The Best Restaurants in New Cross | Where to Eat in SE14 - Eater London

"While the jerk meats aren’t necessarily New Cross Road’s most celebrated, the menu at Cummin’ Up offers plenty of variety. With other branches in Lewisham and Brighton, Cummin’ Up has been serving Caribbean staples for 30 years, and service is particularly quick. Standouts include curry goat enriched by bone marrow that seeps into the glossy sauce during its slow cook; oxtail with creamy butterbeans which add to the dish in both taste and texture; or viscid stewed cow foot. Best washed down with one of the fridge’s many Caribbean soft drinks, from peanut punch to soursop juice." - Jonathan Hatchman

Absolutely Disgusting Hygiene Standards – Avoid at All Costs! I cannot stress enough how appalling the hygiene standards are at Cummin up in New cross. I walked in expecting a decent meal , but what I witnessed was beyond unacceptable. This is a complete and utter failure of hygiene and food safety standards, and frankly, it’s shocking that this place is even allowed to operate. Food businesses in the UK are legally required to follow strict hygiene protocols, and this establishment clearly couldn’t care less. Where is the management? Where is the food safety enforcement? I will be reporting this place to the relevant authorities because it is absolutely disgusting that people are being served food in such unsanitary conditions. If you care about your health, do NOT eat here. This is a breeding ground for foodborne illness, and it’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously sick. Sort your standards out, Cummin up this is beyond unacceptable.

Look, I’m not Jamaican so I can’t say I’m the authority on Jerk Chicken but I’ve eaten my fair share and the food here is honestly sublime! The chicken was moist and delectable, honestly the best I’ve had in my life. Don’t listen to the haters, this place absolutely slaps ! Also the lovely Jamaican lady serving me was a gem!

I didn't have any of the main foods but only a lamb patty which I can say was quite nice however, this branch does not have good customer service. I sat down to go eat my patty after I purchased it because I didnt want eat and walk with the food and the woman who was at the till proceeded to tell me that other people need to come in here and sit down and eat, insinuating that I should leave keeping in mind I was just going to eat my patty and leave, I was even thinking of buying a cake as well but changed my mind after that interaction. Especially since that was rude and not needed at all. I also was not happy with the service as she was talking with her friend the whole time when I first entered the store and only acknowleged me after they finished their conversation. Such a shame because I haven't seen that many Caribbean shops near that area but I'd rather find another one than go back into that shop.

Absolutely disgraceful- they charge you an arm and leg for a small portion food and the food was disgusting avoid at all costs honestly! Ordered oxtail rice and pice they gave 4 pieces of oxtail 2 were just bones - the guy is very blunt and rude so makes you not want to complain. Very sad

If I could give it a 0, I would. I ordered via Uber Eats and the food arrived late. The first delivery driver cancelled as the restaurant took too long. When the food was delivered, the cheese in the bun and cheese that I ordered was stale and gone off. It stunk so bad. I called the restaurant to let them know and their solution was to order more food and they would deduct the money I had spent on the bun and cheese. The rest of the food was very average and not as hot as it could have been. Overall, very disappointed and will never be ordering from this restaurant again!

Ordered on Deliveroo and received a visibly old and soggy saltfish fritter , it’s such a shame that I did not look at the reviews first , very disappointed it’s unsafe to serve old food

Jesus Christ, how good was that rice (I had the jerk chicken fried rice). Auntie was super nice and helpful , recommending a gravy to go with it (I'm still learning about the cuisine) but God it was so good . Thank you so much ! Hope to see you soon!

Very disappointed there was plastic In my food when I told the lady at the counter she didn’t even apologise. The food was actually very nice but the staff need to work hard on their customer service you’re meant to cater to the people that pay to eat in your restaurant so have manners. Ur lucky I didn’t kick up a fuss kmt.

Yelp
The jerk chicken always bloody sells out by about 5 o'clock. This place has expanded this year, going from a little take away where you literally ordered food from the lady in the box, to actually having a seating area now! Wow. I think this is because they jerk chicken is amazing. As well as this, the patties are AMAZING go for the spicy lamb one and your mouth will be on fire (in a good way). One thing. The curried goat. It is so hot and spicy that it is overkill. And because they cook it with bones for flavour it seriously could be dangerous for your teeth when you bite down hard on one. ouchy.

Yelp
So i was a bit let down by Cummin Up. I was expecting a lot from previous reviews, granted I'm a veggy and didn't try the jerk chicken which most people rave about, but still. The veggy curry with rice is a bit overpriced for what you get. It's filling and hot but there isn't a lot of flavour, its largely potoes, cabbage and onions, which isn't so interesting. £4.5 when chicken with rice is cheaper made me feel a little cheated. Pair this with abrupt service and I feel like I'd rather go somewhere else. It might be a different deal for meat eaters, but if your aren't going to put the effort into the veggy options then why bother having them at all?

Yelp
Really lovely chicken soup, and a 'yummy' piece of carrot cake, according to my little sweetie. However a male owner/worker kept aggressively staring at me (it's a black on black thing, I guess...but not really something I appreciate). Hence two stars.

Yelp
Cummin Up serves some of the best food you'll eat in New Cross. I highly recommend their jerk chicken fried rice, it's only a couple of pounds and is the perfect snack for the walk home from the station. The food at Cummin Up is very very good and there's a fair selection of options, as well as a fridge of drinks, all at ridiculously cheap prices. Not to be missed.

Yelp
I've eaten Caribbean food from takeaways all over London and most do a reasonable job of representing our cultural cuisine but this restaurant without a doubt has the best curried chicken I've ever tasted it's been a very long time since I had the urge to suck on a bone for that last bit of flavour but rest assured every bone was sucked clean I highly recommend this eatery

Yelp
First of all, it has an excellent name. Secondly I love West Indian food and this place has huge servings that are friendly on your pocket. Smack bang by New Cross Gate station I used to love going there as a student and the yummy smell it gives off makes a welcome change from the usual stench of bum and pollution New Cross tends to have. The staff are absolute mentals and have a habit of sometimes shouting incoherently and changing your order. Very friendly mind! Stuffing your face with jerk chicken, curried goat, rice and peas etc. etc. always make a nice change from other generic takeaways. So next time you're debating a Chinese or a pizza this could make a welcome change.

Yelp
I absolutely love anything West Indian, as my favourite place in the world is Jamaica. I have been their twice therefore know what the food is like. This takeaway restaurent is delicious, and highly recommended to anyone who loves their curryed chicken, rice and peas, creamy coldslaw and all the other amazing choices there are such as curry goat, ackea and saltfish and so on. The helpings are big, its cheap, and a brilliant, satifying, rather healthy meal to start, or finish the day with. Its on the new cross road and hard to miss!

Yelp
I like Jerk Chicken there, it's very cheap and delicious. I have never tried Jamaican food before and because of their Jerk chicken now I am a fan. You can buy normal size jerk chicken meal at 3 Pounds during happy hour (from 12 pm to 1 pm). The normal jerk chicken meal is 3.80 and if you have big appetit you can order large meal too. You should definately tried the food there. Local people love it!

Yelp
Sooooo disappointed with this order. After being regular customers they completely let us down. My food did not come with the rest of the order and then it took a further hour to get my meal. I called them to ask where it was and the woman on the phone simply shouted at me frantically with no empathy that at 10pm after all my friends had eaten I still didn't have my food. The delivery woman then went to shrug at me and say 'speak to my boss, I'm going home now!'. I am disgusted with their behaviour and it really ruined my evening. Wish I could give 0 stars to them, the food was not worth the wait or the stress they caused. They didn't even attempt to make amends for this mishap, truly unprofessional.
