Best Restaurants in Haddonfield, New Jersey, a Dry Town Near Philly | Eater Philly

"For dishes that emphasize the complexity of Indian cuisine, including spicy tikka masala and succulent tandoori chicken, head to Cross Culture. Since 2005, chef Monty Kainth has been running the restaurant here and at a location in Princeton. The menu doesn’t have any duds, but the greatest hits include the curries, lamb dishes, and saffron-tinged biryani. Don’t skip the samosas and be sure to get some naan for dipping." - Kae Lani Palmisano

Google
Certainly one of the best Indian restaurants in the region. I suggest venturing beyond tikka masala and korma, even though both of those are phenomenal at Cross Culture. Pictured you will see whats listed as their “Chicken Curry” — The name might be kind of general, but the flavor they get in the sauce on that dish is serious, don’t pass it up! Also pictured you will see whats listed as the “Lamb Shank” — The menu says it is their “chef’s signature dish” and I can see why, it was awesome!!! Also we haven’t found a better mango lassi than theirs. If you know Indian food you know how hit or miss those can be. Thank you Cross Culture!

Google
Divine, perfect flavor. Menu is a little different from Indian restaurants in the state where I live now. The onion stuffed bread was awesome.

Google
I love to eat food and I love to try different things. I have been trying to find Indian cuisine in New Jersey and I guarantee this is it. Not only was it family friendly, the food came out in a timely manner, the staff was very helpful and the food was DELICIOUS in all caps 🤤🤤🤤🤤 We got the lamb Korman, the chicken tikka masala, naan bread both garlic and regular and the mango lassi. When I tell you I left satisfied and speaking about this place to everyone. I highly suggest and would continue to dine here *chef’s kiss*

Google
We were hungry when we landed in Philly Airport from Austin and for us better way to fill our stomach is by eating Indian food.... We looked for nearby restaurant and got this one open as it was already 4:00PM. Went to this place with lot of hopes, but it didn’t meet the expectations. The ambience was good and so as presentation of the dishes. But the taste is not that great. Their Biryani was neither Biryani nor a fried rice. The kebab appetizer looked very nice but it didn’t taste anything similar to Original Veg Kebab. They really need to change their recipe to taste their food to Indian food. Based on ambience, presentation and service I feel the rating is 3. They lose ratings for taste.

Google
Best Indian food in the area! Highly recommend the Lasooni Gobi and Lamb Curry. Be careful with the spice level- things can get hot quickly, so definitely bring a bottle of wine if you're eating there in person.

Google
Cross Culture delivers the Indian Food you want at a value that can't be beat. The Chicken Tikki Masala was delectable, the naan was freshly baked and the service was fantastic.

Google
Best samosa chaat I have ever had. We ate outside and all was lovely. Try the cinnamon lassi! I will be back.

Google
Cross-Cultures in Haddonfield offers a delightful fusion of flavors from various cuisines. The garlic naan, with its generous portions and perfect for spreading mango chutney, sets a promising start. The veggie app for two, featuring samosas, parokas, and papadams, impresses with its plentiful serving and delectable lightly fried goodness. The Navaratan Korma, creamy with plenty of veggies and bold spices, serves as a satisfying main dish when paired with rice and naan. Overall, the restaurant impresses with nicely packed dishes, generous portions, delicious flavors, and efficient service.

Yelp
I really like Cross Culture, but not everyone in my family likes Indian food, so we only have it occasionally. The indoor dining experience is great, with nice atmosphere and great service, but we've also had take out from here several times. The samosas are excellent (and spicy!), and the chicken biryani is quite good (my benchmark dish). We're also fans of the chicken tikka masala as well as the sampler plates and garlic naan.

Yelp
Our absolute favorite Indian restaurant. Our benchmark when eating Indian food anywhere else. Some come close, but not many can compare. We love the food and the staff. If you like Indian food, you owe it to yourself to give it a try

Yelp
Dined here recently with friends and really enjoyed our dinner! Great selection of soups, salads, apps, and entrees. I had the mulligatawny soup which was served piping hot and was so flavorful, followed by the shrimp tandoori which came with a side salad (dressed perfectly) and rice. We also ordered the garlic naan for the table. Entree and naan were delicious and service was on point, friendly, and courteous. The dining room is decorated nicely and very spacious. Can't wait to return!

Yelp
I live in town and have eaten here many times over the years and have always been satisfied. We usually do takeout. We got takeout here most recently on a Saturday night and the food was excellent as always. We got the chicken korma, chicken tikka masala, garlic naan, an appetizer sampler, and the lamb karahi. The food was ready quickly and was all perfect. In regards to spice, my girlfriend usually likes a little kick to her food and ordered hers medium, but had extreme difficulty eating her food as it was too spicy for her. The restaurant itself is a big, spacious room with great ambience. Located right in downtown Haddonfield and is BYOB; there are a few places close by to buy wine, beer or cocktails to bring to dinner with you. As others mentioned, you'll pay a bit more than your average Indian restaurant; this is typical of most places in Haddonfield, but the quality is good.

Yelp
Was walking through Haddonfield on a beautiful day and on a whim decided to stop to eat...totally unplanned but the outside tables and wonderful smells caught my attention. So happy we stopped..the butter chicken was outstanding! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Excellent!!!!! The food here is amazing. Fresh ingredients and the great mix of spices went perfect together. I had the fish curry spice level 8 and it was about the best I ever had. My wife had the chicken Marsala and she finished hers before I finished mine so I didn't even get a chance to try it. We both loved the naan as well. Service her is great we were checked in on just the right amount. Our server explained a thing or two on the menu for me. The decor here is great and overall cleanliness is A+. There is no doubt we are coming back. Sadly I forgot pics because I was enjoying my wife's company and the music they had playing.

Yelp
First time at cross culture and I was very happy with my lunch. The Vegetable Samosas were crispy and full of flavor. We shared the Chicken Tikka Masala which is my favorite dish. The sauce was amazing with tender chicken. The sauce was so good I ordered a pint to go. And the chef special Biryani was very good and on the spicy side.
google avatar

Yelp
Love the sauce and chicken is always very delicious def my go to for Indian food my favorite

Yelp
Best Indian food in America! Fabulous service and reasonable prices. A weekly visit is must.

Yelp
We are local and used to frequent this restaurant for dinner and takeout. It really has gone downhill. We ordered takeout and asked for one dish to be a spice of 3/10 and I said mild when I ordered. That dish was so spicy (And I can tolerate spice) so much so my teen couldn't eat it. I called hoping that they would replace it. They did not do so without charging for a replacement. I let them know that I'm a frequent customer and that didn't matter to them. I cannot recommend this restaurant based on their lack of consistency with the food and poor customer service.

Yelp
The Irishman from Co. Cork was craving Indian, and since he was taking daily walks from my house to Haddonfield's main fare to lunch quite a few times while he was here for three weeks, he decided we should come here for dinner, his treat. Shamefully, I had never eaten here during the four years I've lived in Haddonfield, so it was lovely to step in and realize it had an upscale ambiance. The Irishman decided to order his two favorites chicken dishes, chicken tandoori and chicken biryani. I also wanted chicken biryani. The tandoori was so succulent and juicy. Winner winner, chicken dinner. I loooooved the biryani. It was a huge serving and could have easily fed two, so I ended up with leftovers since the Irishman "et" his up. Service was excellent and if you have any questions, the staff was kind enough to explain everything in detail.

Yelp
Hands down the best Indian fusion restaurant in the local area. We go here often. It's never disappointed. Their naan is cooked to perfection in their tandoor. So fresh. All of their dishes are amazing. The only thing that's tough is finding a good parking spot. Doesn't matter it's all worth it.
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
Great place to eat! We got the chicken tikka and the palak paneer and they were both really good. Good portions and fairly priced! Everything was flavorful. I ate here twice in the same week!
google avatar

Dave H.

Yelp
Taste: good, a bit mild, but all yums; Service: oddly slow (maybe due to Black Friday); Decor: clean, comfy enough, pleasant Price for quality: ok, maybe only $2 over norm Beers: nahhh
google avatar

Kristine S.

Yelp
I got curry lamb and garlic naan that was really good I ordered it at a level 7 spicy and i wish it was spicier. I also got the shrimp tandoori i took one bite and threw out the rest. It was extremely salty. But I really enjoyed the curry and naan
google avatar

Angela H.

Yelp
Update to my previous review is very simple: Still really great local Indian, in fact, I think this my new favorite place for Indian. They have really great Naan with nuts that other rivals don't seem to have. I like the signature dishes and it was in my house in a flash through Grub Hub.
google avatar

Jenny P.

Yelp
The flavor of the food is great. The only complaint I have is with the portion size for a $20 chicken vindaloo takeout in a small soup container. I'll try the other Indian places and see if I'll return business
google avatar

Taylor K.

Yelp
Always a good experience. Very attentive and dishes are prepared as they should be. The menu is accurate and properly denotes any possible allergy issues.

Yelp
Coworker and I were looking for Indian food within a decent drive from office an hotel (en route home at end of day). Cross Culture seemed to fit the bill. Parking: we found parking on the street nearby, it's free after 6p. Haddonfield also has some parking lots if for some reason there's no street parking. Arrived after 7 there was a group there eating, but the sign said open and we were promptly seated in a circular booth. We had both done some research ahead of time off the menu online (and looked at yelp photos!) - we both wanted set meals (platter - like a thali). We also got samosas, and at the servers recommendation got samosa chaat. Samosa chaat is like... It's like if poutine compared to normal fries. Samosa chaat is probably always preferable to normal samosa unless you hate sauces. It's got white green and red sauce and chickpeas and it's really yummy. I got the non veg platter and my coworker got the veg platter. It was so much food! It has a little salad, naan, rice, various meat (veg) dishes, and dessert and raita. Neither of us finished but it was so good. Service was good, everyone was friendly!

Yelp
This is a very pretty restaurant for a date night. My husband and I went to dinner here with another couple and we enjoyed the food and ambiance. I was surprised how efficient the only waiter that was on duty was. He was a one man show. We started with shrimp over eggplant and veggie samosas, they were both were good. I hate eggplant but this was fried right . Our entrees were good and flavored just right. My husband had the sampler platter and the goat curry was in it was amazing. I thought the prices and portion size were a bit off but hey its Haddonfield. I would go back if it was for a special occasion because of the ambiance, but for a regular Indian food craving I would go to another place.

Yelp
This is a great Indian restaurant in the heart of Haddonfield NJ. The food and service were both excellent and I would definitely go back again for my Indian cravings. They can make it as spicy as you want from a scale of 1-10. Of you want it hotter please ask them for Indian hot. Everything was homemade and fresh. From the different flavors of naan bread to the mixed tandoori grill. The lamb vindloo had great spices very flavorful and the meat was very tender. Each dish is accompanied y basmati rice which is made to order. We tried the chicken tikka masala and the chicken curry. The nasal had a sweeter taste to it and the curry was more flavorful. For dessert we had gulam jamun which is a fried dough ball in sweet syrup and that came out fresh and hot. Highly recommends his Indian place and we will definitely be back again.

Yelp
I cant believe i am doing an update after 12 years. Hadnt gone here in a few years but had a great meal on new years eve. Their flavors are still very consistent and authentic. Malai kofta navaratan korma dal makhani were all scrumptious as well as the baingan bhartha. Paneer tikka masala was a bit under seasoned which worked for the kids. The nans were nice and fluffy without much oil on them. If you are unsure the thali is a good way to try a bit of everything. Service was efficient. All in all a great meal and company to usher in the new year. This place is pricey for an Indian restaurant but worth every penny for the quality of their food.

Claire V.

Yelp
Love Cross Culture! Food is always delicious but can be hot so request mild if that's an issue. We usually get take out so I can't comment on service or ambience. Some favorites are chicken tikka masala, lamb Rogan Josh, okra and grilled shrimp. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Went back again. Great spot. Would always recommend. It's never really Too busy so you don't need reservations. The service is pretty good. I want to come back a bit more Often.

Yelp
Went here for lunch with my parents on a lazy Saturday afternoon. There's plenty of seating but it's on main Street so might take a few minutes to find parking. The service was great and very accommodating. My mom is Jain (no onions, potatoes, or garlic) and they were able to make her a dish she really liked - paneer Tikka. Dad and I got the nomratma korma (spelling?) Yellow with plenty of veggies. We devoured both with the paratha and onion kulcha. I'd say the portions aren't the biggest but none of the food disappointed.
google avatar

Erika H.

Yelp
Very good Indian food at a decent price. My sister and I got 2 teas, the chiefs meat platter and an app. For $58 including tip and was full the rest of the day! The service was great and they provided outdoor seating. I will be coming back to Cross Culture!

Yelp
Only Indian place in Haddonfield for Indian food. Wife and I went once to eat here, it was a decent experience, nothing too amazing but just solid Indian food with Haddonfield dining prices.

Yelp
I love Indian Food! For my birthday my daughter found Cross Culture in Haddonfield. It is a bit of a drive but we enjoy trying new places. Located in the center of town we walked a few blocks to the restaurant. There were no customers inside so we were seated immediately. This is a BYOB establishment, be prepared. Our server told us of a place across the street to purchase wine etc., but we did not. We ordered the Spicy Eggplant and Shrimp, bread basket and the mixed appetizer to start. Everything was delicious and spiced just right. I'm in love with their somasoas! My entree: Paneer tikka masala...spice level 7. The cheese was perfect and sauce just right. Son: chicken tikka masala...he enjoyed it. Daughter: chicken curry...she loved it. We also had Basmati rice. Highly recommended. BYOB Fast, efficient service. Delicious food.

Cindi G.

Yelp
Cross Culture has some of the best Indian food in NJ! The chicken was extremely tender and very tasty! The service was excellent and we gave our regards to the chef when we left.
google avatar

Rashmi R.

Yelp
Ambience s nice simple and clean wit light music playing in the background ... the food was awesome.... it was very delicious and enjoyed every bite of it.... wonderful place to have dinner... would suggest everyone to try!!! Ps paneer tikka appetizer was so good we reordered it!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Prompt service. The food was delicious. Very reasonably priced. Not too crowded on a Thursday night. Would definitely recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in for restaurant week about a month ago and had a great dinner. Of course I ordered the bread basket and had too many naan but I enjoyed my meal thoroughly. The Malai Kofta had a little sweet and spicy flavor going for it and was delicious. Definitely would stop back down for some solid indian food.
google avatar

Nicole T.

Yelp
Never heard of this place before, probably because of the name it doesn't stick out as an Indian restaurant, but decided to take a chance since it's hard to find really good Indian spots in south Jersey and a lot of places seem to phone it in. The space has these huge comfy booths and there were only a couple other tables taken up. I think the best compliment I can give is that after our meal I kept wondering "why isn't this place more crowded??" Even the mango lassi was the best one I've ever had in my life. We tried a bunch of different grilled tandoori meats, the tikka masala, paneer and another app that I can't remember the name- all of which were excellent, but even small things like the rice, naan and side sauces were absolutely stellar. Would highly recommend and if you go don't sleep on the lassi!
google avatar

Tommy J.

Yelp
Ehh. Cross Culture used to be one of the best Indian restaurants around but they've lost their way. Service was really slow with few people in restaurant. Overall tastes were bland. Prices very high. Tandoori chicken was good. But asking for tikka sauce on the side of chicken tikka was turned down. Other Indian restaurants happily give you tikka sauce. Given there are many other Indian restaurants in the area Cross Culture no longer makes my list.
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
I live within walking distance to Ekta in Fishtown but I consistently venture across the bridge to Cross Culture instead when I want Indian food. Go with a group and get the mixed naan basket to share- so many great flavors. You can pick any spice level on any dish (1-10) and I love that feature. I picked 9 last time and thought they went a little easy on me, but I have a high spice tolerance. My two favorites are chicken vindaloo (red wine vinegar, cashmere red chillies) and karahi (ginger, garlic, tomatoes and onions). Apparently there's a lunch buffet too... looking forward to trying that sometime in the future.

Priya K.

Yelp
Stopped by this place late and they had my to go order ready quick, even though the place was really busy! The menu had lots of options but I had the chicken tikka masala spice level 6, chicken biryani, garlic naan, and kulfi! The naan was super fresh and the portions were really big, The leftovers tasted even better the next day so I will definitely will visit again when I am in town!
google avatar

Rachael A.

Yelp
What can I say other than this place is amazing! Everything we ordered was made with love and very nice. Even the naan was lovely. Obviously, a ton of vegetarian options and many vegan options. I will be coming back!
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
Enjoyed my fist dinning experience. Started with bread platter , which consisted of different types of hot nan bread. ( the garlic was my favorite). I was really looking forward to having goat but was told they had none that day :(. Instead, I had lamb, which was very good. Prices were reasonable , however I though the portion size was a bit small I plan to go back and hopefully try their goat and their lunch buffet

Mike B.

Yelp
We ate here twice while we were in town. Had the chicken vindaloo, chicken tikka masala, palak paneer, and some samosas. Great flavors, perfect spice levels, and fair prices. I'd encourage anyone to check it out.
google avatar

Bhavika P.

Yelp
Nice authentic indian food. They have buffets for $11 on weekdays and $13 for weekend. Considering only vegetarian options it had 2 apps, 2 veggies, rice, dal, salad and dessert. Although we went with Ala-carte. Ordered 2 veggies and a basket of naan ($43 without gratuity). ~$15 per entree comes with the side of rice, $10 roti basket, $3 pickle. Entree portion is enough for 1 person but not for 2. Malai kofta was really good and has 3 koftas in it. Navratna korma - Good mix of veggies including carrots, beans, broccoli, baby corn, etc. in creamy sauce. I went with 7 spicy and it was just perfect. Basket of naan included - garlic naan, onion kulcha and plain naan. Onion kulcha was too good. The best I have ever had. Overall the food was awesome - very flavorful and fresh!
google avatar

Varun V.

Yelp
Solid food. Have tried the tandoori chicken, tandoori shrimp, paneer tikka masala and naan. I will definitely come here again.

Steve K.

Yelp
This is the best Indian food in South Jersey hands down. Always fresh and always amazing. The staff is always pleasant and the atmosphere is lively and casual.

Yelp
I hate to leave a bad review, but in this case I feel it necessary. I've almost never had Indian food I didn't like, but the dishes in this order ranged from mediocre to truly awful, to actually missing from the order. And I'd meant to try this place for a long time. How disappointing. I ordered delivery on Father's Day, after seeing it was being offered at no extra charge. The food arrived warm and on time. I had originally had the Papadam in my online cart. Then I saw they were included in the vegetarian mixed appetizer, so I added that and deleted the separate order of Papadam. The food arrived, I opened the bag. No Papadam. That was a bad start. Oh, well, at least I have Samosas. Those lacked seasoning, were heavily breaded, and extremely greasy. Truly just short of being inedible. The main dishes were just so so. No real heat to the Chicken Vindaloo. The fish curry was not at all as described on the menu, in a thin sauce and tasting a tiny bit fishy. The best I can say is that the rice was fine and plentiful. The mint and tamarind chutneys that came with the appetizer were good.

Melanie S.

Yelp
to all the foodies out there THIS PLACE WAS AMAZING. GREAT POSH LOCATION. incredible SERVICE GREAT AMBIANCE. ME & my love came here for a Friday date night & we're blown away. I got the lamb shank & i almost chewed the bone like a dog it was so good. my gf got the fish kaarala & i had to stop her from licking the plate lol. I really recommend it I will definitely be back ASAP.

Yelp
Very good food. Ordered chicken tikka masala and the rice wasn't just boiled, it was cooked in the pot and had a nice slight crispness to it. The sauce had a good flavor but wasn't too heavy, tasted a bit more of nutmeg (maybe cinnamon) than I'm used to, but very good. There was an OK amount of chicken but I wasn't blown away by the portion size. The garlic naan was good: fresh and tasty. The onion kulcha (naan stuffed with onion) was delicious. If I didn't order this, I wouldn't have had much of the tikka masala left over. And that's why I can't give this place more than 3 stars: the prices! They are WAY too high. I guess they get away with it because of being in Haddonfield. Most indian places I've been to all over the country range from $10-14 for an entree. $18 for an average size of chicken tikka masala is simply too high. I doubt I will go back again unless there's another grub hub coupon to mitigate this. If the prices were at least average, Cross Culture would easily earn another star. I suspect that isn't going to happen given their location, so it's unfortunately time to look elsewhere. I'm new here, any suggestions?

Ardent R.

Yelp
When we walked in, the aroma isn't great. That's the reason I give one star less. Everything else is really nice. The curved, round table booths are superb for giving the privacy. Felt strange when the waiter just walks in free hand and takes your order. We ordered, - Malai Kofta, spice level 2, - Panner Tikka, spice level, 4 - Bhendi Masala, spice level 7 Butter Naans and Garlic Naans. I was so sure he is going to mess up, but all came exactly as we ordered. Food was super delicious. Waiters were courteous and polite. Masked up. But gave a feeling that we are talking to robots. Human touch was missing. Sure they don't ruin the evening but didn't help either. They were sticking to their routine and doing a perfect job. I shouldn't complain. But it would be "really" nice if they can give a smile and ask "How are you" rather than politely asking "Are your ready with the order sir" as the first sentence/conversation. Ambience is good. Food is great. Service is good. Don't miss. I will sure go again.

Yelp
Based on the reviews, we were really excited. Little did we know, we'd end up across the street eating chicken fingers instead. We had a 7 pm reservation. Upon arrival, several other reservations were waiting to be seated before us. The dining room was by no means packed, but they seemed to be understaffed when it came to bussing and waiting tables. The wait wasn't too long, though. We sat at a table with the bottle of wine we bought. We asked for tap water. There were no glasses on our table. 10 mins later, we were asked again if we wanted water. 22 minutes into sitting at our table with our still unopened bottle of wine, we finally got water. 10 minutes after that, our bottle of wine was opened. We ordered Naan, Tandoori Chicken, and Lamb Vindaloo. 45 minutes into our visit, we received our Naan. 20 minutes after that, we finally received our entrees. One cut into my Tandoori Chicken, and I saw that it was completely undercooked. So, we basically waited an hour and half to just eat bread. They did comp our meal, but insisted they fix their mistake. I honestly didn't feel safe eating in a restaurant that served undercooked poultry, so we bowed out and headed across the street for some quick food. We could have forgiven the terrible service if the food was as good as everyone said it was, but we just didn't have that experience. I don't think we'll be returning.

Yelp
Amazing food and excellent service. Hands down my new favorite for Indian food. Will order from them on a very regular basis going forward.

Yelp
Amazing food and a great place to dine in with beautiful interior. Ordered chicken malai kabab it is tender and delicious, for the main course ordered lamb Ragan gosh with tandoori roti. Lamb is the best of all I had and bread is baked to the right time. Over all a great place to taste amazing Indian food.
