen carefully! When we went tonight, Jacklyn was our waitress. She was excellent. She was friendly and quick. And seeing her with her tiny frame carrying the huge racks of ribs, that was a sight to behold!!

Yelp
My colleagues and I came here on a Monday evening and I was a bit underwhelmed. The interior was clean and it gave an authentic vibe with great views overlooking the area. We asked our waitress for recommendations and I went with the sausage, brisket, corn on the cob, and a side salad (which was huge and a full sized salad! as a non-Texan). The brisket lacked flavor and the corn on the cob had no seasoning like salt or butter on it at all. We also ordered some wings for the table to share and they were a bit dry. Based on the great reviews we saw on Google, we were a bit underwhelmed by the flavor and didn't find that anything stood out.
google avatar

Chelsea L.

Yelp
Great views outside. I actually enjoyed the burger more than the actual bbq plate. We ordered brisket and ribs with the sides of Mac and cheese with potato salad. Chips with queso are soooo good! We got the queso with meat.

Yelp
Make sure you go hungry! Food was amazing and server was wonderful. We had a big group, so the family style playing was perfect. A great Texas BBQ experience!

Yelp
Back to the ole reliable, was near and brought my teenager who hasn't ver been able to join me when near on business. He was extremely surprised, loved his smoked, peppered turkey breast and the portion. He had to try the home made bread "appetizer," he's a "bready conjure!" Anyway, great as always, well done to stay on top for 49 years with all the Bbq places popping up across the Central Texas! And the staff is ALWAYS amazing!

Yelp
Friends, comrades, amigos, what is going on at The County Line? Service was great and the restaurant cozy with a great view... so why 2 stars? THE FOOD. I don't get it, why is it so bad? My beef ribs were old, it felt like they were sitting in the fridge a few days and got reheated. My husbands brisket was so salty and also appeared to not be very fresh. My daughters had ribs and their food was ok. I'm not expecting Terry Blacks but it should be enjoyable at least. It makes me sad because this location and their location by the river offer a scenic view while dining but if you can't enjoy your food is it really worth it?
google avatar

Bonnie R.

Yelp
Picked up a rack of ribs and some sausage. Ribs were meaty and sausage was good. We certainly miss their homemade wheat bread. The white bread isn't as good.

Yelp
It's Texas Barbecue; that's what it is! Almost perfect! Great service and exactly the ambiance you'd expect!

Alex M.

Yelp
Awesome service and a good priceless view! There is an extensive menu. Big parking lot.

Yelp
3.5 What a great, amazing view!! So relaxing to just sit outside looking at the beautiful view while enjoying a cocktail and some apps. Our server was a friendly guy, polite and didn't make us feel rushed. The French fries where crispy and covered with a homemade queso sauce. The sliders were very good served on soft rolls with tasty goodness inside.

Yelp
Revisiting Austin, my favorite place is County Line on Bee Cave. Beautiful View! The service was on point and the food was exactly what I remembered. Thank you again for a wonderful time.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the bbq here and all its sides. The restaurant has a very bbq house feel to it and the decor on all the walls were very cool to look at. The service was great and all of the staff were very polite and accommodating. I ordered the ribs and my wife got the brisket, both were so delicious and fell apart in our mouths. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Rebecca F.

Yelp
This place is good to come to for the view, fresh bread and the ribs. Can't say much for the brisket kinda dry. But it's a good place to come too! The bread and the ribs are the reasons we come back when where in Austin. The service is good too!
google avatar

Stephanie L.

Yelp
The food, service and the view were awesome. Our group had a great time. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Okay - I'll start off with, this is Texas. You have to have PHENOMENAL BBQ to compete. Compared to other states, this place is top notch. Compared to other places in Austin though? It's good, but definitely not the best. You know what it's the best at though? Not having an hour long wait out the door just to order. So if you're looking for a sit down where you won't wait forever, this is the spot. We showed up at happy hour which was awesome! Cheap drinks, and their house margarita had really high quality liquor. Our waiter had two big parties so my assumption is he was overwhelmed, but it did take a loooooong time to order. I'm talking we probably sat there for an hour before he came to take food orders, which was crazy. I'm not sure if he seated us, took his lunch, then came back to help us? Not sure, but that was our biggest complaint. The food was good - again, not the best in Austin, but better than your average BBQ place. We got a meat plate and it's definitely worth the money, they give you good size portions. The baked potato was buttery and tasty, the fried okra was great. Their bread and honey butter? AMAZING. Their banana pudding was SO GOOD. I should have gotten an extra one! If we're in the area with a big party, this is probably the best place to get Texas BBQ so I'm sure we'll be back.

Yelp
Not often am I both disappointed by the food and made uncomfortable by the staff at one place. Here I got both. The brisket, the yardstick of Texas Barbecue, was dry. The smoke ring, if you want to call it that, was a lurid and unnatural color. It was bereft of any flavor beyond a weird chemical taste. The sausage tasted store bought, the turkey was dry but had the benefit of being the most flavorful thing on the plate. As far as the sides, the beans were dry (a theme?) and overly, unseemly sweet. The potato salad didn't even taste of potatoes. Not sure how you even achieve that. Well so as far as the service, it was slow, I saw my waiter cough directly into their hand and then serve food with it. The manager, I guess, came over, asked how we were, rapid fire insulted our choice of food, and ran off before we even knew what was what. Truly bizarre experience. Nicest thing was the view, I guess but it was still a waste of time.

Yelp
This restaurant is located on the top of a hill that overlooks the valley and some town (forgive me, I'm from out of town so I don't know this area well). The interior has a rustic BBQ restaurant vibe. The smell of smoked BBQ meats got me ready to devour some delicious central Texas BBQ. The staff here are amazing. They would get 6 stars if I could. So friendly and patient as this was the first time I've come to this restaurant. Our server, Jazz, recommended the sweet bread as an appetizer. She was spot on. Smeared some honey butter on top and it was warm and delicious! I got the two meat combo dinner. 2nd cut brisket and sausage with a side of green beans (as recommended by Jazz) and beans. Jazz was spot on as the green beans had some real good flavor and even some kick! The beans were decent. I'd say the meats were ok. Seemed like the brisket was about average. I've had central Texas style brisket that had more smoke flavor and this was just ok. Same for the sausage. I had to dip both of the meats in the provided BBQ sauce which made it taste much better. Overall, the food is about a 3.5. The staff and location are 5. So overall this place gets a 4.

Yelp
This place is a fantastic ambiance!! It is decorated with Texas and country feeling decor. They had an incredible patio over looking the river and I giant grass space for outdoor dinning/events. We were able to walk in and get seated after a 30 minute wait at 7:30 pm on a Thursday evening. Can't ask for a better bbq ambiance. Our waiter was so nice and helpful for suggestions. The food comes out extremely quick. Make sure to our their famous homemade bread it was our favorite. The bbq itself is okay but nothing special for TX bbq.

Yelp
Returned to The County Line on the Hill for dinner. I ordered and picked up again. The Grilled Chicken Breast Sandwich was seasoned really well and it was fantastic. It came with homemade bread, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a side of BBQ sauce. There is seating inside and outside with views of the hills. It's a great place to go to sit down and eat or to order and pick up.
google avatar

Alexandra S.

Yelp
For being a Texas bbq joint, I was greatly disappointed. The pork ribs were a bit chewy and tasted as if they've been sitting waiting to get served. The beef ribs were awful, highly don't recommend them. The best thing on the plate was the turkey and home made bread. I give it two star only because the outdoor seating was beautiful and customer service was average.

Manuel D.

Yelp
What a great location with a view. The staff were great from greeting to departure. The bread is AMAZING. Pork ribs were my favorite, my daughter loved the chicken. My wife liked the brisket. Great beer selection. We will definitely return. It's different from places like Rudy's or Coopers. You sit down and have someone take your order. Nicer and more relaxed.

Yelp
I haven't said anything about County Line in almost 10 years? Maybe that's because they've flirted with being awful. Before and after the pandemic we had some poor experiences at The County Line. The other night it sounded like a good place to go and see how it was going. With our expectations left in neutral, everything turned out really good. On the BBQ side, we got pork ribs, brisket, and chicken. It was all very capable. Almost reminded me of County Line from days of yore. I had the ribeye. Don't go expecting steakhouse grade cuts, but they cooked it right and it hit the spot. The fried okra and margaritas are worth mentioning too. The place was bumping, which I like to see. Means the food is moving, the servers are making some money, and everything should be in good order. Our server was spritely and attentive. I don't know if they have some new management or simply figured out how to turn the ship around.

Yelp
Such an impressive restaurant! Excellent food! I've never seen salmon at a BBQ place-this has won my heart! The service from GeAnna was friendly and excellent! The view is gorgeous!

Yelp
We haven't eaten here for awhile. We ordered a couple of Wranglers to go. It was easy to order online, and the pickup was simple as well. Called when we pulled into a spot and the food was brought out quickly. Everything was correct in the order when we got home. We didn't get any bread, but we also didn't order any. There was no way to order online. The salads have been upgraded. They now have cranberries in them. The steaks were cooked well, as we requested. Maybe we will start ordering more often.

Yelp
Awesome view ! Ample parking. Easy going atmosphere. And, the best spud in the town .. lol !

Ashley S.

Yelp
I think best thing about this place is the bread the views. Brisket was dried out so if you want just so so BBQ and a cool view come here. Otherwise skip it

Stefanie S.

Yelp
Fantastic beef ribs - we met a friend and had a fabulous dinner. We had the jalapeño bites and those were excellent. The free bread is nothing to rave about but I did enjoy the Coleslaw which is simple and chunky and the ribs.
google avatar

Rachael J.

Yelp
My husband would always say, I want to try that place." when we drove past the County Line in Westlake, Tx. So this Sunday we ventured there for an afternoon lunch. We enjoyed the view and the service was friendly. However, the food was extremely chewy, bland, and not very appetizing. We ordered the 3 meat plate with chicken, pulled pork, and chopped beef and shared it with the sides of coleslaw and Mac and cheese. The kids had pork ribs and Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was not flavorful and the coleslaw looked more like a salad. On a positive note we did like the fresh bread and honey butter. We will not be back.

Alex K.

Yelp
We made a reservation for 9 people here last Friday. All of us were from out of town so we didn't really know what to expect. We just picked a BBQ place that had good reviews and looked like it had a nice indoor seating area. (Seems like a lot of Austin food is just food trucks with benches outside lol) We really enjoyed our time here. The food, the service, the ambiance was all great. The staff all really works well with each other, too, and it really makes it an enjoyable experience. We started off with a loaf of the homemade bread which was really good. I had the brisket which I thought was great also. Everyone else seemed to like their food a lot. Honestly one of the better parts of our trip. It was nice to eat and then relax with family a while here. The perfect setting for what we were looking for. A nice comfortable restaurant for a family dinner. Thanks again to the County Line. Not sure we'll be back since we all live far away but maybe one day!
google avatar

Josh T.

Yelp
Food is good beef ribs are better then the pork brisket was dry how ever the turkey was on point the wait staff are friends and great at there job

Yelp
I love the food at County Line! Great Service for lunch! Have be careful turning into the hidden location, but once you are there, great view and enjoy the food! Lean cut brisket is great!
google avatar

Larry E.

Yelp
I had not been to The County Line in years as I had watched it seem to fall behind some of the other BBQ places around where I live. MANY years ago I loved it! Well on a whim, the Lady and I ordered a delivery of 1/2 pound lean and 1/2 pound wet brisket. The prices had gone up of course, especially since the world turned upside down. The brisket? I was not really expecting much but to my surprise it turned out good. Not the greatest, but good, especially considering it was a delivery.
google avatar

Rick F.

Yelp
. Just visited here for the first time in about 5 years. Plenty parking, some shaded (It was 100F). Great views, good waitstaff, good selections. Beef ribs were very tough, more-so than remembered. Everything had loads of sugar. Prices seem reasonable. The BBQ here is similar to local competitors. Not bad, we'll be back, but wish they'd ease up on the sugar ! I'm not diabetic or pre-diabetic; but the sugar load pretty much ruined our meal. This place used to be a lot better. Rick .

Yelp
I cannot believe that this was my first time eating at this place! I just want to kick myself for missing out on this delicious food and breathtaking view of Austin's beautiful Hill Country. When you walk into this place it feels like you have stepped into the past because the decor looks old. I mean that in the best way possible. I love the ambiance. In every corner you have great photo ops! It smells so good as soon as you walk in. You're greeted by the friendliest hostesses and when we arrived we were told it was a 30 minute wait to be seated. I walked around and snapped a lot of photos and the place was pretty empty so we ended up getting an awesome seat after waiting about 10 minutes. Did I say the view is breathtaking! OMG! I feel so blessed to have so much beautiful nature around. This place has plenty of free parking, they are great for families, pets welcome on the outside patio and service was great! I believe our servers name was Christine and she was awesome! Her timing was impeccable. Mike the manager was fantastic!! He was greeting people and even help clear tables. I got a chance to talk to him about the restaurant and you can tell he loves his job. Now to the food. We had a big lunch so my husband wasn't that hungry he ordered the pecan pie and ice cream. Listen if you go here you have to have the pecan pie it will change your life!!! My husband was trying to get them to sell him a whole pie. Seriously that was probably one of the best pecan pies I have ever tasted. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The spud was really good but the BBQ sauce was a little too watery for my liking. I like the sauce to be slightly thicker. The peach cobbler was really good but after having a bite of the pecan pie I will definitely get that next time. I highly recommend this place! It's absolutely beautiful and food is good. The prices are a bit high but totally worth it.

Yelp
Live love the HAPPY HOUR WINGZ! Great cocktails too. Salad was fresh , still waiting on a decent coleslaw from them though!
google avatar

Anna R.

Yelp
I've been here twice now and its probably one of my favorite spots in the area to grab some drinks for happy hour and take in those views! The outdoor seating options are great. Some tables are covered, and some uncovered. Then there's also a variation of seating like picnic table style vs table and chairs. Anywhere you sit, you'll get a good view. The food is average in my opinion. I've only ever come here for bbq and it's never wowed me but it's good. There's a large parking lot outside County Line so parking has never been a problem when I've visited.

Raychal W.

Yelp
Great spot to spend the day outdoors with the fam and enjoy some yummy bbq. We had good service too
google avatar

Beverly S.

Yelp
People v. Robots. No robotic arms here! Just delicious bbq prepared by the same chefs who have manned the bbq pits for 20+ years. Highly recommended! The service, food and ambiance delivered beyond expectations!

Alexandra R.

Yelp
The food was actually terrible. The worst barbecue I've ever had. This place was talked up for the view. There was a deck for said view. A fence blocked the view. So I'm not sure what the hype was for. We had an event hosted here. So we were given plates of meat. Coleslaw and potato salad were offered as sides. The brisket was dry. The chicken was unseasoned and dry. They pulled pork just wasn't good. The potato salad was horrible. It had chunks of pickles in it and an overwhelming taste of pickle juice. That was honestly disrespectful. We ordered as a side Mac and cheese and a baked potato. The Mac and cheese was def made with a powder mix. And wasn't mixed in well enough cause it still had some powdery grit to it. The baked potato was astounding as it's just a naked baked potato that had all the toppings on the side and I could build it myself. Now the best part in the bathroom they have some weird cowboy tapes playing on repeat. It consists of a woman saying "man". Then followed by a cowboy that says "feller , that's a mean looking feller over there. " cringeworthy and super outdated. Overall. Would not come here again.

Becky S.

Yelp
It was great We ate out on the patio. Service was fine. The hostess was also our waitress. This restaurant has been around a long time. The food was good.
google avatar

Devin O.

Yelp
Honestly next to the food, the view from the patio is amazing! Definitely a great lunch spot, sit out in the sun, feel the breeze and enjoy some good bbq.
google avatar

Erica C.

Yelp
This location is my favorite The County Line location. The river is nice and tranquil. You can feed the turtles if you'd like. We visited for my birthday and enjoyed our late lunch. I ordered brisket and sausage. The sides are wonderful too, bean, potato salad and coleslaw. The margarita was nice too. Perfect way to celebrate a special day! Our waiter was nice, helpful and prompt.
google avatar

Megan W.

Yelp
Great price, Great BBQ, and wonderful Sunset ;) the staff also really friendly. If you have hungry boys, there is an All You Can eat family price!! :))
google avatar

Taylor D.

Yelp
The venue inside and setting outside with the views is lovely, its worth going for that alone. The BBQ was okay, its def not the best but it was still nice.

Gigi R.

Yelp
Worst Mac and cheese ever, green beans were outta a can, the meats were all mediocre at best. Did like their coleslaw and baked potato. Way better places to get BBQ.
google avatar

Holmes O.

Yelp
Elliot was absolutely awesome. Great experience all the way through. Highly recommend The County Line.

Peyton D.

Yelp
Was not impressed at all. I ordered a ribeye(medium) and half of it was medium then other half was well done. Super dry and chewy. The Mac and cheese is just mush with with no flavor. Same with the green beans, mush with no flavor and taste like they are from a can. Sweet tea was good, fried pickles were good and fried okra was good. I've never judged a restaurant so hard but I was so excited to try this place out and was just so disappointed. I'd rather go to chilis‍
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
I came back here for another event, and the queso was not grainy, but still a little too spicy for me. This time we could order off the appetizer menu, and the deviled eggs were a popular order, with nearly each table opting to split at least one serving of them.
google avatar

Kristina R.

Yelp
Man, this place looks SO cool, the view on the patio is to die for, the wait staff are excellent, the food was quick- it just tasted bad. Out of the 3 of us that went, 2 of us couldn't even try to finish either the meat or the sides. The potato salad tasted weird and salty. The meat had too much fat for me. But the third person in our party LOVED it. So I would definitely recommend giving it a try. The blackberry pie was phenomenal! I'm actually bumping this up to 4 stars just based on everything else besides the *food, haha.
