Cowboys Smokehouse Cafe came to the rescue for our hunger after staying a bit late at Bryce Canyon. We ordered several plates to share hoping to get it to-go but found out that they don't do to-go! No worries, they still let you sit down, enjoy a couple buttery dinner rolls, and then box up your fare as soon as it arrives.
Some highlights of our choices included the chicken fried steak which was a surprise for me. Usually I find this dish to be a salt bomb but Cowboys Smokehouse Cafe does it real nice. The steak is thin but breaded and fried perfectly. We also ordered this with Cowboys' famed baked beans and coleslaw - both delivered on taste and texture!
While we're talking about sides though, I also highly recommend the french fries and the baked yam. The fries were perfectly seasoned and had the perfect texture - crisp exterior, fluffy interior. The baked yam was like thanksgiving - carmelized, soft, and sweet. The only downer was surprisingly the baked potato which was on the dry side.
For our other entrees, we got the brisket and hamburger. I totally recommend the brisket which was tender and delicious. It had a lightly smoked flavor which was also delightful. We forgot to squeeze some bbq sauce before leaving so oops (but it didn't really need it)! As for the hamburger, it's a solid 1/2 lb portion but I felt like the toppings weren't delivered in the best format (one long slice of pickle laid across the burger and was paired with 2 skinny slices of tomato and maybe 2 little rings of onion on either side. It was difficult to get a cohesive bite with everything in my opinion. The bun was also pretty..."bready" which didn't compliment the hamburger well in my opinion.
For service, our waitress was very friendly but we were unfortunately hit with a looooooong wait for food (nearly 40 minutes) because of an adjacent large table's order. The menu isn't that extensive so I don't know if the kitchen was short or if there are some prioritization issues but it was pretty painful to wait that long for food that we also intended to make to-go. It admittedly threw off our plans by a bit. I did appreciate the gesture of giving us dinner rolls while we waited though.
All in all, I would love to return and actually enjoy my meal fresh, hot, and not on the move. See you when I see you Cowboys Smokehouse Cafe!
