"Opened quietly on Thanksgiving at 827 Frostwood Drive in Memorial City, Cowboy Surfer is the long-awaited bar from Liberty Kitchen founders F.E.E.D. TX Restaurant Group that channels the brief 1960s cowboy-surfer culture of the Texas Gulf Coast. First announced in 2012 by Liberty Kitchen chef Lance Fegen as Surfing Cowboys with a planned Ella location and later secured for Memorial City by partner Jim Jard in 2019, the project evolved after F.E.E.D. TX sold Liberty Kitchen in August, which appears to have freed creative director Carl Eaves to focus on the concept alongside Jard and Jack Massing. Housed in an 1,850-square-foot space and meant to be a “laid-back respite from the hectic Houstonian life,” the spot pairs Texas comfort food with art and memorabilia on the walls and plans for live music eventually. The menu, consulted on by Lance Fegen, features bar bites such as Texas chili and Dorito chili pie, nachos, cheeseburgers and a selection of pizzas, and was previously teased to include a po’ boy with fried shrimp, oysters, pork carnitas and bacon jam. The main focus is on drinks, categorized as “surfer” cocktails (including a Dark & Stormy, a prickly pear margarita and a lemon-drop variation) and “cowboy” drinks (Ranch Water cocktails, Bloody Marys and a mezcal coffee cocktail). For now Cowboy Surfer is operating at 50% capacity, is not hosting live music until the owners deem it safe, and is open 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday, Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday." - Brittanie Shey
