"Cowboy Surfer, the long-await hotspot from Liberty Kitchen founders F.E.E.D. TX Restaurant Group, has finally opened in Memorial City. The bar, inspired by the brief 1960s cowboy-surfer culture of spots like the Texas Gulf Coast, opened quietly on Thanksgiving. The restaurant was first announced way back in 2012 by Liberty Kitchen chef Lance Fegen, under the name Surfing Cowboys and with a location on Ella. Businessman and partner Jim Jard eventually secured the Memorial City spot in 2019, and in June of that year Liberty Kitchen was teasing dishes from Cowboy Surfer, including a po’ boy with fried shrimp, oysters, pork carnitas and bacon jam, on its Facebook page. A few things have changed since 2019 though, and not just the coronavirus. For one, F.E.E.D. TX no longer owns the Liberty Kitchen chain. It was sold to Culinary Khancepts, owner of State Fare restaurants, in August. That might have freed up Carl Eaves, creative director of F.E.E.D. TX, to finally focus on Cowboy Surfer. Along with Jard, Eaves has also partnered with Jack Massing, one half of legendarily subversive creative duo the Art Guys. The restaurant, Eaves said in a statement, is meant to be a “laid-back respite from the hectic Houstonian life.” That vibe includes details like Texas comfort food, live music (eventually), and art and memorabilia on the walls of the 1,850 square-foot space. Bar bites include Texas chili and Dorito chili pie, nachos and cheeseburgers, and a selection of pizzas. Lance Fegen, who is still at Liberty Kitchen, consulted on the menu. But the real focus is on the drinks, categorized by “surfer”, including a Dark & Stormy, a prickly pear margarita, and a variation on the lemon drop; or “cowboy”, with Ranch Water cocktails, Bloody Mary’s and a mezcal coffee cocktail. For now, Cowboy Surfer is sticking to 50% capacity, and is not hosting live music until its owners feel it is safe to do so. Hours are 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday, Friday and Saturday, and 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday." - Brittanie Shey

My favorite Establishment in Houston. We live and work close by, and would much rather come here than go into the city. I had my 40th Birthday there with 100 people, and we had such a great time. They treated us so well and will be a returning customer for the years ahead. They have treated us like Family since we met them as business neighbors in 2021

New favorite place! I needed a place to have a drink and catch up with a friend. PERFECT place! Small and unassuming secret place in a busy area. We were a bit nervous before we walked in because of the window paintings and the fact it was in a strip center. Soo glad we gave it a try! Attentive bartender. Drinks served in nice glassware. Great live music (Magnolia Brothers.) We didn’t try the food, but it looked good, served in the red picnic baskets to other patrons.

Bartender is the only reason why I’m giving it two stars because he was fabulous. I walked in before my party got there and it was the 1st time I felt discriminated against at a “bar”. 3 couples gave me a stare down when I got there and the cowboy at the bar made rude and distasteful remarks to me while ordering and closing out my tab. Needless to say I call my group and told them do not come and we went elsewhere.

This is officially my new favorite Houston bar. This place has a really awesome vibe and the staff was very friendly and hard working. The live music was great and their Surfer and Cowboy beers were really good. You won’t be disappointed with this place!

My husband and I stumbled into this little bar after a concert last Friday night! It was lively and had a great vibe. Definitely a casual but fun place! The staff was friendly and attentive. We just had drinks but they did have a menu for food. It was mostly bar type food but looked good! There was a setup for a band but there wasn’t any live music playing but it was pretty late. However, I loved the music they were playing! Had a great 80’s playlist on! This is a great spot for people watching! Definitely looking forward to returning!

Such a chill spot to get some great cocktails and catch up with friends. They have a limited food menu, but definitely get the hot dog with chili and tater tots. Keith, the bartender, is friendly and fast and makes some delicious drinks.

Cowboy Surfer Kingwood is an awesome place for many occasions. A great place for a simple spur of the moment happy hour or an evening out with that special someone. They have live music and a great dance floor along with pool, darts and shuffle board. It really is the perfect place for any occasion. They have a great drink menu, like the Felony Melanie. I highly recommend checking out Cowboy Surfer. We will definitely go back…a lot! Cheers!!

Cool little treasure in 77024. Located directly across the street from the professional buildings near the hospital. This bar is friendly and fun! The happy hour prices are reasonable, Keith & Maggie are very attentive and the space is cozy. The walls are filled with nostalgic photos, there are TVs throughout to watch the Astros (or whatever), there is a small stage for the live music & open mic nights and 2 dart boards in the back portion of the bar with extra seating. This review can't be complete without mentioning the great mix of music. It's a good spot to sit and Shazam tunes to add to your music library. In the couple hours I was there, I heard CCR, Waylon Jennings, Cody Jinks, George Jones and Chris Stapleton. 70's, true country and Texas country all mixed together. I did not try any of the food, so I will have to return to check that out along with open mic night on Wednesdays. One more thing I typically don't mention in my reviews: toilet paper. They have great toilet paper! Well done, guys! I will return.

Yelp
I love a good neighborhood bar, especially one that serves delicious craft cocktails! My friend suggested grabbing some drinks at Cowboy Surfer after having dinner at The Pit Room nearby. The bar is in a small shopping strip tucked away in a neighborhood. Because of it's proximity to a school, they have to legally be classified as a private club. Luckily, a membership literally involves scanning your ID and it's free! Once you do that, you're good to go and you only have to scan it once. Easy peasy. The bar has a front room and a back room. There's a stage in the front room, however they did not have live music on the night we visited (a Friday). They have a few tables in the main seating area. In the back area there are couches as well as darts. We started in the main seating area, then migrated to the back room when the table next to us got loud. I had the Zoggs, the Aviation Martini, and the Gin Gimlet. I enjoyed all of my drinks. They have a great selection of craft cocktails including classics like the Pimm's Cup and the French 75. The bartenders are very friendly. Jimmy was super nice and did a good job of going around to tables to check on patrons throughout the evening. It was nice not having to get up to order drinks at the bar. At the end of the evening, the register glitched when he was closing out my tab so he only charged me for two drinks instead of three. I tipped extra to make up the difference. Cowboy Surfer has a chill vibe, great drinks, and great service!

Yelp
This is my type of bar. It's very chill and laid back, the customers you see are local and from the neighborhood. If this is your first time there they will scanned your ID so you become a member of their club. The reason why is because they're close to a school so TABC requires them to operate as a private club. All you have to do is provide your ID, they scan it and you're a member for life. Don't worry it's free. It's nothing shady about what they're doing and they are following the TABC protocol. The inside is very comforting with a nice/friendly crowd along with good service from the bartenders. They have a little area in the back if you want to be away from everyone and they have darts for you to play just in case you're bored. I was told that they have live music on certain days and open mic night on their stage. If you're hungry they also have food but it's limited so don't expect a filet mignon or lamb chops with roasted potatoes. If you want a list of the menu I'll name a few. They have Hamburgers/Turkey Burger, Doritos chili pie, bowl of chili, pretzels, chicken/beef quesadillas, chicken/beef tacos, chips and queso, hummus and chips etc. Pretty much simple bar food that will hold you over until you get home. I decided to order their Manhattan and my oh my was it amazing. It was strong & tasty. Overall, great service and nice environment. This is a hidden gem & I cannot to come back. Plenty of parking spots so there's never a hassle to find one.

Yelp
Awesome new lounge. Unique spot for Kingwood. The music and atmosphere is my style. Love that they have Shuffleboard, pool and darts in the back. Chili dogs are killer!

Yelp
Live music, food to munch on. Boyfriend didn't want to get chips and salsa but glad we did because it was great! VERY clean restrooms. Love that. Thank you cowboy

Yelp
I like to pop in here on Fridays or for a night cap. Great music, great drinks, and great crowd. I've never had a bad experience. Other reviews complain about them asking to scan your license if it's your first time. That's NOT a shady business tactic. Texas state law requires bars which are within so many feet of a school (as they are) to do so. They are being 100% compliant with the law.

Yelp
This bar was a really cute gem I stumbled on. The drink and food menu was impressive. And I really loved the atmosphere, with the option of live music during the week! The cherry on top was that the staff was super kind, and she took her time to make sure everything was great for our group. I will definitely be back :)

Ralph L.

Yelp
Not sure why cowboy surfer name, but it's a nice neighborhood bar. Order the Dorito Pie! Live music on Sunday night. The night we went the band didn't appreciate how small the place is and WAS VERY LOUD. VERY VERY LOUD

Patrick B.

Yelp
Great live music, burgers, beers and cocktails! Definitely a local hang which and reminds of classic dive bars back in the day.

Kim R.

Yelp
This place was very chill. The bartenders were on top of their game, the decor was awesome and the beer was cold. What more would you want from a bar? Oh, they also had a pretty good menu, although I didn't try any of the food. Some people down the bar did and said it was great! I'll be back soon!

Heather S.

Yelp
We LOVE this place!!! It's a dive bar sans dive. Lol Great service, great drinks and actually GOOD bar food. Love the pretzel and the quesadillas. Open mic night was fun with an interesting assortment of characters and their music. It's SO nice to have a cute, fun place in that neighborhood!!!!

Cindy W.

Yelp
We had my husband 60th party there for around 40 guests. Everyone had a great time. Bartender Keith made sure everyone had a drink at all time and Valerie was super helpful with the whole party set up. Couldn't ask for a better setup. Thank you Valerie and Keith.

Ken M.

Yelp
So much fun.. drinks are reasonable, all good is good.. it's bar food so Ya know.. come have a beer and be good to the bat tenders

Jim B.

Yelp
Our neighborhood place. Great cocktails, friendly staff but the food selection , even for bar nibbles is pretty grim.

Judith S.

Yelp
First time here and we loved it. Neighborhood hole in the wall. Great place to come and meet your neighbors. We live 5 miles away and WISH this bar was closer to our house. But let me tell you, we truly felt comfortable and welcomed. Food was ok. We ordered the Texas chili--- they do not make it in house but hey it's ok for bar food. We will definitely be back. Promise you will like it.

Lara B.

Yelp
Did not eat their food. Drank Palomas one bartender made them excellent the other bartender made them horrible. When I got a horrible one the other bartender made it right. Fun atmosphere.

Shan P.

Yelp
Wonderful local bar with great weekly talent during open mic night. Really enjoyed the experience and look forward to returning.

Kelly H.

Yelp
Very lowkey place to grab drinks and friends with great food. Pretzel bites with queso were the best thing I've ever eaten

Eddie W.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood watering hole. Great ambience and staff. Mika, Keith, Maggie and Valarie are all great!

Joe R.

Yelp
The music wasn't bad but it wasn't crowded and but made us sit in the back room which was like a closet. The food was horrible. Tater tots very greasy and burger tasted old like not fresh - clientele were not friendly - was simply getting a drink at the bar and some older large disheveled woman told us to get the F away Weird we left

Bryan S.

Yelp
Definitely a diamond in the memorial area. Fun, eclectic music based bar with awesome art and thoughtful touches. Super clean, great bites and phenomenal drinks. Great music as well. The owners are regularly mingling and telling stories with the patrons. Love this place.

Stephen G.

Yelp
The owners of this establishment spent a lot of money on this little jewel of a bar/live music spot. The place is charming. The employees simply couldn't be nicer, prices reasonable, we all enjoyed the food and the drinks were certainly well poured. Yes, you have to show your license since they are across the street from a public hospital (blame weird Texas laws - not the establishment). I really don't understand the complaints regarding the license requirement - many bars won't let you in the door without seeing your drivers license. As for the political complaint....I started surfing at the age of 16 and ran cattle in Central Texas for several years and the vibe in this place is EXACTLY "Cowboy Surfer"! So, if you want to be among friendly people ( many musicians were in the audience), served by friendly people, eat and drink well and hear great music - this is your place!

Patrick C.

Yelp
Great to have a local spot like this in the area. Nice change of pace vs somewhere like Kirby Ice House across the highway.

Lisa G.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place the food is great the drinks are great the problem when a particular bartender is working she will cater to the clientele she chooses. The gentleman bartender is always so pleasant. Tried to order a burger for lunch it was 3:30 I was working late and was told no kitchen is not open. So the place would be a 5 star if she was not there. Till she has a change of attitude she brings the atmosphere down.

K J.

Yelp
Dropped on for the first time to hang out with friends. Keith is pleasant and helpful. The pretzels are great. Enjoyed the cocktails.

Lanette K.

Yelp
Great little neighborhood bar. Been a couple of times. Older crowd- but that's ok, 'cause I'm no spring chicken. You know what they say - never judge a book by it's cover. Would never know what gem is inside by the unassuming exterior. Have not yet had the opportunity to stay for a show, but would like to sometime.

Jill A.

Yelp
Fantastic find tucked away from the hustle and bustle. Good food, happy hours, great music and nice bartenders!

Pat R.

Yelp
Clean relaxing and lots of parking .. Food Could use improvement I think... Great drink options ...

Blake J.

Yelp
The bartender/manager said he needed to swipe my TX driver license. I said no thanks and he replied it was the LAW, TABC he said.. Pretty sure this guy didn't graduate at the top of his class. Not returning.. Hope they have a plan B in place.

Christine M.

Yelp
Awesome bar! Even better owner. Great music, great drinks, great atmosphere. Great neighborhood crowd and a enjoyable way to spend the evening. Especially on Wednesdays, when they have fantastic live music on open mike night.

Bobby P.

Yelp
This is a great neighborhood bar!! Bartenders are friendly & never let your drink go dry. Support local!!

Joey N.

Yelp
Love this Bar!!! So glad we now have a great local bar in the Memorial Area!! Live music and the atmosphere is great!! The staff is amazing and has an encyclopedic knowledge of scotch and bourbons!!
