"To many gastronomes, the subtle flavors and spicing of Khmer cuisine makes it one of Southeast Asia’s great food secrets. That’s certainly the view of French chef Joannes Riviera, who has taken inspiration from Cambodia’s unsung culinary traditions to create one of the region’s biggest restaurant success stories. Cuisine Wat Damnak has received numerous accolades since opening for business in 2011. Using only the freshest local produce (think juicy tropical fruit, bamboo shoots, and fish from nearby Tonle Sap), Riviera devises regularly changing tasting menus that burst with creativity. Recent hits include a fish sour soup with green banana and rice paddy herb, and a duck confit curry with fresh rice noodles. Dinner is a steal at just $27 for five courses or $31 for six."

5 Questions with Joannès Rivière on New Cambodian Cuisine

"Helmed by Rivière and his wife, Carole Salmon, Cuisine Wat Damnak was born, showcasing innovative menus inspired by the food traditions of Cambodia’s golden age, when each day’s fare was made up of herbs and vegetables from the family garden, and fish and game from the surrounding fields. Cuisine Wat Damnak’s ingredients are almost entirely sourced from nearby farms and foraged from around Siem Reap Province." - Rachel Tan

Had a great experience here — the service was excellent, drinks were well-crafted, and the tasting menu was definitely interesting. I enjoyed some dishes more than others, but really appreciated the creativity and the nod to Khmer heritage. Definitely worth recommending.

A TRULY MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE! We initially made a reservation mistake by booking the day after we actually intended to visit. The front desk made us aware of this and noted they could still accommodate us. The property is beautiful with ample indoor and outdoor seating. The cocktails were delicious and the meal was something we will remember for years to come (we selected both the meat-based and vegetarian-based menu selections). This experience truly elevated our trip in Cambodia and made for a very special evening. Thank you to the entire front- and back-of-house staff!!!

A must-visit in Siem Reap! The food was outstanding—beautifully presented and full of flavor. They offer both plant-based and meat set menus, and everything we tried was excellent. Great atmosphere and attentive service. Highly recommend!

The experience we needed! The food was delicious, I had the vegetarian menu and I should say, chefs in Europe have to learn from this… not the usual vegetarian ingredients, but delicious surprising flavors! I really enjoyed it! The service was very good and the place is not that expensive if you consider the level of the service and food. Highly recommended!

During our visit to Siem Reap, my husband and I dined at Cuisine Wat Damnak, renowned as Cambodia’s first restaurant to feature in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. Despite a branch in Phnom Penh, we chose the Siem Reap location for its distinguished recognition. Reservation: We booked several days in advance through the restaurant’s website, accessible via their Google Maps listing. Upon arrival, the restaurant was fully booked, highlighting the importance of early reservations. Dining Experience: We selected the 8-course tasting menu at $45 per person; a vegetarian option was available at $38. Beverages were charged separately. The dinner lasted about two hours. While not every dish suited our tastes, we appreciated the innovative flavor combinations and the use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Service: The service was impeccable, with staff demonstrating extensive knowledge of each dish and ensuring a seamless dining experience. Final Thoughts: As enthusiasts of fine dining, we prioritize visiting top-rated restaurants in every city we explore. Our visit to Cuisine Wat Damnak in Siem Reap was a highlight of our trip. We highly recommend it to those seeking a unique culinary experience in Cambodia. Special thanks to ChatGPT for the recommendation; it truly enhanced our journey.

An elegant and well-curated restaurant offering a refined dining experience inspired by Cambodian cuisine. The menu is a voyage into flavors, featuring two tasting options: one vegetarian and one that includes meat and fish, both consisting of carefully crafted small dishes. The flavors are well-balanced, with a skillful use of spices that enhance each dish without overpowering the ingredients. The price is on the higher side, in line with a gourmet restaurant, but justified by the quality of the experience. Recommended for those looking for sophisticated cuisine with a creative touch.

The meal was fabulous and if it wasn't for the Pomelo & Ginger Martini cocktail I'd ordered (& couldn't drink) that tasted like straight up vodka without any other flavour, I would have rated it 5*. The service was impeccable and we had heard the set menu meal could take a long time so we got there when they opened at 6pm and we were finished by 8pm in time to catch an hour by the river and visit the markets.

Absolutely phenomenal meal. This is one of the best tasting menus I’ve done, at a bargain of a price compared to similar ones. Unlike other places, the vegetarian option isn’t just a watered down version of the meat option here. It totally holds its own. Would highly recommend getting both and splitting if you have a party of 2 or more. Portions were reasonable. We left comfortably full but not stuffed. And the service was impeccable. A must try for anyone visiting Siem Reap.
