The Best Pizza in Chicago, From Thin Crust to Detroit Style | Condé Nast Traveler

"This corner spot is styled after a New York pizza joint, with a big emphasis on catering to neighborhood diners. New York-style thin crust is the specialty here—and the team does right by it by way of big-time flavor and thoughtfully balanced and (joyfully) foldable textures. The dough here proofs anywhere between 36 and 48 hours before it’s served—an important step that has earned the restaurant a loyal following, right along with some of their one-of-a-kind topping medleys. Take, for example, the Hipster, with fresh whole-milk mozzarella, Parmigiano Reggiano, arugula, and prosciutto, or the hotly ordered (and hot, overall) Devil in the White City, with peppers, onions, garlic, spicy capicollo, and a base of either olive oil or tomato sauce. Check out the flavors offered up by their Jones Soda machine, get a pie (or three) to go, or grab a table with some friends for a fun eve out." - Nicole Schnitzler

Google
Visited Craft Pizza for the first time recently and was really impressed. The highlight for me was the outdoor dining setup: great ambiance with a relaxed, unpretentious vibe that made for a really enjoyable evening. It’s BYOB, which is always a plus, and the prices felt pretty reasonable for the quality. Service stood out as particularly friendly. The pizza itself was excellent. I actually found myself craving it again the next morning, which says something. The whole experience reminded me a bit of casual dinners in Europe. No rush, just good food and chill atmosphere. Overall, Craft Pizza has definitely earned a spot on my short list of favorite spots in Chicago. Looking forward to going back.

Google
Super friendly staff and the pizza was DELISH. We got the Margarita and Truffle and we were so impressed! (Usually truffle pizzas are a hit or miss with it actually tasting like truffle. This one is a definite HIT!) 14” pizzas we a little over $20 depending what you got. 18” we’re about $5-7 more. Adding this to one of our favorite pizza spots in Chicago!

Google
Staff was delightful. Order was quick, music selection was great, a staff member checked on us halfway through and even offered a free slice since it was towards the end of the shift before close. Didn’t rush us at all. Sauce to cheese ratio was great. Will definitely be returning to try more from their options as we stuck to the regular basic pepperoni pie slices. Small place, but fills up quick. Bathroom was clean and surprisingly cool even tho it’s decently close to the back of the kitchen.

Google
My Fiance and I were taking engagement pics in the area and John was nice enough to let us use his space for a few great neighborhood pictures! We came back the next day for a pizza (absolutely fantastic quality/quick friendly service!) and John recognized us and chatted for a bit until more orders started rolling in. Glad to see this spot does so well and the owner seems to really care about his craft and the community. We'll definitely be back, thank you again John!

Google
Great pizza! Best my style in the city. Nice patio and byob. Really great staff. Owner is always there and very friendly. Highly recommend!!

Google
Food: I had a slice of Pepperoni Pizza. It was good. Drinks:N/A Service: The staff was nice, pleasant and welcoming. Atmosphere: It was chill. There were only a few to go orders and I was the only dine in at the time. It was a chill first time visit. I would recommend it and I would return.

Google
Craft Pizza is the best neighborhood spot. Not only is the pizza phenomenal (coming from a NY native), the staff is welcoming, kind, and everything you’d want in your go-to neighborhood joint. They make it so easy to keep coming back!

Google
Owner was so personable and welcoming, serving us himself. You can tell the passion in this slice of heaven. So far the best pizza I’ve had in Chicago, I just had a pep and a cheese slice. I’ll surely be back for the more speciality pizzas.

Yelp
Great local artisan pizza place! Get "the devil in the white city". Highly recommend going on Tuesday for the $12 pizza deals, my husband and I would BYOB a bottle of wine and sit on the patio in the summer, and normally I'm not a sit down pizza date kinda gal. Great ambiance, also family friend - Locally owned, nothing fancy. Service is always good, owner is super friendly. If you do go on Tuesday go early because they fill up fast. Much prefer their dine in over take out (I've gotten takeout a little well done in the past.)

Yelp
I recently dined at this establishment with high hopes of indulging in a delightful thin crust pizza. As a self-proclaimed thin crust enthusiast, I eagerly anticipated savoring the perfect balance of crispy texture and flavorful toppings. Unfortunately, my experience fell short of expectations. The crust lacked the magical crispness and robust flavor that I associate with great thin crust pizzas. Instead, it hovered awkwardly between chewy and soggy, leaving me yearning for that satisfying crunch that defines a memorable pizza. To add to my disappointment, the toppings were sparse. A mere scattering of lonely ingredients hardly justified the hefty price tag. If you're a die-hard thin crust fan like myself, I'd recommend exploring other pizzerias that truly deliver on the promise of a perfect thin crust.

Yelp
This is one of the best New York slices in city! They are always fast and nice at this location. Can't go wrong with any pizza and I've almost tried them all! They also sell slices during happy hour times which is nice. Great delivery also and they always get the order right! Grateful to have this great option in area!
google avatar

Yelp
We got delivery which was very fast and the pizza was hot, crispy thin crust and clever toppings , they have a choice of sauce (red/white/half half). We really enjoyed the pizza and house salad and looking forward checking it out in person!

Yelp
Great spot. Half off on Tuesdays and consistently good service! When in this part of town this is the best part of the night.
google avatar

Yelp
Really good pizza spot, perfect for a casual dinner! The pizza itself is terrific, you really can't go wrong w any of them. The place is casual, order at the counter, and you can watch them make the pizza with the open kitchen. It's also byob which is always a plus!
google avatar

Yelp
I love Craft Pizza! Best NY style pizza in the neighborhood, possibly the city. They have a great special on Tuesdays, any medium house pizza for $10 or large for $15. They do slices at select times. I've tried their white and red pizzas and they're both good! I've only done takeout but they do have seating inside and outside. Limited street parking in the area.

Yelp
I came in a little before 6:30pm on a Friday and was able to snag one of the last pepperoni slices! The staff were very friendly even though they looked quite busy. They still had a few cheese and sausage slices too, and offered to heat up the slice. A single slice came out to less than $4, and came out hot and fresh. What a great deal! The pepperonis were slightly cupped, the crust was perfectly crisp, and the cheese was stretchy. They have a ton of inside and outside seating and it's on Damen which has a quaint residential vibe. I'll have to come back for a whole pizza next time.

Yelp
Craft makes some fantastic pizza and is a community staple in the Wicker Park area. It's nothing crazy or gimmicky that makes it good - no secret or unusual toppings, no square cut, no deep dish - just the perfect amount of fresh ingredients cooked the right way with attention to detail. Crust is foldable but still has a nice crunchy snap to it. Cheese & sauce are both solid. White and red pies are both good. The Devil in the White City is great as a white pie and red I usually opt for the regular margarita with pepperoni. They have always been consistent in the fact that I've had the same pie multiple times and it's always been perfectly done. Make sure to stop in or call ahead on a Wednesday to get their special $10 for a large pie!

Yelp
Walked to get pizza with our 2 puppies (5 months old). five blocks away. We were going to eat outside. As we arrived it began to downpour. We were told dogs were not allowed inside the establishment. It would have taken ten minutes for the pizza to be done if we were to take out. There was no empathy or understanding from staff to "come in" and we could wait until rain subsides. We ended up walking home in the pouring rain. Sometimes customer service outweighs making money. Bad reviews however are priceless.

Yelp
Excellent pizza with indoor and outdoor seating . Didn't try the salad but saw a lot of people enjoying their salads. It's BYOB and they have only water and soda. Great outdoor seating. Cute how they repurposed old San Marzono tins as pizza stands. You order at the counter and they bring the pizza to you. Would eat here again if I'm in the area
google avatar

Rob R.

Yelp
Did a build your own pizza. The sausage and opions seemed skimpy, however too much pepperoni. Would probably try the Margherita next time. Crust was ok - fluffy in some spots and crispy in others.
google avatar

Paige K.

Yelp
Finally tried Craft. I live nearby, so I placed a home order and walked. Their DoorDash was turned off for some reason. They let me do half and half which was nice (but you can't mix red/white sauces). We went with Bacon Bianca and Devil in the White City. I enjoyed both. My husband wasn't a fan because the crust is super then and there's an equal layer of cheese, if not thicker, so he said it was too cheesy. The toppings weren't exactly evenly dispersed but I know they were busy. We also tried the garlic bread. It was alright. If I came back I would prob give the red pizza a try.

Yelp
I'm a native New Yorker who has been living in Chicago for the last few months. I've been on the hunt for the best NY style pizza and this is by far the best I've had. The sauce and crust are perfect!
google avatar

Yelp
It's hard to find a good New York stole slice in Chicago and now I am so happy I to have found craft pizza. Delicious fresh pizza and their pepperonis are perfection.
google avatar

Chad M.

Yelp
This is the best pizza in Chicago. New york style pies. Perfect casual neighborhood joint with both indoor and outdoor seating (seat yourself type vibe). I have been coming on almost a weekly basis for about 4 years - that tells you how I feel about it.

Foodie W.

Yelp
Still a 4*. Some minor off flavors some bites. Ordered margherita twice this week. The 18" is shrinking

Yelp
Ambience: A regular pizza parlor. No high expectations. Service: Awesome! Food: The best! We got one 14-inch with two different toppings. So yummy and fulfilling. They don't sell wines but you can buy some from the liquor store down the street. Pizza and wine are a great combo! Would I come back: Absolutely!

Yelp
Visiting from the Boston area and stopped in here while exploring the Wicker Park area. The first thing I noticed on walking in was the aroma of toasting pizza crust. My wife and I ordered a small Wicker Pork to split - a red pie with Canadian bacon, red onion, and freshly-cut pineapple - and when it came out I knew the moment I touched the crust that it was something special. Tender but with an appealing bite, flavorful but not bitter, soft but not squishy, it's one of the best I've ever had. It goes without saying that the rest of the pizza held up its end of the bargain. I had the chance to speak with one of the chefs about his passion for bread making and it absolutely comes through in the product. The location is nice, close to the Blue Line and dozens of interesting shops, not to mention clean and comfortable despite its no-frills looks. I'll absolutely go back again next time I'm in Chicago. The white pies are calling my name.
google avatar

Len L.

Yelp
I had a chance to try the pies here since the times of operations is mainly geared for dinner hours - they open at 5pm. I took a chance to look at the menu online and they are not able to pre-order online but they do accept call in orders. I ordered the "Wicker Pork" which has smoked Canadian bacon (ham) with pineapples and "Spinach" which has a slathering of spinach, tomato's and garlic. Both were purchased on Tuesday during their special's which is a few dollar's off per pie. I waited inside and I got both pies fairly fast. The both pies was tasty but the entire family agreed that the pies were overly seasoned which took away from all the fresh ingredients. Overall, the pies that I ordered was mediocre and nothing too special that warrants a return.
google avatar

Ross F.

Yelp
Great thin pizza with some fun combos on a red sauce or white base. Fun BYOB atmosphere and Johnny is known to belt out some tunes when he's feeling good... which is about every day.
google avatar

Dave R.

Yelp
4 stars why not 5? Well if I could do a half star I would. The pizza crust is awesome, the dough sweetness is great. It is the cost that brings it down. I mean it is flour, water, some yeast to make the magic happen. I know it is Chicago but pizza is like breakfast food, it is an inexpensive item that has a lot of common ingredients. I have had a few of the specials and I really like them all. Their white pizzas are really good. Their pick up times are quick. I have yet to dine there, only take out. But their beer collection appears to be large.

Yelp
Nice outside and inside seating, freshly made pizza slices, nice friendly staff, pizza was pretty good!

Yelp
Love this neighborhood pizza joint. Food is always delicious. Salads are huge for the price. Top notch pizza . There was one instance where we had a complicated pizza order that did get messed up and they immediately rushed us a new pizza. We later found out the manager didn't like how the remake turned out and we actually received a third, which passed muster. They were super polite and accommodating the whole time. My favorite pizza in Chicago. The service is some of the genuinely nicest people you could meet in the city and they always (multiple visits) make sure you have everything you need. My wife and I love sitting outside under the trees, where we are away from Damen. It's nice and peaceful. I recommend Craft to anyone who asks about pizza in Chicago. If you are ever around Wicker Park check them out.
google avatar

H S.

Yelp
Excellent thin crust pizza,I had sausage (a little spicy ) and pepperoni. The crust is thin but not dried out and the sauce is tasty.
google avatar

Victoria M.

Yelp
Pizza is a 7/10 and is really good! It's super greasy tho so bring a napkin. I LOVE the amount of cheese on the plain Jane. It's ooey goey delicious pizza. My favorite was the pizza with ham and pineapple. Just the right amount of savory with sweet. Staff was super nice!
google avatar

Ai Ci L.

Yelp
Great thin pizza. Hands down one of the best hidden gems in Wicker Park. There's many options in WP like Paulie Gee and Piece pizza that do a good thin pizza. Consider Craft one of your go-tos. Always delicious - whether you order a custom or one of the signatures - have never had leftovers. Nice crust with a soft and slight crust. Not oily. Great flavors.

Griffin L.

Yelp
Excellent NY style pizza with quality ingredients, quick pick up and/or delivery. Neighborhood gem.
google avatar

Anuj S.

Yelp
Had delivery from Craft Pizza the other day. It was pretty good overall. I think with delivery was delayed this day and I place the blame for this completely on Door Dash. They've been stinking things up of late. Regardless, the pizza was a bit colder than I'd like and that may have affected the experience. But this was the experience and my only one with Craft pizza. Still I could sense the potential and I look forward to giving Craft another shot. Maybe in-person.
google avatar

Crystal N.

Yelp
Solid place for some New York style pizza! I've been searching for somewhere with a great thin crust and I think I've found it at Craft. They sell pizza by the slice during their happy hour, which is a fantastic deal with a cheese slice for $3 and pepperoni/sausage for $3.50. We opted for the Devil in the White City and it had a nice punch of heat with the gooiest of cheese pulls. Really the only thing I have to fault is that the tip of the pizza does not hold up very well, so sometimes the toppings are sliding off as you pick up a slice from the tray. Great outdoor patio space too! Definitely will be back soon as this is the best NY pizza I've had here so far.

Kerry G.

Yelp
Great pizza & friendly staff. Too bad there's no beer! Pricey imo for but worth it every once in a blue moon
google avatar

Joelle T.

Yelp
The basil margarita pizza was delicious! Service was fast. Really love that they use fresh basil.
google avatar

Marissa P.

Yelp
Really great pizza and right around the corner! They have really kind staff and are very communicative! We wore our mask to pick up the pizza and it was ready on time. Very easy and felt safe. The margarita pizza was really good, we added pepper chinos and pepperoni. The cheese tasted so fresh and homemade!! The salad was sooo good. I ended up keeping the thing of dressing and using for my salads for the rest of the week.
google avatar

Linda M.

Yelp
I love Craft Pizza. The salads are excellent. They do a great caesar dressing. Everything is fresh. My favorite pizza is the sausage. It is mild with a little kick of heat. The sauce tastes like fresh picked tomatoes. The manager John, seems to love what he is doing. I don't notice too much turnover with the staff. That's usually a good sign that the staff is treated well and paid a fair wage.
google avatar

Annie I.

Yelp
Ordered the margarita pizza and got what appears to be a regular cheese pizza with arugula instead =\ . Drove 35 mins to try this place and waited 20 mins in the car for my pizza to be ready. The staff was friendly coming out twice to let me know the pizza was on its way however, it wasn't ready when they said it would be and they got my order wrong. To top things off, I also hate arugula. I advise everyone to double check their pizza boxes before driving off. Sadly, I did so too late.
google avatar

L L.

Yelp
Was there a change in ownership? It's been a while since I got pizza but I've gotten the house salad recently in the past couple of months. Ordered the Amore and house salad, and it feels like an entirely different pizza. Like the dough wasn't proofed enough or something. The crust and dough are flat like it's a Blaze pizza and it's thin but dense, no bubbly airy crust. Salad dressing is also thicker and more orange and doesn't taste the same.
google avatar

N S.

Yelp
Great neighborhood find. Walking w dogs and we could of eaten outside. Wonderful night finally outside weather. But like the the dummies decided to enjoy it in our garden patio. U know covid still around !!! Got the margarita ! Awesome taste wood fired crust. Not a five but definitely a 4 Starr pizza. Will need to try others and maybe the plain Jane I hear is 5 Starr's. Staff extra friendly and ready fast. So that is why I gave It a five.
google avatar

Mallory M.

Yelp
Who doesn't love a BYOB? Great low key outdoor seating. Pizza is phenomenal will definitely be back for take out or dine in again

Kate S.

Yelp
Girl when I tell u this was a literal flat bread like the thinnest crunchiest pizza ever.
google avatar

Zach K.

Yelp
We come here often. The owner and manager are so absolutely friendly. They know those who frequent often. Everything is fast and wonderful. It's our new favorite pizza joint!
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
We love the spinach pizza - it's a sauceless pie with ricotta and tomatoes and garlic and it's phenomenal! The cheese is so fresh and tasty and the crust is fantastic. The Caesar salad is also better than expected for a basic salad at a pizza joint. Someday we might switch it up as their other pizzas look great too but this spinach pie is amazing!
google avatar

AJ H.

Yelp
Good New York style pizza, but the past few times the pizza has had significantly too much flop. The way to go here is to get a classic - cheese, pepperoni, or sausage. Crisp it in the oven at home if you need to. Solid pizza overall though.
google avatar

Anna P.

Yelp
The cuteness! The cuisine! The cost! The Craft! What is not to adore about my favorite little pizza spot? While there are bigger, flashier spots in Wicker Park to try (not naming names), I would go for Craft instead. Always fresh, always friendly, always keeps the wallet happy. Plus their patio is such a refreshing spot to end the day. Do me a personal favor and go to Craft! :)
google avatar

Heyward T.

Yelp
4.5/5 for service I took out from here and was impressed with their operation, even while they were overburdened with work and balanced Covid precautions. Although there was some wait, the food was served hot and delicious. 4.5/5 for pizza I ordered the Bacon Bianca Pie, which is always delicious! There are a lot of toppings to choose from, but there aren't a lot of them. The crust is, without a doubt, the best component of the pizza. It has a good bite to it. This didn't get a perfect score was because of the additional grease on the bottom. 3.5/5 for the salad As delicious as their pizza. However, the dressing does not appeal to us, but the vegetables appear to be fresh.
google avatar

Marllon L.

Yelp
NON WEARING MASK, NON WHITE, BEWARE!!! My family walks in and ordered pizza while I sat outdoor in their outdoor dining area. My daughter tells me that they'd like to eat inside and so I obliged. I looked at the door and windows for "mask wearing policy" before walking in. Nothing is posted so I proceeded. I was stopped at the door and was told to wear a mask. Walked back to the car and grabbed my mask and proceeded to join my family inside. Half hour later, another customer walked in not wearing a mask and just went about with his business. He ordered his food and chatted with one of the staff without any issues at all. He never once was told to wear a mask or offered a mask since the pizza place has extra masks for staff and customers. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO FEEL? I CAN'T GET STUPID IN FRONT OF MY KIDS BUT I'M FUMING INSIDE. IS IT THE WHITE SOX JERSEY I'M WEARING? IS IT THE COLOR OF MY SKIN CAUSE I'M NOT WHITE? WHATEVER IT IS, I'M NOT GOING BACK TO THIS PIZZA PLACE AGAIN.
google avatar

Xaver C.

Yelp
Found this spot on yelp, n gotta say it was pretty good. The vibe is lowkey inside, ordered carry out n I liked the multipurpose pizza boxes, I imagine would be good spot for anyone who just moved into a new house and don't have their kitchen supplies ready.. Pizza was better than Roots handmade, which is down the street for comparison in my opinion
google avatar

Brian W.

Yelp
Good New York style pie. Reminds me of Brooklyn! Obviously not Brooklyn but Bucktown is close enough! My dear friend in New York actually recommended this place, she approves! So it's vetted. The cheese, sauce, sausage and the pepperoni is all great. Ordered for delivery today and my 18" pie arrived warm & super fast. Definitely hit the spot during the Bears game today, and thankfully the Bears won which is rare! Yay! I'm sure I'll hit Craft again when I'm in the Bucktown/Wicker Park neighborhood. Thanks for making a quality NY pie. We definitely need this here! Chicago people are not all about the deep dish. In fact the classic square cut thin crust is where it's at. But when you're craving that New York style, Craft will definitely hit the spot. TU!
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
This is maybe one of the only pizza places where I have ever stated that I needed to return on a regular basis, and I mean it in the most sincere way possible. The fact that it has been a long time since I have actually eaten here does not detract from the fact that this restaurant represents everything that I love about Chicago ever since my friends and I moved here. It's not particularly flashy, but the inside was comfortable, and the vibe was excellent, you can definitely come just for its relaxing vibes . Once you step inside, you'll undoubtedly appreciate the ambience. Although the Amore Pizza was great, it could not compare to my all-time favorite pizza here, the Wicker Pork Pizza, which I had ordered the day before. Nonetheless, the experience was enjoyable. To top it all off, the service was nothing short of outstanding. Without a doubt, a top-notch suggestion!
google avatar

Georgia G.

Yelp
Good NYC style pizza, and great for the price! I just wish they left their pies in a tad bit longer as the middle is always a bit soggy but you cannot beat their bread/crust it's great! Staff is always friendly and quick to help. We've dined in and ordered delivery, both good experiences.

Marta Y.

Yelp
Incredible pizza! Delicious thin crust. Loads of cheese. The whole family loved it. Service was quick and easy. We've only had take out from there so I'm not sure of the ambiance of the place.
