Have been on the hunt for lots of Chinese regional specialties lately after scrolling through XHS. I've always loved the stinky snail soup noodles that come prepackaged and have tried the real thing at a few places around town (Snail Noodle King and Alley Snail Rice Noodle), but wanted to try Creating Taste's rendition.
Creating Taste focuses on regional variations of noodles from Guilin, a city in China's Guangxi province. Along with the famous Snail Noodles 螺絲粉, they also offer Marinade Dry Noodles 滷菜米粉 and the adorably named "Old Friend" Noodles or 老友粉. We had the two former options for a late lunch today, and they were both packed with flavour.
The Snail Noodles featured a robust, tart broth with a hint of spice. The usual suspects like pickled green beans, pickled bamboo shoots, fried beancurd, and peanuts were all present and the noodles were perfectly cooked with a nice slurp. We added sliced pork to round out the bowl and it was a very large portion for lunch as my husband struggled to finish. On the other hand, the Dry Noodles were slightly thicker but came with a pool of marinade at the bottom. Creating Taste claims that their braised items are made with a 50 year old recipe with over 30 ingredients for a more complex flavour, and that braising liquid serves as the sauce for this bowl. With similar toppings, the Dry Noodles also came with slices of crispy roast pork and braised beef shank. I also added a few spoons of their homemade chili oil for an extra kick. If you're not feeling soup noodles, I highly recommend this as an alternative - it's a very tasty and filling lunch at $13.99. I ended up with leftovers as we also had some dumplings from the neighbouring stall - more on that in my next review.
