"Crystal Jade, owned by the private equity arm of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, closed on June 30; representatives from the company indicate a change in course for its restaurant holdings, shifting from an ornate and ridiculously expensive model — Crystal Jade’s Embarcadero restaurant cost $14 million to build — to a smaller-format, casual format. On the food side, however, there is plenty of potential for improvement — Crystal Jade was widely panned by critics for its average food and extremeley high prices, including now-retired SF Chronicle critic Michael’ Bauer’s comparison of his dinner to a proctology exam." - Ellen Fort

"The splashy, $14 million Cantonese restaurant that opened four years ago, with a 200-seat dining room, bar and lounge, 4,000-square-foot terrace, multiple private dining rooms, and luxurious interior design from Ken Fulk. The menu included extravagant options like whole roasted pig, live lobster and crabs, whole peking ducks, and more." - Ellen Fort

My parents and I went to this restaurant for my birthday, looking for a unique experience and high-class Chinese food. What happened was certainly unique. The location itself is quite beautiful and the decor is attractive. Mood lighting set it up to be a great place for a special occasion. We were surprised by how loud it was; not because of particularly noisy patrons but due to the acoustics of the location. The first thing I noticed upon being seated was that they presumed you wanted to eat with chopsticks. This pleased me. The second thing I noticed was that the chopsticks were cheap, black plastic. This did not please me. Our first course, a lobster wonton 'soup' was more of a 'lobster wontons in broth': hardly any liquid at all was in the flat plate-like bowl. It was unfortunately warm, not hot, as if it had cooled off on its way from the kitchen. The subsequent dishes came to the table far too quickly, as if the waitstaff were attempting to run us off. The rice was al dente, which is bizarre for Chinese style rice, and was somewhat dry. The eggplant was somewhat undercooked but the meal's saving grace was an absolutely fantastic fried beef dish which was magically cooked medium-rare and tasted phenomenal. The frustration and curiosity continued as dishes from our very first course stayed on the table until our last bite, being completely ignored by the busboy and waitress. Once, the busboy came by to take a dish... and was going to leave without taking the original soup bowl from three courses ago until we called him on it. Water was not refilled until the end of the meal when, presumably, the busboy told the waitress that we were noticing the lack of service. My glass was completely empty for around 10 minutes. All in all, Crystal Jade Jiang Nan was a strange experience. Even though the reservation was marked as a birthday, we never received so much as a Happy Birthday greeting upon entry or exit. Perhaps it was an off day for the staff. I certainly hope so.

Fantastic Chinese cuisine with wonderful restaurant atomosphere. The best Peking duck and other dishes I have tried so far. Very traditional style and very delicious.

We tried Crystal Jade because it was conveniently located near where we live. When we looked it up on Yelp, it didn't have amazing reviews so we hesitated a bit but when we actually tried the restaurant, it was as great as it could get: the great view from the patio, friendly staff and very delicious food! Only thing is the food portion was a bit smaller than I hoped for.

Very decent dim sum food. There are some dishes that taste different from the regular dim sum places and were particularly good - the sesame balls, radish cake, and the sweet soy flower desert. We also ordered the Peiking duck - the duck was good but the wrapping pancakes were starchy and fell apart easily. I probably will not order that again. Our waiter was busy and disappeared a lot - our tea pot was empty and required refill >30% of the time.

Crystal Jade was a pleasurable eating experience. Not a typical place I would eat at though. The prices are really high. Having said that, the decor is really nice, the service was excellent, and some of the dishes we had were just incredible. The "duck tacos" were a special treat. They brought out the whole duck and carved it table side. Maybe try coming for lunch instead of dinner to cut down on the price some.
