"There's a reason chef Tony Maws has developed a cult following at Craigie on Main. For years, the cozy restaurant has been turning out beautiful food in a space that feels like it might be your friend's dining room. Its commitment to regional, organic sourcing has been called a tad obsessive, but once you've eaten there, you'll appreciate the attention to detail. The menu is created only after the best of the day's ingredients have arrived; the wine, beer, and cocktail list also features the same local flavor. If you want the full experience, the chef's seasonal tasting menu is a must. The corned-beef hash on the brunch menu is one of the reasons the restaurant regularly ends up on "Best of Boston " lists. (House-made doughnuts in a pool of golden caramel sauce don't hurt either!)"

12 Boston-Area Restaurants for Unconventional, Messy First Dates

"Craigie on Main, a fine-dining mainstay in Cambridge, could easily fit the bill for a classic first date. But turn things from classic to a bit more adventurous by ordering the full pig’s head for two people. The hulking head is cooked slowly, served with bibb lettuce, spicy pumpkin sambal, and boudin noir-hoisin sauce. Like the famous burger, it’s been on the menu for years." - Dana Hatic

Craigie On Main - Review - Cambridge - Boston - The Infatuation

"Craigie on Main is two different experiences in one. There’s the Craigie on Main you find in the main dining room - an upscale restaurant for date nights, birthdays, or whenever you want fine dining that’s just a little more fun. And then there’s the Craigie on Main you find at 5:30pm in the bar, when crowds descend in a frantic attempt to land one of Craigie’s (not so) secret limited burgers, which, judging by the lengths people are willing to go to get them, promise never-ending happiness and/or better skin. Let other people hunt the trophy burger. You should be in the main dining room, enjoying the rare white tablecloth restaurant that’s also a lot of fun. photo credit: Craigie On Main Here’s what you need to know about the burger: they only make 18 of them a night, and they only serve them at the bar. It doesn’t matter if it’s a rainy Tuesday in November - if you want one, you’re going to have to leave work early, hope the Red Line doesn’t pull a Red Line on you, and wait outside with 30 other people before the restaurant opens at 5:30. As for how it actually tastes? It’s good. But it’s also slightly overcooked, and a little dry, and while there appears to be cheese on the patty, you can’t really taste it, which, unlike alcohol in a cocktail, isn’t usually what you’re looking for in a burger. In other words: this thing isn’t worth waiting outside in the cold for. The main dining room, on the other hand, is where you should be heading the next time you’re looking for a fancy-ish dinner that, thanks to an open kitchen and a great cocktail list, is also a genuinely great time. This is the part of Craigie where you’ll eat locally-sourced dishes like Duxbury oysters, Essex clams, and Maine lamb. Unless Dunks starts selling codfish munchkins, it’s about as New England as a restaurant can get. photo credit: Craigie On Main You can also opt into the nightly chef’s whim tasting menu. Since we screw up enough decisions in our everyday lives, we love relinquishing control to the kitchen. That said, a lot of our favorite dishes are only available either a la carte or on the prix fixe menu - including butter poached cod, duck fat brussels sprouts, and a roasted pig’s head. Whether you go with the tasting menu, the prixe fixe, or a few a la carte options, you won’t be able to decide which dish was the best. If you still feel like you have to try the burger, we’re not going to stand in your way. In the category of Boston-area bar burgers that are only available from 5:30-6:00 and can potentially get you in trouble with your boss for leaving early, it’s clearly the best. But at least try to visit Craigie at a decent hour the next time, when you can relax and explore the menu. You’ll lose the rush of chasing after a trophy burger like Indiana Jones hunting for the Ark of the Covenant, but you’ll get to have some pretty awesome fried clams instead. Food Rundown Crudo of Yellowfin Tuna Served with cucumbers, chiles, and a melon gaspacho, this crudo would be the perfect thing to eat immediately after a long run on a summer day. They probably won’t let you in the restaurant with sweat dripping off your Under Armour, though, so you’ll just have to pretend you exercised beforehand. photo credit: Craigie On Main Crispy Fried Essex Clams If you’ve ever eaten fried clams on the beach and wondered whether they’d taste as good without the warm salt air and crashing surf, wonder no more. These might be the best fried clams in the state that invented fried clams. photo credit: Craigie On Main Confit and Roasted Milk-Fed Pig’s Head Yes, it’s possible that if you look directly into the eye of the pig before eating it, you’ll be cursed by a pork ghost and forever lose the ability to taste bacon. That’s a risk you’re going to have to take. Maine Family Farms Lamb Two Ways The roasted loin pulls off the upset by besting the slow-cooked belly in this lamb two ways. photo credit: Craigie On Main Burger In the category of Boston-area bar burgers that are only available from 5:30-6:00 and can potentially get you in trouble with your boss for leaving early, it’s clearly the best. It’s not really worth the hassle if you broaden the category any further, though." - Dan Secatore

We sat "ringside" and got to see each dish for the evening carefully prepared - really neat! Everyone seemed to be all about "the burger" but don't miss out on the awesome dinner menu. Our favorite dish was the squid ink pasta - spicy, salty, and savory in all the right amounts. Also enjoyed the rice pudding dessert that ended up being an interesting take on a pavlova, and the chocolate mousse. The mousse had a potentially dangerous combo: mint and orange, but tasted awesome. Will be back.

This is an amazing French restaurant! The food is out of this World! We had the pork 3 ways and the rib was one of the best ever! The black linguine with clams were great. The beef marrow in the bone was amazing. The chocolate dessert was great! I highly recommend this restaurant. Its not cheap but well worth it!

Love this wonderful restaurant. The burger is always worth the hype. The ever-changing menu never fails to bring wonderful ingredients to the table full of flavor and beautifully presented. The Craigie Next Door patio is an awesome response to the limitations from the pandemic, and the food lives up to the restaurant’s reputation from before.

Sigh. Another day, another GREAT MEAL at COM. This place has evolved over several years into a ‘go to’ Boston institution for many (including myself) when in need of a solidly executed, consistently excellent, always creative meal that incorporates complex flavors, ingredients, and textures. The classic burger has attained cult-like status, so much so that it’s hard for locals to snag one unless they arrive early and get in line. The new burger of the month has relieved some of that stress and of the two months that I’ve had them, they’ve been excellent. Restaurant and pre fixe: are always top drawer. Bar food and cocktails: exceptional. Service: always 5/5, never stuffy or pretentious, always helpful and willing to accommodate. Don’t be afraid of the specials. Example: Recently I had a trout Kama (collar). Wow! There succulent flavor of the meat alone was beautiful. But the complexity brought by the salad and vinaigrette were something to behold. Two different crudo appetizers have been drop dead beautiful. If you can snag a seat at the ringside, do it. I once saw someone move from ringside to a table. Go figure. Tony Maws is a Boston icon, if for no other reason than being able to stay at the top of his game for so long with COM and his more casual sibling restaurant Kirkland Tap and Trotter.

Craigie on Main ranks high on many online as the go-to option for haute cuisine as well as bar food and cocktails. Despite the rave reviews, we felt there are ample other restaurants in Cambridge and Boston that do not succumb to the hype as Craigie did. Though the staff was excellent, the vibe was outstanding, and the whole team was on the same page; the food was just underwhelming. The limited option burger was not nearly as great as advertised (nor even as good as the Craigie-inspired burger restaurant in Fenway's Time Out Market), and sadly our swordfish entrée tasted solely of the overpowering salt it was seasoned with. Overall, big thumbs up on the ambiance and kind and helpful staff, but the food left much to wish for, especially considering the price point.

I would say we had a good meal, but not for what we paid for. We came here for the 5 course tasting menu, and still left kinda hungry. The pace and presentation (as well as the wine) we're great, but the food itself and the quantity was not amazing. My starter was a single cucumber sclice with roe, and then there were a few mussel dishes, followed by a squid ink pasta dish, and then finally came the single largest dish: three slices of delicious lamb! Honestly the lamb was the only memorable dish, including the dessert. The wine was another story- we each got two glasses, which were more like 1.5 glasses each time (there was a little carafe for what didn't fit into the glass). It was incredibly delicious and worth the price! In short, I had a good evening, but wouldn't come back here for a tasting dinner again.

One of my favorite places to eat in or around Boston. I have been coming here for many years with my wife, and we leave delighted each time. While Craigie has aged since the initial wave of excitement, it has aged well -- still a must-visit restaurant if you're going to be in Boston for any lengthy period of time.

Fantastic service, delicious food, and superb cocktails. We sat in the COMB area and found it to be perfect for what we wanted - low key, cozy, but with access to the full restaurant and bar menu. Not surprisingly, they were sold out of their famous Craigie burger (one day l'll hopefully try it), but we tried their weekly special burger as an appetizer (dont judge). It was fantastic! Followed that with sirloin and oxtail as one main while my wife got the sole. Both dishes were flavourful and complex. A real delight. The real star was the bone marrow side dish that was to die for. Best of all, service was top notch!
