Cracked: The Egg Came First Is Bringing its Lucious Loaded Tots to Wicker Park | Eater Chicago

"Opened in 2017 in Champaign as the brand’s first brick-and-mortar outpost, this restaurant evolved from the truck operation to offer a sit-down breakfast and brunch option in a University of Illinois town. It helped the owners build a steady customer base, refine operations beyond the truck mindset, and involved partners and management with culinary training to maintain a focus on simple, high-quality food delivered quickly." - Naomi Waxman

Google
Very casual place for some breakfast! The Mocha was good and so was one of their breakfast sandwiches. Slightly more avocado would have put it over the top.

Google
If you want breakfast in Champaign, you better come to Cracked! The food here is so good and the concoctions of savory goodness are creative and ideal. I had the Sloppy Jose, which is a chorizo sandwich with guacamole, hash brown, and a fried egg. I loved this sandwich, especially with the sauce provided at the tables. I also tried the French toast bites. I asked for extra cinnamon sugar and mixed it in with lots of syrup. After that added load of sugar, the bites were good, but I probably do not recommend. Coffee is good. The atmosphere is nice and has U of I stuff everywhere. Service was good but the sandwiches took forever to be made. Luckily, the tasted very good to make up for it. I will definitely be coming back to Cracked to try more items off the menu!

Google
Went in an hour before they closed and ordered a Dr. Seuss, I was a little worried about the price of some of the stuff but compared to most places the prices aren't even high. The burrito came up pretty fast though, and he asked if I wanted a bag (appreciated). I walked a half hour back home and then waited a bit more before actually eating it, and not only was it still nice and warm and HUGE, it tasted delicious. I was gobsmacked; it tasted so good. I also love how the bottom and sides were toasted and sealed, making the overall experience of eating it even better. Very good experience and will go again to try other delicacies.

Teresa

Google
Casual place and kind of hard to find seating. They gagged with the Dr Seuss burrito tho.

Google
Ordered a Dr. Seuss burrito and an "horchata"... the burrito was great, but the "horchata" was weird. It neither looked nor tasted like an horchata. It was more like some kind of spiced, sweet milkshake. The entire order cost me over 16 dollars -- not worth it, overall. They had the door propped open, so it was freezing inside... not sure why they would do that.

Google
Counter service in a dingy, not-quite-clean hole in the wall. Had to clean tables and chairs ourselves before sitting down. One in our party enjoyed the food, the rest was crap. Tots soaked in cheese sauce are unpleasant at best. The French toast bites resembled charcoal with a hint of cinnamon. Inedible. Service seemed disinterested - I suppose that's the result of receiving a tip BEFORE having to provide food or service.

Google
Delicious breakfast spot! Ordered the Sloppy Jose breakfast sandwich (smoked chorizo, guacamole, hash browns, fried egg, and homemade bacon onion jam), tree hugger grilled cheese (mozzarella, tomatoes, garlic basil pesto, and balsamic glaze on sourdough), and french toast bites. I would HIGHLY recommend the Sloppy Jose. I'm still dreaming of that bacon onion jam because it was absolutely delicious. Good to know: I got a small french toast bites order but it was pretty big.

Amber S.

Google
I haven't had cracked in over 10 years, it sounded good & since students are gone I thought I would give it a shot. I ordered a goy vey but unfortunately it was not edible. The salami and bacon were sooo salty & overpowering. The egg was very thin and it had black schmear on it like it was cooked on a grill that was not clean. It was a $12 sandwich that I threw away after a few bites. Really sad.

Yelp
This place has gone so downhill since its food truck days! I'm not against an expensive breakfast sandwich, but when all I taste is cheap, untoasted bread because they're skimping on the actual ingredients? Seriously, I was looking for hash browns, chorizo, onion jam or avocado - they were technically there, but so meager and tasted like they'd been sitting since the day before. And the bread was doughy and flavorless. Maybe would have been better grilled or toasted, as they used to do in the food truck? And nothing against the people working there! The guy frying my egg was fine and it's not his fault how the manager tells him to portion their sandwiches. But this is kind of ridiculous. I shouldn't still be hungry after eating a $15 sandwich.

Yelp
Got the Hungry Chief breakfast burrito and was a bit disappointed. The tortilla was good, but the filling was very dry. The hashbrowns in the burrito also gave it an almost burnt taste. I did like how quick the food came out, and all the ingredients were fresh.

Yelp
I loved Cracked when it was just a food truck. But this place is definitely under utilized during the summer months when the students are gone. They have some interesting menu options, and though the soda machine was busted this summer, the prices are pretty decent. In fact it's one of the cheaper places to buy lunch on Green Street. Definitely get the tots some time, but I've had a bunch of their sandwiches now and they are all delicious and original.

Yelp
So yummy!! Small spot on Green, ordered at the counter and the food took a minute but it was so worth it. I got an iced vanilla latte, and got the Sloppy Jose and the hungry chief. So yummy. Some spots to sit up at the counter and watch them make your food. Good college hangover breakfast spot. Lots of tables to sit at and they have hot sauce on the counter.

Yelp
Glad to have such a nice breakfast and brunch restaurant nearby. It's so near the center of campus that this location already has makes it friendly to students. It is a small and cozy restaurant, with a small menu, but up to now the foods I have tried were all good--I have tried Dr Seuss, Lil Cheesus, Plan B and Mother Clucker. Everything was delicious. I always opt out for sauce and add egg if it does not have, and stuff was nice enough to let me do that. The restaurant is also quite popular on weekends. The first time I went there on Sunday I waited in line for over half an hour! Early weekdays morning is much better. I will definitely go back to try more of their foods. Also I hope they can serve some omelette!

Matthew T.

Yelp
THE best iced latte I've had outside Melbourne, Australia. Food was great too, well worth the slightly higher price point.

Yelp
A great breakfast or brunch place to go! It's neat and clean inside, and the staffs are very friendly. I remember I ordered the Hungry Chief Burrito this morning. Maybe it was because I went there too early, like 8:25 am, and there was a small group of people ahead of me, it took around 10 minutes to finally got the Burrito. The Burrito costed approximately $10, and it was reasonable due to its size and the rich content. It didn't have a too strong flavor, which is good for me because I don't wanna drink water all the time the rest of my day hahaha! Anyway, I picked some sauce on the table to try different taste. It's right on the Green St, so I believe it would also be a simple choice for to-go breakfast on the way to the classroom.
google avatar

Trey T.

Yelp
Service is good food is average but price point is outrageous. $40 for me and two kids under 8. There is a lot of other and better options at that price point.
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
Cracked always has me coming back for more. This particular time, I got the goy vey breakfast sandwich. This thing is absolutely stuffed with meat, which I loved, but for that same reason, it was a little too salty for me, and the cream cheese did little to temper that. I was missing an element of sweetness to cut the salt. Not my favorite menu item. I've also come here for the hungry chief burrito, which is tasty, but make sure you add some sort of sauce to it because otherwise, it's quite dry. One thing I have absolutely zero complaints about is the tots. From the plain to the sloppy, you can't go wrong with an order of these -- it will tie together your whole meal. You get a lot in your order too, perfect for leftovers! Although you likely won't have any left once you start eating them. My go-to are the Parmesan truffle tots. I'd come here just for the tots! Although they pair nicely with a breakfast burrito. I'm hoping to try the sloppy Jose next.
google avatar

Annie D.

Yelp
The food was good, came out fast. Creative menu items. Was good for students on the run. The price was not feasible for college students who are on a budget. Not sure if I would go back.
google avatar

Yelp
If your looking for a delicious filling breakfast sandwich or burrito, look right here!!! I am an over the road truck driver and when I urban park, I love to explore local loved food spots. I didn't read reviews, I visited the website, checked out the menu, and everything sounded soooo good. I settled on a Sloppy Jose and a Hungry Chief. Both are stellar. This is a case of what you order isn't really going to matter because the portions are large, the food is fresh made and hot and absolutely delicious. I can't see how you could go wrong and I will definitely be back.

M A.

Yelp
Good breakfast sandwiches made from scratch and with care. Get there early before the line builds up!

Yelp
We seriously drove 1 hour to come here for breakfast. And this place did not disappoint! A little tricky finding street parking but we were able to find a meter about 3 blocks away. Ordering is simple, you just read the menu and order right at the counter. The food took a bit to come out but it's totally worth the wait. We ordered a smattering of stuff since everyone like something different. We got the Morning blender breakfast sandwich, crispy tots (Yes!), French toast bites (totally deep fried and oily), and the Dr. Seuss breakfast burrito. Totally a hearty breakfast to get the morning started!

Yelp
SO Delicious. It was very affordable and so worth the money. The food came quick, hot and cooked so well. The staff was efficient and the music was really good. Whoever was on aux at around 11:30 on Sunday April 7th was killing it! Great breakfast place, highly recommend if you like a good savory meal in the morning
google avatar

Yelp
Food is great and generous portions! Have visited this spot for couple times over the last 3 years and always friendly staff, quick ordering. Really easy to get to

Yelp
Came here as it was the only place open on green st during the week for breakfast. I was in town for work and am proud to call myself a UIUC alum as well. On this unfortunate day the heat was not working and illinois was in the middle of day two of polar vortex. I kept my coat on the entire time and the employees were miserable and made it clear they were too! I do not blame them. The food is freshly cooked to order a the time and delish! I would come back for sure. Be prepared to deal with Green st and university stupidity as there is no parking and when you find it a block or two away you pay ridiculous rates. Welcome to Illinois, the state and the university.
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
Perfect hangover food. Even if you don't have one. The place is pretty clean and the food is filling and tasty. The main attraction seems to be tater tots and made to order breakfast 'bowls' with a hash brown base, eggs, pick two veggies and a sauce. It did the trick. I do think it would be much faster to have a self serve p.o.s.
google avatar

Yelp
A breakfast sandwich is always the best way to start a weekend! I hit up Cracked and figured I'd try out one of their killer breakfast sandwiches. I got the Morning Bender which has cheddar cheese, hashbrowns, a fried egg, cream cheese, and I added bacon. I also decided to try out the Parmesan Truffle tots which sounded so yummy. I was excited to try cream cheese on a breakfast sandwich because I've never had that before, and I've seen a lot of people do that lately. It didn't add as much creaminess as I wanted, would've liked a little more cream cheese tbh. The hashbrown was a little too crispy for my liking but it didn't take away from this tasty sandwich. They give you a ton of tots which was awesome because I had leftovers and turned them into like crispy hashbrown rounds. The tots were my favorite part of this. The truffle oil worked really well and they weren't soggy, perfect crispness and super crunchy. I think overall this is a great little spot for a quick grab and go bite, I would like to go back and try more of their menu because they have a lot of different options and so many things look so good! * * * Check out my Instagram thatfoodiewithglasses

Yelp
Cracked on Green is one of my new found breakfast joys. It has a very frat boy vibe, so don't show up expecting it to be super clean or overly pretentious. Despite one of the workers sitting on the counter using his phone after preparing our food, we loved it so much we will keep coming back. They have been very nice and welcoming. Signs posted at the entrance mandate masks to be worn to enter. My fav food item is the Morning Bender!! Cream cheese makes everything better. They have great orange juice too, but the coffee isn't worth writing home about. They play pop music in the dining area that's pretty loud, but I really like how it energizes you to start your day. I understand they deliver and also have a food truck. I wish I had a franchise in my hometown!! Check them out, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I stopped in while visiting IU overnight and got great service from Daniel. Ordered the Dr. Seuss and subbed bacon onion Jane for pesto and didn't look back. Sandwiches are a bit pricey but are large and filling. I struggled to finish mine and I like big breakfasts. The nitro cold brew was so-so. Probably wouldn't go for it again, but it wasn't bad.
google avatar

Yelp
I had the Vegasm and it was pretty good. The service was lacking unfortunately so that turned me off a bit. The person taking the orders was not very pleasant in his responses. Maybe they were busy...good sandwich though.
google avatar

Yelp
Came in for a late night feast. I was really surprised that they have a place like this in CMI. This is a really cool breakfast-based place that has all of the indulgences that one could imagine. I had the morning bender. Had to be one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. Also had the French toast bites because there's nothing more that I love than being able to eat France toast lazily. I have to say I was impressed. This has to be the best food in Champaign hands down. The service was fine and every one of the employees had a smile. Thumbs up.
google avatar

Bob T.

Yelp
My son and I both loved our breakfast sandwiches. He had a salami and egg concoction and i had a burrito He is pretty picky so this is high praise. The food came up quickly despite the large number of customers lined up for their tasty grub.
google avatar

Jodi W.

Yelp
So greeted by an infectious smile. Slow due to students being gone, but if you ever have an opportunity to hit up their food truck, do it. Our breakfast burritos were amazing. Fresh ingredients. Can't wait to try the grilled cheese this summer. Clean and efficient.
google avatar

Tyler V.

Yelp
The sloppy Jose was super good. Everyone in my group enjoyed all the food. Didn't have to wait long for our order. Tables and floor chairs were pretty dirty, but if the girl behind the counter taking selfies and vaping would help the only guy actually working, the place would probably have been cleaner.
google avatar

Anthony M.

Yelp
What a great little find! If you are looking for a quick, but nice breakfast or you are just plain drunk and want some comfort food, this place is the place to be! They keep the menu to scrambles, sandwiches, and burritos, but they give tons of fresh and yummy option for ingredients. The food is a bit greasy spoon type, but sometimes that is what you want. While I wished there was a little bit more on the menu, you can't go wrong with the scramble!
google avatar

Nandana N.

Yelp
This was a food truck before it was turned into a store on Green Street. Breakfast food is the best kind of food, and they make it very well here. Prices are obviously slightly more than the food-truck, but the quality is great! I love their Parmesan truffle tots and Cajun tots. This place is great to get drunk food since it's open till 3AM. It's huge and has good seating for larger groups as well.
google avatar

Caroline S.

Yelp
Wow where do I begin... this place was amazing! As soon as we walked in we were greeted with smiles and warm welcomes. I ordered the hungry chief burrito and it was quite possibly the best breakfast burrito I've ever had. The service was fast and the food was affordable. I wish I lived here so I could get breakfast here every week. This is a must try!
google avatar

Nathan B.

Yelp
Decent lunch spot I. The area that isn't a super popular chain you'll find everywhere. The sandwich was fine for a grilled cheese, it did come quickly. Environment was alright, not great. It will work if you're looking for a quick lunch, but there are better options if you're looking to socialize over a good meal.
google avatar

Abby C.

Yelp
Very good breakfast sandwich. I tried the sloppy Jose sandwich with chorizo, and it was very flavor and good! Taste it while it is hot! The bread was also good, the meat was a little bit salty but it didn't bother me (since I love strong flavors). I wanna try all of their sandwiches if I have time!
google avatar

Sue M.

Yelp
cheap and fast food- I had the breakfast bowl with egg, hash browns, cheese, tomatoes. It was pretty bland. Cute restaurant tho! And super fantastic covid precautions! Also shown is breakfast sandwich. I would try again tho- the variety if tater tots sound good.
google avatar

Greta B.

Yelp
Excellent choice! I ordered the Dr Seuss breakfast burrito, and man was it delicious!!!! It was SUPER filling. Friendly staff too.
google avatar

Alexa S.

Yelp
Went today for brunch because I was looking for a quick on the go breakfast place on campus. As a student I appreciate to quick service and the fact that it was ready in minutes. My fried egg wasn't very yolky but that could have been because I had waited like 5-10 minutes to eat it so the yolk might have set. I felt the hashbrowns were too salty, so that threw off the taste a little. I like that they put a breakfast meal in a sandwich, cool concept. The bread was really good and soft too. Not a fan of sun dried tomatoes but it fit well with the sandwich. Very reasonable prices for students.

Jnl R.

Yelp
Came into Cracked this morning. The hungry chief was so good and filling. The blonde girl behind the counter was such a hard worker. She said her name was Simone. Management was nice and came up to us to say hi. Overall such a friendly and delicious experience. I'll be back tonight at 2 am :)
google avatar

Caleb B.

Yelp
Definitely more than just a college breakfast dive. They have a wide variety of breakfast sandwiches and bowls to choose from along with a smattering of grilled cheeses. Staff was very friendly and the food was really solid, a great place if you're craving breakfast!

Rebecca L.

Yelp
it's exactly what you expect. pretty decent place. nothing mind blowing but pretty good for a hangover
google avatar

Jason W.

Yelp
Good place to grab food after drinking all night. However, some quality control issues because sometimes the people working late at night don't give a crap so I've gotten a couple of sandwiches that were burnt to a crisp on the inside and didn't realize it until I got home. Oh well, at least I was drunk when I ate them!
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
Staff who took my order was friendly. As an Asian I often feel dismissed or discriminated just because of who I am. It will never leave me. So I'm also including AFR (Asian Friendly Rating). My AFR is 4 out 5. My burrito was 5 out of 5. Great flavor, hot inside, warm flour torilla was just right. It had that kind translucency with kinda beige color. I would eat it again. Tater Tots 5 out 5. Crispy. Small size almost looked Large size. My daughter breakfast sandwich was 4 out of 5. She just didnt like it as much, but I thought it was fine.
google avatar

Carl F.

Yelp
Stopped in here for a quick morning bite to eat. The menu is simple but the right amount of options for a morning meal. I got a breakfast sandwich and my wife got a breakfast burrito. Both came out quickly, were well made and most importantly they tased good and hot the spot. The only downside is I though $18 for two breakfast sandwiches and two drinks is a bit pricy.
google avatar

Fiz H.

Yelp
The burrito was huge (plan B) but lacking salt and seasoning. If they can scale down the size and price and up the flavors it will be perfect. The place is located in a busy foot traffic area, near the college. Was quite busy at lunch time.
google avatar

Kiwi C.

Yelp
We were disappointed by our breakfast. Both our sandwiches were on the bland side, and didn't quite match their descriptions. My husband said of the Hungry Chief that he wanted to pepper every other bite. The greasy bits were tasty but very greasy. My Sloppy Jose tasted as if it could have been excellent if better prepared with better ingredients. The "smoky chorizo" was sweet and not smoky. I ordered it because it was the sole menu item without cheese. The owners should consider adding at least one more cheese free item. The counter staff is sullen. The ladies room was untidy and had no soap.
google avatar

Tifani M.

Yelp
I started eating at Cracked when it was just a food truck by Nevada. Their hungry chief never failed to free me of hunger. Especially when I'm in a rush to get to class and didn't have time to grab a bite in my dorm. Their breakfast burrito is reasonably priced and tastes delicious. I usually ate a half for breakfast and the other for lunch. The two guys that use to operate the truck were always very friendly, and had an option for what you were craving. I am happy to see that they have a sit in restaurant now and doing good. I recommend this restaurant.

Rohan S.

Yelp
the absolute best food on green street me and my girlfriend love cracked. the workers are so nice
google avatar

Cara W.

Yelp
I give them a B+ on food, and an F for eco-friendly. I got the Hungry Chief breakfast burrito, and my boyfriend got the Dr. Seuss breakfast burrito. Both were super good. Mine was GIANT. We got the Parmesan truffle tots, which were okay. It seems like they simply use store-bought tater tots and toss them in different stuff. Not too special in my opinion. All the other menu items look pretty great! Now for my review on their eco-unfriendliness: Every drink and meal is served with single-use plastic and cardboard. All the silverware is plastic. I just don't understand why, in 2019, a restaurant would be this wasteful.
google avatar

Johnny F.

Yelp
Stopped by on a trip down here for a show and got the Morning Bender and the Cajun tots. Cajun Tots: I'd skip the cajun tots - nothing special here. It was just tots doused in seasoning and it was rather salty. Looks like the truffle tots were the way to go... haha. Morning Bender: Loved it!

Yelp
This an incredible restaurant. It maintains a sanitary level above all other local restaurants, which is extremely important to me at this point in time. The food is incredible. The service -- incredible. The staff -- incredibly friendly. And I really didn't expect this from a local chain, but the staff and GM came up to me several times to ask about the experience and I had NO PROBLEM. The staff understood the local regulations with medical masks, and wore them appropriately in every situation. Overall, I'm extremely impressed with this establishment's ability to maintain an extremely high service level while simultaneously abiding by local regulations. 10/10, service, value, and QUALITY. Will return next time I'm in Champaign, IL. Very well done. Cam K. White, long time reviewer across all 50, upper and lower. ;)

Yelp
This was my first time going to the restaurant and I the experience was terrible. I was at the register and ordered my burrito payed with cash no problem. They expressed to me that they're card reader was down. I forgot to order a coffee so I went back to the register using my card instead (big mistake). I had just been traveling and for the life of me couldn't remember the zip code to the last address I was at. So I explained to the cashier who happed to be the manager that I couldn't remember my zip code and if you could please cancel the order and help the next person, he refused to cancel the transaction as he said "he'd have to start all over" . I explained that I could pay cash but I only had a 100$ bill, but he wasn't having it. The manager began to have an attitude with me asking me how I can't remember my own zip code? And that I should know my own address. Trying to go back in forth with me in front of other customers and it was totally unnecessary. The manager gave me the coffee and said "here you got it" and just walked away and starred at me from the back of the kitchen. At this point i'm trying to login to my bank information because the manager made a scene about a small coffee and I was embarrassed. This place needs better staff over-all. The customer service is by far one of the worst I've ever experienced in my life. I would like to know who owns this place because you're employees are not customer oriented. Im new in town and now I know where to to go for breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
Great fast casual breakfast spot right on campus. Started by two U of I students so it's a nice story and authentic. I ordered the Goy Vey sandwich which comes on a roll with salami, bacon, egg, cream cheese. It was a really solid sandwich. I also got the white cheddar bacon tots which were great and came with a big portion. They were a little salty, and I would say you could split them with someone and then maybe get two flavors.
google avatar

Betty G.

Yelp
Portion sizes were huge! The Sloppy Jose was amazing, full of flavor. The Sloppy tots were just as good. However, the other order in our party, The Morning bender with bacon and white cheddar bacon tots lacked. They forgot the bacon and the cream cheese was barely there, making it quite dry. They ran out of the cheddar tots and substitute crispy tots, which were good..but tots you know? Will definitely give it another try though! PS: the bread is outstanding on its own as well!
