Warm Up With Portland’s Best Rich, Cozy Hot Chocolates

"This small batch bean-to-bar chocolate factory unsurprisingly makes a seriously intense hot chocolate. Using a ganache that’s made in-house from Ecuadorian cacao beans, its dark hot chocolate profile will be an eye-opener for those who typically trend toward sweeter options. While there, make sure to check out the factory tour." - Rebecca Roland, Seiji Nanbu

Did the afternoon tour. Tim was awesome. He sprinkled in his brand of humor into the educational presentation and provided lots of chocolate samples kept it friendly and fast moving. Got to make my own chocolate and wrapped it to take it home. They have way too much chocolate to choose from. I spent more money on chocolate afterwards than the tour costs. Would highly recommend.

I absolutely love coming into Creo Chocolate on 23rd! The staff are incredibly helpful when I’m stuck on a gift I’m giving, by providing guidance on items that would work best. They even go above & beyond to jazz the bag up with tissue paper & a bow! You’ll find really unique flavors and something for everyone when you visit.

Service was exceptional. I'm allergic to nuts, so it was nice to see someone who was able to help more than I've gotten from other places

Their chocolate is amazing. We bought both their flavored truffles and chocolate bars. They have so many interesting flavors to choose from that if you're indecisive, you'll spend a lot of time. We got both the Vietnamese coffee and orange truffle and both were so delicious we'll have to be back for more. We saw they also have some vegan truffles and those flavors looked interesting. The chocolate bar is where you can taste the quality. We sampled a few types before buying and went with the 65% one (tasted super smooth and almost floral).

My friend and I did a make your own chocolate bar tour. It was FASCINATING. The owner (also the tour guide) is very humorous and a very sweet gentleman. This activity is good for a date, two friends, or all the chocolate lovers out there!

Super friendly! Excellent chocolate which you can sample before making up your mind.

I love going to both of their places: NW 23rd and NE Broadway. However, the one on Broadway is my favorite. Tasting chocolates and this weekend we needed advice on best chocolates to take to a whiskey tasting. They were so very helpful! Definitely need to schedule a tour.

Google
Great boutique style chocolate shop. Free samples really helped narrow down my choices. There are so many good things to choose from. Good quality chocolate, awesome staff and nice atmosphere.

Yelp

Attentive and welcome team who are ready to help you narrow or expanded your chocolate taste buds. When you are strolling down 23rd Avenue. Stop in. You won't regret your decision.

Yelp
My friend Mayra loves chocolate so coming to Portland, I knew I needed to find a place to buy her chocolate made in Oregon. Since she had brought me back Woodblock Chocolate during her last trip, I yelped nearby chocolate places and Creo Chocolates came up. Located on a busy street lined with other bustling businesses, I was excited to try Creo out. I walked in and was greeted by a young gentleman and a lady who were behind the counter. I asked where the dark chocolate was located and was directed there. I ended up buying over $60 worth of chocolate there. I bought their specialty black lava salted caramel and 100% purely dark chocolate for Mayra and then bought their specialty black spicy dark chocolate (73% premium Ecuadorian cacao) and black sesame seed brittle for me. I've only opened the black sesame seed brittle and can honestly say it exceeded my expectations. The brittle is very thin and covered with dark chocolate and a sprinkling of black and white sesame. Almost like a very thin toffee crisp. I would absolutely buy this again. I can't wait to give Mayra her chocolate since I know she'll share it (sharing is caring, after all) so I can try out the other ones. This chocolate is a bit pricey but definitely worth the quality. The shop itself is tiny and the chocolate repeats itself on different sections of the room. Although nice, the gentleman at the counter seemed like he would rather be elsewhere which actually took away from the experience. Maybe he was just having a bad day because of all the rain. If you love chocolate, I'd still recommend Creo. They have another location that also offers tasting. Next time I'll head over to the other shop and get the tour/taste of Creo!

Yelp
I brought my parents here when they were visiting as my mom loves chocolate. A cute local shop & a chocolate lovers dream. We got offered a sample as soon as we walked in. There were so many items to choose from making it hard to decide. They were nice enough to let my parents sample whatever they wanted. & yes, they did buy at least one of everything they tried. My boyfriend & I got the sesame brittle to try as it seemed like something unique. It had a nice sesame flavor, not too much to where you couldn't taste the brittle. The brittle also had that perfect crunch. The guys working there were really nice & I loved their Spongebob themed sign out front.

Yelp
I thought I knew chocolate, but now I have a lot to learn. I sampled several different pieces and each one brought a smile to my face. Each piece has a unique flavor and story. While trying the samples I was in wonderland!!! Yes, they are that good!! I was in the store on a Saturday. It was quite busy and the staff did their best to accommodate everyone. a Lot of people were just popping in trying to get a free sample. It appeared to be a fine line between taking care of customers purchasing and those that are there to get a free piece of chocolate. They did a good job! The ambiance is chilled. The sales lady that helped me was very nice and was very knowledgeable about the product. I couldn't leave without loading up for the month!!

Yelp
It was fun to visit Creo Chocolate on 23rd Ave. The store was opened on last October and you can tell because it's very clean and neat inside, with arrays of chocolates on display. The staff were very friendly and was offering customers a free truffle when I entered the store. As Yelp Elites, we got to try 3 different truffles: - Black Sea salt caramel truffle - Mushroom truffle - Spicy Passion fruit truffle I'm happy to report that all truffles were delicious as the caramel was chewy but not overly sweet, the mushroom tasted like maple syrup and the passion fruit had a little spicy kick to it. The staff briefly went over each truffle while we sampled them, which adds stories and depth to each truffles and the experience. Overall i enjoy the experience as it was a quick and easy visit with yummy treats.

Yelp
So glad there is a 23rd street location now. This shop is similar to the NE Pdx one - it's warm and inviting. I enjoyed their samples and bought their black sesame seed brittle. It's a great place to get a treat for yourself, gifts, souvenirs, and to check out new products and seasonal chocolates.

Yelp
What a welcoming greeting. And besides that the staff knows their chocolates. This is literally a treat. The moment you come in and smell the chocolate. Wow We got to taste the spicy passionfruit in white chocolate (Yumm) - the unbelievable candy mushroom in dark chocolate - and the lava black salt caramel such a delight. All three so different all three had to go home with me! They are not cheap but worth it! Thank you yelp and creo. Especially Tobias who made this experience so personal! You are a great creo ambassador!

Yelp
Super delicious, vibey chocolate store. The ambiance is amazing, with wood decor, cocoa pods as decoration, and the scent of cacao everywhere! We were greeted with a free sample chocolate with caramel and Hawaiian black salt. You can peruse the shelves and even sample any of them you'd like! The chocolate is delicious, and we particularly enjoyed the spicy passionfruit, the candycap mushroom, and the mango chili bar!

Yelp
Stopped by thanks to a Yelp event and I think this may become my go-to chocolate shop. Sure, a lot of people can make good chocolate and caramel chocolate, but what makes Creo chocolate stand out is there unique and unexpected flavors. Walking in I wouldn't have expected to leave saying that their passion fruit and mushroom chocolates would be my favorite!!! I highly recommend coming by and trying their flavors and impressing your loved ones with a unique array of chocolates. The staff member there was also so friendly and nice. They were very kind and patient with my son who wanted to try all the flavors. I also liked how open and natural this location felt.

Yelp
I ordered the Earl Gray chocolate, the passionfruit and the yuzu gimlet. The Earl gray was my favorite. Which is surprising because I don't drink this tea and it's delicious. The passionfruit is light and tangy. The yuzu is a very subtle and light taste I also got the dark chocolate covered caramelize hazelnuts for friends. They also gave us a tasting of their best seller caramel, which was absolutely delicious. I ate all three at the counter like a tasting and it was wonderful. The store smells like chocolate because they have a chocolate candle. There is a raffle that you can enter by signing up for their mailing list. I hope I win . Super nice and beautiful. I would like to do the chocolate bar making as a party someday. I forgot to take a picture of the pamphlet, but I'm sure it's under the website.

Yelp
We stopped by here with our friend for his birthday. This was like walking into fancy chocolate heaven. We were given a free sample of a delicious caramel and a couple of their bars. The coffee and cream bar was so good, I grabbed on and put it on the counter before the sample fully dissolved in my tongue! It's a nice looking boutique style shop. The staff were friendly and happy to answer any questions. It was a nice little stop on our way to do other things.

Yelp
Definitely some of the best chocolate in Portland and elsewhere! When I lived in NE, I would stop in their NE Broadway location whenever I had a craving or wanted to buy a hostess gift. So happy to discover the new location in NW 23rd. My absolute favorite is their dark chocolate orange bar. The combo of dark chocolate and orange is classic, but Creo's takes it to another level. You can smell the orange before you even take a bite, and the bar hits all the right flavor profiles without being overly sweet. It strikes the perfect balance. Also love their dark chocolate with cayenne and mango; that hot & sweet combo always works for me. In addition to a large variety of bars ($10) they have chocolate bon bons by the piece in the counter. You can select your own assortment for a gift box. The bags of brittles are also quite tasty, especially the black sesame one. Actually, everything is good!!! Creo chocolate is a family business the chocolates are made in small batches from the finest cacao from Ecuador and other high quality ingredients. It's meant to be savored. A few squares goes a long way and really satisfies.

Yelp
We attended one of Creos "make your chocolate bar" events and really enjoyed it! It was equal parts educational and tasty as we got to sample many different chocolates. They chocolates are also very good with a wide variety of flavors. I was personally happy as a dark chocolate fan as they had a lot of dark flavors. The owners were very friendly and funny. We are headed home with a ton of chocolate!!

Yelp
Creo has done a few pops up at wineries we're members of and I absolutely love their black lava salted caramels. I think some of their bars are less successful. Dark orange is very good. Purely dark is alright and nibs and sea salt is terrible. Service is odd at this particular store. It's either unfriendly or slightly snarky. It's weird as people are usually overtly friendly at chocolate shops and eager to share samples. At any rate, I'll keep coming back for those salted caramels as they're such a delicious treat.

Yelp
Amazing experience. My 15 year old daughter and her friend went on the chocolate tour. They absolutely loved it! Interesting information, delicious chocolate, entertaining hosts. I will be sending my parents for their anniversary!

Yelp
Wow!!! This was one of the best chocolate shop experiences I've ever had. We started off strong with some delicious truffles (pictured on the tray) - surprisingly enough my favorite was the spicy one on the far left which balanced well with the burst of fruity flavor. The inside was small but cozy. The workers were really sweet and let me sample as many chocolates to my hearts desire lol, which eventually led me to buying some chocolate covered cherries! I cant wait to come back!

Yelp
Wow! 10/10 recommend!! Creo's chocolate is very smooth & not overly sweet. I appreciate how they have really unique flavors that they make work very well. Very true to Portland!! Some fun flavors I tried (part of a Yelp event) were their passion fruit cayenne pepper, mushroom truffle, and the classic caramel chocolate! I enjoyed all of them even as a chocolate purist!! Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about their products; and wow there are quite a few products!

Yelp
We tried samples of spicy passion fruit, candy mushroom and black lava caramel. We loved tasting all of it. Very flavorful and any chocolate you want you can taste test. We had a fun time coming over here. The chocolate shop is a good size store. Customer service is excellent. Very attentive and accommodating to recommending chocolate choices we may enjoy. They inquire if we like dark or milk chocolate. Fruits or nuts. Then they bring out samples for us to try out. They had various types of chocolates available. Chocolate bars, sipping chocolate and lip balm. Very delicious chocolate to try out. Chocolate prices range from $10 for chocolate bars to $12 for a bag of chocolate. Definitely worth your time to stop by and explore your chocolate desires.

Yelp
A second Creo store recently opened on NW 23rd in the Alphabet District. This store has all the chocolates a chocolate lover could dream for. It screams choccccc-o-late! Stop by and give it a try. Sign up for text messages and receive 15% off on your net purchase. I love chocolate with coffee in the afternoon and love chocolate with a India Pale Ale in the evening. Yup, I need a chocolate fix throughout my day every day cuz I love ChoCCCC-O-late! What better way to get a chocolate fix with a Creo hand crafted chocolate chewy caramel. I love Creo by the truffle pieces, the chocolate bars especially spicy and the sesame crunch chocolate are chocolate crunchy delish. The parent store is on Broadway across from Toyota. There you can take a tour and see how the chocolate is made and even make you own chocolate bar. Learn the steps from growing the pods and drying cacao beans at the Ecuadorian farm through the processes of roast, crack cacao shells, grind, conche, temper, mold and package. It is not easy! But it looks fun! Cuz it's choccccc-ooo-late! Creo sources Ecuadorian cacao beans directly from farmers they trust who use sustainable and ethical practices. Creo has won many awards for their fine chocolates.

Yelp
The store smells like real chocolate, candies are beautifully arranged so the store has a nice ambiance. The chocolate is one of the best -- so smooth yet potent! Loved the mushroom truffle the most. They provide samples of most chocolates and the service from sales associate Tobias was impeccable.

Yelp
Love love this place very friendly and I've tried many kinds of chocolates such as sesame seeds but settled on milk chocolate. Bought over $100 worth!

Yelp
I was excited to potentially get some chocolate as stocking stuffers but I opted to look elsewhere when there was no acknowledgment of me in this cozy store and I was the only person inside. Cute ambiance though.

Yelp
Stopping into Creo was good for my soul (coming from a strongly sweet-toothed chocolate lover) after a tough day. The store was tidy, calm, and inviting. Each patron was welcomed as soon as they walked in and offered a sweet treat, and oh was it delicious. I sampled a salted caramel chocolate, the candy cap mushroom chocolate, and the spicy passion - each so unique and tasty! I couldn't resist buying an assortment as a gift (that I'm also hoping I'll get to help dig into!). It was a fun and informative visit. I will be back!

Yelp
Excellent variety of Real chocolate. Everything tastes wonderful or interesting. What service! Aarons the mostest!

Yelp
I did the chocolate sampling and bar making tour last year with my family and it was a lot of fun. The team here is knowledgeable and kind. I don't normally eat much chocolate, but the whisky milk chocolate bar is soooo good, Creo is now a must visit for me (to refill) every time I'm in the area. Best chocolate and highly recommend.

Yelp
Local gem! We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful family-owned and delicious chocolatier here!

Yelp
Incredibly friendly staff and great chocolate. I'm not a chocolate person and visited here with my wife on a whim, and I left with some awesome flavored bars and more appreciation for chocolate in general. A bit pricey, but I think it's definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
Chocolate is lovely. But be careful when they encourage you to order "samples", their verbiage not mine. One might assume samples are free. The ones on the tray are free but the rest are charged individually at $3.50 apiece and the employees are misleading about it, unsure if it's intentional or not but it wasn't super clear to us, especially when it was encouraged, "we have samples for days". We entered the store with the intent of buying chocolate, and did, and are excited by our purchase, but it was a bit of a put-off at checkout (fortunately we only had two samples). They also informed us their chocolate has a shelf-life of 90 days, maybe so from a healthy perspective but skeptical of any place that would advertise their truffles will taste good and not stale beyond 2 weeks.
