Earlier this week, a crowd at the office was waiting at the elevator to go down to lunch.
"There's this new pizza place..."
"I do NOT like pizza...it's too carby."
Everyone *GASPS* and looks at said person.
"Not even thin crust?"
"No!"
What's that saying?
Pizza is like sex, when it's good, it's really good and when it's bad, it's still pretty bad?
*Shrugs*
I guess you can fake both 'gasms.
I was headed to get sushi when I stumbled upon the soft opening of Crossroads Pizza at the former Pastry Cupboard space. It's a family-owned pizza cafe serving thin crust pizzas, salads, and coffee.
The pizzaiolo is an Arizmendi Bakery and The Cheeseboard Pizza (Berkeley) alum which is promising because Arizmendi has fantastic pizzas.
Soft opening hours are until 3 pm this week and 9 am - 5 pm next week.
For now, only whole pizza and coffee are available. Salads and pizza by the slice to come really soon.
A sample of all the pizzas (except the breakfast pizzas) are displayed in front to help make your decision a little easier.
I ordered the Market Street Pizza ($14) w/ creamy roasted garlic sauce, mozzarella, goat cheese, mushrooms and truffle oil.
Within seven minutes, a freshly baked pizza was delivered to me.
The crust was thin with a deliciously buttery and slightly flaky crust. The bottom crust is very thin (thinner than Arizmendi) so it's perfect for carbophobes watching their carbs. Good ratio of melty cheeses and mushrooms with a drizzle of truffle oil for an extra layer of earthiness.
It's counter service but the staff are customer-oriented, warm, and very friendly. They're very receptive to feedback which is always appreciated. I forgot to tell them but I hope they consider adding soups to their menu (it's that season!).
Seating is limited with 3 two-tops and about 8 window counter seats.
Overall, solid thin crust pizzas (4 stars) with great service. Crossroads Pizza is a welcome addition to Hayes Valley/Mid-Market area!
