The Best Fun Date-Night Spots in Houston | Eater Houston

"Step into the psychedelic unknown one of Houston’s newest and trippiest art exhibits. Debuted in 2024 in Fifth Ward, Meow Wolf’s Radio Tave exhibit features neon-lit immersive installations, otherworldly characters, and ethereal scenes, including a graffiti multiverse and a beer can basement hidden behind three portals. Best of all, a quirky, interdimensional dive bar called Cowboix Hevvven takes visitors on a ride through posthumous cowboy culture with a menu of comforting Texas fare. Opt for its Hot Slop (a walking Frito pie with an option to make it vegan), hot dogs presented in various styles, and a grilled bologna sandwich called the Fried Malarky. Drinks are also on offer, with beer; lemonade, sodas, and iced teas; and classic dive cocktails, like Ranch Waters and gin and tonics, and sweet treats like apple fritters and ice cream cookie sandwiches." - Brittany Britto Garley

Atmosphere is next level of course, but the food was great as well! We got the Pickle Puppy which was delicious, the Hot Slop which was good but not for the faint of stomach, and the Apple Fritter with ice cream which was amazing. Service was great as well!

Cowboix Hevvven is perfect. They have mixed drinks with hypnotiq and big red, and they randomly blast metal music in the middle of the country music. By far the best "room" at any of the Meow Wolf's (and I've been to them all). I had a fried malarky sandwich and a dilly rita; both were very good. The staff were great, and I wish I lived in Houston so I could go back regularly!

Food was great and appropriately weird. Felt like a part of the whole experience, which was fun. However we sat there for over 5 minutes waiting to get served and never did. We had to sit at the bar when it was free and just ate there.

Got a portal pass and I’m so glad I did because I love this bar! Great country dive bar vibes while also being part of the art installation. The staff have all been great and hilarious the 3 times I’ve visited! Hot dog chips and a beer is a deal too!

Seriously never been so disappointed in my life.. my boyfriend and I went here because we got the Valentine’s Day special that came with an entree, dessert, and drink. When we got there, it was PACKED. The restaurant is WAAAY too small and understaffed to be having valentines specials. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar and were told we had to get seated to order food and use the special. We couldn’t order at the bar and then have our food taken to the table. Theres about 5 tables/some chairs against the wall with about 50 customers in there. We were looking around waiting for somebody to leave for about 45 minutes so we could simply sit and order.. We didn’t want to leave because we already bought the VDay special and didn’t want to waste our money. Finally, a table opens up and we literally attack it like vultures. We order our food and that’s a whole other disappointment. The “Fried” Malarky Sandwich wasn’t fried at all and the ice cream sandwich literally didn’t have ice cream. It was WHIPPED CREAM. Save your money and time. Skip going to Cowboix Hevvven and go everywhere else

My boyfriend and I went as a Valentine’s Day date. He knew I wanted to go and surprised me! The whole exhibit was amazing and this was the perfect “end-of-the-journey” place to grab a bite! The drinks were amazing and the food was lovely! Love my collector’s mug too! The place was small but let’s be honest it’s not meant to be a giant restaurant. It’s a quick snack and drink- almost like a saloon! Cowboix Hevvven indeed! Amazing staff too- we were served so quick and politely! Great job guys!

Meow Wolf Houston’s Radio Tave is an absolute gem of an immersive art experience that delivers a mind-bending journey unlike anything else in the city. From the moment you step inside, you’re enveloped in a vibrant, otherworldly environment where every corner bursts with creativity—think dazzling lights, surreal installations, and secret passages that spark curiosity. The attention to detail in the lighting design creates an atmospheric depth that pulls you into the story, making you feel like you’re part of a cosmic, post-punk adventure with a distinctly Texan flair. The interactive app adds a fun layer, letting you dive deeper into the narrative, though the real magic is in exploring the maze-like rooms and uncovering hidden surprises. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, enhancing the experience without breaking the spell. Whether you’re an art lover or just looking for a unique outing, Radio Tave is a trippy, unforgettable ride that’s perfect for a date night or a group adventure.

Yelp
Interesting bar/tavern within the Radio Tave MeowWolf exhibit in Houston. The vibes are fin with props to sit with and music that is upbeat; every now any then the lights will flash to black light revealing hidden words on the wall for a few seconds. The drinks are good and strong. They provide a list of signature cocktails and standard drinks as well. Price was standard for a bar. Food is lacking. Only a handful of items and most are... an interesting pick for a bar. 3 different types of chilli. I asked for a side of jalapenos as listed on the menu, no jalapenos. I was told there may be pickled peppers. Nope, did not have any either. Would have gone well with the chilli dog as it was a very heavy meal. Hot dog is lackluster, bun is your typical hot dog bun. The sausage sampler appetizer was great, however. The sausage was tasty with a good snap, served with spicy mustard and pepper jelly it was a great mix of flavors. The nachos were extreeeeemely subpar. Nothing special about it for how much you pay for and very bland. Hard pass. Otherwise you're better off going somewhere else within the area for food.

Yelp
I knew Cowboix Hevvven was located inside of Meow Wolf because I did some research beforehand, but for all intents and purposes, it's a divey speakeasy. The only way to get in is with a ticket to Meow Wolf. Seating is first come, first served. We grabbed the first table we saw which happened to be right near the entrance. There's a cool photo op at the entrance, but it created a bottle neck because people kept stopping inside of the curtain entry to take photos. Inevitably, unsuspecting patrons kept bumping into people when they tried to walk in. We watched this happen multiple times. The bottle neck caused crowding around our table which quickly got old. I didn't get our server's name, but she was very sweet. The bar was busy because it was adult's only night. The server went through the menu and gave us some time to figure out what we wanted to order. None of the specialty cocktails on the "Fancey Shmancy" menu piqued my interest so I went with a G+T from the "Hooch" menu. I don't know what type of gin was used, but the drink was fine. Our server gave us lids for our drinks so we could take them with us through the rest of the exhibit. Two of my friends ordered the Hot Slop which is their version of Frito Pie. I didn't try any, and honestly there's not much to say about it because it's Frito Pie. The loud metal music that kept randomly playing was annoying. Our server told us that it turns on when someone presses a button (not sure where said button is located), however it is also on a loop so even if the button doesn't get pressed, it will eventually play. It totally wasn't our vibe. There's a lot going on with the art in Cowboix Hevvven. We didn't take the time to explore because we were pretty much over it by the time we got to the bar. The one thing that was apparent is the good vs evil theme. If you care to know more about the art and the inspiration behind it, you can read about it on their blog.

Yelp
Cowboix Hevvven may be my favorite bar in Houston now! Catch is, its hidden and the only way you can get in here is with a ticket into Houston's newest immersive art museum Meow Wolf. It's exactly as the website describes it....."Cowboix Hevvven is an immersive futuristic take on a honky tonk dive-bar left in limbo inside Meow Wolf Houston." You walk in and you feel like you are transported into another galaxy. I felt like I was in the Guardians of the Galaxy set or something. You can sit with aliens around the bar or at a table, or sing some songs with some on stage. My whole squad took over the bar. Liz was our bartender and she took great care of us. Don't come in here thinking you're going to get a huge meal or fancy food. They serve bar food like hot dogs, chips and dip and sandwiches. We saw a bologna sandwich on the menu and had to try it. This sandwich was delicious and was served with kettle chips and bacon jam as a dip. It was a pleasant surprise and a nice snack amongst friends. They have legit drinks here as well. I had an Ol' Fashion PB&J. The drink was delicious and packed a punch. Since it's inside Meow Wolf, the immersive art is inside here as well. There is so much thought and detail into everything. Just looking around you can be entertained, but they also have a pool table, a stage where I would think they have live music. You can get up there and sing like I did if your heart desires as well. There's a jukebox that plays some honky tonk music, but look around for a code to enter in for a nice surprise. Take a pic in their photo booth for a small fee as well. Find this place is you're in Meow Wolf. It will not disappoint!

Yelp
Liz!! Oh Liz, made our experience so awesome! Made some great recommendations on the drinks and made them fantastic! I went towards my usual vodka soda, but then I saw hypnotic at the bar and opted to add a floater, haven't seen that around since the Incredible Hulk days!! Also got to try the old fashioned which was made quite nicely! The one thing I really enjoyed about this bar is that it's hidden within Meow Wolf! It's a cool little find, and the vibe is one like no other I've seen before. It's a cool dive bar with lots of cool little weird things. If you look around close enough you'll find all sorts of odd treasures that just work in this place! This could easily be a cool little hang out spot!

Yelp
Cowboix Hevvven is a dive-bar-themed speakeasy hidden inside the new Meow Wolf Radio Tave immersive art exhibit. They are still in their soft-opening phase, but they have a full food and beverage menu! I assume you have to pay the Meow Wolf entry fee to access the bar, because it's located in the middle of the exhibit. Equipped with a functioning juke box and photo booth, every piece of the bar is designed by artists to fit the theme. Honestly, I could spend an hour just reading everything on the walls and looking through the juke box. Apparently, they had 30 custom songs performed by Texas artists, so what sounds like generic country or tejano music is actually part of the exhibit. Drink-wise, I got the Waco's Vacay & my husband got the Whisky Cola... both were good and seemed appropriately priced. We didn't realize they'd have food, yet, or we would have come hungry. Super excited to see if/how the place evolves after their grand opening, but it's pretty fantastic already!
