Where To Eat In Andersonville - Chicago - The Infatuation

"If Cuckoo’s cute yellow interior and goofy plush chickens on every table don’t cheer you up after a sh*tty day, their Korean-fried wings and bubble tea will. Their wings are light and crispy, and come in five varieties: soy garlic (our favorite), sweet and spicy, honey mustard, curry, and snow onion (a peppery yogurt sauce). And if you can’t decide, just get their "T9 Combo" sampler platter. For $30, you get two wings per sauce, plus fries, takoyaki, and a pork bun. The space isn’t too big, but there’s usually an open table, making it easy to drop by for a chill catch-up with a friend or a quick solo bite." - sam faye, adrian kane, john ringor

Cuckoo Review - Andersonville - Chicago - The Infatuation

"If Cuckoo’s bright yellow interior and silly plush chickens on every table don’t cheer you up after a sh*tty day, their Korean-fried wings and bubble tea will. We stopped by Cuckoo for a casual lunch and had a mixed—though overall pleasant—experience. The garlic soy chicken sandwich was definitely the star of the meal: crispy, flavorful, and super satisfying. The presentation was adorable, with the fries served in a cute little basket that added a nice touch. The rice bowl, on the other hand, was just okay—it lacked the flavor punch we got from the sandwich. The place itself is very small and cozy, which gives it a relaxed vibe, but there was only one person working the counter and kitchen, so service was slow. That said, they were kind and doing their best. My husband and I enjoyed our time there. While it wasn’t mind-blowing, we’d consider coming back—especially for that garlic soy sandwich!

Google
Definitely visiting again! It was so good. We got fried chicken tenders and fries, the spicy kind and it did not disappoint! AND THEY GAVE GLOVES! So elite we loved it!!!

Google
Some of the best fried chicken sandwiches in the city. Their bibimbap is solid and their katsudon is very good. Everything is made fresh and it reflects in the taste. I ate there and my secret spicy chicken sandwich was perfectly crispy and juicy. Truly a hidden gem in Andersonville.

Google
Spent ~$30 for two people. Chicken sandwich does live up to the hype. Very good service. Would come back.

Google
I found the sweet and spicy chicken sandwich substantial, balanced, and flavorful. The chicken was coated with a thick and very crispy breading layer and was noticeably tender through the entire sandwich. The breading and lettuce provided a great contrast of fresh and savory crunchiness against the soft and sweet bread, and the sauces, while piquant, never overwhelmed the other flavors of the sandwich. The chicken sandwich was a very happy experience. I also had the pork buns, which I found blatantly mediocre. The buns were very dry at some points and almost wet at others, as though parts of the buns were steamed selectively. The pork belly inside tasted plain bad, and was tougher than any other braised pork belly I've had from an Asian restaurant. I'd stick to the sandwich.

Google
GREAT extremely crispy chicken sandwich. Loved my milk tea too - got the ancient brown sugar. Not a fan of the slams and beeps continuously coming from the kitchen.

Google
Great fried chicken sandwich! Definitely one of the best I've ever had. Super crispy, juicy, and the optional sauces are all good as well! Plus, I appreciate the generally calm atmosphere and super nice service every time I step inside!

Google
This is my quiet place when I need some serenity from work. Happy music is playing, and the entire place is bright yellow with plushie chickens on the tables in yellow buckets. In the employees' downtime, I see them washing the space down and cleaning up. Hand sanitizer is on each table for before or after your meal if you make a mess of yourself. Guilty! I always come for the Korean fried chicken and was just tickled the first time I came in and they served the wings with a pair of gloves to keep your hands clean. At first I thought it was silly and I wasn't going to use them, but then I was like f that! I walked out of that place as clean as a whistle after guzzling down my fried chicken and pickled radish. The Snow onion flavor has a lightweight batter with a peppery sauce. I've never had a cheese cloud before and was obviously intrigued like any American citizen would be. I quickly learned that a cheese cloud is made of cream cheese, whipping cream, milk, and sugar. So duh, who wouldn't like it? There was plenty of crystal boba to get you through the entire drink. The cheese foam is like a special treat at the end, almost like your dessert at the end of a meal.

Yelp
Sadly this was a really disappointing meal. The spicy chicken sandwich wasn't spicy at all. It barely had any flavor except for the mayo and crisp lettuce. It was also a little strange to have a whole breaded chicken thigh, which made for some stringy bites. The beef bibimbap was worse. Hate to be so harsh, but the only description we could come up with was boiled beef pellets. The whole bowl smelled of "meat". (If you've ever cooked beef before you'll know what I mean.) The rice didn't seem fresh and overall there was a lack of flavor. Sadly even the matcha boba was lacking flavor. With only a couple of sad melted ice cubes, it was watery and not very cold.

Yelp
Ambiance - minimalistic, pastel/yellow decorated interior, offers a couple tables inside, cute stuffed animal on all the tables Service - wings/tenders are made to order so expect about a 10-15 min wait, 1 person working up front (takes orders, makes drinks, serves food) Food - although wings were super crispy, the plain was missing some flavor; spicy pork bibimbap (egg was overcooked, toppings on top were lacking some salt/flavor) Must get - coconut curry wings!
google avatar

Yelp
This is such a cute and quaint place! The spicy pork bibimpbap was tasty and not super spicy. It was a bit fatty but not overly. It's a perfect place to come grab lunch if u want some peace and quiet! Definitely order ahead, it saves time.
google avatar

Wendy H.

Yelp
I really didn't like the bibimbap. The beef reminds me of dog kibble and it's very tough. I don't know why they cut it like that? The pickled vegetables need more pickling and the egg was almost all the way cooked. The ratio wasn't the best either. There's a ton of rice and it wasn't warm enough. The chicken here is fine but the special spicy sauce wasn't that special. The bun they use on the chicken sandwich is good though.

Yelp
Came back here recently again with my partner and although the girl who rang us up was nice, the food we ordered was pretty flavorless and dry. We both opted for the "spicy" chicken sandwich however it has no sauce just as an FYI. It's just the seasoning in the chicken that is supposed to make it spicy, but I didn't find it spicy at all. I hadn't had a meal this bad in so long. It also sucks because we asked if they had any spicy sauce and they said no, but that we could purchase a "sweet & spicy" sauce that goes on that specific sandwich for $2 a container. Honestly, I was pretty saddened considering the very first time I came here two years ago, I actually had a decent meal. I think next time I'll just stick to their wings and call it a day.
google avatar

Kylie K.

Yelp
Boba tea was good, fried chicken-the breading was just perfect. Not too thin, not too thick, just airy enough with the pleasant crunch. Definitely i would recommend here

Yelp
This place is awesome! The yellow and pink paint are sooo joyful. Very cute store and the food smelled wonderful. The service was quick and the staff was kind. The boba was yummy, and their chicken was crispy and well seasoned. Overall a good place if you are looking for Korean chicken!
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered beef, chicken, and spicy pork bibimbap through UberEats. I mean it's definitely healthy... but super bland for all three meats. There was no sauce on the side and no option to order any sauce on the side. All the veggies tasted boiled with no flavor whatsoever and the meats were lacking salt.
google avatar

Colette V.

Yelp
Employees are very sweet and friendly. I've ordered from here a few times. I love their chicken so much and really appreciate they include gloves. Their sauces are delicious and I love all the flavors. I usually come in to get the tenders which are pretty affordable as well. I just wish the add on sauces weren't so pricy. I like to get the sweet and spicy with honey mustard. The inside is also pretty cute I like that it's themed :)
google avatar

Yelp
Perfect place for your Korean chicken fix! The store is decorated with chicken dolls, and they keep you company while you eat. These are available for purchase or trade in with your punch card. I had been here before and forgotten that the chicken pieces are very large and meaty. Each piece is around two chicken nuggets length wise. The 5 piece should be enough for one person. The sweet and spicy sauce lived up to its name. So good! The side of fries came out in a cute shopping cart. Oyakodon hit the spot. The dish comes with seasoned chicken, onions, and fried eggs. I was looking for a hearty, filling meal, and it checked all the boxes. I'll be trying the other Japanese ricebowls when I come back!

Yelp
This is a very nice casual Korean option in the neighborhood; the interior is basic but cute. Similarly, I've only ever seen one cashier/server in the dining area though food seems to come out in a reasonable amount of time and piping hot! Chicken wings and tenders are crispy and juicy, Korean and Japanese rice bowls are yummy, and the fruit and milk teas are great.
google avatar

Yelp
Quirky and great! The stuffed animals on the tables are a bit weird, and clutter-averse me is not a super fan of those, but it fits the quirky-cute vibe. I had the beef bib bim bap bowl, and it was delicious. Savory and a lot of food! Price was a liiiiiittle high at $14, but I did get two meals out of it, so I'm calling that "not bad". My BF had the chicken sandwich, and he devoured that bad boy - with the provided plastic gloves to keep hands clean - which I thought was a nice touch. All in all, would be back - and the location across from Hopleaf practically guarantees that - clean, bright, fun, good food - yay!

Troy C.

Yelp
Seems pretty average to me. The chicken is more of a crispy batter than normal chicken frying. Good but not great. Sauces were ok. The dumplings and steamed buns were nothing to celebrate. The service was not what I would call friendly. It was just clear and direct. The seating area was clean and basic. It's a Korean chicken place. I didn't expect much so am content with what I got

Yelp
I've passed by Cuckoo countless times and the bright awning always piqued my curiosity. I decided I was in the mood for a saucy chicken sandwich one day and was so excited to try this place. I ordered my food for pick-up and it was ready within 15 minutes, super speedy! We walked in and were greeted by a friendly employee behind the counter. I asked for ketchup and she already had it in the bag. It was a slow lunch shift, the inside was small and cute, very yellow. My friend and I sipped our mango smoothies on the way back to work and it was hard not to chug it all down because it was so refreshing. It was my first time having Crystal boba too and I found it much more enjoyable to chew than traditional boba. My only grievance with the smoothie was the cheese foam was hard to enjoy until the very end, since there wasn't much and it was at the top of a very long cup. When I sat down to eat my food, I was slightly disappointed with the chicken... I was under the impression the chicken would be tossed in the sweet and spicy sauce but it kind of just looked drizzled on top. On top of that, the sauce was definitely lacking flavor. It wasn't really spicy at all and I wasn't expecting that from a Korean chicken spot! If the sauce has "spicy" in the name, it's a let down when there is no spice. The fries were perfectly salty, delicious and came in a hefty portion! Will likely come back to try the wings (with a different sauce) and some more of their yummy drinks!

Vivica L.

Yelp
I ordered delivery through Uber Eats, and it was pretty solid. My favorite was the snow onion chicken tenders, they had great flavor. The sauce was a bit much, so I'd probs do on the side next time. The soy garlic tenders were tasty, but I think they needed more sauce and salt. The pork buns were my least favorite, it was just fatty pork belly with no sauce, so it was a bit too dry. Def better than other Korean chicken chains, I'd go again!
google avatar

McKenzie F.

Yelp
This place is such a wonderful gem in the neighborhood. There's no other food like it nearby and it's always fresh and delicious.

Cindy S.

Yelp
First time here. Tried their tofu bimbimbap and Boba tea Delicious and great service ! Will definitely come back
google avatar

Beth K.

Yelp
So delicious and healthy; well, not if u order the great fried chicken. Huge portions of perfectly prepared meats and vegetables; always enough for two full lunches
google avatar

Paula B.

Yelp
Ordered a bunch of food for delivery and we were very pleased! The soy garlic tenders were the ultimate favorite that we'll be coming back for. Soy Garlic Tenders: amazing flavor! Light and crisp, 5 tenders are enough if you're mildly hungry. Since they're delicious I would order more next time. Snow Onion Sandwich: spectacularly tasty sandwich. Split it with my husband. Could do with less Mayo next time but still impressed. Smoothies with cheese cloud: wonderful!! Dumplings: Good no issues. Pork Buns: While not bad I generally wasn't impressed. Wish there was a sauce on it.
google avatar

Jasmine M.

Yelp
The flavors of the chicken are so yummy! The sauces are simple but complex in flavor. The variety box I got was worth the price. The server/waitress was sooooooo freaking sweet and attentive. It's cute quiet spot for some great food.
google avatar

Sara Annela T.

Yelp
Chick-fil-who? Cuckoo! Ok, Chick-fil-a sauce is still crack to me but that's it. I mean wow, what a spectacular chicken sandwich from Cuckoo. So simple but how can it be THAT good? I'm glad you asked. The BUNNS. YUMMY! That fresh doughy, chewy kind that melts into the thick, juicy, crispy fried chicken cooked to perfection. Pair it with the classic lettuce and tomato, voila. What a find and another place I stumbled into! MUST. MUST. MUST go. Mic drop, I'm out. Except sorry for the terrible photo of it. I barely remembered to take a snap before I chowed down on it. That's a good sign!

Yelp
Korean fried chicken is my favorite type of fried chicken, so I'm happy that they opened this place up in Andersonville last year! It's my second time visiting and of course the food was just as good as I remembered. The first time we ordered chicken sandwiches, I remember mine being quite massive (my chicken was even bigger than my boyfriend's, hah!)! I really liked the breading as I've noticed it being somewhat different than other Korean chicken places like KCOOP and CM chicken. Nonetheless I love all three. Tonight we got the snow onion wings and bibimbap. The wings were fire! Light, crispy, not greasy. Really tasty. The bibimbap had beef cubes which I actually really liked since I think I usually get a thin cut beef at other places. The bibimbap didn't have too much flavor going on which some people might not prefer, but I didn't mind. I'm glad it wasn't salty! The decor inside is so fun and vibrant. It's a small place but not usually many people inside whenever I go. I notice as I dine in that a lot of people do pick up orders. Overall I'm grateful we got a new delicious spot in the neighborhood!!
google avatar

B K.

Yelp
oOf. WAY too much breading. sauces were barely on wings, fries cold and burnt.... maybe my expectations were too high.. 2 stars for a restaurant offering a little bit of everything for customers to try tastings of menu. non tapas restaurants should really follow suit w cuckoo on this one. had this order delivered. maybe it's a place you need to dine in..?
google avatar

Precious B.

Yelp
This place is super cute and really clean inside! I ordered the beef bibim bowl and two drinks. I'm a fan of self ordering kiosks and this place has one.

Amanda C.

Yelp
Cuckoo is a cute Korean cafe and lunch spot. The food was fine, but a tad bland. My bibimbap could've used a bit of soy sauce and the chicken in it really wasn't seasoned. The rest of the food my friends had was great and the bubble tea is wonderful! Food portions are also big, so I'd highly recommend sharing a bowl if you're not intending to take home leftovers. Service was S L O W. There was a bit of a late lunch rush when my friends and I came in, so our food took about 15-20 minutes to come out. They also forgot my kimchi, but the cashier was kind enough to give me a refund. TL;DR this is probably not the place to come to with a large group, but it's a great for a slow relaxed lunch and/or bubble tea.
google avatar

Connie K.

Yelp
I placed on an online order ~30-40 minutes ahead of time and it was ready by the time hubby arrived on a Saturday afternoon. I unpacked all of our food immediately after it was home in attempt to prevent it from getting cold/soggy. We both had the chicken sandwich and shared some yogurt onion wings. Since we both opted for the regular chicken sandwich it seemed kind of plain so I added some Chick-fil-a sauce that I had laying around. Hubby did the same and added some other sauce on top of his sandwich. The chicken itself was fine but there was a lot of mayo (I ended up wiping most of it off with a paper towel). I was excited for the wings but was disappointed that they were really bready and were peppery in flavor.
google avatar

Joseph M.

Yelp
I came here with my girlfriend at the time because this place looked pretty inviting. We really liked the overall decor and ambiance and were intrigued by the menu. We ordered the 30 dollar T9 fried chicken combo. It took awhile for our food to come out, but figured it would be hot and fresh. Which it was. But I thought the chicken was just OK and my girlfriend (who lived in South Korea for a while) was not impressed whatsoever. I thought the sides were alright. But not worth 30 bucks.

Collin F.

Yelp
Delicious chicken. The pieces they use for the sandwiches are so thick and juicy and for only $10!
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
The staff is super nice and the food is really tasty. Seating is limited. Definitely recommend. Note that the bubble tea and fruit tea drinks are less sweet than typical, so you may want to take that into account when ordering sweetness level.
google avatar

Mayo M.

Yelp
Loved Cuckoo! Delicious sweet and spicy chicken sandwich... perfectly cooked, moist, fresh tasty bread... shoestring fries were great... hot and crispy served in the cutest little shopping cart. Milk tea was also great - we ordered 50% sugar and wished we'd maybe not done that though. So many other dishes we can't wait to try here.. such a cute place... look forward to our return!
google avatar

Katherine K.

Yelp
I swear this is witchcraft. I have never had better chicken tenders in my life. I got the honey butter tenders and squid rings. When I walked outside and got a whiff of the magic inside, I literally said out loud "holy sh!t...". I will also be a frequent flyer for their smoothies. Cute and very clean inside. I really hope this place thrives or else I'm just going to be a vegetarian because no chicken will be able to compare and that's not a life I want to live.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Cool spot in Andersonville. Grabbed a smoothie Ana tea both were good. Quick self checkout in a clean friendly environment. Parking is in short supply.
google avatar

Adam R.

Yelp
Food and service was great. Ambiance is a non factor, this is a place to order take out or go pick food up. The scallion pancake was delish.

Alan L.

Yelp
Inexpensive, fast, and clean. I will be back. The bi bim bop was the best dish we ordered.
google avatar

Eric O.

Yelp
I was in the area and I heard good things about this restaurant, so me and my wife wanted to test it out. I got a Thai tea with tapioca boba. The drink was good but the boba was really hard and smaller than what I've had at other places. I'll try it again at a later point.
google avatar

Carrie H.

Yelp
The boba here Is excellent and the food here has no business being as good as it is. I'm talking restaurant quality, knock your socks off food. The hubby said it was the best fried chicken sandwich he had ever had. I'm picky as heck and I can always find something delicious to munch on, whether it's the bibimpap or katsu bowl. We go once a week now. And the lady working there is a saint. And to that one reviewer who knocked a star off because she didn't like the stuffed animals: Um, who hurt you?! The cute stuffed chickens are adorable and we love it!

Jedsen W.

Yelp
Great food, great service, and fun atmosphere. It's one of those places you can really taste the love. The pork in the pork buns could be a little leaner in my opinion. This is the only critique I can think to make regarding their food. I've tried about everything on the menu, and the chicken tenders and sandwiches and my two personal favorites. And the bubble tea being a standout.
google avatar

Cody W.

Yelp
I had the honey mustard chicken sandwich and it was so good! Plus they gave us plastic gloves to eat with so our hands stayed clean.
google avatar

karin p.

Yelp
So good! me and my daughter needed somewhere to eat that was quick and kid friendly. We ended up here and had a blast! I definitely recommend the pineapple smoothie with boba and cheese cloud. Other good dishes include the side of dumplings and the bi bim bop. The chicken looked amazing - which we'll order next time.
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
This place had some crispy chicken, and the only thing that would make this place perfect is if they embraced the sauce. In my experience, Korean fried chicken is always so delicious because of the sauce, and there's usually a kick with the spice (if you want it of course). At cuckoo they have a good vehicle where the wings are sizable and the skin is crisp, but overall sauce flavors were pretty muted. Wish the soy garlic had a more prominent flavors, that the coconut curry had more curry flavor and that the sweet and spicy was spicier. However, the dipping sauce (mustard and...?) for the squid rings were fire. On top of that it seems like they try to incorporate new flavors every now and then (coconut curry and onion yogurt was featured). I was not dressed for the occasion but interior is super cute for photos, bright yellow and pink aesthetic. Would def come back here especially if I'm out having drinks in Andersonville.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Chicken was very tasty & the brown sugar tea w/ tapioca hit the spot. Will try them for carry out next time.

Kristen L.

Yelp
I work in the area and I am always looking for good food to eat on my lunch break and recommend. Cuckoo just opened up and I was excited to try their Korean Fried Chicken Burgers. I got the Honey Mustard Chicken burger and a side of Fried Buns. The chicken sandwich was huge but very delicious and the chicken was cooked to perfection. Many chicken sandwiches are too dry for me but this put so many others in the dust. The fried buns were an excellent sweet taste and perfect texture, I'll probably dream of them in my sleep later. They have so much more on their menu and I can't wait to return to try more.
google avatar

Jane P.

Yelp
10 OUT OF 10 STARS. So much flavor. Can not say enough good things. Bought so much, then regretted, then immediately did not regret because every single thing was so good. We got: dumplings, edamame, takoyaki, pork buns, honey mustard chicken sandwich, earl gray bubble tea, and banana smoothie. Even the cup for the bubble tea was superiorly designed. How does this place not have a million five star reviews? Don't sleep on it.
google avatar

Bryan K.

Yelp
Got the sweet and spicy chicken. Good crunch, good flavor, decent bun, ok toppings. Takoyaki was quite good, same for the sweet potato fries. Price is a tad steep, but worth it if you're craving Korean.
google avatar

RJ S.

Yelp
So happy to have Korean fried chicken in the neighborhood! Their boneless wings are juicy, tender, and with a perfect fried batter that coats your sauce of choice so well - we went with their sweet and spicy, and a curry. We also had the scallion pancake that was perfectly fried, not too oily, and went so well with our chicken. And don't forget a side of kimchi to help balance everything out! Milk tea was pretty good too, would love to know if they are BYOB because everything we ate would have been great with a bottle of soju and some beer. Staff was friendly and attentive!

Casey B.

Yelp
It was so cute inside! It said they were having their soft opening. Japanese/Korean foods and bubble tea and specialty drinks. I got a combo fruit tea which tasted great and it was a good size. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying some of the food. They have a very convenient kiosk for ordering. Cafe style with some basic seating inside. Looks great glad to have them nearby

Yelp
just had an AMAZING shrimp teriyaki japanese don bowl at Cuckoo today. Was amazing and my dad loved his meal so much too. VERY tasty! 12/10

Soso S.

Yelp
The food/drink is good. The cups for the boba teas are so aesthetically pleasing and convenient. The staff is always nice. The drinks just look so pretty and the little stuffed animal ducks they have are sooo funny and cute. If you want the best boba in Andersonville this is the place.
